Nice freshly cooked cod and chips. Very good service. Managed to park outside and didn't have to wait that long. I particularly liked the fact that there was a table with salt and vinegar on it so you could put as much or as little as you liked on yourself.

Not particularly friendly service, £4.50 for a ‘large’ chips which were not anything special. While eating mine, I found a curly human hair in the chips which went straight from the bag to the plate - not the same colour hair as mine or my husbands! Not impressed and the chips went in the bin

Super fish and chip shop with cafe on the side. we stopped in after a day at the beach and werre delighted! The staff are all very friendly and the service was really good. There is a very good gluten free selection 1sifferent kinds of fish, fish cake, pies and puddings. Two of our group ordered gluten free dishes -fish and chips and a fish cake - and two regular fish and chips. All the food was delicious and portions were generous. The waiter checked our order very carefully and it just to be sure it was exactly right. We had a lovely pot of tea and some soft drinks and thought the bill very reasonable The cafe is as very clean and pleasantly decorated We’ll go again the next time we are in the area-thoroughly recommend Browns!

When we first had a take away it was really good, crisp batter, lovely squishy chips and large crunchy homemade onion rings. The last 2 have not been anywhere near as good and the latest was the worst yet. Mainly hard ends of chips, soggy batter on fish and onion rings which seemed like the frozen variety from the supermarket. Such a shame, we don't feel we could come here again.

This is the second time that my wife and I have visited this shop after 6pm and the second time that they did not have enough haddock in stock but that isn’t the main problem we have. For the second time, the attitude of the senior member of staff on site was terrible. A disgusting miserable old lady who couldn’t even greet us with a smile when we arrived and instead almost scowled at us when we placed an order and the indifference was written all over her face and in her attitude. My wife and I finally walked out when the young girl who was serving us had to ask the miserable old woman for a second time about mushrooms that we had ordered and she didn’t even acknowledge us.. the shop was empty (hardly surprising) so there was no need for this. We will never return simply because of the attitude .. the food we had previously was great but not good enough to tolerate shocking customer service and a grouchy attitude from a miserable old lady!!

We got a take away. This place can't get it consistent. Sometimes perfect, other times dreadful. This time was the worst. One of the fish portions was so dry as to be inedible. The chips were distinctly average. The place was disorganised and involved a huge wait. In contrast we went to another regular a few days later and it was streets ahead!Sorry, we won't be back now. We had 2 Adult meals and 2 children’s meals on a 2 for 1 deal (Meerkat Meals). Excellent service and food. Everything was cooked fresh and the portion size is adequate. The children had a meal off the children’s menu which included orange squash. They also had a Purbeck ice cream tub for dessert. The squash was a little too week and we had to pay for both ice creams despite the offer saying desserts included! Family of 4 fed well for just under £20. We will visit again. However, I did point out that the vinegar tasted “watered down” and there were a lot of cobwebs around which needed cleaning away.

Not only was the fish so fresh you could taste the sea, rather than the fat that usually masks the true flavour in most fish and chip shops. It's fabulous being able to find a chip shop that serves gluten-free, every night of the week. My other half has the normal batter and that's just as good. The food is always piping hot, cooked to order and never greasy - no matter whether it's a lunch time visit or an evening, at any time. The pieces of fish are generous, the batter light, crispy and we find a standard portion of chips between us two is plenty. My only regret is that I never try anything else on the menu, other than the cod and chips because it's so darn tasty. Definitely a treat to look forward to. I must get around to trying a fishcake! I do miss the slices of lemon they used to give out, as an alternative to vinegar for gluten-free diners.

I would recommend never visiting this restaurant around 8.30pm. Although the fish was cooked to order the chips must have been hanging around for some time which, surely, they must have known about. Brown's have at their other restaurant in XChurch made fabulous Home made fishcakes..Opening here, my wife looked forward to savouring without the yomp to XChurch from Poole.Had 3 now and 2 were overcooked. I don't believe they know how to cook them at Alder Road.I ordered 1 standard chips, 1 Jumbo Sausage and 1 Homemade fishcake at 1847 hrs.Delivered at 1910 hrs (23 Mins later!!!) given it was only the fishcake to be cooked.Fishcake was overcooked (and the sausage had been stood for at least 25 minutes before being served.Wife returned the fishcake but can't believe I waited 23 minutes plus for an overcooked fishcake which was inedible and returned immediately. Having had to take back chips before being cold, had a previous overcooked fishcake and with all the to-ing & fro-ing taking stuff back, plus this experience, I calculate in 3 visits have cost me over an hour in time waiting/correcting the problem and had only 1 good meal out of 3 with only one portion of chips exchanged and money back for one fishcake. I live round the corner from the shop so am local and have always found them slow etc, but my enthusiasm for Brown's taking over has now dwindled.Would suggest anyone to think hard before using them.(Plus they threw my receipt away when my wife got a refund having gone in 1 minute later to ask for it back too)

Don't often have fish and chips, especially at lunchtime, but stopped here on a whim, hoping to brighten up a miserable day.Ordered large cod and chips - from the length of the wait I imagine they went out to catch the fish maybe? An elderly man and woman were serving and getting thoroughly confused with it all, although it wasn't busy - the 'chef' seemed to be getting more and more frustrated with them, shades of Fawlty Towers!!The fish and chips when we got it was very poor - the chips were soggy and lukewarm and the batter on the fish was thick and greasy. We didn't get the lemon slices we were offered- but instead we had several long hairs inside the box with the food! It would be an idea for the elderly lady assistant to either wear a hat or do something with her hair for hygenic reasons.Probably the worst fish and chips ever experienced in Poole, where there are several excellent alternatives.

We shared Haddock and Chips, a home made Fish Cake, a portion of Mushy Peas and a drink which at £10.50 we thought was good value. The fish was beautifully cooked to order and the chips were excellent, I mean top draw, hard to beat. We were told the Fish Cake contained Garlic and Coriander which it did but it needed more fish as it was more like a potato pattie. We made use of the convenient parking outside to polish off our food before heading home.

This was just a standard chippy before, for take away only, but they've expanded to add a lovely little restaurant. We took friends for dinner on a whim last night, and it was great - the portions were generous, the food delicious, and the service was great. We had 2 small children with us, and the staff were very accommodating. Everyone raved about the fish (cod and haddock between us) and I had the squid which was wonderful. They also had some unusual extras - we had spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce which were great, and our friends were delighted with their pea fritters (which we'd never heard of before). Staff were happy to adapt the children's menu to let my son have a saveloy with no issues. All in it was a lovely little find, highly recommended.

This would be five stars but for the wait for food and the quality of the coleslaw. We had fish and chips, pea fritters, pineapple fritters and coleslaw - all GF.The food was nice, with the exception of the coleslaw which was very watery, lacked substance, and tasted weird ... like it was 'on the turn'. I definitely won't be getting coleslaw from there again, instead I'll buy a pot from a supermarket for much cheaper ... or be prepared and make my own which is unbeatable ;-)The portion size is huge! We couldn't finish our chips. The wait was the other aspect that bothered me ... 30 minutes. Now I wouldn't mind this so much for GF especially as it is often cooked to order; but one chap came in after me and ordered GF fish and chips and got his order before me. I don't know if this was favouritism or what ...I'll be back because there's a few more things I would like to try on their menu, and in that time I'll see if I am served 'last' again. The outcome of service will dictate whether I become a regular user ...There's parking outside the shop in the form of a cut in layby, access into the shop should be OK for disabled, but there's a step which might be challenging for wheelchair users.

My piece of cod was a bit of a let down. The batter was incredibly pale, as if it could have done with a couple more minutes cooking. The actual fish didn't look like a whole fillet, it looked more like reshaped fish but it tasted OK. The chips were alright. The bill came to just under £10 so not expensive. Not sure if I'd try there again. There are several fish and chips shops in the area which serve far superior food.

Fantastic place for Coeliac travelers - you must visit this place if you want the traditional British fish and chips gluten free style. The batter was light and tasty and the 9oz piece of cod and fresh, boneless and delicious. I couldn't eat many chips as I was so full but they we also good.Suggest you take your fish and chips down to Brankstone beach to enjoy the fresh sea air and seagulls!

I Googled gluten-free fish & chips just by chance and I found Brown's. They have two shops one in Christchurch and the one I went to in Alder Hills. The gluten-free batter (recommended by the Coeliac Society) was excellent. I haven't been able to eat fish & chips for thirty-five years, so it was a total luxury to eat fish in batter again. The menu is extensive and not just deep-fried food and the chef offers a daily menu. And they deliver. And they offer a wedge of lemon with their fish. This really is a top quality take-away at reasonably prices.

Good friendly service. Fab food (great Whitebait), all in a very atmospheric bar displaying lots of nautical ships and items related to Lord Nelson and the Victory. A great place to bring people from overseas who don’t get to experience this sort of unique experience right on Poole quay. Fabulous.
