British Chippy in Sefton

Don’t like to write a negative review as previous visits have been ok. However tonight I found I had to wait a bit longer than usual, the girl didn’t seem to know what she was doing (lost a clients order). When I got home and tasted the fish and chips plus mushy peas ,the peas are not cooked and tasted watery,the chips were soft and mushy. Very disappointed with the quality.

Beautiful fish and chips - haddock & chips cooked to order, with extra batter to protect the fish. Delicious crispy batter, plump, sumptuous chips. A lovely treat & thoughtfully wrapped in a cardboard box & paper bag to keep warm. Clean & welcoming. Thank You Andrico & Team.

I have used this Takeaway a few times before. I’ve always ordered the same meal, cod and chips. The time before this last order, it wasn’t very good, but it wasn’t very bad. Which is a shame because previously I would’ve said it was good. This time the dialed shifted and it was clearly into bad. The chips weren’t cooked very well and the fish was tiny. I sent them a message on Facebook to explain I was disappointed with the size of the fish. They sent me a reply that said “this is normal for our fish and we’re sorry you’re disappointed“. It really isn’t normal. It was a small piece and it was placed in a box and then handed to me so I didn’t actually see it when I picked my fish up . I have to say that I have given them a chance to explain and they failed to do so and basically told me that I was in the wrong. This was the normal size portion for their fish it was not a small portion it was £9 for cod and chips. I’ve looked at some of the pictures and they’re all bigger than the piece of fish they gave me . All they had to do was own the problem and they were sorry but they told me this was normal. Well, I’ll upload the picture and you can see for yourself if you think that is a big enough piece of fish there in mind I paid full price and did not have a small portion .

Don’t like writing poor reviews and very rarely do so, especially in our lovely village. Disappointed beyond belief ! Basic takeaway food from a chip shop, pie dinner x2. Hardly any gravy, a sweetness to the peas that was difficult to get past, scrapping them off the meal. Pie was solid, no filling at all, which I find bizarre as I’m sure these are brought in, can only presume they have been sat under the heat for a prolonged time drying the actual food out. Chips resembled McCann oven chips, gone wrong, chunky, cold in the middle, pale in completion, basically not editable ! This was the same with the Gyros and chips, hate to say this was a dreadful experience !

After previously enjoying the fish and chips I bought two portions tonight and was disappointed. The chips were stodgy, not as many as usual and the price had gone up to £17 from £14. Wasn't worth it. From this experience I wouldn't return.

This chippy never fails. The food is always delicious. The staff are efficient and friendly. The portions are generous and utterly filling. I highly recommend this chippy. Oh and it is accessible for wheelchair users too - which isn't always the case for many establishments still, despite the laws on access being around since 1995.

I often call in for hot crispy chips to enjoy on the local beach.

Disgraceful! ! We asked for two small fish and small chips.It was so small it would not fill your back teeth, it was just enough to keep you alive,No wonder the chippy down the road was queuing out the door.We will be joining the queue next time. The British Chippy never again

The owners could not have been more helpful. They prepared fresh chips for us. Our food was hot, well presented tasty and served on clean crockery. Our food was excellent value. We have never visited before but we will call again.

Been this place numerous times, their foods not bad. Been tonight and that’s the final straw, the lad that’s normally there wasn’t (which I was glad about as he swears in front of customers and as I normally go in with my kids, it’s not good). Waited ages for my food as they were so unorganised as did the rest of the customers (which you’ve also hacked off). When I finally got my food upon getting home the order was wrong and the biggest insult was the size of the portions (I wish if took pics). I took it back and showed the lad fair enough the apologised but got my money back and left.

I’ve been using this shop on and off since it opened . It’s just a dreadful place now fed up ordering fish . Was their Friday 3 fish ordered they were broken up in pieces this is not the first time this has happened and they think it’s acceptable to be served this the end pieces have no fish in them mine went in the bin a total waste of £20 peas are cold gravy congealed lumps of gravy it’s not acceptable at all . And it’s happened once to often

Went in for the first time the other day to have a look at the menu and ended up ordering the salt and pepper chips and to my surprise they where the best chips I've ever had. They tasted like heaven was sad go c them go. Would strongly recommend so much better than the sh*t whole up the road

Had a poor experience at the busy bee so I decided to try out the british chippy. The man battering the fish scraped the mixture off his hands into the large container of the batter. The food looked very appealing and was delicious. However, 45 minutes later I was stuck in the bathroom for the rest of the night, leaking out of both ends!! please call me on this number +447715939325 as I wish to speak to your management. Excellent fish and chips. Fish is always cooked to order, you can have the regular size or small. Chips always freash and a generous portion. Mushy peas perfect. Curry sauce choice of spicy or normal. Never been disappointed.

Myself and my partner have frequented this establishment several times before, both for take away and to dine in. The service is impeccable and the food is always first class. On this occaision We stopped off for a take away and was served by Lucas and I must say it was even better than usual...It was cooked to perfection. The batter was tasty and wonderfully crispy and the chips were golden with just the right amount of crisp and fluffy inside. They also serve the best battered haggis in the country. We will use no other fish and chip establishment again.

Entered the chippy for an order to collect. Absolutely no customer service what so ever from any of the younger staff. I would understand if the shop was busy but it was not, no eye contact was made to the customer nor any conversational skills. As an experienced waiting on staff in a chip shop myself, I have no idea why or even how a member of staff is unable to greet customers. Great food but absolutely shocking service.

I called in at about 6pm today (Friday). The young lad (owners son I think) was cooking and 2 young girls taking orders and serving. I've kept coming here for a few years now but the service is just poor when the male owner is not onsite. I see that most comments are replied by the owner 'Gill'. I'm guessing that's the lady who deals with the restaurant and doesn't appear to give much interest in the customers or how the staff are doing.

Our first visit today. Fab service. Brilliant food especially the chips.We holiday around here 4 times a year and can't believe we have missed this Gem. We will definitely visit when we visit again. Well done.

Went in and placed my order 20 min later still waiting as I ordered curry and none left got home and the food was cold very disappointed

Went in and sat down and waited for around ten minutes - despite the staff being able to see us from the chippy side, (all busy chatting with each other) and a staff member walking through the cafe, no one came anywhere near us ! Lots of dirty tables as well.

You can always rely on British chippy in Ainsdale for the best quality fish cooked to order and generous portions of lovely chips. They have a wide menu of take away and eat in options. Service can sometimes be a little slow but this is due to the fact that often they will cook fish to order. Highly recommended.

One of the best chip shops if you want fish! Do smaller portions for small eaters! Lovely crisp batter and not too much of it! Good value too!

I have just been tonight. I bought lightly battered plaice and chips. Cannot give high enough praise. The lads serving/cooking were extremely courteous, cheerful and efficient - even to the offer of fresh lemon for the fish.

Phoned an order and was told it would be about 20 mins. Turned up 20 mins later and they had not even started it. And, now there was a big que. Told em to forgett it and went elsewhere.

After about a year fancied fish chips and peas ,so thought i would give them one last go.

Went to British chippy on Sunday 3 PM. ordered fish chips and mushy peas waited for an age when they did come it was awful, fish was hard to cut as if it had been left out then cooked chips tasteless would not go again even if it was free.

What a lovely fish and chip shop, serving hot, fresh food with delightful cheery staff. I had haddock and chips and they were some of the best I have tasted. I shall be going again. Excellent!!

Came here when we were on holiday, put our order in quite clearly, waited ages, no one knew what a saveloy was (didn’t know it was just a southern thing Oi Oi saveloy! ) and when we finally got our grub, 2 portions of chips were missing! This was after we drove down the front to eat them! Too much salt on the chips and in the curry sauce! What a load of bow locks!

We went here tonight after recieving a 20% off voucher through the door. When we arrived we mentioned the voucher and was told it would be deducted from the bill. When we went to pay someone else was at the till, she charged us full price and despite me asking several times she told me there was no possible way to cancel the sale or refund the money. Feel completely ripped off.

Went there at tea time and I am not lying when I say this. It’s the worst chippy I have ever been to. Chips were half cooked, burger not cooked in the middle. What a waste of money and they had Two young lads who didn’t no what they were doing ( must have a really good boss ). Terrible.

Guinness Book of records need to come and see this chippy, we ordered 4 portions of chips yesterday, when we got home (around the corner), we were stunned how little the portions are. Basically one potato's worth per person.

DElicious fresh fish and chips, smaller portions for children and pensioners, always hot and lovely clean premises.

The chips are the best here. Not too greasy and the fish is lovely and crispy! We’ve eaten in here as well as takeout and food is always piping hot. Staff are also lovely and friendly.

We live around the corner and always use the British Chippy. Eat in or take away you will not find a better chippy. good food, polite and friendly staff super value for money.

Fantastic little place to stop off and enjoy a Fish and Chip Supper, we love to sit in and enjoy a great big pot of tea with our chosen meal, although the takeaways are just as good, would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Despite being under-staffed and busy our fish n chips were so good, in fact I would actually say it was one of the best chippy teas I've had. The batter was light, the fish gorgeously tasty and the chips perfect.

Food didn't have much flavour. Didnt taste like they were cooking the chips in a tasty cooking oil. Have tried 6 or 7 chippies in town I liked chips from all more than here.

Visitamos a conseguir pescado y patatas fritas. Todos los peces es hecha, por un personal excelente. Como entramos nos preguntaron qué queríamos, luego poner el pescado. Cuando llegamos a la caja estaba listo. La calidad era excepcional y como dice el servicio excelente.

Qué joya de lugar. Eficiente servicio rápido, la comida sabrosa y lo mejor de todo lo que satisface el senior en que proporcionan para la pequeña apetito. Los jóvenes eran muy educados que ofrece sirve de mucha ayuda. Buena relación calidad-precio.

We usually go to the other fish and chip shop in the village, but thought we would try the British Chippy for a change.We will revisit as even the best places have occasional bad days. Unfortunately on the evening we visited the service was slow and the fish and chips were very greasy and overcooked when we unwrapped them at home. Underneath the grease though, some good fish and chips were hiding, and I am sure our experience was a rare one so I have rated 4 stars - and I'm confident that next time it will be 5 stars!

Nipped in as was walking past, decided to eat in ordered for 2adults and 2 children, the food was fantastic and the bill was even better. Very good service. Quick and very helpful.Highly recommended

Drove three miles to try this place, which has good reviews, arrived just before 2pm, checked closing time on door, 2:30pm, went in restaurant side, and was told they had turned everything off (except the OPEN sign), and they had nothing left, my elderly mother and myself were absolutely disgusted, we then had to find somewhere else to have lunch. Total waste of time and money (petrol).

There aren't many chippies left now where you can sit in and enjoy your meal, but we've found a cracker! Spotlessly clean. Friendly staff. Reasonable prices. We even asked for something that wasn't on the menu....breaded plaice...and it was no problem for them......and it tasted great. We'll certainly be visiting again!!

This is by far the best chippy in the village! you always get a friendly welcome, the fish is always cooked fresh to order and the servings are large and good value. As a regular customer I have never had a take away meal that was less than excellent, well done and don't change a thing!

Just fancied a chip barm, chips hot, well cooked, in top ten for chips. Chip barn bake enough to feed two people easy, will defo use this place again.

We had fantastic food here, can't complain at all. Sometimes I can find fish & chips greasy but these were perfect. Really great portion sizes and they were brilliant with our children. The staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was nice. The toilets were very clean and smelt fresh too. Good value for money. Helped make our stay at Pontins bearable!

They serve the best fresh fish, everything cooked to order, not sitting for hours on heat plate. I had haddock and chips best I've ever tasted. Friendly staff will defiantly recommend.

I have been here 3 times now and on all 3 occasions around tea time I have been the only person in the chip shop and no chips or fish is ready. I have to stand in the boiling heat waiting for 20 minutes for them to cook some chips. They take your money for the order without telling you there is a long wait and then expect you to stand there. Also, they are extremely mean on the chip portions. I ordered a large and there were about 3 chips in the box!! Never again

I used to live in Ainsdale and shared my friday night chippy tea allegiance between this place and the busy bee - both great little chippies.

Great chippy. Fast food freshly cooked to order. Great taste. No Chinese meals on the menu to slow things down. Just what a chip should be.

This is the best English chippy we have found.When entering the take away side you need to let them know if you would like any fish with your chips as it is cooked while you wait.The fresh fish is dipped in batter (as usual) but then the excess is wiped off so you get less batter and more fish per bite, and although I actually like the taste of crisp batter I have to admit that this gives a better taste and those that are not so keen on a thick coating of batter may well appreciate it even more.We have eaten in the diner as well as buying from the take away and it is comfortable and "nice and warm" on a cold winters night - but I always think that fish and chips always taste better eaten outside and "from the paper".A slice of lemon comes with every meal and the "pensioners special " meal comes with cod, chips and mushy peas at a very reasonable price!Highly recommended.

came straight here after getting off the train. There were 6 of us, 3 adults and 3 kids and the order was taken very patiently as the little ones hummed and decided. Really good value and amazing chips and superb batter on the fish, so light.

Weekending in Ainsdale we felt a traditional chippy supper in order. Reasonable portion sizes and items individually wrapped. Portion of chips & peas big enough to share and topped up with a cod for me ( served with a piece of lemon) and pie for other half. At £8 for two meals reasonably priced. We'll visit again when staying locally.

The café area was well-presented, clean and tidy. The service was friendly and the food was delicious. It took a bit longer to arrive than I thought it would, but we were a big group and it was worth the wait.

Got a takeaway with family member from this place. The chips are normally a good indication of the quality of these type of eatery. These chips were very good. They also asked me if I would accept a microwaved pie, which I declined, but credit to them for this as some places just do it anyway. This is a good fish & Chip shop.

As a fan of the fish and chip meal I was told that this chippy is the best around and boy aren't they right. I have been to this chip shop many times and have always had great food and fantastic service. The portions are huge and my husband and I always share a portion of chips to save on wastage! The fish is skinned which is so much better than most others and the batter is thin and crispy. There is very little grease too. Food is usually cooked when we order and is preferable to it having been sitting for ages waiting to be sold. We always feel welcome and chat whilst waiting for our food to be cooked. A great addition to the village.

Found this by chance on a day back from southport - wow, so clean and efficient, went with my husband and two children, was served by Jon - what a nice man - very attentive, great with the kids - made them eat all dinner before sweets ha, all staff were lovely and deffo get the fish x

I went on Saturday lunch time and had a pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy! My husband had the steak and kidney pudding. The meal was great - very high quality and good value. In fact we liked it so much we went back on Monday when we had fish and chips. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a traditional fish and chip dinner!

We had a day out at Southport family of 8, before going home fancied some fish & chips saw the sign for this restaurant. Friendly staff, provisions for toddlers high chair provided, the fish & chips with mushy peas was excellent, fish lightly battered, chips not greasy, beautifully cooked, prices reasonable, even do a senior special meal of fish & chips which was a smaller portion which was just perfect. I highly recommend this cafe/restaurant & would definitely eat there again.

Over priced rubbish portions as big as kids portions, greasy and horrible. Chips served in tiny white trays charging seaside prices in a town. Gave me geartburn and stomach ache

The whole experience was fantastic. Myself and 3 other members visited at around 7pm and were met with a warm welcome. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant were fabulous. The food was excellent value for money and was brought to the table practically straight away. I would recommend here to anyone!

Been here for my second time and what can I say but the best food in England by far sorry staff are so friendly well professional place was spotless and lovely athmosphere had the haddock and it was cooked perfect could not fault this place at all defo worth trying guys staff advised me they will be selling alcohol from 8th August which would be good to have a drink with your meal

Never been because they cannot cater for a gf diet! Lack of foresight given this place has recently been redeveloped! Very very poor, especially given that there are a others in the area that can and do so extremely well!! A shame that a local place can't seem to facilitate it!

The brittish chippy is situated next to the train station and is without doubt the best chippy round this area, the food is cooked fresh and is spotlessly clean, the staff are very friendly and there is a good choice of dishes as well as a few oldie but goldies like pickled eggs ect. Give it a try you won't be dissapointed.

I visited British Chippy on one of those VERY HOT days of this month (July 2016) with two friends. We arrived in the afternoon just before opening time so we were the only customers there at the start. We were in the 'restaurant' area.I was impressed by how clean everything looked and the decor has been well-thought out with a red, white and blue theme and some slightly cheesy sayings on the walls. The food was very good: hot and fresh and I imagine this would also be the case if we hadn't been the first customers to arrive as the staff appeared professional and attentive. The only slight 'problem' we had (and this was NOT the fault of the staff was when they ran out of chilled bottled water. However they did apologise and explain they had just had a large group in who ordered all of their chilled stock. They did have plenty of water only not chilled.I did notice a couple of flying insects towards the end of our meal (literally a couple!) but given the heat of the day I don't think anyone really could have done anything about that.I will be returning here hopefully very soon.

Was very disappointed mainly because the last two times I've been the fish was way overcooked. It is very easy to cook battered fish well and also easy to over cook it. Unfortunately the staff appear to cook until the batter is dark brown and not light golden brown. The fish should cook in 2 maybe 3 minutes max. Until they learn to cook fish properly I won't be back. Shame really, place and service is good.

Here we have restaurant quality food at takeaway prices. Here we have the BEST chippy, and I mean the BEST! Every time I visit, I am fulfilled. The fish is succulent and tender, the batter crispy and fresh. The staff are welcoming and good. This new chippy is dynamite and a taste explosion!!!!!!!

This chip shop was for several years a total disaster until the last owners took it over a couple of years ago and turned it around completely. They had to leave for family reasons and now run a superb chippy in Douglas IOM. Chris took it over and maintained the same excellent standards. I like to use it whenever I can but regret that on the last two occasions I visited (Chris was not there) they did not have what I wanted so I had to go to their main competitor. Meat pie once and steak puddings on the other occasion. The greatest compliment I can give them is the food is on a par with their competitor which has been there for over 40 years!

As I have just recently discovered this chippy I will be coming back! The staff where very helpful & polite & the food was great quality! Thank you to the manager & staff who made my visit most enjoyable.

I have visited this chippy on a number of occasions.The first few times the manager was present. The atmosphere was welcoming,he chatted and was friendly,and the food was awesome. however I'm sad to say on the last four occasions the shop is being run by young adults that look bored,dont engage and the food does not seem the same. On one occasion I ordered peas on getting home which is a two min drive they where freezing cold and had brown bits in them.Im no expert but I watched one young man batter fish and I'm sure a different procedure should have been applied.Some staff training perhaps and a more regular show from the manager would benefit .

I love Chinese food and wish The British Chippy also did Chinese because it would be amazing! This is the best fish & chips, hands down it is the undisputed winner in North Liverpool. A shame it only does English dishes.Good restaurant added this year, nice to stop for lunch or an early dinner, very child friendly and great staff. Price reflects quality of the food.

British Chippy have the best chips in Ainsdale but they used to be better. Before ownership changed, the chips were the way I liked them: Not greasy at all. Now they're a fair amount greasier but still enjoyable.

Food is lovely, particularly the fish. There's a wide variety of meals and now also an eat in restaurant area with a lovely atmosphere, it seems like an actual restaurant - not the usual chippy seating. I live locally and this is the only chippy I buy from. Excellent food and service.(Ps if you have a big appetite try the chicken burger - you get two chicken burgers in a bun, really nice and very filling)

We were camping at Willow bank camp site and walked into Ainsdale after reading trip advisor for the best chippy.The takeaway was very clean and very friendly staff who even gave us a taxi number to get back to camp, The fish and chip dinner was the best that we had had for a long time.The sit down restaurant is right next door and we will be in the area again later in the month so we will be trying that.

We were caravanning nearby and looked for the best fish & chips near to us. This place did not disappoint. The restaurant next door was heaving and taking reservations, we opted for the takeaway. Even that queue was way out of the door. A reassuring worthwhile wait in my opinion.This place is obviously popular with locals as the staff appeared to know lots of customers.I placed my order with the friendly, efficient and courtesy staff. I was accidentally splat with batter by the manager (I think). It was actually a very good shot and made me giggle. Once the pho par was realised there was an unhesitating discount applied. Many thanks.I would not hesitate to recommend this place. The food was delicious and the option of smaller sized portions was ideal for my 11 year old that loves fish but struggles to finish it all usually. Can't wait to see come a visit again.

British Chippy in Ainsdale near Southport started as a takeaway, but extended next door and now also has a comfortable sit down option sharing the takeaway kitchen.You can also have a chicken or prawn salad if you don't feel like fish and chips or pie and chips. It is great if you don't feel ravenously hungry, because the chips are offered in 3 sizes and the fish in 2 sizes, which is a great idea because not everyone has the same appetite do they? Clean comfortable with pleasant staff and a great British menu, you get a nice big pot of tea too. Highly recommended.

Tried this recently refurbished fish and chip restaurant on a saturday evening. The atmosphere was welcoming as was the waitress. The restaurant was spotlessly clean and segregated from the adjacent takeaway section thus minimising cooking aromas. The menu offered a wide selection of choice, as well as the traditional chips with fish, pies and sausages etc there were jacket potatoes, salads etc to choose from. We chose traditional cod, chips and peas and were not disappointed. It was a good portion of chips which were not smothered in fat residue or greasy and the fish was fresh and lightly battered. A nice touch was the pottery tea pot instead of the usual aluminium type more typical of these establishments. We can certainly recommend it to friends and family and will be revisiting.

Tried this new café , adjoined to the chippy for lunch. Nice décor, friendly staff and very good fish and chips. Handy for the train station.Will definitely visit again.

This is the 3rd take away I have got from here and I never get what I order. Can not understand why the staff never listen to what your actually ordering.

This is Chippy at its best, very good food and service, in brand new pleasant surroundings. Top Cod. Glad we are local.
