This is my go to Restaurant in the Dales , the restaurant is decorated lovely , the ambiance is superb . We took out two dogs in the bar and they were made a fuss of by the waiting staff , We had the lunch menu , I had the Ox Cheek and it was the best meal of the holiday . What a little gem, set on the green in Reeth village is this fab hotel and restaurant, we only had dinner here as we’re staying nearby, actually dangerously close 😈 The staff were great and we had a good giggle with them during our visit the food was fantastic we couldn’t fault a thing also they have a good wine and drinks menu. The lounge area, restaurant and outside area were stylish and clean with lovely view across Reeth and the hills beyond, perfect.

Absolutely delicious! The food was fine dining, without a doubt. We were looked after by Julie, who served us our drinks in the guest lounge, by a roaring fire. We had the brocoli veloute, whipped blue cheese (the stunner), and smoked duck salads (starters). The beetroot risotto, the beef and the sea bream (mains) all exceptional in both taste and presentation. So thank you for a lovely evening 😊.

Ate here for lunch and had light bites, hallomi, prawns, potatoes bravos all so tasty so decided to eat here one evening. Took our dog and was booked into the bar area where it is dog friendly. Had the lamb and steak dishes followed by cheesecake and chocolate moose. All the food was superb, you have an excellent chef. The young staff that looked after us were lovely and very friendly. Food was fab, highly recommended.

Given the prices I found this restaurant rather uneven in terms of the quality of the food. The duck starter was enjoyable and the venison first rate, however the cheese was cold and uninspiring given the high quality of local cheeses available (it was supposed to be local cheese but included some rather tasteless Gouda). Wine was available by the glass ( but no halves) and the Shiraz tasted as if the bottle had been open for a while - it was quite unpleasant. All the port and sweet wines seemed to have vanished and couldn't be located. The service was friendly and good, but overall the quality of the food and wine was uneven.

Enjoyed a really lovely evening meal here with friends at the weekend. The welcome was warm and we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in the cosy lounge. Every course was expertly cooked and equally delicious. My duck breast starter was probably the best duck I’ve ever had and every morsel of my guinea fowl main was perfect. The chocolate orange torte with blood orange sorbet for my dessert was an indulgent delight. Other highlights from our parties meals included the rump of lamb (perfectly cooked I’m advised) a monkfish main and a fantastically sticky treacle tart with creme anglaise. We did encounter quite a long wait for our starters and between courses but this was acknowledged by the friendly lady who was serving on who provided us with drinks on the house and extra sides (unprompted as we hadn’t complained) which we thought was really kind and a nice touch! Despite the long wait I’m still giving a five star review as the food was so good. I’m so pleased we such a lovely restaurant on our doorstep - we’ll definitely be back.

Had dinner here with two girlfriends. First the good bits. Location and building itself lovely. So was the food, albeit on the expensive side. Very well presented, quality excellent. What spoiled it was the behaviour of the staff. Now I don’t object to being addressed as ‘guys’ or ‘you guys’ , but really every time the waitress spoke to us? I don’t object to gentle chat with the customers, but throughout the meal, 20 mins or more at a time, at foghorn volume was just too much. We heard all about the difficulties with the horse, the childcare issues, the long hours and so on and so on - couldn’t help doing so as conversation between us was impossible. Made worse by the fact that the elderly couple beneficiaries of the attention were a little deaf, so the carcophony was even greater. Needless to say will not be returning.

It has taken me 9 months to write this review because what should have been a night to remember turned out to be the opposite! From the start we were seated in the restaurant close to a couple just drinking wine, no social distancing. We all ordered steak for our mains and they were all inedible. They cannot have been cooked by a chef. We complained to the young lady in charge and after a long wait we were told we could have a free dessert! The chef (if there was one) didn’t have the decency to come and speak to us. The staff were so young and inexperienced one of them even told us our steaks were all cooked correctly!! The place might look the part but it certainly doesn’t deliver. Thank goodness our holiday cottage was excellent.

My husband and I were excited to try this restaurant, having been recommended by family. Unfortunately it left a lot to be desired. It’s an expensive restaurant with starters averaging around £12 and mains at around £30. It also tries to give off the vibe of being a more luxury restaurant with a lounge area and expensive decor. However it did not live up to the standard it had set itself with the prices and building. The food was definitely sub par and the service was lacking. We had the scallop for starter (coming in at around £14) which was one small scallop on some masked up pork. It was little more than one mouthful and was under seasoned. The main course was a vast improvement and actually very good, although again it lacked seasoning throughout. For £30 you wouldn’t expect that. We ordered quite a pricey bottle of wine for the table which was brought along in a wine bucket and plonked on the table. I’m not trying to be pretentious, but when you’re spending that kind of money you would expect the wine to be poured to try and the glasses filled. We also had to ask twice for the wine cooler to have ice put in it so it was actually cold. I don’t think it’s the staffs fault, they were very nice, but they did seem to be understaffed, only having 2 front of house staff in for the whole evening service. Overall it was a very underwhelming night out.

We went to the 1783 restaurant for my fiancé’s birthday on a Thursday. It’s a cosy place and very well kept with nice decor, we were fortunate it was right next to our B&B. The menu looked delicious so we were excited for a meal that wasn’t pub food for our stay in Yorkshire and final night in Reeth. The meal started well with delicious wine and the goats cheese ‘Bon bobs’ for starter were lovely. However, unfortunately we were left very disappointed. I ordered the cauliflower steak, which was not a steak at all but 4 pieces of normal boiled cauliflower. It had no flavour and was certainly not worth the money. When paying the bill I mentioned this to the waitress and she apologised that they had actually run out of the steak and made a joke about the chef just giving cauliflower instead. At no point had anyone communicated that the steak was not on the menu, so it felt like they had deliberately ignored it and tried to serve something else sub par at the same price, which is clearly not great customer service. In the end they agreed to give a 50% discount on that dish, which I appreciated but they should have really just taken it off the bill. I would have much rather been told up front that the item wasn’t available and I would have ordered something else. My fiancé ordered the sea bass which he said was OK, but nothing special. We were also ignored a few times throughout the night and had to wait a long time to actually pay. I appreciate it was a fairly busy night and there were only two people working, so I’m sure the service would have been fine in other circumstances. Unfortunately wouldn’t recommend or go back in a hurry, it has great potential and lovely setting, but overall our experience was not worth the money.

A romantic meal for 2 on a Saturday night turned into an emotional roller-coaster. First there was a surprise at the 4 unappetising tortellini served as a mains, then even a bigger surprise at the taste of hard uncooked pasta. Memories of when my children were little and first learned to cook came flooding back (semi-cooked pasta), however seeing that I was expected to pay £18 for 4 uncooked tortellini’s, I asked for them to be cooked. 10 minutes later 3 tortellini arrived soggy in the middle and still with large peripheral area hard to chew. Decided to opt for halibut on a grilled cauliflower base (my other half had it for his supper). 20 minutes later something vaguely resembling my other halves meal had arrived (costing £26). I had a taste and the memories of when I was learning to cook came flooding back. The fillet was fried, not poached like other customers. The fish was hard to chew, tasted bitter of well used oil and a tiny sprinkle of overcooked cauliflower added insult to injury. Sent it back. Complained to the lady who appeared to be in charge at the time. No apologies for the fact that after a day of walking the dales and the moors I was now savagely hungry, but not enough to eat what the chef had churned out. I was offered a cheese plate on the house, thank goodness it was not cooked by the chef and it was lovely. The waiting staff were lovely and thoughtful (earned a well-deserved tip). The person in charge however made faces that I was in the wrong and being awkward. 4 days later and I am still reeling in shock after that experience. The chef needs to either go back to cooking school or join an AGA club as he is incompetent.

The service was great and the food was very tasty. However, I ordered the ravioli and the portion was much less than I anticipated and was extremely salty. Despite this, my partner ordered the chicken breast with chips and received a large portion and this was cheaper than the ravioli. The dessert was excellent, we had the cheese board and ginger sponge pudding. Overall, we had a lovely time, the food was great, I just wish that the pasta portion was larger. Would recommend if you want a fancy meal, however if you’re walking the coast to coast and want a big portion maybe try somewhere else in Reeth.

Although not staying at the hotel, we booked for the "fine dining" menu in the restaurant. At £38 a head for two courses (plus a "chef's snack" to begin) it's not cheap but absolutely worth every penny. Inventive combinations of top-quality local ingredients, cooked with craft and precision and stunningly presented. This chef is seriously talented - this place doesn't appear to have an entry in either Harden's or the Good Food Guide yet, an omission which hopefully will be rectified soon. It's an attractive building, and the dining menu is ambitious. The ingredients seem good, though we did wonder about some of the claims: "chalk stream trout" is unlikely to be "from the seasonal larder of the Yorkshire Dales". Flavours were generally rich, even overwhelming, with too many competing flavours at times, and unnecessary sweetening. Service was well intentioned and occasionally rough at the edges - e.g. trying to clear dishes while two of our party were still eating.

Gunnerside room as good as ever with its view over The Green and beyond. Dinner booked in 1783 and our server was Sasha. She was great. Wines by the glass accompanied the superb food in modernised surroundings. Each course was very tasty and well presented. The cheese board was the highlight by a country mile with 8 or so morsels of 'out of this world' fromage. Breakfast was amazing too. The best I think I've ever tasted. It was cold and wet but beautiful in Reeth and in winter many of the cafes were closed or full to bursting. We tried the Burgoyne that sits impressively at the high end of the green. A large, plush lounge, a log and coal fire warm and welcoming and someone appeared and was very happy to find us coffee and cake or biscuit. This is primarily a hotel and evening restaurant, with afternoon teas (you must book in advance) rather than a place that is geared up to hosting dozens of weary travellers in need of coffee. But they do offer a service and were we glad of the fire, the rest and the time to sit and recover while a cafetière of coffee was prepared. The evening menu looks very interesting - a four course tasting menu for non-residents and a choice of that or two or three courses for residents. Very tempting. We were shown a typical room and we checked the rates and this is a place to come back to for overnight and what promises to be an excellent meal. However, if you want a coffee and a nice lounge, they are happy to welcome you. Dogs are welcome and the carpark at the rear provides one way in (and a place to leave the boots.)

My other half and I came to Reeth for two night as an end of term treat – I wanted to find somewhere special to eat as I was planning on asking my now fiancée, to marry me. I came across the website of this fantastic establishment and booked to have dinner there during out visit. Straight away, on the telephone, the service was fantastic. On the evening we went everything was perfect! The ambience, the pre-dinner drink, the food, and a special mention to Jake our waiter who was superb! I highly recommend visiting here for dinner as an extra special treat. I am delighted to say that my partner said yes and the bill came with a card of congratulations from the chef, management, and Jake as well. We feel in love with Reeth and The Burgoyne so much – we’re planning on having our wedding reception there next May!

We usually hate donning a collar and tie for dinner and I must confess, I worried that our treat at the Burgoyne would be just a tad old fashioned, with doilies and antimacassars. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong! The Burgoyne is in a class of its own in Upper Swaledale - super friendly service, cosy atmosphere, unpretentious modern British food and a good wine list. At £45 for four courses, this was both good value and top notch - lovely atmosphere with diners of all ages enjoying a sense of occasion in a classic country house setting. The pork belly with black pudding was delicious and our hostess's lemon meringue looked (and apparently tasted) amazing. You certainly don't HAVE TO dress up, but it somehow feels right because the hotel clearly goes to a lot of trouble to create a smart, grown up and well-heeled dining experience. We'll certainly return - staff charming, chef super friendly and food and wine excellent.

We dined here twice during our 4 night stay. Had this review been written after the first meal it would have been a low 2* star review. Frankly that meal was poor and for £45 per head before drinks it was way over priced. Let's get that dinner out of the way. Smoked salmon and fruits starter with two snippets of salmon each less that an eighth of the halved strawberries in size - led to no balance in the dish of salty tang v sweet, just a totally sweet taste with a mean potion to boot. They bought some more salmon, when the waitress saw my distress, for those who had chosen this starter but the whole dish was poor. Then medallions of pork - three very petite medallions that a walker in Dales would never charge their batteries on. These should be thicker and juicy, not thin and dry. Veg? Well roast tatties and two bowls of veg, no finesse, just like you might present at home for Sunday roast; but the ladies were eating white fish and the vegs were not appropriate that sort of choice. Roast potatoes and plaice...?The dessert was just ok but for £45 per head this all seemed poor. For one of us it was £47 because they add a cheese supplement of £2 ... the serving was not generous but the cheeses were excellent. A nice gesture to guests that night would have been to waive the cheese supplement after that dreadful starter. But my guess is there was no management on site aware of the issues in the dining room or empowered to act. We had 4 nights there. What about a night cap on the house to try and see if they could avoid our eating out every other night? The second dinner was better, hence the 3* overall. But we ordered two bottles of wine, white then red. It was our Wedding Anniversary; we were celebrating with friends. They bought the red Rioja, opened it and went through tasting; no question of perhaps leaving it to breathe; we had to chase the white most of us wanted to drink first which arrived nearly ten minutes later, after the starters. Sorry but this is basic, bring both colours at the same time, or ask the customer the order they want them in please! The dining room was full and clearly understaffed with two servers on a Saturday night. Glasses for the different colours - white then red - had to be asked for. 4 people and two different wines ordered means 2 wine glasses for each person as soon as you can bring them; it is basic to front of house skills. The wine waiter should also bring a fresh glass with the second wine bottle ready for its opening and the tasting. The duck main was good, cooked perfectly; the same roast potatoes and two pots of veg arrived, which if you are there and eat in each night is boring and our leaks were well over in terms of boiling. The dessert of carrot cake was better because I avoided the first night's poor choice. Remember this is £45 per head and frankly we have done far better in so many places at £55 per head including drinks - you will not get down to that price at the Burgoyne unless you keep to house wine. Maybe the Yorkshire folk are not so tight as they are portrayed, because they seem to love the restaurant! This was average 3* to poor 2* when value and quality are taken into account. The nice people who work here are charming but to get to the price the public are asked to pay they need training and the chef needs some finesse. I actually felt sorry for the waitress on the first night who was doing her utmost to please whilst serving dreary food. She asked about the problem with the starter and dealt with it as best she could. She gets this review up to 3*, just.

Treated ourselves to an early anniversary night meal at the Burgoyne as we were staying in Reeth for a few nights. We reserved our table a week before online. On arrival we were shown to the lounge for a drink while looking at the menu. Diners were then taken through to the dining room for 8pm. The price is fixed at £45 per head with choices from a 4 course menu. We had grilled haloumi and melon for our starters. Both very nice and well presented. This was followed by the soup course which was sweet potato and red pepper, again very nice. Mains were lamb with minted mash and venison. Both really nice. Desert was peach and nectarine panecotta very nice but not much of it, and sticky toffee pudding with espresso ice cream. A lovely meal in classy surroundings

The ambience is delightful, the host and hostess charming, the service excellent but mostly the food is of the highest order being prepared by an innovative chef who has learned his trade there over the last 20 years - that must be a record for the Dales. Try it, you will not be disapointed.

Just got home from a walking weekend in and around Reeth with a group of old colleagues. Last night we ate at the Burgoyne Hotel, all 17 of us. We had preordered off the four course meal and were not in anyway disappointed. The welcome was formal but inviting, we were made at ease as we sat drinks orders were taken quickly and officiently by staff who were very clearly happy, confident and at ease in their work. The owner of the hotel was also very attentive telling us that he was from Nottingham (where we are all from) he was eager to engage with us all about this and his time in the milatry. We were a little full after our first two courses so one of the parties asked for a delay on the next course. As an ex chef I know how important timings are so apologised. The owner then asked me into his kitchen where I met the calmest happiest chefs I've ever seen in my career in catering with a full restaurant and busy service. They just took the Micky out of my tshirt tan! We enjoyed the rest of the meal, in fact I wrapped my cheese and biscuits up as was so full and we enjoyed them later on in bed watching the England's women's football team win! What I really want to say about this amazing hotel is that to find the balance between very hard work and treating your staff well so that they are happy is a hard one to find! Perfect and excellent on every level, thank you so much for having us! Club mustard ate here on 27th June 2015

We (me, my husband and our toddler) decided to have a cuppa in the sun in Reeth after coming back from some leisure cycling. We spotted a table with some chairs on the sunny terrace of the hotel and decided to sit there. Although it was lunchtime and the hotel was busy serving lunch to the residents, the hostess(owner?) warmly welcomed us, brought us cushions and promptly and very warmly serviced us tea, juice for the child and some cake. Overall, although we did not stay in the hotel or had a meal in its restaurant, and were just passing by and had a quick tea break, we were very happy to receive such a warm welcome from the hostess. This stop at that lovely hotel contributed to our lovely outing this day!

We have never had a meal here before as the previous owner did not cater at lunchtime. The new owners (3 years now) do and so we booked for Mothering Sunday. The decor in this place is lovely, comfortable and just a little formal so you will feel more at home with a jacket than in jeans and a tee shirt. We sat in the lounge by a fire for drinks and to order before moving through to our table. The 3 course lunch was terrific value at £18 though we spent rather more on Champagne. The menu was quite extensive and varied and all the dishes were freshly made using top quality ingredients. We had no complaints with the food and the service was attentive and quite formal though still friendly and not over bearing. The portions were large enough but not so large that we could not all manage desert. If you have not been here recently you should try it now.

Despite being a very large group the food was all served hot and fresh and those of us who had walked a dozen miles or so earlier in the day were relieved to see that nouvelle cuisine portion sizing has not reached the Burgoyne. Those of our party who stayed overnight at the Burgoyne said their rooms and breakfast were excellent too. Lovely to have drinks in the lounge area before being invited into the dining room(most places just put you at your table on arrival). Gorgeous decoration and we were made to feel very welcome. We were a large party, but all the orders came out correct. Nice to be able to select a 1/2 portion of roast beef and Yorkshire pud (as personally I struggle to eat a full 3 courses - but don't like to miss a course out!) Plenty of veg and plate/tureens hot. Homemade bread was a nice touch too (I chose Rye)Only comment I would make about the food is - my personal choice is for sauce/gravy to come in a jug so that I can pour how much I want/or none at all rather than it coming already on my food (although extra was put on the table in a gravy boat if I'd wanted extra).I'd definitely book a further visit, especially if I was celebrating a special occasion.

Have been Visiting Reeth now for 7yrs and always eat at my favourite place the Overton House but when we tried to book for Nov 3rd 2012 they where closed for holidays so the week we went we decided to give the Burgoyne a try as it does call out to you and has been recommended, I have to say that it didn't live up to my expectations and we felt there was no Atmosphere at all very strange in fact and the food and service were poor the greeting from the man who was front of house was was very welcoming but after that it flopped as you never really saw anyone once you were led to the dining room and they shut you all in and didn't return till they came to clear the plates which is when they ask you if everything was all right with the meal, well it wasn't but by then it was too late. Guess maybe they had too many complaints in the past and decided just to clear off. Still that's my opinion of the place but I would visit tor a coffee and sit in the lovely comfy snug lounge with fire and it is Dog friendly so it does have its good points. Still give it a try you may have a better experience than us.

Came here for afternoon tea for my Mum’s birthday. The grounds and decor inside the coach house are lovely. The afternoon tea and range of sandwiches and puddings were amazing and you could tell they were all freshly made, unlike a lot of other afternoon teas I have had. There was a good selection of teas to choose from and these were refilled. The scones were lovely and still nice and warm, not hard or difficult to cut into. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, they went through each filling and part of the afternoon tea also. Although this was a little bit more expensive than other places for afternoon tea it is definitely worth it for the good quality food and presentation. Would definitely visit again!

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!
