Took my son for a Sunday dinner treat at this quaint pub , on the outskirts of the village. Admittedly, third choice of venue, more local pubs were busy… this one , perhaps tellingly was not. Staff , pleasant enough- shown to our table and service quickly made. The carvery had the usual choice of 3 meats, roast potatoes & decent Yorkshire pudding- just the vegetables to help yourselves to - not a massive choice. Plates could have been warmed ( food got a bit tepid towards the end ) and also could have been cleaner - I had to swap a plate over before having my dinner served on it. Not sure about the ( presumably) member of staff stepping out the kitchen munching on a roast potato, while walking around the restaurant.. All minor details, until I paid the bill- which for 2 carvery dinners & three & a half pints of Inches cider totalled £57.55 . I didn’t think that was particularly good value, and was told I couldn’t have a receipt, so I couldn’t see the price breakdown. Shame ☹️

We met with good friends for lunch on Saturday. On the Specials board was T-bone steak with chips, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion rings & peas for £23.95. I asked for it Medium-Rare and it was cooked perfectly. The other 3 in our party also enjoyed their meals (around £14 each). The Specials Board also mentioned you could ask for a smaller Senior Citizen sized meal (but we didn't!). We were made very welcome to sit around and play cards in the Bar area after lunch. The Brown Trout is 5 minutes drive to the lovely National Trust property Scotney Castle so very handy for a stroll before or after a visit to The Brown Trout. Thank you Chef.

SMILEY CHOPS , were not on the menu the day we turned up , 4 of us turned up just after 12 , 4 staff were at the bar milling around there were about 6 other people in the pub , not one member of staff said welcome , or offered up a menu We picked up the menu and asked if we could eat outside , yes we could was the aswer no explanation on how to order . We selected our food and went inside to order food and drinks , again no exlanation on how it worked , we went outside and waited for our drinks , nothing for 5 mins so we asked , I'll check what did you order , 10 mins later we got the drinks . We then had to get our own cutlery and condiments , the food came up well 3 plates the 4th had been forgoten , another 5-8 min wait . then deserts , all was good until we asked for custard for one , another 5 min wait and 1 promt . Not one of the HAPPY TEAM came out to ask if everything was OK , if they had it my have calmed the waters and I would not be writing this , we did notice another couple walk out , as the staff came out with desert and they gone . Having said all that the food was not bad for the money , and the trout very good

Visited over the Bank Holiday weekend for a family wedding. We actually ended up going twice, once on the Friday night and then again as a larger group for Sunday Carvery lunch. Both times I was super impressed. The staff could not have been more welcoming or attentive. My brother's partner has severe allergies and these were treated seriously and menu checked to ensure no risk. The second visit we split the bill multiple ways and this was worked out and sorted even though we were large group. They offered a full Sunday Carvery or a seperate menu if that's not your bag. The Friday menu also included several specials and the home made ribs did not dissapoint (see picture). The Carvery was well portioned, the meat was not over cooked (I went pork/beef) the roasties crispy and fluffy, and the yorkies were absolutely divine. The non Carvery menu was large without being overwhelming and everyone enjoyed their choices on the Friday, they also had a fish and chips style takeaway menu... proper chip shop style chips, absolutely delicious.A lovely traditional interior, decent beer selection clearly well kept, great Covid awareness, and the staff, in particular the young gent were just incredibly friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much or too difficult. The Irish coffee was particularly yummy and definitely helped the post wedding hangover...Lovely beer patio and outside tables, clean toilets and a great vibe. I'm only sorry due to Covid I had no cash on me as I would have loved to have left a decent tip. Really sorry guys.Would 100% recommend for cheeky pints, a meal or anything in between. Great place for families, couples, friends or even a solo visit.

After trudging around Bewl Water last Sunday, on a fifteen mile Marsden March substitute, eight members of our family visited this lovely pub for some much needed sustenance! The landlord showed us to our table and took our drinks order and then gave us just the right amount of time to decide on menu choices, having pointed out the specials available too. There was a great choice of homemade food (proper, lovely homemade!) I had the steak and kidney pudding, whilst others had the turkey, leek and bacon pie or the steak and kidney pie. Each meal had a lovely amount of veg too. Great choice of desserts too, including homemade puddings and pies. Two local ales on tap, Harveys Brewery, of which I had two pints of Best, which certainly went down very well. All pprices were very reasonable indeed. We're jealous of the folks who live locally to this pub!

Dis-appointed by today's lunch package. No welcome or good bye greeting, no how was your meal. Took 5-10 minutes for drink order to be taken/arrive. If you didn't want the Roast the choices were limited. The Roast was a bit tasteless to be honest. Just came back from Somerset where we had exactly the same meal. Just as busy. Side orders of potatoes and greens. Presentation a lot better and taste knocked spots off what we had today. In its heyday family say the food quality was good. Being in hospitality myself they were under staffed and dis-organised. Would I return-No. Only spent an hour and couldn't wait to leave. Felt they just wanted your hard earned money.

It took 40 mins for a young guy to think we may need a menu but my take away was ready to collect. Staff more interested in talking to friends at the bar by the looks of things. Ironically, we are in the area in this weekend and saw their Sunday roast dinner advert and was going to book. Not only have they lost a dinner booking but a Sunday dinner too! With service as poor as this and covid-19 to deal with too at the moment, it's a wonder how busineses like this haven't shut down by now. Sorry to be cruel but if paying Dinner customers who pay more money in the the pub are not a priority then why would anyone go there to eat.

Gone to this place a few times as friends seem to like it and take me along.I have to say every time the manager is less than enthusiastic. I've had flat beer every time from draught, first time it happened I mentioned it and was served another exactly the same and when I questioned it he asked one of his regulars who obviously agreed with him that it wasn't flat and he just stared me out. Never experienced anything like it before, got an apology from the lovely bar maid but shouldn't of needed to apologise for the managers behaviour.I now just go for bottled beer whenever I'm visiting my friends and end up here.I've tried the Sunday roast they do, its alright but the roast potatoes definitely taste like they have been frozen and then reheated, very tough and dry.The two stars are for the nice atmosphere (before the manager turns up) and bar maids.

I guess the pub does as it says, but this really is ‘pub grub ‘ .... good sized portions of average food. Prawn cocktail starter fine. Garlic mushrooms odd. A very strange flavour, couldn’t quite place it.....burnt garlic or butter? Odd. The special of sea bass was not special. Plain sea bass, plain boiled potatoes, frozen peas and carrots. Very little flavour in anything. Husband had special steak and mushroom pie, which was better with fresh cabbage and tasty gravy. You also have to go back to the bar if you would like another drink. We revisited this pub having recently enjoyed their seniors' special menu which we thought represented excellent value. My main objective this time was to sample their stuffed trout although the fare is varied enough. I'd noted that the menu clearly stated "all fish dishes are served with chips" however on ordering I was politely told that this did not apply to the trout - homemade chips were extra @ £3.95! But when it was served, I think this must have been the largest rainbow trout I've ver seen plated up anywhere! It was stuffed with veg and came with an abundance of salad so the chips weren't really necessary after all. The only reason I've awarded Box 3 and not 4 is because retrettably the trout was overcooked and hence rather dry. By contrast, my wife commented that her portion of plaice was a bit on the small side. We both had good old-fashioned puds - spotted dick for me and cherry pie my wife - which did not disappoint. Only when we'd paid were we asked if everything had been to our liking - to which my wife inevitably replied "yes, it was lovely"! (?). Very much on the plus side, this pub is one of the few remaining that still serves light & bitter - nicely chilled too. Both the food and drink are sensibly and competitively priced. Recommend - especially for those visiting Scotney Castle.

I have read through several of the reviews to see if I was the only one to have a problem with poor service and obviously there are issues that should be remedied. We arrived when the Pub had just a couple of what appeared to be locals having a lunch time drink. The man behind the bar made no effort to engage so we asked if we could have a table for two. There were at least 40 tables (empty) and we were told to take any table for two. Then we waited and waited until my husband went to the bar to ask if we needed to order at the bar or was it table service. The young man asked if we had a tab! There were two people in the pub!!! He had been serving them! My husband placed our order and the unhelpful young man then asked where were we sitting! We were the only people sat in the dining room! The food arrived, large portions and tasty but my square plate had the most enormous chunk missing out of it and should not have been in service. It was my birthday and we were enjoying a trip out to visit Scotney Castle and had decided to treat ourselves to lunch instead of coffee and cake at the National Trust tearooms. What a mistake! The only time the bar staff were animated was when preparing the bill but I just could not bring myself to reward such poor service and did not leave a tip, something I have never done before. Very disappointing, marring what should have been a memorable day as I am a D Day baby!

The breaded plaice was very disappointing - the portion was small and came with chewy garden peas - I suspect they were not cooked tor order and leaving them in hot water made them chewy. This again was very subpar in taste but I ate it not wanting to send a second dish back. Big mistake as I have had a very upset stomach for the rest of the evening.

We stopped here for lunch after a visit to nearby Scotney Castle. It was a very busy Sunday and the food ordering system is a little chaotic but well worth persisting with. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was typical british pub. All finished off with a great pint of Harvey's!

Carvery can sometimes be my worst nightmare! But this is one of the best roast dinners I’ve had, all meat and veg is cooked perfectly and there’s a good choice there’s no standing in a queue as service is very quick and efficient. I’ve only had the roast dinner but I will defiantly be going back in a weekday.

Arrived about 230. Excellent service throughout from bar to restaurant. Nice beer - Summer Lightning a very palatable IPA - oand a very tasty and sensibly priced steak and kidney pudding as a main course. With proper chips and green vegetables this was a perfect lunch with prompt and friendly service. We'll be back.

We booked but had to wait about 20 minutes for our table but we had a beer so it was not really an issue. The eating area was spacious enough but very warm, all doors to the outside were closed.

I went here with with friends who live locally. A table was booked but on arrival you just have to queue at the bar. There is no separate booking in for diners just a tatty, dog-eared book on the bar.

I stopped for lunch with a friend and the two men behind the bar were friendly. The menu and the specials board were provided and we chose a lovely light lunch. We ordered at the bar and the woman that was doing the food must have been sweltering in the 34 degree temperatures, but she smiled and was very patient. Excellent value for money, freshly prepared and presentable food. I would visit again.

We returned to this pub, since we had heard that it had been refurbished, and we had a pretty indifferent meal before Christmas. However, we couldn't see any signs of improvement. We sat outside, and the glass topped table was filthy. We had to go in and ask for it to be cleaned. The outside area was uncared for, with weeds growing around the edges and generally tatty. Meal was o.k, but waiting staff were unsmiling and young lady waitress had very short ' hot pants ' on, most inappropriate. Won't be returning.

On a trip back from the coast we decided to stop for dinner with my young family, face value we thought the pub looked nice and in a lovely part of Kent. After walking in we may as well been aliens as we were treated to very rude and sarcastic bar staff one young guy and slighter older guy. Made no attempt to be friendly and basically said it was pot luck if we got our food in time as we hadn’t got long, no thank yous not even acknowledgement that we were actually there when ordering a drink on a very quiet Sunday afternoon. Food was quick and we could see why, therefore we were quick as I didn’t want to spend anymore time in what can only be described as the most unfriendly pub I have ever been too. Clearly a place for the very local people. Outsiders not welcome!

This place is fantastic if you solely want somewhere you can go to take your dog with you. I didn’t know this before going. The rooms and throughout the hotel has a strong smell if the presence of dogs. I won’t be going back but would suit dog lovers.

went to this pub with friends as remembered had a good name for food many years ago but oh dear it has gone right down hill ,as we entered i inquired about food and where we should sit and was just pointed in a direction i am not posh so off we went after we had found ourselves a menu ,no one came to take our order so we went to bar and ordered no probs ,when our dinner did come we where served by a young lad in shorts and t shirt who did not say a word ,i was eating my dinner the food was average but very salty , then my wife said have you seen the state of yours and one of our friends plates i will add a photo as this plate other plates would not be used in the roughest transport cafe let alone a restaurant ,when the lad came over we said the plates should never be used again and should go in the bin he again offered no words of apology whatsoever not once where we asked if everything was ok as i say a complete lack of interest all round what a terrible shame

Var en tur i Calverley Grounds for en gåtur og da der kom en regn byge valgte vi at gå ind i denne lille hyggelig cafe. Her er servering både inde og ude. Hyggelig typisk engelsk.

Great place to drop into if you want a quick cup of coffee (and/or snack). The service is quick and friendly and the coffee is good. You can either drink it in your vehicle or at the outdoor tables (with good views across the surrounding countryside), as long as it's not raining or cold.
