British Raj Express in North Hertfordshire

We have had a takeaway/delivery a few times. The service is excellent and the food is the best Indian takeaway we have had.

Myself and some of my colleagues from the train station ( which is opposite here )ordered from here this evening , I’ve ordered many times before but one of us hasn’t but Is now a big fan too 😀. Tried a new dish ( to me ) tonight chicken tikka pathia and it was awesome just the right amount of spice and generous portions at a good price , the rice and nan was top notch too. The owner even popped over later that night to check we all enjoyed it . Highly recommended .

EXCELLENT and AUTHENTIC food OPPOSITE STATION. Since working in Cambridge I've been picking up my dinner from here at least twice a week as it's opposite Royston railway which is very convenient if you need a quick dinner grab on your way home. 10/10

Fantastic takeaway tonight for a small celebratory meal. We had a selection of mains, veg side dishes, rices and naans and it was all delicious and cooked to perfection. Highly recommended. Very fast if you can collect. Would especially recommend the Jalfrezi and the Biryani. One person in the party with dietary needs really appreciated the diary free royal korma.

Take orders they “don’t receive” and then steal your money. 40 days waiting for a half hour call back. Avoid. Food wasn’t even that good. Waited ages for food after they said to arrive after 20 minutes. Waited another 20 minutes after that. Problems every time I’ve been there.

First and last time using this place. Man at counter was rude and surly. Keep waiting for 25 minutes as a walk in. Order the garlic lamb which, any where else is a dry dish and a garlic nan. Got this! Only good thing was the plastic fork.

Simply divine. I've tried most of the Indian restaurants around the area and this one tops them all. I've never had an issue with the food. Good portion sizes too.

Absoulety top notch chicken Madras tonight very tasty good portion size. And highly recommend the new nan bread ( cheese and garlic ) .

My very first Indian Curry back in the 80's was at the original British Raj that was located in the high street in Royston. This was a terrific curry house in its day, but sadly closed. I have wondered for some time how the British Raj Express would compare to the original and with my regular curry house closed early for the evening I had the chance to find out. Well ... I was not disappointed ... there were still some familiar faces behind the counter and the food was simply terrific and actually reminded me of the taste of the original!! Well done guys ...keep up the good work.

My family and me picked up a takeaway tonight on our way back home from Baldock at the British Raj in Royston. It was recommended on the Cambridge Curry Community and so wanted to give it a try when passing. I always try to give a fair and balanced review. I would definitely recommend the British Raj. The kids korma was outstanding, consistency and flavour amongst best I have tasted but personally I like heat! Unfortunately the Ceylon lacked a little in heat and for me needed more sour. The Patia was also a little oily, but otherwise very tasty with good heat. The oil though didn’t detract. The meat which was chicken in all dishes was superb and tender. The rice was the best I ever ate, the special rice was a real highlight for me. Incredible flavours and very light. The naan breads were tasty but a bit heavy, I would prefer them lighter and crispier. All in all I would return though and would certainly recommend this to others. The food was a solid 7.5 out of 10 for me. Some parts were a 9, but I have reviewed it as a whole. Really recommend though. For me it was consistent with the other restaurants I have tried in Royston. Bonus marks for the staff who were very friendly and I found out they can deliver to us which is great news! Prices were also very reasonable.

I am vegan and I was overwhelmed with their amazing huge vegan selection! They also do other dishes vegan on request, plus side dishes and everything is so clearly labelled! The guy who answered the phone was really well informed and it arrived promptly AND WAS DELICIOUS!!! Never going back to another Indian restaurant!

Popped back (last in about a month ago) and had another amazing meal from the British Raj Express. Warm welcome. I had Lamb Karai and plain naan. The dish was aromatic and the lamb just melted in my mouth. I took some pictures and let the family know where I was and they asked me to bring some back ;-) I have eaten at their restaurants for about 35 years. I have known the family well for a little under 25 years and their food has been used as a yard stick around the world. A few come close but never beaten. They are very progressive in their outlook. The British Raj Express is multi award winning. I look forward to visiting again soon and also trying their sister Restaurant The Guard House - Thai Restaurant and Takeaway. I will be back soon well worth the round trip!

Exceptional as always. Safwaan, Siraj and team have done them selves proud. Popped in to catch up with some old friends and were treated to an amazing feast. Chicken tikka jalfrezi, chicken tikka and chicken tikka biryani a selection of naan breads and the best onion veggies we've ever tasted. We will be back again next time we are in the area my eldest says once he's past his driving test he will make a trip personally. Thanks again see you soon.

We visit Royston from the US and Canada quite a lot, and the food here is exceptional and the service top shelf!!

Cracking chicken madras just the right amount of spice and very generous portions. rice and nan cooked perfectly too and made for a very tasty meal . lovely freindly owner and staff . Highly recommend.

Lovely takeaway 🥘 5* ---------------- 31-05-22 Ordered another takeaway from here last night. Order placed at 19:50 and it turned up at 22:05. An absolute joke on a weekday. After calling up and chasing it was told it's on its way twice. Guess it was but via the whole town as it turned up cold and a well done nan-bread. I spoke too soon with my original post. Sorry guys, bad review now from me. 2*

Another great curry from the British Raj. I tried the Chicken Rezala last night for the first time and it was delicious. Highly recommended. Quite hot and spicy without being overpowering. Really nicely done.

One of the staff members here came into my partners place of work and spoke to her in an absolutely disgusting manner. We were weekly customers here, but now we will be taking our custom elsewhere, and would politely advise anyone else to do the same.

Had a great meal, very tasty and cooked to high standards. Good service, friendly staff, Definitely recommend.

Honestly the worse customer service i have ever seen. We ordered around 6 o’clock come just after 8 o’clock, are order was wrong asked for my money back as was not happy waiting 2 hours and order was wrong. He said no your not getting your money back and hang up the phone.

Ordered a delivery from here for the first time over a weekend and it did not disappoint. Some of the local takeaways can be hit and miss on a weekend, due to how busy they can be, but the food from this place was really fresh and tasty. Even the salad was fresh and did not look sorry for itself, which we have received in that state in the past from other takeaways...I sometimes wonder why they bother! Anyway, all dishes tasted good and the rice was flavourful too. We will order from here again for sure!

We used the British Raj's takeaway service. Food came exactly when promised, was very hot (we live a few miles from Royston) and tasted delicious. Prices seem very competitive too. Recommended.

10/10 amazing food and amazing staff!! The food came fast, hot and we even got 2 free popadoms :) so pleased with our order, definitely the best in royston, perfection.

Ordered twice from this curry house, first time the food arrive slightly later then stated and cold. Second time of ordering, food was 3 hours late, tried ringing the shop well over 50 times with no reply. Was also fobbed off with a £3 refund. Never ordering from here again.

We have eaten from here a couple of times now. The quality of the curry is excellent. This time I opted for a lamb jalfreizi. It was refreshing to find a lamb curry with good quality cuts of meat and plenty of it. Not too oily or greasy either. I was however disappointed that when I came to collect the order none of the staff were wearing any PPE whatsoever. There was not a face mask or visor in sight both at the front desk or in the kitchen. Unfortunately despite the amazing curry this would make me think twice about ordering from here again. I would have given the experience five stars if it wasn't for this.

Brilliant food and great service

It was my first time trying Indian in a long time so I wasn’t sure but I opted for British Raj. The delivery was on time and food was hot and delicious! Must go for those who have dietary requirements such as Vegan. Will be ordering again soon.

Our delivery order arrived on time, but the food was less than average. So disappointed after reading their reviews. Also on ordering, the restaurant said I could pay by card or cash, so I opted for cash. I only had notes and expected the driver to have change (as this is the case with other takeaways in my experience). The driver said he did not carry change and I ended up paying extra for the food. I telephoned the restaurant and they said they will try to drop the change back, this hasn't happened, or they would give money off next time. Unfortunately there won't be a next time as the food fell short. I thought this was a real liberty. Beware.

Biryani was greasy. Son wasted most of it. Onion bhajee very small no taste. Masala watery. I keep to Ashinia far better and same price.

We use the British Raj express regularly and have always had excellent and friendly service. Deliveries arrive on time as promised. The menu contains a lovely variety of meals always delicious and menu items can be amended if required. I would always use and recommend The Bristish Raj express. During the 'lockdown' these guys have been local heros supplying food to essential workers. Royston heros!

We have ordered a takeaway for delivery every week during lockdown. The food is consistently good. We always order early (5ish) and it has always been delivered within the hour. I know this is too early for some people but they have been so busy (a good thing surely) that I think the later you order, the longer you would have to wait. Reading earlier reviews, why order through a 3rd party when you can phone direct? They take payment over the phone and I believe they now accept cash from regulars but you’d need to check that. Always polite and helpful on the phone too.

The food is really nice, and I appreciate that it’s been open despite the current pandemic! Staff are very kind and are willing to compromise if an error has occurred!!! Always come here and will continue to :)

Consistently delicious food from a talented and conscientious team. But more than that, these guys are pillars of the local community. During lockdown they have offered hundreds of FREE meals to local NHS staff. They source from and promote other local businesses. They engage with local schools and local community events. With first class food as standard, this is exactly the kind of business we should all be supporting. My tip - always call direct when you want to order (rather than use just eat or similar) they can give you a realistic delivery time estimate. They are incredibly popular and at busy times there can be a wait, but they’ll always let you know if you speak to them first before ordering, and my estimated delivery times have always been accurate.

Safwaan and his team run the most incredible Indian takeaway for miles. The food is always incredible and they always have time to make personal recommendations on new and interesting dishes. Safwaan is an absolute pillar in the Royston community and has worked tirelessly to produce and deliver top notch cuisine to a wildly enlarged customer base. I expect it has been very difficult to keep up with the spike in demand over these last few weeks and so, hardly surprising that there have been a few minor delivery delays (looking at previous reviews). The quality of food from this place is second to none and I highly recommend trying the Naga curry, if you like it hot! Thanks for all that you and your team do.

Total disappointment, the food was 30 minutes late not as bad as others but still not acceptable, the food smelled good but that is where it fell apart, the curry was mostly rice the curry was quite grainy, not enjoyable and if u order a mild curry you shouldn’t expect it to blow your head off, the portion of chips was pathetic hardly enough to feed one person, the sides were good but that is it. I would leave 0 stars if it was possible, I expected better than this.

Our food took over 2 hours to arrive, we ordered at 7.40 and food arrived just before 10. There were gristly bits of chicken, the naan was awful, very poor quality compared to what we have had in the past. I phoned 3 times over the 2 hours, on the last call they promised a credit to my justeat account and this never happened. We will never order from here again.

We had a meal here a month ago and it was brilliant

This place has gone down hill rapidly! Our order was 2 hours late Saturday evening. Both phone lines turned off so unable to chase up its whereabouts. Delivery driver explained it had got back logged because they took too many orders, so the boss turn off the phone lines. I voiced my opinion “this isn’t good enough”. The delivery driver turn got quite annoyed and rude... the cheek of it. Our neighbours also ordered and their food never arrived. We placed our order at 5pm for an 8pm delivery... it arrived at 10pm... AVOID! The food was awful too, cold and under seasoned. Such a shame this place used to be excellent.

Ordered via just eat last night and was stated a 8:15pm delivery, got to 9:15pm and I started to call, phone obviously taken off the hook as constantly engaged even after 35 attempts, Facebook messaged and no reply. 10:30pm contacted just eat who refunded my money, would have been nice to have contact by the restaurant to say they were either running late or wouldn’t be able to fulfill my order. Also no reply to date to the Facebook private message that I sent. Very disappointed and a very hungry family to find food for at 10:30pm !

Had them deliver 2 times in last 2 weeks and I must say your spot on and food is very very very good, there not charging delivery at moment with the covid -19 but even after this I will have them to deliver couldn’t fault anything, so a very well done guys and amazing food

Absolutely disgraceful Lamb Madras, 5 pieces of Lamb and each one the size of a sugar cube, I love my Curry and this was dreadful, I would seriously avoid this place for Lamb Madras, yes it's Chicken but the Waitrose Andhra is hot, huge pieces and beautiful, this cost £6.95 and the Waitrose curry is £3.99 and far nicer.Last time we spend money there as a family.

Total. Joke. 60.00 order 3 hours. Nothing. Not even a phone call. If you can’t cope then don’t take the orders. Never again. Cancel this order as going to bed now. Refund expected instantly.

We ordered a takeaway, firstly it was over half an hour late despite numerous calls to the restaurant and then when they arrived it was missing a whole meal. Then they disputed that we would have to pay £6 for the delivery even being over half hour late and someone not getting their dinner. Never ordering from them again

Left a bad review earlier in the year on JustEat after two disappointing take away’s & knew Safwaan Choudhury would make improvements. We had a takeaway last night and it was excellent food ,service is always impeccable. I would recommend British Raj express as the Best takeaway in town!

After seeing the reviews thought we would give it a go. Very disappointing, I had chicken korma and a plain naan - there was 6 pieces of chewy over cooked chicken in a very sugary sweet sauce and the plain naan was tasteless and soggy, I couldn't eat it. My husband said the keema naan was ok and chicken madras sauce was good but again 6 pieces of chewy chicken. All for £23 including delivery. Thumbs down from us.

I ordered a takeaway. The chips were undercooked almost raw! The butter chicken was curdled. I ordered an omelette for my grandma as she doesn’t like spicy food it was the worst looking omelette I’ve ever seen in my life! Plus it was inedible as full of spices. First and last meal I will order from here! Only gave 1 star as zero is not an option!

By far the best Indian ever. We’ve been going to the British Raj Express since it opened and have never had a bad meal. The owner safwaan is a really lovely guy and is always keen to please his customers. The staff are friendly, caring and show real passion for their food.

I've ordered from here on a few occasions now after hearing who the new owner was. His reputation is exemplary for delivering top quality food at the most competitive price. This takeaway is the best in Royston and surrounding areas in my opinion, and the service is super friendly and very welcoming. I would go as far as saying that it beats many,if not all of the curry mile restaurants in Birmingham too! I have never been disappointed and will continue to order the most tasty flavoursome Indian food from Safwaan and his crew.

fast and flavour on what we ordered. But your tikka is too sweet. Was chunks of coconut in it!!!!! What the !!!!. Thats not tikka. Few other issues to do with basic ingreds on other dishes.. but good fast food. Over priced forwhat you get. Still cannot get the coconut out my teeth.. or the taste on that. Just why. 3 *

We was staying in the area and was looking forward to a take away, we order food all fine then het a phone call saying they was lost and need help to find the place, then finally got here to find they forgot some of our order, then sat down to eat and the only thing that was nice was the onion baggee!!! Lucky we don't live here wasn't impressed at all and paid £35 for it, when at home it would have cost bout £23 and a lot nicer.

Not too sure about the certification of halaal meat, but they provide an assortment of vegetarian alternatives cooked to perfection and very tasty. Staff are also very helpful, friendly and compliant. Would definitely dine here again.

Mum and dad used to go to the restaurant a long time ago when they had one. Now they have a take away me and my partner not really had much Indian takeaways. But this has to be the best one in Royston saf is so lovely makes you feel welcome helps you with your order. Didn’t have to wait long for food so friendly. Food is just out of this world great value for money we will be coming here a lot more. Thank you saf and family

Me and my wife wanted a takeaway,phoned through to be greeted by people half way through numerous different conversations and extremely abrupt on the phone, when I started placing my order I was told that I had to give my main dish first (I started with my rice order) when questioned why this was I was greeted by an excuse to do with the chef and that he needed that first, when I said that I'm pretty sure that I doesn't really matter what order it goes I was confronted with a rude and very argumentative man who kept trying to talk over me, this service was atrocious and I'm sure if I didn't hang up the phone then he would still be arguing the toss about it now. We have taken our business elsewhere and will no longer use this place under any circumstances and will strongly advise anyone to use one of there competitors in town

Had takeaway many times from here, various dishes not just "old faithful". Always been superb. Food hot and tasty, not dripping in oil as some takeaways are. Not expensive either. Genuinely recommend you try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
