Our bi annual gathering to celebrate rememberance, and once again really impressed with the level of personal service, the staff in the bar were amazing, sarah and her colleagues were really on the ball, helpful and attentive whilst dealing with a very busy early evening. 5 star service...and the food went to shabby either!!@ Gary. Meet up with friends from France. Pleasant place with lots of history. My room was on a slant with plenty of creaking floor boards. My room was on the main road which was a busy road starting around 0415hrs. The rooms were very warm and uncomfortable at times. Non the less it was an enjoyable stay.

My second quilting retreat stay here in this lovely old inn. This time with 8 friends so we were put in the conference room which was light and roomy. We can’t praise the staff enough - they are all so friendly, attentive and just wonderful. Meals are hearty and tasty. Bedrooms are spacious and comfy (albeit some were unable to change the radiator down!). The ladies changed my duvet to a sheet and blanket as I normally sleep under a quilt (of course! And you do know the difference between duvet and quilt?!), and it was no trouble to them at all. I highly recommend this place - my husband stayed on the Sunday night for our 50th anniversary and we visited Fullers Mill garden - there are lots of places to visit from Long Melford, which itself is a lovely little town to stroll around, including the very special church.

We were visiting the area and booked the bull for Sunday lunch lovely old building in the high street on arrival we were shown to our table in the dining room . Good selection in the menu I had mushroom and truffle soup followed by lamb shank my wife had prawn and avocado salad followed by a beef Sunday roast everything was very tasty but the time between the starters and the main course was at least 30 minutes and it wasn’t busy . The front of house staff were excellent.

We, a party of 2 couples, visited The Bull for lunch twice during September. Our first visits. With surging menu prices and mediocre food being served in so many pubs and restaurants these days it's such a nice surprise when you have lovely food put in front of you at very affordable prices. A comprehensive menu with a good range of dishes so it was easy to choose meals again on our second visit. The staff were super-friendly, obviously knew their trade and clearly run a tight ship. Teamwork was obvious. The kitchen also provides something rarely experienced these days, the food was hot, not tepid, hot - as were the plates. That doesn't come by luck, it comes by an efficiently run kitchen. Hats off to everyone there, you should all put in for a pay rise.

Was suggested to go here for lunch by a volunteer at melford Hall. Was easy to park. Very relaxed and nicely laid out. Found a table and went to the bar to order. Made young lady aware of a food allergy and she was very good and let the kitchen know straight away.We ordered the steak and cheese ciabatta with side salad and the fish gougon ciabatta with tartare sauce and side salad. Good coffee and food was lovely a very large portion well presented with lovely fresh salad. Lady checked bk that meals were OK 👍 very nice 👌. Would definitely recommend and return in the future when holidaying in the area in the future. Thank you 😊

We very much enjoyed our food at The Bull. We were there for dinner on the 20th. We only had drinks and a main course but there was plenty of choice on the menu in general. The homemade pie was delicious as was the sea bream with prawn risotto. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We are going back to Long Melford next year and will definitely make a point of eating here again.

Sunday 18th at 7 30 am. No hot water. Bathroom needs a dam good clean. You could grow enough potatoes in the dirt on the extraction fan to make several bags of walkers crisps. The place is dusty, cobweby in to many areas. Very tired, needs decoration and an overhaul. Staff lovely, food very good.

My wife and I had a lovely birthday lunch at the Bull. I had visited several years ago, but it was her first time. The atmosphere was nice with the late Medieval feel of the building. The bar-server was friendly and the food was really good. We had some halloumi fries as a starter, and I had the fish and chips. My wife had a dipping share-platter as a main. Hers had chicken strips, breaded mushrooms, and real onion rings (not the minced things) served with dips and a baked Camembert. It was really worth the visit.

Having booked well in advance we were greeted with the news that there was a party of 19 ahead of us plus a couple of tables and that they would get to us as quickly as possible. Did not realise that we would wait for an hour and ten minutes to be served our main course, a wait made all the more galling as other diners who arrived after us received their meals before us with one party actually having dined and were in the process of settling their bill and leaving as our main course was being served. Whole experience spoilt what, up to our lunch experience at The Bull, had been a lovely morning. Please do not take bookings if you are unable to fulfil the level of service expected.

Lovely surroundings but have always found the restaurant to be hit or miss and sadly today was a bit of a miss. Chicken burger that was absolutely cremated to seconds from dust and no promised onion rings on the plate, Gammon that had quite a bit of gristle on it (good for the doggy bag though!!) But the rest of the meals were fine. For a Thursday lunchtime it was steadily busy but service was very slow though we wernt in a hurry so it wasn't too bad but 2 of our party went for the hot drink and small dessert option and the dessert arrived 20 mins after they had finished their hot drinks... Staff as always courteous and friendly.

What a lovely hotel and restaurant best for miles, so why oh why shut the restaurant on St Valentines and heard us all into a pokey bar?? I booked to have a lovely lunch with my wife in the nicest restaurant around, on entering we were told restaurant shut, ON ST VALENTINES DAY!!!! the bar was packed, had the atmosphere of a farm bar, whoever decided to close the restaurant on st Valentines day is in my opinion working in the wound job. So, what did we do, I walked over to where we checked in and check in and told them to cancel our booking. I'm not celebrating with my wife St Valentines day in something little better that a works canteen. Ps it said nothing about the restaurant being shut and if it had we would have gone elsewhere

I booked online for a family lunch, for eight of us, and made a special request (in one of their 'message us' sections of the booking form, for the room where we could sit in private. Several of our party are hard of hearing which I explained. I heard nothing other than a confirmation of the booking. A week or so later, again on the booking form, using the "Manage my booking' section, I emailed to confirm that we had a private room, but again heard nothing. Eventually we called in to make sure we had been given the room, only to be told that they had taken other bookings for the private room, but we were offered, and shown , a quiet corner of one of the dining rooms, on a round table which helps as we can lip read if we are facing each other. Turning up on the day we were casually directed to the bar where we ended up sitting on a long table, with other people around us and a fair amount of noise. Our quiet corner table was empty, but the room was cold and not prepared for us to use it. We wouldn't have minded so much if I hadn't sent two emails and actually gone in person to confirm a private area. The food was excellent as usual and we all enjoyed our meal, but communicating with each other was a big problem. The service was rather slow, but the food was definitely worth waiting for. Staff were apologetic, but unable to change the situation. This is the second time our booking has been mishandled, during December we also booked a table for a lunch for ten of us, only to be told on arrival that they were expecting us that evening, NOT at lunchtime. They did rise to the occasion though and supplied our lunches eventually. We did have to wait a while, but the food was very good when it came.

This pub is a perfect example of faded splendour. Magnificent building. Food absolutely ghastly, reheated Brake Bros or equivalent. The 'kitchen' must consist solely of fridge freezers and microwaves. Place was full, so others must like it.

We often call into the Bull for a couple of drinks on our way home . Over time the place seems to have become more and more tired looking , smelling of an old people's home as you enter the place which is quite off putting. Our most recent and possibly final visit was as previous but this time the men's toilet floor was covered in water leaking from the pipework from the urinals , disgusting to say the least !!! I mentioned it to the guy behind reception and he said he knew about it and a plumber was coming out on Monday!!! This was Saturday teatime ... God only knows what state it will be like come Monday!! Come on Greene King start investing in your somewhat run down establishments..

Overall a disappointing lunch. We were not allowed in the restaurant with our dog, despite the website saying they are dog friendly. The lunch had all the hallmarks of being reheated, at least in part. The roast beef was supposed to be pink, according to the menu, but it was too thin to tell and there was too much gristly edging to it. We had looked forward to eating here, but we won’t be coming back.

My wife and I made an on the spur of the moment decision to pop out for a drive and a glass or 2. Our meanderings took us to The Bull. It was late Sunday lunchtime and did not look too busy. After finding a table in the main bar area we decided to eat as well as enjoy a drink. Our burgers were perfectly cooked, juicy & full of flavour, served with excellent fries. We were then tempted to order deserts. Both were very tasty and we left the pub happy to have revisited the Bull to eat after a 2 year break. Service was also very good from both bar staff and those who served our meals. We will not leave it so long before our next visit.

Awful lunch on a beautiful lovely hot day so six of us got together for a family lunch , the room was stuffy and chairs hard and uncomfortable , the Bull used to be a prestige hotel but now just another pub and the first surprise was you had to go to the bar to order your food and pay for it in advance and having seen the food I can see why they want payment up front . Me and the wife went for the sharing platter as a starter but were told sorry but unavailable , another in our group went for the salad but also unavailable , tried the garlic mushroom starter but they were overcooked and full of oil . My wife had lasagne and you can see the burnt offering served up in the photo , it was awful , I had hunters chicken and it was just not pleasant , chips were awful and salad looked like it was prepared two weeks ago , one of our group had a Pimms and it had a sprig of mint in the top , the leaves of which were black , fish and chips was another choice and although it looked good on the plate it was really a poor effort as the batter had swollen to a huge size but it was just air and little fish . So all in all a terrible lunch and areal disappointment .

Ate at the hotel tonight for dinner with my wife. We live locally and have eaten here before. Food was good and we both enjoyed it. Hence the 3 star marking, but other issues meant that was the maximum number of stars we could award as the reality was it was only 1-2 stars and here’s why…. Three issues tonight. It was a cold winters evening but the outside door of the hotel was fixed wide open, as was the inside door into the bar/restaurant. It was very cold in the room when we sat down at our table! I got up and tried to close one of the doors, but was told it had to stay open due to the guests going in and out. After 10 more very cold minutes I spoke to a member of staff and I asked her to close the door. Lots of objections but she reluctantly closed it. Secondly, I don’t understand the hotels policy on service. There were 3 uniformed members of staff behind the bar talking to each other. There were few people eating so it was a a quiet night. I was told that we had to come to the bar when we wanted to order our food. Why not table service to make the customer feel welcome? Very irritating! Finally, when we went to the bar to pay (note there was no table service with the bill brought to us), I was simply told the price we had to pay. Something didn’t feel right as it sounded expensive for two meals and a couple of drinks. I asked for a bill and when I got it an extra £5.60 pint had been slipped onto it. The server was the same lady who wasn’t happy when I asked her to close the door! Coincidence? I would simply ask you to make your own mind up dear reader…….. 🤔

What a terrible disappointment! We booked lunch for two for a Christmas meal. The food was pre-ordered and we arrived in ample time. Our table was in the bar but we were told it had not been set yet but will be shortly. We had drinks and waited, and waited....After half an hour nothing had been done so i asked at the bar. The table was laid in a rush then and i was told to order food at the bar. I said the food was already ordered so why did i need to order? We than sat for another half hour before the food arrived. This was now 1 hour later than our booking. The food was burnt and dry in places by now and we were underwhelmed! They never brought us the bill when we finished just told me at the bar how much i owed, so hope it didn't include a service charge because the service was awful. They have not made any contact with me about my complaint and i would not go back or recommend to anyone.

I have not had an experience as poor as this is a very long time. Me and my family went for a meal at The Bull during the Eat Out scheme, as we had been to another Greene King Pub that had been lovely. But this was a bad experience from the moment we walked in. The last time I went to The Bull was about 10 years ago, and the decor has not changed since, it was as dark and dated as I remembered. The staff were disorganised and chaotic. During our hour long visit we were served by four different members of staff. When we first sat down two waitresses had a strange disagreement over who was going to serve us, which meant we had to give our order twice. We were asked 3 times if our meal was okay, and despite us asking twice that water still hadn't been given to the table, it still never came. The food was average, the kind of thing you'd expect at wetherspoons, the food used to be much nicer. My mother ordered the Salmon Florentine, which was meant to come with 'buttered potatoes', there was certainly no butter, they were incredibly overcooked and had black marks on them (Of course she did not eat them). The food came within 10 minutes of us ordering, and given that it was a busy evening during Eat Out I must assume that it was all just shoved in a microwave. If it wasn't half price I would have kicked up more of a fuss. I would not recommend going here, there are much nicer places to eat in Long Melford, don't waste your money.

Just some feedback really for the chef and waitress. Waitress was very pleasant as were surroundings but I'm afraid the salad wasn't quite right. Advertised as a summer salad which included radish, tomatoes, cucumber, watercress, avocado and also I selected chicken as a topping. Just once tiny squashed piece of avocado and the chicken was so dry I left it. I didn't like to complain as nobody else said anything bad about their food and also because it was on the deal. I think that maybe they need to look at the quality of the salads in particular regardless of whether a special offer is on or not. Surroundings however and also service was excellent.

We visited for a Birthday celebration having been here many years ago. We were not disappointed in that the staff were as friendly as ever and the rooms very comfortable. This was a winter stay so the log fires were a welcome addition and the smell of wood smoke and the comfort of the lounges and bar were a real bonus. One niggle was that there were a number of bookings for Christmas parties which meant that the restaurant was out of bounds for residents and food was limited to the Bar. The food there was fine although not spectacular and the bar was packed until people moved to the restaurant for their party. On the Saturday we waited over one hour for our starters which was far too long and bar staff were very apologetic. The management need to review this policy. Having said that, we had a very enjoyable weekend and would recommend it to others although possibly not at Christmas.

Food very poor quality, and poorly cooked. I don’t think the could have a chef, if they have they need replacing.

A few years since last visit here and am pleased to say the food has improved considerably, we went for the sharing platter, on which everything was well cooked and tasty ,another in our party had the nachos with chilli , something i am not a great fan of but these were listed as "home made " and they really were and absolutely delicious .The baby also made short work of her sausages, chips and corn and gave it a big thumbs up.Very relaxed atmosphere with an overworked lady at the bar , who ran two bars and found time to bring the food out as well. Well worth a visit.

Called into the Bull for a lunchtime drink. Hadn’t visited this establishment for a few years but remember it being a very nice hotel and restaurant. Sadly it is now very ‘tired’ looking and run down which is a shame because it is a lovely old building and could be so much better.

Repeat visit. Food good in parts. Sausage & mash fine. Signature gammon & eggs, which are so proudly displayed on the front of the menu cards, again not available as was the case 4 months ago because the scottish eggs, which are part of the dish, are not in stock. This is very sloppy indeed. Suggestion: There is a very good butcher a little further up the road which sells them. Fish & chips fine but the chicken of the IPA chicken basket fried almost to a cinder.

Came here a couple of Fridays ago - but forgot to put on a review. We came with friends for lunch - restaurant was nicely busy but didn't have to wait long for our meal. I had the sea bass scallops with rissotto - delicious! My husband had the sausage and mash which was generous and tasty. Our friends had something off the senior menu with dessert and their meals were very nice too. Service was timely and our waitress very pleasant. Will definitely come again.

We stayed at the Bull Hotel, overnight 31st July/1st August. We stayed in The Melford Suite. The premises have the appearance of an old coach house. Very comfortable room. Equipped with tv and a large wardrobe.

We have frequented The Bull a number of times over the past 20+ years. On this occasion it was to celebrate my mum's 80th birthday, the first visit since The Bull had transferred to Greene King ownership. There were 7 in our party aged 11 to 82.

The Bull looks great from the outside so we popped in for a quick drink. The were only a few other people in the bar and it immediately lacked any sense of atmosphere. The barman was very friendly.

It's typical Greene King pub food. Matched to a price, and similar (in my experience) to any GK pub. Depends what you have, but Sirloin steak was tough and tasteless. Fish was good. You get what you pay for!

I booked a table for four people in what I thought was the restaurant this turned out to be the bar. I did ask when I booked (as I went in personally) to be in the restaurant and should have been told it wasn't open at the time of our visit. We had no service to speak of and I wrote our order out on a piece of paper and gave it to the person serving behind the bar! Having told this person that I had two retired butchers eating please could they make sure the meat was what was ordered. The food was OK but not as expected.

The drinks and food are relatively cheap here. The fish and chips is very good along with the steak and ale pie. The staff are friendly and obliging. This is a good place to frequent for lunch.

We had lunch in the bar area after visiting Melford Hall. This is a Greene King property and offers a varied menu including various vegetarian options. We all opted for Sunday lunch. The bar area has a nice atmosphere. The staff were welcoming and friendly, service was prompt and the food was good and reasonably priced. Large portion sizes. There is also a restaurant and outside seating. The only downside is that parking is on the main road so at busy times it might be difficult to get a space. We would eat here again if we are in the area.

Well cooked and bursting with flavour. The surroundings make it seem an event. Impressed that the menu caters for dieters and veggies. Breakfasts great too.

We both plumped for the Salmon and Mature Cheddar Fishcake, with Hollandaise sauce and roast baby potatoes, peas and spinach - for only £5.99. A tasty meal together with a couple of pints for around £20. Brilliant!

We’ve been here many times over the years but today I was disappointed. My lunch choice was their ploughman’s. Ham, pork pie, cheddar and Stilton cheeses, brown “cob” & butter plus salad etc. Sounds lovely. Why oh why does the butter come right out of the fridge so it can’t be spread. Small moan but important. The “cob” was just sliced bread which was a shame but there we are. I do like a pork pie but not this one. Pastry so very thick and meat gristle with far too much pepper. Cheddar cheese ok but small and the ham was lovely. So far very average but not good enough for a hotel of some repute.

Could easily be "Very good" but on two occasions the chosen option was not available. At breakfast no eggs Benedict could be ordered because no sauce Hollandaise available and at dinner no "Signature Gammon & eggs" because the kitchen was out of Scotch eggs.

Myself & my family had a meal here on Saturday night , we ate in the bar area which would have been ok had the large table we had not literally been squashed into a corner , seating was very uncomfortable! We then had a very long wait until the starters arrive followed by a painfully long wait until the main course . We were told it was due to the fact they had to cater for a large party ( still trying to work out why would we have to have less of a service ) fact is if that’s the case then surely meals in bar should maybe be cancelled for that time , now for the food , when my meal arrives it was cold in parts and tasteless, not the standard I would expect from this hotel , have eaten here before and can honestly say it was not as good as before , I didn’t return it because of the massive wait to get the meal I just wanted the experience over with , such a shame , would I go here again ? No is the answer to that one !

Ordered soup, waited half an hour, it arrived lukewarm, with two bits of bread and rock hard butter in foil. Sent it back, reheated. Appalling. Restaurant half empty and 2 pm, so no excuses. Such a shame, used to be a lovely place, but sloppy service and casual attitude ruin it. Might as well go to a greasy spoon. Really need to lift their game. We are local and like to take overseas visitors there

Table for 4 booked for 730pm. Arrived promptly but put our order for dinner but 3 of our orders were already sold out at 730pm! My goodness, what will will eat they did not have any back ups, and our party had to make do. Come on we booked early in the weekend, and they were not full then, why had they not put extra away in case of over orderring? I do not think this restaurant will survive, come on, they were not even even full!!

Interesting and varied menu, good price, friendly helpful staff. We have small appetites, so just had a starter and dessert. Both were excellent, the dessert was light and fluffy. The pub had been recommended by a friend, so we tried it but it was so good we went back again the following day.

Booking is essential. Staff are lovely. Service slow. Food very big portions. Good variety of gluten-free and other allergies options. The small bites are very large 4 pieces of garlic bread. Ploughman's freshly cut thick ham. Unfortunately, the gluten-free bread was very stale. Herb butter was really nice. Cheese was really nice Big portion of salad. The turkey sandwich fresh and full of filling.
