I have passed by year after year and never stopped, mainly because this place is only open Monday to Friday and not at the weekends. I would have thought they would be best opening Wednesday - Sunday, but then what do I know? Anyway, today I was looking at the local church and the stained glass windows and Brompton Forge seemed the obvious place to have lunch. I was quite surprised to find the car park almost full and as I entered the Forge people seemed to be everywhere looking quite relaxed. In, through the conservatory, with very squashy sofas beckoning with newspapers and magazines there for the reading. The sun made the whole place look very inviting. I went further, past the service area into a formal dining room space and sat down at a small table with leather chairs. I thought the restaurant area needed an overhaul. I took an immediate dislike to the tables which looked like they had been there for a very long time, but didn't have any antique appeal whatsoever. I also didn't like the way the old historical buildings had been opened out and transformed. The rounded stone archway being the most unattractive feature of all. Don't worry though Brompton Forge because I re-design a place like this within minutes of sipping the tea and nowhere comes up to my expectations. Really this place has a certain elegance which is just a little tired. The menu gave a lot of options although I would rather have been here before 1130 for breakfast having read so many Tripadvisor comments about it. Nevertheless I settled on a sandwich and a pot of tea, because I didn't want to eat a full meal. The tea arrived long before the sandwich and the waitress was friendly, intelligent and smiley. The sandwich was quality: a fresh granary roll with extremely good Yorkshire ham and english mustard. This was accompanied by a salad garnish, nicely dressed and including rocket, other leaves, cucumber and tomato. There was the addition of lattice crisps. This I concluded was a good sandwich and looking again at the menu I have promised myself that I will return, firstly to sample that English breakfast and then to go for the fish and handcut chips that I saw on another table and felt immediately envious. So, Brompton Lodge; I conclude - the food is quite excellent, I only spoke to one member of staff so it's difficult to comment further than I have, the cost was acceptable and I will definitely return.

this place looks very nice from the outside but whilst it's picturesque the inside isn't as exciting it's very plain and uninviting the menu is limited with a couple of specials. The staff aren't exactly gushing but efficient the order was simple enough but arrived in 2 stages the sausage and mash had been eaten by the time the peas arrived and the Panini had gone when the chips came the food was very good and the homemade chips were amongst the best I've ever tasted. Finished off with a piece of reasonable fruit cake and coffee. The food was good the service ok atmosphere non existent the few customers were very very senior citizens which would suggest this is the market catered for.there was some dust and the odd spiders web 1 complete with a trapped daddy long legs OK as a one of visit but wouldn't rush back

Have visited on numerous occasions and have felt recently something has happened here . A wonderful spot a nice building but that is about it now. I have never met such miserable staff and certainly need to be trained in customer service . We stood around in a practically empty t room and was totally ignored. Eventually we sat at a table and waited and waited and waited . The waitress proceeded to ignore us so I decided I better get up and order at the till . I really should have walked out because the coffee was ok but the cake was very dry . Would I return ? I certainly would not and I won't be recommend. Carry on to thornton dale if heading for pickering or stop at wykeham if heading towards scarbourgh.

Have been meaning to try the cafe for sometime and today was the day. The welcome was virtually none existent. We were pointed to the menu as the source of all information. We ordered one coffee , one tea, one scone with jam and butter and one piece of fruit cake with cheese. The jam turned out to be raspberry, request for some strawberry jam was greeted like Oliver Twist" we only have raspberry don't and won't have anything else except our homemade raspberry ". There was no offer of hot water with the tea , no cream for the scone. The cheese available for the fruit cake was a slice of processed cheddar, better than nothing, just. The atmosphere was unwelcoming and unfriendly we were pleased to leave and will not be returning. Cost of the above experience £ 10+

After an afternoon walk we called in at the Brompton forge, finding a table we ordered a cup of tea each and a caramel shortcake and Scone. The tea was good and the shortcake was good too. The scone was slightly crumbly, unfortunately leaving more on the plate than could be eaten. The only downside is seeing other dinners receiving waitress service and this not being offered to us. But only a slight downside.

We went for lunch and had reviewed the website menu as we don t eat red meat and like to check there is a decent choice. We had planned more restaurant for the venue but on a Tues you are it seems limited - so we chose the forge. Good coffee and tea ... Decent homemade cakes but a tad disappointing on the limited meal lunch choice . 2 of us settled for excellent home made quiche several flavours and pastry crisp and excellent. Home made chips were good too. The Cajun salmon was flavoursome I m told but salad only meant an extra portion of chips had to be ordered which at 9.50 was an ok but not over generous portion. New potatoes or an offer to be flexible we're not forthcoming If passing fine - best for sandwich or cake offering and service really could have been more accommodating and I think I ve read this before. returning guests seemed to be effusively welcomed and spoken to, but that does nt encourage new potential returners to do just that . They feel slightly less loved and less likely to drop in to get into the club. Not overwhelmed

Although living in the area for some years we have only just happened upon the Forge. We have since been back for breakfast (the sausages from the 'real' butchers round the corner in the village) are scrummy and for tea with proper home made cakes. A delight for the tastebuds and a disaster for the waistline! Service is very much with a smile and the actual place is nice to sit - either at table or more informally in the armchairs. We have added the Forge to our list of places to go when I'm feeling to lazy to cook.

If you advertise your opening hours as 10am until 4 pm , if someone walks in at 3.25 pm for a bowl of soup and a drink , you should not say "I've turned every thing off in the kitchen so I can't make you a drink " because roughly translated that actually means " I can't be bothered, please go away ". So that's what we did , we left .All the wonderful coffee or award winning hot chocolate is worth nothing if you can't be bothered to serve people . We were in catering for over 40 years and if we had taken the attitude of the young woman in the kitchen at Brompton Forge , we wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes - if you don't want trade after 3.25 pm , don't advertise your hours as open until 4pm because that's just dishonest - won't be going back again and will never recommend .

With a warm welcome (helped with a glass of champaign) myself, partner and parents enjoyed a wonderful evening of absolutely delicious food. I cannot fault the 5 course meal we received which was perfectly presented, piping hot and arrived with a smile from the two gentlemen waiters. With a great selection of wines to wash the meal down the atmosphere spoke for itself as to how much all the other guests were enjoying themselves. Very much looking forward to visiting the tea rooms one afternoon to try what the day menu has to offer. With food tasting that good there is no ground to comment on if it is value for money or not. 5 star chef I say!

We have visited the Brompton Forge over a number of years, first when it was purely a restaurant, and more recently since it became a tea room.Last week we went for lunch, which was very enjoyable. It does fall down somewhat in that the main courses are limited. There was a very good atmosphere to the place and the service was friendly and efficient.Today we decided to try out their breakfast menu. Again the food was fine - I enjoyed the full Yorkshire breakfast. However the place was empty apart from ourselves and we got the impression that they were surprised to see us there. It was a cold gloomy day outside and felt much the same inside. In the future we will restrict ourselves to lunchtime, although that will be fairly infrequently in view of the limited choice of main dishes.

I've visited the Brompton Forge a few times since its tranformation from restaurant to tea rooms and have been happy with the offering on each occasion. The food is good, the service is adequate and, though not cheap, I think it provides reasonable value for money. As regards ambience/surroundings it's definitely the best in the area - more like a classy restaurant (which is what it used to be) than a tea rooms. The menu is quite limited so it's possible to get a little bored with the choices when you've visited a few times. My advice to the proprietor would be to offer more daily specials to keep regular customers interested.Definitely one to visit when you're in the area.

the Brompton Forge was once a much loved, successful restaurant booked up for months in advance. It has now become "tea rooms" and has only its previous reputation going for it now. We had bookd for afternoon tea and arrived to find ourselves totally ignored nby a grumpy looking waitress clearing tables, after standing around like a couple fo lemons for a few minutes,we sat down at one of the several empty tables. Grumpy finally came over to us and thrust a menu at us. Not once did we receive any greeting or eye contact. Grumpy intoned the sandwich fillings and hovered over us while we made our choice. It might have been nice to have given us a few minutes to make our choice bearing in mind the place was deserted with the exception of a couple who had obvioulsy been abandoned by Grumpy outside and who kept looking around anxiously for something resembling service - alas they were not to receive this and were eventually forced to come inside in search of Grumpy and the bill. The food when it arrived was delicious and home made. We were not offered any top ups of of tea or hot water despite being charged £9.00 per head for a couple of sandwiches, a scone and a piece of cake. We knew that we would probably be wishing each other a Merry Xmas by the time Grumpy got round to clearing our table and presenting us with the bill so we decided to go self service and I finally tracked her down gossiping round the till with an equally looking grumpy colleague - I paid the bill (minus tip) mean I know but tips have to be earned I'm afraid and I was not prepared to spend one single penny more on this dreadful experience. There are ample tea rooms in this area - don't wastet your time or money on this place.
