We were staying in Dartmouth and looking for a good, dog friendly place to eat and Brown's fit the bill perfectly. As it was a Monday evening the place was very quiet and we were offered a choice of two tables with plenty of space for our 2 Irish Setters. The very friendly waitress (sorry I didn't ask your name!) quickly took our orders for wine and food. Starters of roast chorizo and a field mushroom topped with goat's cheese were delicious and the mains of venison and wild boar ragu were every bit as good. Sadly, we had no room for desserts, but there looked to be a good choice. They don't have a car park but there is plenty of free on street parking on Victoria Road; I guess the place gets very busy in main seaon though so you may have to use one of the nearby pay car parks and walk along. Worth the walk though as it's certainly a place to recommend.

Back at Browns for the first time in a few years (had not been to Dartmouth in far too long), food and ambience just as lovely as we remembered it!! Seems to be an entirely new menu, with great veggie options and they now are doing cocktails - had the weekly special earl grey martini which was delicious

Attended Browns for the first and last time on 23 August 2023. Poor food and grossly overpriced. One vegan burger was cold. Strangely, the other wasn't. Fries were served in a thimble. There were 15 - yes, I counted them. Tortellini was ordered by two people. Six pieces on a plate without even a leaf of salad for £19. One person ordered duck that was tough as shoe leather. Staff were inexperienced and inattentive. Wouldn't return if the meal was free. The food, cost and service at Bayards Cove Inn and The Royal Castle Hotel are far superior.

Lovely place to stay. Room was very clean and quiet and well provisioned. The bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast could not have been better with plenty of healthy (and less healthy) options all served with a smile. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but the menu looked very appealing. The provision of parking vouchers was very helpful as there wasn’t any parking at the hotel. The location was great too, just a short walk down to the riverside.

We weren’t greeted at the entrance despite making a reservation, nor were we provided with cutlery or condiments for our main course. They made many mistakes with our food despite the requests being very simple and clear, e.g. swapping out sweet potato fries for regular fries. They weren’t apologetic and seemed completely clueless. This happened for 3 out of the 4 dishes and they failed to resolve their mistakes twice. The prices are a joke for what is received, not only for the service but also for the food . The veggie burger came dry, with no sauce or salad, and out of the freezer. It had two patties stacked on top of each other - making it impossible to eat due to the pathetic, tiny stale bun it came in. To make it even worse, it cost £16 ! Don’t go here

Worst and most expensive food I've had during our 3 night stay. On way back from Eden Project we phoned about to try and get a table and this was only 1 available. Now I know why. £18 for 3 king prawns, a bit of salad and something round with sweetcorn in it. We ate in Kendricks and had a 100% better meal for £20 less. I always give honest reviews and give praise where it's due and very rarely give bad ones. Hopefully someone with authority reads this and other bad reviews that have been put on recently. Shame I was driving and didn't read reviews 1st as we would have got a takeaway and sat in our room.

The food we had was lovely and fresh and the drinks (local ales) were excellent. The restaurant doesn't know if its a traditional pub or an up market bistro. They need to ditch the cheese plants and give the place a makeover..With a few changes this restaurant could stand out from competitors.

We booked here for dinner a few weeks ago last minute and we seated on a spacious table in the bar area - nice decor inside, but quite dark overall.A helpful young girl served us throughout - starters were ok, thai fish cakes were small and tasty, the mushrooms in tarragon were very good, the chorizo was nice (it would have been nice to have served bread with this , as it was everyone had a piece of the bread doorstep my mushrooms were served on) and the scallops were ok but why serve 2 and a half scallops and pop a prawn under the half (tiny) scallop???Service was slow.!Mains were a mixed bag - our sons steak was dreadfully overcooked (he asked for medium rare) and a strange texture. I did mention it to the waitress who said what do you want me to do? and as we didn't want to wait any longer he ate it!My prawn chilli linguini was average, full of brown shrimps plus the prawns and the pasta was stuck in a clump. The pork dish was very good and the monkfish (if a little dry was nice. The crushed new potatoes served with the monkfish had onion in them which my daughter can't eat , this ruined the meal for her as she would have asked for none if the menu had stated onion. We didn't bother with pudding. The rose rosari was delicious as was the red chianti. We were overcharged for an extra bottle of rose but after a chat with the owner this was immediately taken off and he didn't charge us for the substandard steak! Our evening was marred not only by the above but the party near us who were evidently friends of the owner and you couldn't hear the waitress at times when she was trying to tell us about the specials. She had to lean in between (not good during covid times) my husband and son to serve my dish instead of walking around the back of them but the owner was too busy chatting, serving his friends and getting in the way !As we left the group eventually moved to the other end of the bar but it had spoilt our evening .Disappointed !!!!!!!1

Visited the restaurant with my partner. Firstly, we ordered a starter each, these were okay but nothing special. We then both ordered steaks (both medium rare) for mains. We waited over an hour for these and when they arrived they were seared on the outside but raw in the middle. We sent these back and asked for medium rare steaks, this took another half an hour and when they arrived back, they were the same steaks we had cut into cooked again. Although they were now cooked through, twice cooked steaks have a tendency to be dry and chewy and this is exactly what we found. There were only two waitresses for the whole restaurant so service was slow, the younger lady was lovely however we found the older lady quite rude. The meal came to over £80! This is the most overpriced meal I have ever paid for, especially considering the waiting time and a twice cooked steak. We were not offered any discount for our inconvenience. For lunch on the same day, we visited Rockfish. This meal came to £60 and was amazing quality and amazing service as well as being closer to the river side. Would not recommend Browns and will not be returning.

My wife and I had dinner accompanied by two friends. We had eaten in the restaurant during a previous visit to Dartmouth in the autumn of 2020 and were surprised to find that the menu had changed markedly - and not for the better. It was apparent that the restaurant - which was busy - had staffing issues as there were only two waitresses serving all tables, the bar and bills with inevitable delays.Three of us had monkfish and the fourth had lamb. We all found the monkfish to be rather dry (usually quite a moist fish). When we had finished our main course the older of the two waitresses asked if everything was alright with our meals and my wife remarked that we had all found the fish a bit dry. We were stunned with the response “Well, you didn’t say that when I asked you earlier. I suppose you want a free dessert or something”. My wife pointed out that this was the first time the waitress had asked if everything was ok and I said that the purpose of the remark wasn’t that we were looking for a reduction in the bill but, as she had asked the question, we were giving feedback to the chef - if he didn’t know about the issue then he couldn’t do anything about it for the future. There was no apology from the waitress.Given the issues with the changed menu, the limited staff and the unacceptable response that we received we wondered if, in fact, the ownership had changed since our previous visit which had been very good.Would we recommend the restaurant to others - certainly not on this experience and we would be highly unlikely to go back either.

We were put on a table in a corner out of the way and waited twenty minutes for a starter that consisted of 3 small scallops. We were told the specials were off, the mussels were off and so we chose prawns in their shells. Wet wipes were put on the table which we resumed were for wiping our fingers after shelling the prawns, but eventually we were served with a mixture of shelled prawns and shrimps which were pretty tasteless. At that point we got up to leave and refused to pay anything except for the wine and two gin and tonics we had when we first arrived. VERY disappointing. Don’t bother with this restaurant.

My wife really didn’t enjoy the main of cod with tomatoes, olives and smoked salmon and my daughter wasn’t impressed with the liberal use of balsamic vinegar. I would have rated this restaurant as four stars but the price for four was a little more than I paid at the Seahorse the previous evening, which seemed a little expensive in comparison as the Seahorse is a little more sophisticated and close to the harbour.

We visited the yesterday evening and ordered the Lamb Tagine and the menu Special: Fresh Devon Crab Liguine. The Special was anything but as it contained extremely little crab, when we queried this we were told that is how it is! The Lamb Tagine, see photo of what appears to be a partially eaten meal, it is in fact a very disturbed plate of food caused by my search for the lamb it was meant to contain, I did manage to find a few pieces but it was mainly Chick Pea. Having twice asked to see the duty manager a woman named Sue came to the table, I asked that we move out of earshot of the other diners and moved to the bar area, I informed her of our concerns and to but it bluntly she could not be bothered, She claimed that she herself had cooked the Tagine and it contained plenty of lamb, I doubt this claim as she was certainly not dressed for working in a kitchen, and as for the Linguine that’s was it is. The woman departed, I went to the bar and rather than create a scene I reluctantly paid for meals we ordered, albeit severely lacking in the main ingredients. On a positive note I would say that the young waitress was excellent and I am sure she would be welcomed in any catering establishment.

I noticed the table next to us was quite close, the menus were paper and no screens, so didn't feel very covid safe. Also the staff did not wear masks. We chose the steaks for main meal followed by the brownie and lemon polenta cake, which at the time was very nice. When the bill arrived I noticed we were charged £12 for a double disaronno, which I felt was high. We were both very ill all night afterwards, so I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

We went on a Tuesday evening during August 2020. There was a limited menu which was understandable. Having decided what we wanted, we ordered some red wine to go with my Lamb main course. However when we came to order food, we were told that the Lamb was no longer available. The starters were fine. However my partner's Fish goujons were burnt and my Catalan Monkfish Casserole had fish in it that had disintegrated (which is difficult to do with Monkfish). On a positive note the wine itself (Montepulciano) was excellent and the staff were very friendly and attentive.

I would like to warn people with asthma not to visit this restaurant. My asthmatic husband found the atmosphere in the restaurant stuffy and it made him cough. Rather than showing concern for him and offering a glass of water, the manager just asked us to leave! He tried to explain that he has always been asthmatic and sometimes coughs, even showing them his inhaler, but they wouldn’t listen. I completely understand that people are frightened of COVID 19 but this shouldn’t be an excuse for unkindness and rudeness. We were left feeling very upset by the experience and couldn’t wait to get out in the fresh air. Fortunately the lovely people at the nearby Floating Bridge pub were much more welcoming and rescued our evening.

We spend a lot of time in Dartmouth and decided it was time to branch out from our usual restaurants and try something new. I went with a couple of very particular eaters so was naturally nervous about trying somewhere new, but definitely needn't have been. The service was lovely - attentive but not overbearing - and the food was some of the nicest I've had in a while. All so fresh, and you could tell it was all home made; we tried a bit of everything, but standout dishes were the meatballs, tomato salad and steak with salsa verde (we liked the last one so much we ordered a second helping).Make sure to book a table if you're in Dartmouth over the weekend!

I stayed here with my daughter for one night and the second night with my new husband. Nothing was to big or to small for the landlords. I will definitely recommend as a great, clean and quiet hotel. Breakfast was also lovely. Thank you again.

Been coming to Browns for a couple of years now. It just gets better and better. The food is fabulous, the wine list excellent, and the service is personal, informal and warm. Absolutely loved every evening we spent there. Highly recommend this dog friendly bar/restaurant. Being a family business, you really get the sense that the owners are passionate about everything they cook and serve. We cannot wait to visit again in the summer!

This was my first visit to the restaurant at Browns Hotel having already enjoyed their gin selection at the bar 2 evenings previously. We were meeting up with family so were a fairly large group and I must say the owners were extremely accommodating. As recommended we tried various tapas dishes to share which was lovely as we all got to try something we might not normally order such as the monkfish and chorizo. I thoroughly recommend the Argentinian prawns cooked in sherry and their home made flatbread was gorgeous. The service throughout was friendly and efficient and I liked the tasteful decor. As a regular visitor to Dartmouth I will definitely be coming back to Browns, both the hotel and the restaurant.

We went here because of previous visits when the service and food has been excellent. The hotel and restaurant have obviously changed hands within the last twelve months. The wines are still good and well chosen, but unfortunately the service, on our visit (a Friday evening but by no means a busy one), was haphazard at best. The food varied between excellent and dire. We hope the new owners get settled in sufficiently to restore things to how they used to be because they seemed pleasant enough people, but maybe weren't experienced in this line of business.

Me and my partner came here for a drink for a couple of weekends and it was a super bar. Great wine list! We couldn’t understand why more people didn’t venture further up Victoria Road to come here. Stylish, comfortable and great service.

We recently attended the Burns Night supper and were not disappointed, from the hospitable welcome to the friendly banter with the staff, the evening could not have been any better. The staff were very attentive, friendly, interactive and could not have done any more to make the evening perfect.

Four of us ate here on a Saturday evening in early December. My son and his wife had eaten there earlier in the season and recommended it. We are all vegetarians and so the menu appealed. On the whole, there was nothing to be disappointed by. We had two fritatas and several salads between us and these were all tasty and substantial. As "mains" we ordered were Wild Red Prawns, which were fine, and baked Scallops which weren't (bad idea, we should have known. We had very drinkable SA Chen Blanc (£21) between us. For dessert we had between us a chocolate brownie, a crumble and an Affrogato, all of which were delicious. The total bill for all four of us was a reasonable £84. The service throughout was excellent. The restaurant was surprisingly empty for a Saturday night and the waitress admmitted they don't attract as much custom in the winter as the restauarnts on the river front. The atmosphere suffered a little from the absence of buzz. We had anticipated a pubby atmosphere but it felt more like a wine bar the evening we went. Were it not for the scallops and the vibe we might have given the final star. We will definitely return.

Browns - is a favourite place of ours - and we stopped by on a very busy night - hoping to be fitted in for drinks and tapas. The place was packed and as far as we could see no tables...however the Browns team came up trumps and said a table would becoming available soon. Ainsley was on brilliant form - not just accommodating us - but several other would be diners as well. No one was turned away and all accommodated.

i am very pleased to be able to review Browns and their new re-vamped menu -it is fabulous. The bar/restaurant has had a complete makeover and the food switched from bistro to more casual excellent tapas and sharing food. Really top notch food - served from the bar. We had octopus, beef Kofta's, wild mushrooms with charcuterie and chorizo flatbread. However, with lots more to tempt us, we will be back - and 'our' sort of food- really it is fab - try it:-)

What a awful place this is....The decor is good but the food and drinks are hugely over priced...Went for a Xmas drink and maybe food but left after 30 minutes, after having to endure the owner constantly talking about himself! He told us all the Dartmouth gossip and didn't have anything good to say about anyone...So we left and went to a very charming pub around the corner to eat...This is far to expenses and the owner is aggressive and rude!
