Browns Bar and Brasserie in Brighton and Hove

As we don’t know Brighton well, we chose Browns for a family celebration thinking it would be a safe bet. Apart from feeling very disorganised, the food was dreadful. None of it was good quality (we had lobster, steaks, fish & burger), cooked terribly and poorly presented. For the cost of the bill, it was dreadful.

I booked this restaurant for my friend’s birthday on a short break in Brighton. It is part of the M and B Chain. There were no other guests there when we arrived but a couple more tables came with 10 mins or so. We ordered wine which came swiftly and was poured. We then ordered our starters and main course. Within minutes our starters arrived. My scallops were tepid at best. Literally as soon as we finished our plates were whisked away and our main courses arrived. Every time the waitress came she poured us more wine. We finished our mains and were given the dessert menu. By this time the table next to us had just received their starters. We just felt really rushed, there were only two other tables in and it was early evening on a Monday . We declined dessert and I gave them my discount voucher for 20% off food. The bill arrived with a service charge which we refused to pay as we felt we it was service at speed. We had literally spent 45 minutes in there. The waitress practically threw my coat at me and it was only after we left that I realised they had changed my voucher so that the 20% was off drinks only. That’s shocking. We don’t have this chain as far as I know in The Midlands, but on this showing I wouldn’t go even if they did. Go here if you are in a hurry!!

Food was alright, could add more vegan options. Curry with asparagus may sound ,a bit odd, but it was good actually. Tried the Sakura and pink grapefruit drink, it tasted only of grapefruit. Quite busy and fairly loud. Overall not too impressed. Definite room for improvements with the vegan options. Also staffs wine knowledge could've been better, kept suggesting wines to my husband, that weren't close to what he asked for. They let you taste the wines before committing to one though, which was nice.

Restaurant was quiet.Service was slow. Temperature of food (breakfast) was only just about acceptable. Staff offered to reheat food but I am always reluctant to allow this.

I had heard good things about Browns and it definitely lived up to it's reputation! Good food with lovely vegetarian and vegan options, very friendly and attentive staff in a fine dining setting. I really liked the veggie thai curry and would definitely eat here again! Thank you 😁

Down for a days shopping. Had booked a table for 2:15pm and when we arrived customers were finishing their meals so it quietened down really quickly. Very useful to know if this is a regular pattern? Annie was our server and she was very attentive and friendly. Our food arrived in very good time. The starters were hot, the main chateaubriand course was delicious. Not too much salt seasoning on the steak which was a huge relief as we don’t like too much salt!! There were too many onion rings. We would have liked maybe the dish balanced not just with onions rings & steak but also a few tomatoes or just something to break up the large amount of batter! Just a small suggestion as we only had a couple each and the rest were wasted. We went for a shared pudding which was very nice too.

Popped in for lunch thinking the food looked good . Must say very disappointing starters sent back as undercooked. Main course ok but I feel for what you get very overpriced. Staff ok but feel the whole place looks tired and in need redecorating. Sadly would not return

Decor and setting is great. Staff are all neatly dressed with crisp white aprons.. Prawn and chorizo starter had 4 small prawns - much more chorizo, slightly our it balanced but tasty. For main we had the prawn and crab pasta - 4 small prawns and a tiny y amount of crab. The pesto sauce was oily and it looked unappetising, it didn’t tart any better and was a real dissapointment. I would definitely not order it again. We raised it with our server who said the crab was stirred into the sauce, but u less you wanted all of the oily sauce, it was lost. 3/5

Starters of duck salad and chicken skewers were tough but edible. Mains of sea bass, seafood linguine and shepherds pie were uninspiring but edible. The Picpoul white wine was very good (£31.50 a bottle). Service was OK although I was unimpressed when a complimentary cocktail appeared on the bill at £13. Main courses were £18-20 and the portion sizes were very modest. Not worth a return visit.

80th birthday party of 11. Service bang average, don’t want that blame the waitress as she seemed sweet but probably had to many tables to look after. Two of us ordered burgers and they were cold, not warm, not tepid but stone cold. Went and asked to speak to manager explained that I didn’t want to make scene as it was a birthday celebration, but the two meals should be removed from the bill. Which in fairness were immediately, but then to add that the meal was probably cold due to the cold lettuce or tomato in the burger bun was an insult to my intelligence ‼️ Add sitting with an empty glass for over an hour and not being asked if I wanted a sweet, would thoroughly confirm my view that this place is all style with no substance. Avoid if you want good food and decent service.

Good value set lunch menu, staff is always helpful and friendly. We opted for rump steak and chocolate fondant and both were delicious.

We took my Mother here for a roast on Mothers day and was very disappointed. My starter was prawns and chorizo and came out with 4 measly size prawns a few slices of chorizo spread out to try and fill up the pan. Our roast dinners came out and none of them had roast potatoes on them! We complained and they brought out a few mins later 3 servings of roast potatoes all of which were undercooked, soggy and extremely small - clearly the dreggs of the pot. Definitely the worse roast potatoes I have ever had out at a restaurant/pub. My mothers dessert was meant to be caramalised bannas, which they came out stone cold with a sugar glaze just brushed over one side of them. We complained and the replacement dish was hardly any better. The chef needs to look up what caramalised means! Although they did take £10 off the bill (big deal) we've been here several times over the years and last time wasnt anyting to write home about either so will definitely tick this off the list as one not to return to, too many other lovely restaurants in Brighton to choose from over here.

I booked a table for my mum, my brother and I over a week before we intended to go. My brother is vegan so when booking I made sure to put this in the notes of the booking. We arrived today at the restaurant to “ are you the party with the vegan lady” to which my mum responded “my son is vegan yes, he’s almost here”. She responded with “ well we don’t do vegan food”. I’m was absolutely gobsmacked. I’d booked well over a week in advance where I had left all details about the three of us and what we could and couldn’t eat. I also left my number and my email address and they failed to contact me to let me know this. So we had to leave as they had nothing on the menu suitable for a vegan. Shocking! Will NOT be returning. We were fully accommodated at very short notice by the Ivy just across the road. Lovely service from the Ivy!!

Came to Browns for a birthday dinner and had excellent and attentive service from jarek who was so kind. Food was excellent, steak and lamb cooked to perfection.

Was ok. Visited with friends. Tables are small for 4. Service efficient but could interact better with customers and be a bit more cheery. Food was good (we had 3 courses)…but the curry advertised as asparagus and butternut, was broccoli and butternut?? Weird. Maybe they ran out of asparagus but tell the customer! Not sure if I would return. But we had a great night with our friends!😉

What a great shame, food was below par, Scallops were cold and raw, plates were cold and truly disappointing, The Burger was beyond dry, uninspiring and showed no imagination this was also cold and the cheese didn't melt. Th baked camembert was good, the bread dull and flavourless, the pear was not at all ripe so had no flavour, the chips were not cooked hard and also of course cold, we ordered simple dishes and the restaurant was almost empty, the food was taken off the bill and we left disappointed, a realm shake up needed, the restaurant itself has lost the elegance and beauty it always used to have, needs a lot of TLC

I attended Browns with my family for dinner, having previously dined at other locations I had high expectations. To my dismay the waitress was extremely rude and abrupt and proceeded to stare at us whilst dining making us feel very uncomfortable and rushed during our experience. We ordered the lamb which was asked to be rare but arrived blue which had to be sent back. As a result my daughter was very ill.

Lovely food, but served cold (as if the staff couldn't bother to bring it to the table from the kitchen). That was Scallops and squid starters. Then a rocket salad (tiny, a rip off for over £5) smothered in salt, and one cutlet of my lamb rack was raw (uncooked!). Do not go there!!!

Saturday lunch visit. Lovely venue. Food good. We had a caesar salad & a mango & feta salad with drinks. Friendly serving staff.

Pop in for some drinks and after we decided to go to the restaurant side for dinner. Warm welcome from each side, lovely service, good steak selection.

Simple fish and chips were well cooked and speedily served despite the place being full. Service was excellent, from initial reception onwards, particularly from our table server Chrissie who was non-stop active but always attentive and never forgot a thing.

We had mains and desserts. All I can say it was very disappointing. We had the browns burger, the meat quality was poor, served in a cheap bun, chips were too salty. The other dish was the prawn and crab linguine, not only was it a small portion, but there was 4 prawns! They were not even nicely seared. The chilli pesto had a nice flavour was too oily. Its no where near as good as it used to be. For £18 per dish it is extremely overpriced for substandard quality. Wouldn't go again, and wouldn't recommend. There are far better restaurants in Brighton, where the service, food quality, and prices are 10 times better.

Visiting a restaurant on your own can be daunting. I decided to treat myself after a family bereavement and my partner was unable to join me. The service was great, attentive and friendly. The food was top notch - hot and beautifully presented. Yes it was a bit pricey but you get what you pay for here. I look forward to visiting again soon under happier circumstances.

My sister and I came here for afternoon tea with my 2 kids (12/14) as a treat. The tea looked wonderful when it arrived, but I don't think the chef had ever made a sandwich before, and definitely hadn't tried them. Cheese and pickle were 90% pickle 10% cheese, way too strong to eat. Ham and Mustard were so strong I couldn't eat them even after scraping out the mustard. Egg mayo were a joke - absolutely no egg...just tons of white mayo - we checked all of them and found no egg! Only edible sandwiches were little salmon/prawn brioche rolls. The scones were nice but tiny, cakes were sickly sweet most of them tasting of lemon. Overall not a great experience and then when you get a bill for £92 and you need to go and get Itsu for the kids as they're hungry its not great.

Came here in September 2023 with two other friends and can honestly say it was some of the best food I've ever eaten. I had the rhubarb BBQ belly pork and the Mango, Passionfruit and raspberry Eton Mess, and it was amazing; portions were modest, so you weren't too full on the main course. Despite food prices being not bad for what they had to offer and the quality of the meal, the drinks- mainly the cocktails and wine selection were outrageous, with one cocktail going for £12. We didn't drink there after looking at the price, which is a shame because they looked so wonderful. After all, we had an amazing experience, and will defiantly come back.

Overpriced and poor quality cocktails, we were shown to a table on arrival where we sat down. I went up to the bar to order our drinks and the bar person brought them to our table. The Pina colarda was just pineapple juice with very little alcohol and at £11.00 a rip off. I went to the bar to pay my bill and was charged service on the bill. We will never go here again. There are plenty of other bars that don't rip you off like this.

A True Gem for Brighton in the Lanes. This great find welcomes you with friendly efficient staff serving you great tasting cocktails and more. You are not squashed in like a shoebox in this well laid out establishment. Will definately be back

Ate here with family for an early birthday dinner (5pm). Great friendly service. Food and drinks arrived quickly and we all enjoyed our meals and ate everything. The cod in particular was delicious. It was quiet when we arrived, but a buzzing atmosphere when we left around 7pm. Felt it was good value for money. Would dine here again.

The set menu is good value. We liked that they offered two or three courses also on the children's menu, with quality dishes. The mozzarella starter was really nice. Attentive and friendly staff, and efficient service.

We just wanted a coffee, we were left so long without our order being taken ( we felt this was because we were not ordering food ) we walked out and the staff were not bothered, treated as though we were a nuisance.
