Bun & Bean in Lewes

We were her only customers. We ordered the exact same thing and waited 40min for 2 burgers. The young lady - as nice as she was- was super ditsy and could not remember our order. She came to us after 20 min to confirm, two burgers with vegan cheese and onion chutney + 2 kimchy vegan loaded fries. Before serving she said the burgers were ready but messed up the fries, she only prepared a non-vegan versin which my partner has. I should mention that an old mate of hers was there chitchatting during that time. We were not impressed by the service, it’s poor, borderline unacceptable. She did give me a refund for the fries i never had. Food is good though. Hence the 3 stars.

Love this cafe. The burgers are amazing, all vegetarian/vegan and made out of delicious fresh ingredients. Coffee is excellent too. Oh, and the chips with vegan cheese and kimchi ❤

Pros: the veggie burger itself is excellent. A lot of care has gone into the patty, and it was well flavoured and prepared. Cons: - The chips are not very good. They’re basically an afterthought, seem to be ready-frozen and weren’t salted. Very expensive for such low quality chips. - The place was really grotty. The table was dirty, the floor looked like it hasn’t been cleaned in a week. Dog hair and other crumbs etc everywhere, and we arrived at 11am. I think in any catering environment it’s pretty basic that as soon as customers leave you clear and WIPE the tables and chairs, and at the end of each day you hoover and mop the floors. I wouldn’t come back because I’m worried about the hygiene of the kitchen.

Wow . The lack of awareness with speed, organisation was insane Yes the vegan burger was tasty … as was the beer .. but did that outweigh the incredible frustration with the snail pace of service, the answer is no Ordered two burgers and fries Took an age to be spoken to even though there were hardly any people waiting,the man behind me gave up all hope and walked out just waiting for any sign of service Burgers were eventually put down.. ate half as was getting rapidly cold.. had to go ask if she had forgotten my loaded fries, she said no but then proceeded to pull out a bag of frozen chips from a feeezer and pour into a tray only after taking the order and making two drinks at a glacial pace for the people that walked in after us So I asked for a refund and didn’t want the fries seeing as they hadn’t been started yet but our burgers were already eaten Really awful service and zero awareness of the situation No idea how that would run if there were more than the four people inside and we were the only two who ordered food. Poor show

So good to have true vegetarian flavour burger options when the trend is to imitate meat flavour. Lovely cozy small place with a very good friendly service.

Had a lovely afternoon here having a flat white, gluten free sweet potato burger, loaded kimchi/cheese fries and a lemon lavender kombucha! All delicious and very reasonably priced. Beers looked good too so will definitely be back! Very kind staff and cozy vibe.

This was a nice find in Lewes. The burgers were top notch and I especially loved the bread which was home made (by a friend of the owner). The lady who served us was pleasant and smiley, there is a small sitting area out the back which was cosy and there was a definitely a vegetarian/vegan feel about the place as with a lot of plant based restaurants. It was a tad expensive I would say BUT I am used to paying northern prices so that might be why. I'd gladly come again though if I were in the area.

Such a great find just down a side road from the high street in Lewes. Lots of veggie and vegan options. Had the sweet potato burger which was AMAZING. So fresh and tasty. Chips portion was great too and really yummy. Got a great chilled out atmosphere in there and look out for the 80s items on the shelves. Reminded hubby of his youth lol. Brilliant place so glad we went. We'll done bun and bean, we loved our visit

I'm not vegan. I'm not even a vegetarian. I eat meat fairly regularly. I've never been a massive fan of burgers. And yet I find Jamie's burgers absolutely delicious. I eat one almost weekly and I always want one for the next meal. It is more tasteful than most things, it feels healthy and is quite filling. The place itself is a pleasant one to hang out, with good music, good beers and the best old fashioned in Lewes. (In a can!) I can't recommend it enough.

The green burger is the best veggie burger I've ever had. Extremely tasty.

Very, nice. I'm not a biased vegetarian so can honestly say it was delicious however the price for the burger was fair (for lewes) the price for the extras was extremely inflated and far too high of a markup. Would go again but would not be a more than a once a month thing.

Love the concept, really impressed with the range of craft beer and how seriously they take their coffee- they've clearly had plenty of great roasters beans. Think we got them on an off day though- my partners latte was horrible and the banana bread was ice cold, stodgy and tasteless. Same three tracks on loop the entire visit too bizarrely! They seemed to be struggling with service even though there was only three tables so perhaps it was understaffed the day we went. Bit of a shame as the place has all the right ingredients for an excellent cafe.

Since my first review 2 years ago. I'm really pleased to see how this place has developed. The meals aren't huge, but just right for lunch. The homemade burgers are seasonal flavours. Their Christmas nut burger was a delightful mix of flavours and textures. The loaded fries with vegan cheese and red onion chutney was delicious.

I'm not even halfway through my burger and I've had to post a review, it's absolutely heavenly and at under £6 an absolute steal in this day and age. Going to be a regular haunt for me as I work my way through a delicious sounding menu, it's got loaded vegan fries with kimchi! ...might have to return tomorrow!

Great veggie sweet potato burger. Warm, friendly and thoughtful service.

This is a cosy, comfortable eating and drinking space with outside seating too and a rustic decor. The menu was small and simple which I really liked as it gives you the confidence that everything is fresh. The guy serving, cooking, making coffee - doing everything- was calm, capable and very welcoming. Unfortunately I was in a rush and I didn't have time to try the coffee. My Five Spice burger was really delicious, and I could have had a choice of extra toppings such as avocado, cheese (vegan available) and many others. I couldn't stay long but I really enjoyed my time there and felt very comfortable. I will return with friends and more time! I really think this place is worth seeking out.

Really helpful, friendly service with delicious food and coffee. So nice to find somewhere that can accommodate a gluten free vegan and well worth going out of our way to find it.

Had my first takeaway from here today and it was delicious! Great vegan burgers and really tasty sides, would happily come back soon, food didn't feel greasy or bad and staff were friendly. Recommended.

Eating out as a coeliac can be a stressful experience sometimes but after corresponding with Bun and Bean via Facebook I had confidence in trying it out. I was served by the lovely Hollie, who despite being on her own, with a backlog of orders and the prospect of having to clean down all the equipment prior to cooking my GF delight, made me feel super welcome and accommodated me without batting an eyelid! The GF buns are divine, coffee delicious and the sweet potato burger was yummy (should come with a messy warning for your face though!) Thank you Bun and Bean! I will be back and hopefully will allow other Coeliacs to feel at ease coming along too!

Fantastic coffee, vegan snacks and an exceptional craft beer selection too. We’re yet to try the burgers for which they’ve become famous but I would confidently call this Lewes’s best barista coffee, and they’re a friendly bunch too!

First takeaway from here. Delicious and well-filled veggie burgers (we had sweet potato with halloumi), served quickly and for reasonable price. Very happy.

I'm vegan & my boyfriend is GF & vegan - this lovely little place had some of the best vegan burgers we've ever had! Proper whole food, not weird fake meat stuff, not oily and a choice of toppings - personally hate vegan cheese etc but they have that and dairy cheese too - but we opted for kimchi and avocado toppings on the sweet potato burger - delicious, we added a homemade naturally sweet snickers bar + espresso to finish. The food was super clean and wholesome, the best kind of vegan food in our opinion! Very filling and very satisfying. Highly recommended!! Wish we lived closer!

A little gem in Lewes! The cafe has a lovely vibe and is beautiful decorated with plants and cute pictures. The food is really impressive, me and my dad had the tofu burger and a raw chocolate desert! I like everything about this place and more so that the food was so tastey and light, not greasy and heavy! I’d very much recommend this to anyone who appreciates a friendly nice atmosphere and good quality food.

A beautiful place to relax and enjoy the delicious food and coffee

The menu is pretty tiny with only a couple of burgers (which do change periodically), and there are not many sides either (I wish there were things like potato wedges for example), but you have plenty of options in terms of customising your burgers, and everything I've eaten from here tastes fantastic. The restaurant/cafe is tiny, but there's always been space available so this has never been a problem. It's bright and the services has always been friendly.

The veggie burgers here are a real treat, and the coffee is expertly crafted. The owner and staff are warm and welcoming (it's a great place to come for a chat). A hidden gem of Lewes!

Went there for lunch and the food was pretty tasty! On the downside ... they need to consider getting a different lady serving customers - she clearly doesn't know how to treat new paying customers. I didn't get her name but she was the older of the two and expected us to know there wasn't menus on arrival / it was on a board, then said she was too busy to take an order for coffee when I was unable to get up and pay as I was feeding my new born baby (I had to do hold my 7 month old on my lap whilst my husband fed her as there wasn't a feeding chair - this wasn't as issue for us mind you as you go with the flow with kids) and keeping my dog under control. There was only 3 couples in the restaurant and trust me it wasn't buzzing.... she stated get your husband to do it! From having a degree in retail management I would get rid of her / get her trained in customer service, as she doesn't reflect well on a cool trendy place like that! The food was good mind you!

Food delicious but burger small for price. Served up on a plain wooden board with no side trimmings so looked a bit lonely. Just 2 of us in there and both of our orders were incorrect. The gf bun was served with the wrong burger initially and the cappucino ordered was served as a flat white. After wanting to go here for weeks, we won't be making another special visit to go back..

I love , love , love this place. My daughter said it was the best hot chocolate EVER. The guy that runs it is always so help full and fun.

It baffles me that people still pay £2.80 for a grimey Costa flat white when you can instead get what is truly the best Flat White in the world in Bun & Bean up the road, a beautifully presented organic coffee that actually tastes of coffee; and that's for £2.70.

Always spot on, if you haven't been you have NO IDEA what you are missing. Guy's a genius, they really are more then burgers. I tell everyone I know about the place, get down there thank me later.

We are regular visitors to Lewes and on this occasion wanted to try somewhere new for lunch on a very wet grey day. This place came up as dog friendly on the net so we thought we'd try it. It's tucked away from the shopping area but only by a couple of minutes walk. That meant it had a more balanced atmosphere with locals as well as visitors. It's only small but we managed to get a table. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly to us and the dog (who got plenty of treats). Coffee was excellent. The food is based on two types of veggie burger with variable toppings. We tried one of each and both were excellent and full of flavour and texture. We'd definitely be back.

We were so delighted to find the B& B open last night and even happier with their excellent sweet potato burger served in a gluten free bun . A good choice even for a committed carnivore .Not many local foodie places stay open on this amazing evening and aside from the smoke from all the torches there was a pall of cheap burger fat in the air . As more and more of us become aware of the terrible sufferings of animals reared for meat and dairy products, it is good to find yet another purely vegetarian and vegan establishment. My wife and I came across this one during a recent holiday in the area. It is a small but characterful cafe with very friendly and helpful service providing mainly burgers and specialist coffees. We opted for the sweet potato burgers with lentils and other veg, and topped with avocado. They were made to order and were the best burgers we had ever tasted. We will certainly be back when next in the area!

Lovely quiet space for morning coffee and a think

We ate at Bun and Bean on our journey through Lewes on the recommendation of a friend... we weren’t disappointed! We ordered two burgers, one sweet potato and one mushroom. The sweet potato burger was amazing! The mushroom burger also very good but maybe missing some garlic :) We thoroughly enjoyed the dumplings that were on offer also (must order these sides when you visit) We had a great chat with the owner Jamie before leaving, we will definitely be back anytime we are in the area! Thanks Jamie!

On the outskirts of town it's one to easily miss but if you make the effort you will be warmly received and enjoy a lovely cup of coffee whatever milk you can tolerate. I'm glad I made the effort

I'm a meateater but this place could convert me. Delicious bean burger, good coffee.

Bun + Bean seem to be doing everything right. Their burgers are fantastic; you get two choices of vegetarian patty and they'll both sound so delicious it's hard to choose, you also get a choice of toppings. I'm not sure where they source their buns from but they are some of the best I've had. They stock craft beers from the likes of Unbarred, have genuinely special speciality coffee, and even have homebrewed kombucha! All served up by genuinely friendly and nice people.

Lovely cafe, really small but cosy - owner was very friendly and helpful, and the drinks were lovely. Very relaxed atmosphere - would recommend to anyone.

Both veggie burgers were even better than the last time I came. They also did great dumplings and vegan chocolate cake. Offered vegan cheese and gluten free options as well. Very good and the people serving were very friendly and the music great.

person who was in there was so lovely to us and so helpful from the moment we walked in. even though we were very late and close to closing time, they said don’t worry and take as long as you need. they knew the burgers in and out as they make them themselves, and so i got the tofu special burger which was INSANELY amazing. never had anything like that before. i got vegan cheese and a bun and my pals got veggie toppings instead. we also had some lovely beers which they knew everything about and they could really describe the taste to us too. also HIGHLY recommend the banana split carton drink. i’m going to go find it online now to buy. so tasty!!!! finally, to top it off there’s a cute mini outside bit, good coffee and even some home baked goodies (i got this date and chocolate ball to take with me and it was delish!!)

A small place with two choices of veggie burger with choices of extras (I.e. cheese, avocado etc.). Very tasty, even for a meat eater. Coffee was delicious too. Would recommend, especially to vegetarians.

A small but perfectly formed cafe with exceptional service and atmosphere. Always felt so well looked after — just hope its not full when you arrive! These are by far the best veggie burgers you'll ever find and the coffee is fantastic. They even experimented with a decaff pour over just for us.

A great little cafe just off the main town centre. I had a Vegan butter bean burger, whilst my partner had the Aubergine variety. I followed up with a vegan ‘snicker’ bar. They have a great range of coffees and local craft beers too! Lovely staff and friendly atmosphere.

This place really deserves to do well. I'm not a vegetarian but the burgers are fantastic, great coffee, friendly service, top selection of craft beers including gluten free and lovely cakes. Its small and only had three tables and the menu is small and simple (just two types of vegeburgers) but thats its strength. It does what it does beautifully, and superb value for money

We popped in here today for my birthday lunch and it was a real treat. The handmade veggie burgers were beautiful, both in taste and in presentation. The bistro is a quirky little place, that really deserves a visit.

Stopped by to see what vegan options were available and found lots of great food all very well prepared and tasty too! Lots of options for the burgers. Kombucha was just perfect. Something for everyone in there. Will try a coffee next time I swing by. James was a great guy to chat to, creating a chilled out welcoming setting.

Curiosity got the better of me so i went in to have a coffee and a burger. The man working there was lovely, ended up having a great chat about coffee and beer, and on top of that the coffee and food was delicious, definitely reccomend.

Great to see a vegetarian/vegan cafe - with vegan sweet treats too! Coffee excellent, burgers were good, some additional vegan condiments would be a good addition (garlic mayo, chipotle ketchup etc).

Tucked away in a quieter part of town, this little gem is well worth a visit, offering the most amazing vegan/vegetarian burgers, as well as delicious cakes and coffees (and cold drinks - even beers). There is also the option of going gluten-free with burger bun and cakes.

The owner/ barista is a true gent taking time to educate us about the beans and their origins etc. By far the best coffee with the most intense and rich crema. So much attention to detail, this place is a must...
