Brown Bag in Wokingham

This is a consistently brilliant experience. Sandwiches are predictably perfect, as are all coffees, milkshakes and smoothies. We come about once a week, and always bring family or friends if they are visiting. Service is quick, especially considering how busy they are. Staff work hard listen well and respond quickly. The sandwich toasting machines are near the service area, making service fast. The smell of cheese and coffee is not off putting. It is always clean, and always feels cosy and welcoming, nothing jarring. The coffee is good, and served in large cups - don't order a large unless you want a bucket sized cuppa!! Also fantastic value. Have tried the other coffee shops, but always come back to Brown Bag. Only thing to maybe improve is waiting area for take away drinks - (we never take a way - they give you a pot with a number and yr cutlery, and deliver yr milkshake or food to yr table.) In 10yrs we have never had a bad experience here, although only started coming regularly since Covid.

I popped in here yesterday, just to grab a take out coffee & to go sit in the park. I got a medium cappucino with chocolate sprinkles. The coffee itself was nice. Shame really, Everything else about my visit was off. I was only in there for minutes, less than 5 minutes but the venue & staff definitely made a lasting impression! Today was my first visit & will be my last visit to Brown Bag Wokingham. I walked in & quite honestly, I probably should have turned around & gone elsewhere. As soon as I stepped inside I was hit with an aroma which you don't expect to find in a cafe. It smelt like a charity shop upon walking in. It put me off looking for anything other than just coffee. I went to the counter to be served. I had to wait a minute or so as the two staff were talking to each other. I gave the lady my order. She said a few things back to me but I couldn't hear her. It wasn't noisy in there but she was speaking very quietly with her face directed to the counter so it was difficult to pick up what she was saying or asking. After asking her to please say that again a few times we got there. I ordered medium cappuccino to take away. She did smile a little, more at the counter than at me, but, it was something at least. She passed my order to the guy, who then instantly, didn't appear to know my order. I had to wait a minute or so we He was on his mobile phone. He pulled a cup & saucer out. He said something but, same as with the lady, I couldn't hear him. I said I wanted a take out cappucino, medium. Maybe I just don't know how it works in there? I thought it I ordered once that I wouldn't need to ask for the order again. Anyway..I digress. He asked me a few questions, all of which I could not hear so had to ask him to repeat them. Upon asking both servers to repeat what they had said of asked neither one spoke more clearly. I found myself just getting by on picking up the gist of what they were saying. I wish to say, I don't have any hearing issues. I spoke to several people yesterday & had no problems at all with hearing people, not any other communication issues. I did enjoy the coffee hut as I said, I won't be going back. Even for a brief exchange I believe it is possible to make a customer feel welcome but I didn't feel that here. And, that aroma. I don't know why it smelled of charity shop but it made me feel the place wasn't very clean.

Great coffee and range of drinks. Staff friendly, chatty, and helpful. But limited range of food for lunch, great sweet things! And they really really need to sort the toilets out! They get in a right state by mid afternoon most days! Everything else- brilliant!

Plenty of coffee shop options in town, but these guys have it nailed. Great coffee, their food is excellent but they really stand out with their customer service. Friendly staff, who work hard but always have time for a chat. Keep up the great work team.

Over the past ten years I've been an on and off visitor to the Brown Bag in Wokingham. A few years ago there wasn't much competition in Wokingham apart from Costa and Caffe Nero, now there's a lot more choice. I continue to frequent the Brown Bag because of my husband's loyalty to this local business, but I'm doubtful if I'll be able to be persuaded to go there again for some time. Historically, every time I've visited the decaff coffee was better than most and served in a decent sized, large mug, the tuna paninis were good, and there was an ok but not wide ranging selection of average tasting cakes. I've always been dismayed however by how dirty the seating areas inside were. The tables were not cleaned regularly, the chairs, in particular the sofas and lounge style chairs, looked like they were never cleaned, with dirt and crumbs on the arms and down the back of the cushions, and the floor always seemed to be dirty and crumb covered no matter how busy the place was or what day of the week it was. I also hated the fact that should you need the loo you had to leave the cafe and go to a disgusting loo underneath the car park opposite using a key provided by the Brown Bag. I hoped following a minor refurbishment a few years ago things might have improved but they didn't appear to. Since the Brown Bag has reopened following lockdown I've visited twice, once within a couple of days of it reopening and again a week or so later. The first time I noticed the lounge chairs we were sat on still had crumbs down the back of the cushions and were covered in dust along the tops of the back. This was despite having had months of being closed during which a deep clean of the place could've been done, or fair warning from the government that would've allowed them to at least get their hygiene standards up to scratch to cope with additional cleaning measures that would be required in the post CV19 age. I was pleased to note however that there is in fact a loo in the cafe itself, so why they've always insisted on sending their patrons to the horrible car park loo opposite is a mystery. The next time I visited was just after the government announced the use of face masks in all shops and takeaways. There was an 'in one door out the other' one way system in place with social distancing lines marked on the floor, and a hand sanitiser by the entrance. No mention of the requirement to wear a mask for takeaways, so no-one did, and also no re-enforcement of the requirement to provide contact tracing details for sit-in patrons - so no-one did. I also watched as two waiting staff cleared tables. Neither completely cleared them, leaving at least one item or a receipt on the table for the next customers, not bothering to clear the left over crumbs, and not even a hint of wiping the table or chairs, let alone disinfecting the tables to ensure adherence to basic hygiene requirements, and especially not Corona Virus standards. The coffee I had was still good, but the Brie panini was awful due to not being heated up properly, and the piece of Tiffin was average at best. I've seen in other restaurants and cafés I've visited post lockdown how it can and should work in this extra vigilant age we're living in, the Brown Bag fails miserably and perhaps fatally on all fronts. Makes you wonder how hygienic the areas the customers can't really see are if the shop front areas are so dirty ... Needless to say I won't be visiting again, I value my health too much to risk it.

Had the Terry's Hot Chocolate and it was SO delicious. Was very hot and the medium size was big. Great little independent cafe. Staff were friendly and the arm chairs were very comfy.

I am a regular at this coffee shop. On this occasion accidentally spilled my coffees on my way to the table and very disappointed that not only did we have to do most of the cleaning up ourselves but also had to pay for two new coffees!

A really excellent cafe. My porridge was just perfect with banana, honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon and the capucinno was just the right temperature and flavour. Staff are allways friendly and helpful. Seats are comfy. Newspapers plentiful. Easy to see why it remains so popular.

Lots of competition for coffee shops in this town but this shop is often very busy and finding a table can be a challenge. Worth the wait however; good coffee, friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere.

Regularly come in for coffee and a panini during the week and to meet up with family at weekends. Always busy from mid morning through lunch. A good cross section of age groups and certainly very popular.Notice they have a new toilet facility in the building which until recently was there only.negative.Good variety of milkshakes that are popular with the family

It's a lovely place to socialise. Very quaint. staff always remember our preferences. It's as clean as it can be considering how busy it is. The staff are nice and the drinks lovely; they accommodate to your requirements.

6 of us visited Saturday afternoon 4 adults 2 kids and we all agree our milkshakes were the best we'd tasted, fantastic

Normally have a coffee or a Milkshake as befits the weather currently, seemingly getting more and more popular so can be a problem seating if you want to eat food in, some good ideas, Coffee is great Chai Latte is also fantastic, and loved a toastie I recently had.Fast beocming my favourite coffee shop in Wokingham

Visited the Brown Bag for a cream tea. We popped in just after the lunch time rush, so finding a place to sit was easy. A good size hot scone with cream and jam and a pot of tea. Well worth the money and the scone was so tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful too.

They do some nice items, good selection of sandwiches and salads. However, it often takes way to long to get served. They don't seem to have enough staff at peak times. Also, whoevers job it is to order enough items, needs a talking to. 08.35 on the morning, and already sold out of the days ceaser salads.

Gorgeous café in Wokingham, amazing coffee and yummy food.. the spiced chai latte is the best, as are the toasties

I really enjoyed a great coffee whilst my wife had a hot chocolate with plenty of cream and marshmallows. Both very good quality and lovely personal service. It may be off the main street but search it out. Good value too !

We ALWAYS make at least one or two visits to Brown Bag when we visit our friend in Wokingham! There’s no hot chocolate more choclatey or delicious than the ones here!

I have taken to meeting a friend here once a week for a sandwich and a coffee. The place is always buzzing and the staff are friendly and efficient. The coffees are very nice but be prepared if you order a large coffee - they are huge! There are tasty sandwiches both cold and toasties on offer as well. They make an effort to clear the tables regularly so you don't have to sit amid dirty crockery.

A great combination serving good coffee and tasty homemade sandwiches. They offer a good selection including vegetarian and gluten free sandwiches. Like the cups too!

Limited choice on the cakes but the coffee is good and its a small chain. Very quiet location being a bit hidden in a small courtyard. Well worth a visit

I've only had coffee here, but there's a good variety of food both savoury and sweet. Service is friendly and efficient and the coffee is of good quality. There are tables outside which are used a lot in good weather.

Lovely coffees on offer and follow the seasonal trends very well, always place to sit down and relax in the shop too! Sandwiches a tad pricey and not quite sure about the dine in cost premiums, however always a reliable pour

We come here regularly for a snack, lunch or just a coffee. Can usually get a table and the service is fast and friendly, coffee is always good. My son is a huge fan of the hot chocolate (with chocolate shavings on top) as well as the delicious ice cream shakes.

Popped in here to warm up, Café feels a bit stuffy, could definitely do with some ventilation to stop the condensing windows. Hot chocolate was amazing. I had the crunchy one with soya milk, hit the spot. Superb and friendly staff too

We've just had lunch here as it was recommended by our son, whom we are visiting. The food choice and service was excellent. There no complaints there. However, the big letdown was the toilet. There are none in the premises, but you are given a key to unlock a "public" toilet nearby. I've no idea why you are given a key as it was already unlocked. It's difficult to describe the state of the toilet. I can think of a number of colourful adjectives. When my wife went to complain to the cafe manager, he said that they were public toilets that remained open all night. I dread to think who used them. What's the point of a key?

Been told this was a good place to go for a coffee, didn’t think it was a dog friendly place but saw someone go in with a pet dog, not an assistance dog and we had our 2 very well behaved Cockapoo’s with us so thought great! Let’s pop in for coffee, only to be told abruptly upon entering that we would have to sit outside with our dogs! I pointed out the other dog sat with its owner, inside, and the waitress still refused to let us stay inside! We didn’t stay and wont go back! We did, however go to Oslar’s for our coffee, they knocked spots off the Brown Bag with their warm welcome and amazing coffee ;)

A chain of local cafe's that have coffee, cakes, sandwiches etc. and they are a break from the larger chains. Friendly good service; all you want from a coffee shop.

Came back here today for a quick lunch whilst shopping in Wokingham. Not been here for a while but food and service still good. Has had a small makeover and now had more tables so easier to find a seat but still busy with good atmosphere. Our first choice when in Wokingham.

Great ambience in a well located part of the town centre. Very good selection of teas and coffees and delicious freshly made snacks.

The quality of very freshly prepared lunch food was superb in a shop out of the wind and looking onto a pleasant peopled courtyard in Wokingham.

Excellent menu choice for coffee, light lunch breakfast. Staff pleasant and attentive. Only downside is having to get a key to use a toilet across the street. This wasn't in a particularly nice street! Quite run down.

Yo soy exigente acerca de mi y este lugar es cuppacino recibe derecho cada vez. Mi esposa y yo hemos probado varios lugares en Wokingham para comer y este es el mejor. La sopa de pollo tailandés es divino, pero me gustaría que fuera un poco más gruesos.

He visitado muchas veces bolsa marrón y siempre disfrutan de la comida y bebida que tienen allí. El chocolate caliente son los mejores chocolates calientes que he probado y sus batidos son deliciosos! Tienen una buena selección de sandwiches, y tartas de panini.

By far, my favourite is porridge with banana and honey. You can even get this as takeaway. The staff are fantastic and go out of their way to make your visit a great experience. I keep going back again and again!

A regular visitor to this coffee shop, amazing cake and sandwich selection and the hot chocolates are out of this world! So delicious! Meet friends here every week, often very busy but have always been able to get a seat (midweek)

Love love love the hot chocolate and milkshakes here. Don't want to think about the calories but they are made with a bar of chocolate. Definitely recommend the mint aero one. They also serve nice cakes.

My partner and I have lived in Wokingham for about a year now.. and every Sunday we walk past the Brown Bag on our way to Costa, and always wondered why it was so busy in there but never tried it (creatures of habit!) until last weekend. Costa was packed, and so decided to give it ago and my gosh we were not let down. The exterior really has nothing special about it (but never judge a book by it's cover), inside is lovely, very rustic and quite boho. Service was very friendly, didn't rush us while we made our choices and with a smile. A ton of choice from sandwiches to drinks to muffins, all a great price and looked delicious! The hot drinks come in lovely rustic mugs, and my partner said his breakfast sandwich was fresh and much better than any panini from a standard chain coffee shop. Overall, absolutely love this place and will continue going here for our Sunday lazy day coffee! FAB!!

I love coming to Brown Bag, whether it's for breakfast porridge, a tea or one of their luxury hot chocolates all the food and drinks here are delicious and fantastic value for money. It's usually quite busy but I think that's down to its popularity, and the staff are very good at coping with the demand. I highly recommend their hot chocolates I have probably now sampled the whole menu and the mini aero is my favourite. I am also really enjoying their Christmas Menu they have a very good Gingerbread Latte.

Good coffee and smoothies, it's a little bit pricey, but worth it :). Comfy sofas and chairs to relax and chill out :)

A quick bite before Oxfam, a choice between either Sausage bap or ham and cheese toastie. Don't forget the Prawn crisps, make sure to shake the bag.

My wife and I would frequent the Brown Bag some mornings. The staff are really friendly. The milk shakes are great and the toast with marmite is awesome.Not overly priced and you can chat, read and/or relax with family and friends.Go there often enough and they will know your order by heart.

Quality never drops reunion with family on a chilly morning. Nothing likeca sausage bap washed down by a great flat white. Always busy as they were today but fast efficent and friendly staff.

Uk coffee houses most times struggle to replicate the flat white but this place is not one of them. Early Sunday morning visit but already busy a testament to what they are doing

Coffee was nice enough but we found it a bit noisy - there were two 'niggly' toddlers next to us which was unfortunate for us, though obviously not a permanent feature, but the clattering and banging from the coffee making area were intrusive. I would say that it was better than 'average', though not 'very good', but there is no other option in the rating section.

I cannot fault the quality of the coffee or the food that is served here. I have been numerous times and the high quality is consistent as is the excellent service. This is evidenced by its obvious popularity.

Stumbled upon this place after a visit to the Carnival pool. Will definitely visit again! My coffee and coconut cake were delicious!! Helpful friendly staff. As it was a hot day they added more tables and chairs to the outside area for customers to enjoy the weather.

We are regular visitors to the Brown Bag. Smoothies are fabulous and always feel comfortable - no pressure to leave from staff :)

Have been to the brown bag in Wokingham and socket many times for coffee and cake the staff are very pleasant and it is a homely comfortable venue somehow there is warmth to the atmosphere my husband and always choose this as our favourite place to have a warm drink when waiting for our dog being groomed

UK has really come aboard with the Flat White coffee that I am used to back home in NZ. Had a fantastic one last week there.

Having recently moved to the area I am keen to try out the local cafe's, bars and restaurants. Glad I tried Brown Bag, coffee was lovely and, even though they were busy, the service was great and very friendly. Highly recommended.

The best hot chocolate in town! It's a great place to "work from home" and the staff are really friendly! I'd recommend this coffee shop to anyone!

Always busy, always good coffee, always friendly staff.Wokingham is fortunate to have several good independent coffee houses that you should never have to feel the need to go into the national brands. We had a nice Sunday morning chill with several coffees nothing better.

On the spur visit to Brown Bag. My order was fine but my husbands was awful. Soup warned in a microwave without a stir during the heating. Therefore hot soup on the outside cold in the middle. Very bitter over strong filter coffee. My pot of tea and toastie were fine if my toastie was not served to me as if I was something scraped of the servers shoe. Perhaps we should give Brown Bag a miss in future

I love this coffee shop. Good selection of sandwiches/salads/toasties all delicious. Plus very nice cake!A little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. It's good quality and the service is quick and with a smile.Only downside is there is a slight step up to both doors and they don't stay open which makes getting in with my double pushchair a little difficult on my own. But it's worth the struggle. Definitely recommend for lunch or just tea/coffee and cake!

I'm such a regular they have my drink prepared before I've even got to the till! I love this coffee shop. The coffee is fab (and I'm fussy). I'm a little bored with menu choice as in so often but that's the worst thing I can say.It's also a great place to meet friends. Love it!

Visited today on my daughters recommendations had a peanut butter and banana milkshake. Wow it was amazing!!! Great atmosphere in the cafe. A real buzz of a place. The staff were very good and friendly.Didn't think it was over priced either given the size and quality of the drink.Will definitely be back for more...

I have breakfast in here at least once a week and have done so for many years. Not only is the food and drink top class, so are the staff. The customers are pretty good too! The place is very comfortable and the service is excellent. I can recommend the porridge, toasted tea cakes and the toast.

This is a well established cafe at the 'bottom' end of Wokingham near the Gig House pub. There is a good variety of sandwiches, filled baguettes, wraps and soups. Or, if you just fancy a coffee and maybe a cake, it's also ideal.Really a cut above the chain cafes this is is a great lunchtime venue, or worth dropping in while your in town doing the shopping

This isn't just the best coffee shop in Wokingham, it's the best one period! Try their cafe creme brûlée coffee!!! Great food and lovely staff, what more do you need!

I have been a regular here and at their Woodley shop for a couple of years, both stores make excellent coffee, quality tea, and cold drinks. The sandwiches, while pre packed are freshly made on the premises, and they have some delicious cakes. The staff are friendly and helpful. It very popular so you may find yourself having to queue as it gets very busy during peak times but it is worth it and you won't get better value for money at any other coffee shop.

Lovely staff, fresh pastries and cakes, and definitely the best coffee in Wokingham. Very child friendly but also good for a quiet escape!

You know those t-shirts they wear in Caffè Nero which say: 'The best coffee this side of Milan'? It's all lies, because Brown Bag serve the best coffee anywhere outside of Italy.

The coffee is good, the staff make an effort to say hello and the snacks are nice too. It can get a bit busy at peak times, but that is just because a lot of people like it. Serves normal coffee shop paninis and sandwiches, cakes and toast in the morning. They do have a few healthy options that you don't get anywhere else with a range of gluten free sweet snacks. Dairy free options are limited in the sandwich department, but that's the same for most coffee shops.

Tucked away just off Denmark Street at a through route to Elms Field, the Brown Bag is a popular place for lunch. This brings its own problems because it is often very busy and the interior feels a little cramped. It is also one of those places where groups will grab tables whilst others queue so not brilliant for the individual whose coffee may go cold waiting for a table. In an ideal world it would be allowed to spread further outside which would add to the atmosphere of this less than inspiring part of an otherwise charming town. However, the coffees and snacks are really rather good and it is worth the visit and the queue.

I was passing through Wokingham and decided to have a coffee at the Brown Bag. The staff are friendly and welcoming plus they serve really good coffee, pastries, sandwiches and soft drinks.

This is a regular afternoon treat for my husband and 4 year old - it does the best babycino in Wokingham and tiffin is great too. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, papers and good choice of food and drinks.

this coffeehouse was recommended by my partner - and I would recommend too it is reasonably large with selection of sofas and tables + chairs plenty of space for prams / buggies etc.staff were lovely and served a great coffee to specification - good selection of cakes and the chocolate brownie was excellent

I hadn't been here for a couple of years but agreed to meet a colleague for a coffee. Have to say I was very impressed, very good cappucino and the coronation chicken wrap was also really good. Nice decor inside and, as it was a warm day, we sat outside which was good. Not many coffee shops in Wokingham where you can do that. I will visit again

Love Brown Bag, consistently good coffee, tasty treats and sandwiches. Nice atmosphere. Only down side is that when visiting with my dog the tables outside aren't very sheltered.

My son and I went into this cafe recently on a cold rainy morning to escape the elements and found a gem of a place. The welcome was very warm and the coffee, tea cakes and bacon rolls were excellent. Everything tasted so fresh and the service was great too. Certainly beats all the other coffee shops in town by some way. Would highly recommend it, no matter how discerning your taste.

As an Italian i am fussy about my coffee. I've tried all the coffee shops in Wokingham and this place has the best, smoothest coffee in town. Their hot chocolates are also the best. Nice atmosphere, nice staff. Great to sit outside in summer.

Came here to get out of the rain and glad we did. I had a lovely and tasty mochachinno. The milkshakes of my friends (I got a taste) were super and there was a massive choice of them. Was a great coffee and shake experience so thanks to all at brown bag :).

The coffee is very good and the cakes are the best in town. The only disappointment is the sandwiches/paninis which are in packets rather than made to order although they will toast them for you.
