It was our first night in Windermere, a Saturday and we needed to go somewhere for dinner last minute. We managed to book a table at Burn How, we were welcomed immediately and invited to the lounge area to have a relaxing drink while our table is ready and we ordered our food. The menu was vast and all looked delicious. I opted for two vegeterian dishes the soup of the day which was apple and parsnip and parmegiana which was served differently from the way we are used to. My husband opted for the crayfish and the fillet which were also mouthwatering. Everything was perfect from the service to the restaurant ambience and the prices were reasonable aswell. We are glad to have came across this place.

The location is perhaps a little challenging, so passing trade is limited. That said, for anyone with a knowledge of Bowness, The Burn How is a must visit restaurant. Stopped late in Windermere, on way to Aberdeen. Looked on TA and found this cracking hotel Restaurant. Firstly, the welcome from the very friendly staff was wonderful and we felt at ease straight away. The starters, smoked salmon and prawns with mango were great. Sea Bass and Hake was equally tasteful. More impressively the owner of 40+ years came over during courses to welcome us. Very charming and made us feel special. Nice find thanks to recommendations on Trip Advisor.

Me and my partner visited here for a treat. The service was attentive, old style traditional and warming. I loved the fact you were seated in the lounge with a drink to browse at the menu. The starters were cooked beautifully, and the wine and service was excellent. I had lamb for my main, and asked for it rare though it was overcooked for my liking. The dishes were beautifully presented and portion sizes were perfect. You were fed, not fattened. Will return, and you should visit.

We have eaten in a few places in Bowness and mostly they have been fine. We were looking for somewhere on a Saturday night and I noticed the reviews of the Burn How were particularly good. I obtained a reservation for a party of four and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is part of an hotel and is in a conservatory, overlooking delightful gardens. One could see bats flying around the trees at dusk. It is very pleasant and relaxing. The menu has plenty of choice. I had the duck starter which was very good, followed by the rack of lamb. Again that was splendid. My wife had prawns followed by a baked cod. She said the cod dish was one of the best meals she had eaten for a long time. We enjoyed a nice bottle of Malbec with the meal. The sweets were delicious also. We had a lovely table, the service was super and the whole evening was very enjoyable. We would eat there again.

We chose to book here for dinner on a Saturday evening as a result of the previous reviews that described it as out of the way with such a high standard of food.We were not disappointed. The service was excellent attentive and friendly. The restaurant itself looks typical of a traditional hotel restaurant aimed at the older clientele but it had a lovely atmosphere. My only criticism of the food is that the choice for vegetarians is a little lacking and unimaginative however my partners food was of a high standard and served beautifully he had prawns followed by venison. I had mushrooms and cheese on toast and then a stuffed roasted pepper which was a little undercooked. The location is beautiful and quiet compared to the intrusive mixed quality restaurants in Bowness and it is only a minutes walk from the centre.

We have been to Bowness a few times and came across this restaurant by chance having booked a 2 night stay at the hotel - absolutely fantastic. The setting is beautiful. It is situated near The Belsfield Hotel, tucked away in picturesque scenery of wildlife in a conservatory - so you are overlooking all of the above in a lovely garden (you can go for a stroll afterwards around the garden if you wish). In the restaurant there is classical music playing softly in the background with light wildlife effects too - so relaxing! Very quiet - an excellent getaway from the hustle and bustle of the main town centre. With the setting done, onto the food. Absolutely fantastic. The A La Carte menu has everything you could want from seafood, chicken, Steak, Venison - an excellent selection. We had the garlic prawns to start with me and my partner and they were divine. Plenty of flavour, without being too much. Sometimes we find restaurants just load prawns with far too much garlic, but this was done to perfection. For our mains I had the racks of lamb. So tender - beautiful done. The presentation was excellent. The food portions are just right. Generous enough so you are satisfied, but not over the top so you are bloated! My girlfriend had the seafood; a fillet of cod with spaghetti with garlic prawns and a dil mash - she loved it!There was a vast choice on the wine list too. The service was excellent too. Attentive without being in the slightest bit over bearing. Just what you want from a restaurant!Afterwards you can sit out in the conservatory and have a few drinks or finish off your bottle of wine as we did and enjoy the views. We met a couple who had been coming to the hotel/restaurant for 28 years and it was there 40th wedding anniversary - says it all. They said it themselves they are never disappointed. As a side note, we had breakfast here too and it was just as divine. Anyone looking for a gem in Bowness - visit here! I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

Peaceful setting with plenty of room. Menu had a good varied choice of starters and main courses. Starter of Burn How fish cakes excellent and the lemon pickle was delicious. The other starter of confit duck leg with Serrano ham wasn't exactly as per the menu, when it arrived it turned out to be slices of duck breast served with slice of ordinary british ham. Not quite what was expected. Main courses of Cod and the other of Chicken Breast to be fair were great. Desserts were varied, the chocolate pot with raspberry sorbet was very good quality but the sticky toffee pudding a little disappointing. The staff were very friendly and helpful although it took quite a while to get our bill and then to pay it. However, we had a relaxing evening after a long day of travel.

We booked a meal at this restaurant for new years eve. It was a 6 course fine dining menu which didn't disappoint. When we arrived we were met with a really charming elderly gentlemen at the reception who without hestitation took our coats showed us where to go and made us feel immediately at home. ( i.e. there was no checking that we had booked or who we were.). The serving staff were delightful, helpful and looked as though they were really enjoying what they were doing despite having to work on new years eve. The table and the restaurant was decorated in the traditional Christmas attire but there were some little extras like surprise boxes with balloons, poppers and whistles in for midnight. We were treated halfway through the meal by some lovely bona fida bell ringers that got the diners all singing and clapping. The portion sizes were rather on the small side and courses served a little too quickly between each course but as there were 6 courses the meal portions in the end were just about right as by the time we got to our desert we were nicely full. The elderly gentlemen who might have been the owner, came round several times during the evening for general chit chat and to make sure we had everything we needed which was a really nice touchThe fabulous night was completed by an impromptu dance routine from two of the waitresses which was funny, lightheated and brilliant. All in all a really pleasant experience and fun way to enjoy the new year. In a lovely setting, charming, genuine staff, lovely cooked and presented food. The evening just sailed by.I presume the extra effort was because of the occasion but I do get the feeling that the warmth and attention to detail shown is the norm there and I know other reviews have highlighted the lovely food.It was worth every penny that we spent and we certainly wouldn't hesitate in going there again

We booked here for dinner on New Year's day. The person who took the call was extremely welcoming and friendly in her manner. There was a set menu that did look more expensive than some of the other restaurants in Bowness but we were staying around the corner on a rainy, windy night and so the location was perfect. The reviews of the food that we had read suggested that it was really good, local fare. There was a bit of a mix up with our order but this was acknowledged immediately and several suggestions were made towards resolution. This was all done in an extremely pleasant way and the situation was resolved very quickly. The venison en croute and the lemon sole were delicious. The dessert was lovely and the wine list had something for each person in our party to enjoy with the food. The dining room was cosy with festive decorations. The food was really very good but the service was outstanding. We visited Burn Howe for our wedding anniversay dinner because of the good reviews on Trip Advisor. However, we were a bit disappointed. The restaurant is in a three star hotel, and although the proprietors have obviously tried to smarten up an older building, we thought they still had some way to go.The restaurant seems to appeal to an older age group - well at least there were lots of grey-haired folk there when we visited. Perhaps the food appeals to this age group, but we found it to be distinctly average, and even by London standards rather pricey for what it was.Other reviewers point out that this is a haven of quiet in an otherwise busy (sometimes rowdy) town, and this is true.

Just had a scrumptious dinner at the lovely Burn How Restaurant. Would never have tried it if not for the recommendations of others on this site. Goat cheese tart, yummy mushroom risotto and sticky toffee cake that I am still thinking about. If you want to get away from the maddening crowd and have a lovely evening, try the Burn How.

Easy to walk to if you know where it is..our guest house recommended it. There is no big sign on the street advertising it as open to the public, but that was nice as we observed some other eateries in town with many rowdy and boozy occupants The menu and wine list was extensive and the room was delightful with views of the garden. Come a bit early and enjoy a pre dinner drink sitting in old fashioned arm chairs while gazing over the garden. The staff were delightful and very helpful and friendly. The young Polish waitress was a sweetie. We highly recommend this restaurant. Try the Chilean dessert wine..to die for.

Good menu. Well cooked and served. Only complaint...could have had a more comprehensive cheese board. Breakfasts incredibly good.

I have known the restaurant under the same management for probably thirty years, and have yet to be disappointed. Good atmosphere, comfortable dining room with space, pleasant service. The food is original, well prepared and presented. I recently returned after probably 5 years away... just as good. Always a pleasure going back!

A beautiful dining room overlooking hotel gardens. The restuarant offers an excellent menu which changes daily using locally sourced produce. Food presentation was fabulous and the service was outstanding.Daily specials, childrens menu's and a fine selection of wines are available.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
