Very pleasant pub with extensive menu. We went there on Thursday and Saturday on same week (off peak), seated in bar area. Meals were served in 40-60 min which is more than fair for busy establishment with such a variety of dishes. Servers offered top-up drinks and checked if food was good. Portions were generous and very tasty. Would highly recommend and glad we ignored the negative reviews.

Its a hard time at the moment for hospitality especially in small villages . Previous reviews nearly put me off from booking about the long waiting times . Mine and my friends dining experience was the best and the food was superb . They were busy and coped with the service with only small gaps in between courses . Very good menu with a wealth of choices . I highly recommend going you will not be disappointed for superb tasty food .

Absolutely shocking service. We waited 1hr 35 minutes for the waiting staff to bring out our MAIN course, when we explained we had still not had the starters she replied that they had “missed them off the order” and if we take the mains now we could have free dessert. We arrived at 19:00 and finally when we finished we left at 21:45…… no apologies, no explanation nothing. I’ve left this 3 days as I had asked for a response from the pub, but nothing. AVOID if you want an enjoyable evening.

After speaking to others who raved about this place we booked. I firstly enquired did they have a dog free dining area which I was told the restaurant was so I booked. The table was booked for 6pm. I looked for the restaurant staff to let them know we had arrived. Only the young man who was serving at the bar was evident. We did manage to get to the bar to choose a beer and inform him we had a table booked. He showed us to our table and put a wooden clipboard down with a menu on. He didn't bring out attention to the specials board which I noticed later. After about 20 minutes I had to go to the bar to ask if we ordered there or at the table. There was another young man appeared to help. Anyway we finally got our meals around 7.15 which I cannot fault at all. No one came to check it was OK. I had to go to the bar again fighting my way through the people drinking at the bar to ask for our bill. Yes it is a pub and obviously all the tables are reserved for dining which means standing room only for drinkers. Only one loo which needed a bit of TLC to say the least. Shame about the service as the food was good. I wouldn't go back.

From the moment we walked in we were made so welcome. Bar man was friendly, polite and efficient. Excellent menu choice. The service was spot on. Food was of high quality, fresh and very reasonably priced. We were a table of 10 and the service was excellent. You can tell everything was freshly cooked. We had absolutely no issues with wait times. If you wanted fast food then go to McDonalds. Thanks to the brilliant staff, will certainly return when in the area.

I’ve delayed writing this review because I empathise with the hospitality industry at this time. We have frequented the Brownlow on several occasions in the past and never had cause for complaint, but our most recent visit was terrible. I’d hoped it was a one off but on reading the experience of others, sadly I realise it really has gone down hill! We had exactly the same experience of poor service, disinterested and forgetful staff, menu not up to date, we were eating our starters when we were told our mains weren’t available! The soup of the day, supposedly a roasted veg, was a disgusting gruel like bowl of thick mush. Never ever seen anything like it!!! I’m not in the business but as someone who frequents many restaurants and pubs for food , I dare to suggest it’s not rocket science!! You need to get back to basics of excellent customer service and quality food. Less choice on menu would be preferable to the shambles we experienced . And another point, I know we’re out on a limb in terms of eating places being dog friendly, but personally I feel the world has gone mad!!! Having to share one’s eating space with noisy , smelly dogs is disgusting. Despite having reserved a table we were put on a table near the door and had to endure the smelly dogs and cigarette smoke from the smokers at the front door . Even getting to the toilet was a struggle to get through the dozen or so young people sitting around the pool table! I could no longer recommend the Brownlow Arms for a nice meal or a pleasant ambiance. I do hope management gets to grips with the issues, which are clearly commonplace.

Absolutely disgusting service and meal, we've eaten here a few times and will never go back. We arrived for a booked table to find a reasonably empty pub after the Sunday dinner rush. Had to ask to make drinks orders, when they came they were all just placed at the end of the table for us to serve ourselves. We then had to ask to place a food order, and waited 20 minutes before being told some of the starters ordered weren't available. In all, we waited over 1hr 15 for starters and 2 hours for mains. No acknowledgement or apologies. There were critical parts of the mains missing (fish and chips with no chips) and the kids desserts, a basic bowl of ice cream each, weren't served until after the adult dessert plates cleared. Anyone who has dined out with children will appreciate the uproar this caused. Members of the party had to leave prior to the meals arriving because they took so long. The service was absolutely disgusting. We spoke to the serving staff on 3 separate occasions to highlight our disappointment, specifically asking for better service on 2 occasions. We had to use the bathroom a number of times (understandable given a 3hr meal) and every time there were serving staff just sitting around having a drink. Staff were very argumentative when raised for a final time before paying the bill. There was ample opportunity to recognise and rectify the situation and none was made. The drinks were eventually reluctantly removed - quite insignificant given the disgruntled customers and food disappointment. I kept being asked 'what do you want' and a standard response of 'no' to everything reasonably suggested. No efforts were made to offer a resolution. The meals of those who had to leave were also initially left on the bill. I understand it's easy to focus on the negatives, but there was absolutely nothing positive to be said about our entire experience.

We last visited in January and had a great meal. The food this occasion was also very good. Also dog friendly, which is a plus for us. The problem being, when we arrived and stood at the bar for 15 minutes waiting to be served and then when seated the food took quite a while to arrive and then again we waited for desserts. I could understand if it was busy but it wasn’t, exactly the opposite. I was surprised by so many negative comments left lately, mainly related to the service but some related to the food. It seems maybe the establishment is understaffed, a pity after having such a good reputation. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and there weren’t many people eating at all. Hope they manage to get it back on track as it is one of our favourites to visit when in the area.

Food and service used to be great here. However it’s perhaps time for Barbara to retire as the long wait and sub standard food clearly suggests things continue to go downhill. The staff are underpaid and undervalued and don’t receive their share of the tips apparently.

2 of us dining. It took over an hour for our main, and both dishes were disgusting. Veg Thai green curry had zero flavour & water logged veg & rice. I added salt and still no flavour. It’s not difficult to make a veg curry surely?! Chicken supreme was literally (bone included) chicken plonked in some watery flavourless sauce. Over priced, flavourless swill served which we had to wait for over an hour for! Definitely not returning.

We were sceptical about going to the pub after reading some of the reviews on here but from the moment we walked in we knew it would be great. We hadn’t booked as we’d been walking all day and decided to give it a go on our way home. We were staying in the village so we wanted to support the local pub. We’re a family of 4 with 2 kids and our dog. We were served straight away at the bar by a lovely guy and was shown to our table. The food was fantastic! One of the best curry’s I’ve had. We’ve booked to go again later this week at the end of our holiday. The service was great and not one complaint from us. It was a cosy/friendly pub and was very popular! We can’t wait to go back.

My mother in law was a regular for Sunday lunch at the Brownlow Arms with her friend and we meet there on a fairly regular basis. After our visit there on Friday evening, we won't be going again! We had a table booked at 7.30pm for our friend's 80th birthday, we arrived early but our table was available so we sat down. At 8pm we had to ask the waiter to come and take our order. Our starters arrived and then we waited, and waited and at 9.45pm, we were told that our main courses would be 2 minutes. 15 minutes later, our main courses arrived. My 'chicken kiev' had every last bit of moisture cooked out of it and was basically a chicken breast with garlic butter poured over the top. My partner had the cod and chips. This was absolutely inedible and was basically burnt batter with no evidence of any fish inside. We obviously complained, and had the manager come and apologised, instead of hiding behind young, inexperienced staff, I would have left it there, but I had to fight to get them to knock the meals off the bill. It is a shame because this should have been a lovely night celebrating our friend's special day. We will spend our hard earned money elsewhere in future.

We booked Sunday lunch. The food (when it arrived) was very good. Unfortunately the young service staff did the best they could but were clearly under pressure. There were times when we (and others) felt deserted and had to seek out waiting staff. Perhaps cutting down on the number of bookings would help. We realise that the service industry is under pressure but people understandably still expect good service. On the plus side, we enjoyed the food and found that the prices for both food and drinks were very fair.

The Brownlow Arms is a very welcoming and comfortable inn providing a most pleasant rural ambience in the charming village of Caldwell. Outside, there is a good sized car parking area. Inside, the inn has cosy, clean and attractively decorated bar and dining areas. There is an excellent choice of ales on offer - ‘Striding the Riding’ was most refreshing. The menu of starters, mains and deserts is extensive, with a very good choice of meat, fish and vegetable dishes, and interesting flavour combinations. The monkfish Thermidor and rack of lamb with garlic, herbs, shallots and red wine jus were superb. The staff are attentive, professional, polite and very welcoming. Despite the inn’s obvious popularity and the busy pace of the staff, excellent standards of communication and service were maintained throughout our impromptu visit. The choice of food and its quality were most impressive. All courses were very well cooked and presented - simply delicious, and with good portions too. The sticky toffee pudding was delightful. This venue offers good value, high quality food in very pleasant surroundings. It is certainly a cut above the more basic offerings of many other local establishments - yet it remains relaxed, unpretentious and without fussiness. Thank you to all at the Brownlow Arms for a very enjoyable evening meal. We’ll certainly be back.

I've been coming here for several years and about 3 times a year. The food is fabulous. So much to choose from. About 30 main meals on the menu. The Belly Pork is my favourite. All comes with lots of veg and potatoes etc. Highly recommended

Recommended by our B & B hosts and what a good choicest turned out to be. We were a 'walk in' on a Sunday early evening and luckily they had a table for two. I would recommend booking in advance in future. Excellent menu choices and pleasant efficient service.

You’ll need your sat nav to find the Brownlow Arms in the cosy village of Caldwell on the Co Durham/North Yorkshire border. It is 15 minutes through leafy lanes from Scotch Corner and 30 minutes from the M6 over the A66 and it is popular to best to phone ahead. We had to book for a Sunday night and it was packed. No wonder. The Brownlow Arms offers a big selection of mouth-watering restaurant food and bar meals and we found it the perfect environment for a meal with friends. Our visit was in July but I could imagine pulling up a chair alongside one of their log fires and enjoying a pint of real ale after a walk in deepest winter.Chef aims to capture traditional country dining with an elegant modern twist. He does, and the menu – which also boasts fish and game - is augmented by a large selection of specials. Our scallop and crab thermidor arrived in a rich, creamy sauce and was appealing to the eye and palate. Sizzling pork with cashew nuts, spring onion and noodles proved a tasty alternative.Belly pork on black pudding was deliciously different, the Cumberland sauce adding a pleasing addition to the overall taste, and the 10oz sirloin was cooked to perfection. The meal came with an ample portion of red cabbage, al dente carrots and a tasty cheese treat as well as an ample portion of delightful chips. Chefs mission is simple, to serve delicious, affordable food that guests will want to return week after week. They do and we will. They also look after their beers. The Timothy Taylor Landlord slipped down as did the Semer Water from Wensleydale Brewery.Sema’ is a light, blonde, easy-drinking ale. I was concerned about the floral undertone, but it was delicate and this pale ale (ABV 4.1%) was refreshingly different.Service was slick and the atmosphere welcoming. Menus on the website were difficult to read initially, but that is a minor point which can easily be addressed this does not take away from the overall picture.Do make the effort to go as this traditional country pub with a welcoming atmosphere is a hidden gem.

We told the B&B where we were going that evening and the owner did comment the food was great but service wasn’t the best saying it’s very slow and be prepared to wait, strangely the taxi driver said the same and both asked for feedback, so here it is on tripadvisor too....The menu was extensive, some different twists on cuisine too. The portions are generous the standard was very good. The beers are good, the staff, when you manage to catch one are friendly enough too.Downside yes the service is slow BUT the food was worth waiting for - we will be going back soon as we are making another trip to the area.Only other issue I had the chair I had was like sitting on a loo seat as there was no support in the centre of the bottom.

We booked for Sunday dinner as we were on holiday in the area and had called in for a drink the day before after checking we can take our puppy in. We arrived half an early but were seated straight away. The barman took our drink order and the we waisted for 15 minutes for him to come back and take our food order. 20 minutes later our starters arrived I was wowed they looked and did taste great. That was where the wow ended we ate that then waited another 50 minutes and my husband asked how much longer our Sunday diner would be. The waitress checked and we were told they were on the way. What turned up was obviously two dinners that had been forgotten about. My husband had the rare beef which was one and half slice of very thin beef and s Yorkshire pudding I had lamb again very small portion of meat. Then the vegetables arrived pathetic portions for the cost. The bill was £47:70 for 1 & 1/2 pints cider and a glass of red wine & dinner which I total took just under 2 hours to arrive. When I mentioned we had to wait so long I was told oh yes we were busy today. No customer service. No apology

Decided to come here despite having read the recent reviews (you know some times people have different opinions and expectations) but it fitted our needs geographically and thought we would give it a bash - so we called in advance and booked. It was early on a Saturday (7.00pm) and the carpark was full so thought maybe a good sign.Firstly I have to say it is the least welcoming pub in Yorkshire - you have to flag down a waitress and ask which one of the laid up tables was ours and we were seated along with two huge menus - The bar menu on a tattered week old photocopy, and the "A La Carte" which was a reprint of the specials blackboard, but with enough engrained food on the cover to feed the table of four. The ironic thing is that the bar menu has many of the same dishes as the A La Carte Menue but about £2 cheaper. When we asked the difference we were told that there was no difference and the waitress usually puts it though at the bar menu price anyway!!The choice was overwhelming but the theme was the same thoughout .... with a cream and mushroom sauce, .... with cream and stilton ...with a touch of the 1970's.But clearly with such a busy place, I am in the minority and this is what people want nowadays.Having found a rare item without a cream or cheese sauce I was later told that this had sold out and had to re-order, so I plumped for the slow roast Belly Pork (with a sauce!) Slow roast it was not - the fat was barley rendered down and the meat tough. The sauce was tasteless and the accompanying vegetables (with cream and cheese sauces) were excessive in number and woeful in quality.I am not posting this for the owners of the establishment as I see they do not respond to the negative feedback and have a very busy pub regardless. Nor Am I tryning to fend people away, as clearly lots of people like this sort of thing - I am posting this to congratulate Trip advisor for pre-warning me. I cannot complain, as I was totaly aware of what to expect and to that point it did not disapoint, and the bric-a-brac adorning the walls, gave us plenty of conversation peices for the night. Furthermore, I have given 5* rating for value, but only based on £'s per KG.

We've eaten here before and leapt at the chance to do so again. Food-wise it was better than ever - the Sunday roasts were spot on, the pies were excellent and the starters were without exception delicious.

Met by friendly welcoming staff. Had a meal good enough to grace any fine dining restaurant without the price tag. Venison steak and scallops cooked to absolute perfection. Throughout the meal the staff were smiley and really pleasant. The owner / chef was a joy to talk too and her passion for food and good service reflects throughout all the staff.

Having called in for a drink I was looking forward to experiencing the food. Which we have now done on 3 occasions. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations.

We visited the Brownlow on Sunday for lunch, which we have many times before. The food as ever was excellent. The Brownlow is always very busy and we always arrive with the expectation that the food will be good and fresh, but we may have to wait. Not a problem for us, as a Sunday afternoon is for chilling and reading the papers...... The waiting staff are lovely, always polite even when they are obviously very busy.

We came here for Sunday lunch and it was a truly awful experience. The place is filthy, the waiters don’t know what they are doing and when we asked to speak to the manager it was clear she was too embarrassed to come out and speak to us so instead sent a message to say if we want to speak to her we would have to go and find her. Ridiculous. Highlights of the disaster were waiting 1 hour 40 mins for our food, being served a total of 10 roast potatoes, which sounds generous except unfortunately we were a table of nine people and also being sold a veggie roast that consisted of nothing more than 1 Yorkshire pudding and some stuffing. I could tell you a lot more bad things about the fiasco but the fact the place is so dirty should be enough to tell you you must not go here. It really is terrible.

I visited this pub as a family of 9 and was welcomed by dirty, screwed up menus. We waited an hour and a half for our food to be delivered to our table and was deeply disappointed with the portions we received. Ten roast potatoes between nine people isn’t acceptable alongside dry chicken and fatty lamb. Not only that, but the vegetarian meal we received was one Yorkshire pudding with stuffing on a plate costing £8.99. When asked to speak to the manager, the waiter delivered us a message saying Barbara in the kitchen wasn’t impressed with our behaviour to the waitress(who we had no issues with and was polite to). The manager refused to come out to speak to us and took £20 off the total bill. Overall our experience didn’t meet our expectations.

A name that is a tongue-in-cheek reference to an outstanding restaurant could suggest irony. However, the food here is really good! Speak to the chef, go with his recommendations and the love your meal is prepared with will ensure your delight.
