This was our first return since Covid to the restaurant at the Brickwall Hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary and I am happy to say that it has not lost any of its former excellence. The service was friendly and attentive, there was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was well presented, cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. My wife's Gluten Free diet did not cause any problem as every care was taken to make sure that her food was right for her. The portion sizes were ample and very good value for money. I can certainly recommend.

What a gem. While some might class the hotel as dated, I’d class it as home comfort. Clean, fresh & comfortable rooms. The staff are 10/10. Had breakfast, a good few pints at the bar and dessert over our stay. As two 28 year olds, it was a welcoming, friendly & homely stay, when traveling for work. Can’t wait to be back.

We are a Parker Family, we have six adults and six children, we were very well looked after. It was the day after boxing day and we were the only party in. The food was great and Giulio and the team looked after us very well. The children were children and just wanted to run around outside, I apologized to Giulio, who said that was not a problem. Some will say it's old fashion but we like it just the way it is.

We stayed one night in this lovely historic hotel. Our room was in the new extension and had a very comfortable king sized bed, a large walk in shower and plenty of storage space. We had our evening meal there as well as breakfast and both were excellent. Excellent wine list. A pleasure to have breakfast cooked to order rather than fighting over a buffet. Staff were friendly and helpful and worked hard. Highly recommended.

Lovely setting, excellent service. Partner very happy with his meal - and I was , BUT please could you think about offering more than one vegetarian option.? Have looked at dinner menus and Christmas menus and still only one option. Really feels like ‘take it or leave it’. Would put me off eating here regularly which is a shame because it’s lovely.

I was booking a Ladies Lunch and the telephone was answered straightaway with a friendly and helpful voice. Yesterday, there was a table of 13 of us seated in the Garden Room. We felt we had the place to ourselves and were not rushed at all. The food and wine were excellent, together with the service by the Italian waiters. Julio, as always, was very welcoming and it is always such a pleasure to dine here. It was also nice to see Pepe. Thank you for making us so welcome. Well done.

Not a modern hotel but a good place to stay in the area. Check in was easy and very friendly, I also left my key in my room and the receptionist was very helpful. The room is a little old fashioned but functional. They had biscuits which is a rarity at the moment. The food is a little pricy but the service in the restaurant is excellent, same goes for breakfast. Would stay again

A friend and I booked for a table for two for lunch. Pompous patron made us wait in corridor to be shown to our table, after waiting for 5 minutes I asked if I could find my own table and he was quite rude (during this time he was only standing at reception speaking to the reception staff). The food is sub-standard - rack of lamb barely cooked, fat still white and solid, roast potatoes warm and soft, carrots still had skin on. The bottle of white wine was room temperature and of cheap quality. The dining room is dark, dreary and a depressing place to eat. The only positives: the glass of water was chilled and the waiting staff were friendly. Never again !!!!

Stayed here for one night on business. Friendly staff on arrival and shown to my room. Room was large with 2 single beds pushed together. Carpet was a bit questionable in terms of cleanliness. Place appeared tired and in need of decorating. Bed was comfortable and nice clean linen. Bathroom was basic at best. I had lunch in the restaurant and was unimpressed. During this time I heard both French and Spanish when staff were communicating with me: I was Senora, then told Bon appetite! Really? How pretentious. The prawn cocktail was watery and tasteless. The salmon I had was cooked ok but celery mornay or bake or whatever it was??? How strange and something I declined, sounded and looked awful. £3 for a tumbler that was only 3/4 filled with cola: I asked for a coke but didn’t expect this to come from a large bottle, daylight robbery. It was not cold and I expected bottled or draught not what I got! Overall very average and I wouldn’t stay here again for sure.

Was taken here for my sister-in-Law’s birthday. Let me start by saying that the welcome of the maitre d’ and his staff was wonderful, really warm and friendly. The dining room is very large, bright and airy. The pricing of the food is reasonable. But the food doesn’t appear to have moved on in fifty years. I could have eaten melon for my first course, and an omelette for my main on Saturday lunch. I have never seen an omelette on a restaurant menu save at our local Chinese takeaway, filed under “English dishes”. Or at that tourist trap on Mont St Michel in Brittany. Anyway, we digress. I had tomato, mozzarella and avocado salad to start, there was one 3mm thick disk of avocado, the mozzarella the basics one you get in the plastic bag from the supermarket. Main was chicken wrapped in back bacon in a red wine sauce. The sauce didn’t really taste of anything. The accompanying vegetables did though, they were good. Other family members had steak which looked really well cooked. Cheese for dessert came over as an afterthought, was just uninspiring. The Brickwall is trumpeted as a silver service restaurant, fine if you like that kind of thing. To anyone north of 40 it is a total irrelevance. The staff here are proudly Italian, and proud of their hospitality. The wine list shows a little promise. It would be amazing if the owners and staff could introduce some real regional Italian dishes onto the menu, it would help imbue the food with the same passion that the staff undoubtedly demonstrate to their customers every day. As it is now, this restaurant suits elderly people who are less concerned about what they are eating, and more interested in being treated warmly and eating in comfortable surroundings. If that is the restaurant’s sole ambition, so be it. It is a noble one. But hell would I like to see it pull the stops out a little. Maybe the owners think some culinary fireworks (even if they were of the indoor variety) would upset their loyal clientele. Shame is is that in 20 years they won’t have a clientele, because they would likely have departed for the great dining room in the sky. We all have to evolve. Let’s hope the Brickwall can before it’s too late.Paul

The menu is a bit like stepping back into the 1970's - prawn cocktail, steak etc (but no black forest gateau to my disappointment) but it was really good. Hoge portions meant that there was no chance of a pudding and frankly we didn't really need the starter either. But is was well cooked, particularly the lamb, and the service was first class which tipped it into a 5 star rating.

Been here a few times with extended family for special occasions and each time unfortunately it appears to get worse. This time we ordered from the bar, two people ordered steaks, we were asked how we wanted them cooked and then at serving time received steak and ale pies and we told steaks were never on the menu, no apologies or attempt to correct, wine ordered was not delivered and sauce such as mint sauce with the excellent Sussex lamb were not served, my daughter loved her roast beef, but the horseradish sauce was not served. I regret saying this but this restaurant doesn’t deserve their regulars money. Some food was good, most was average, I wouldn’t want to come again.

This hotel has taken very clever wide angle pictures of the rooms because the room was nowhere near as big in real life as it seem on the picture. We stayed in a very interesting room that had slopping floors, in all angles not just from one side, and quite a sharp slope at that too as well as a big step to the bathroom. If you have balance problem you will be very uncomfortable in this room. Located in a nice enough little village on the cross roads. I would not recommend this hotel for a weekend away but if it is the most convenient location on your route it works for a couple of nights. Free parking.

The food was great. However for the price we paid for dinner here I don't expect to have a view of the Kitchen area. Where the clean plates stacked and the dirty plates are placed or the cleaning cupboard for the hoover. Neither do I expect to be rammed in the back of my chair 5 times without a word of apology from the waiter. They were not busy and had plenty of tables so why sit us there. And then to sit another table directly behind us made no sense at all.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of September. The room was very comfortable, with plenty of storage space, although the bathroom was rather small with an awkward step in and out of it. Situated at the side of the hotel, it was also very quiet. Breakfasts were good, with plenty of choice of both hot and cold items. The only meal we had at the hotel was one lunch, but as this was a celebration lunch for a large group, we cannot comment on the meals in general. Having said that, we enjoyed the meal we had. Because it was the end of the season the outdoor swimming pool was closed, but even if it had been open, the weather wasn’t suitable for taking a dip.

Have just returned from an extremely enjoyable lunch. We were greeted warmly by Jessica, who then led us through to the bar for a pre lunch drink ( we arrived half an hour early). There was a warm and friendly waiter waiting to take our drinks order. We sank into the old fashioned red velour chairs, all agreeing on a somewhat old fashioned decor and ambience. They haven’t exploited the charm and detail of the ancient architecture (built in 1599) I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is whiff of the middle class expectations of the 60’s and 70’s Deemed posh then but not now. One now expects blonde wood and rough hewned oak floors etc; including a pretentious “modern” menu. Am I criticising? - Absolutely not! I loved it!! The attention given to us was truly amazing. I loved the silver service, crisp white linen etc; At one point there were three waiters at our table attending to our needs. As expected, the menu was also slightly retro but all the better for it. Who cares? It was all cooked so well with love and care. Hubby and I had the Romney Marsh lamb, sweet, tender and delicious. Sister has the pork and she loved it. To summarise. If you wish to be totally relaxed, fed well in a happy and well loved developed family hotel restaurant, then this is for you. Children and dogs are welcomed. Many other hotels claim to be family friendly, offering lip service only, however, the Brickwall is the real McCoy. Can’t wait to go back in summer where I can take a dip in their outside heated pool! It’s the people that make or break establishments not the decor, furniture or fancy menus. It’s run by a father and daughter team for 35 years. (Italian descent). So we can enjoy the best of two workstgevcgarnd of an old English house couple with Italian flair and service.

My parents love this restaurant and I am never sure why. It falls short of being good on every level and I always feel that the owners have just lost interest and are letting it stumble along. The food is OK but not much more than that. The service is attentive on the surface but there is little substance. Requests for water are completely ignored. We ran out of vegetables and I had to ask 3 times before being grudgingly presented with what looked like the scrapings of someone else's plate. But for me, the worst thing was the attitude of the waiter who refused to ask the chef to cut my mother's lamb off the bone. He simply said no. My mother has dementia, and instead of a relaxed and enjoyable evening, I had to cut my mother's food at the table as if she was a child. Embarrassing and demeaning for her and really quite hard to understand. I wouldn't go back.

The village of Sedlescombe is lovely, and the hotel has a nice setting. We were there for two nights, breakfast was excellent, and so was the evening meal; and without exception all staff were friendly, attentive and efficient.Overall we enjoyed our stay, but maybe this hotel is a little on the expensive side, which in part is maybe due to its idyllic location on the village green. The Brickwall has plenty of charm and atmosphere and the staff look after you very well, but the food lets it down. I expect better for the price. Our starters were something you could throw together at home in about 30 seconds - a big handful of lettuce with precious little on top. Our monkfish main was again poor. A large chunk of dry, tasteless fish smothered in a tomato sauce. I guess the fish was out of the freezer. One thing they do well is their vegetables. I gave the poor rating for the food experience, not the place.

We stayed here on a voucher deal which made it a good value hotel on B&B basis. The hotel itself was clean and all the staff pleasant and very helpful. It's set in a nice little village with a good local pub. The other clients where all OAPs which made for a nice quiet stay. The hotel decor is traditional English but could also be described as dated, all the decor is very heavy (red) and could do with lightening whilst still retaining its old english charm. Our room was clean and comfortable with good wifi and tea/coffee making facilities. Although we didn't travel with our dogs it appeared very dog friendly. The hotel could do with better signage from the road and improve its curb appeal. You almost wouldn't know it was there. Plenty of parking out the back and a swimming pool ( although we didn't use it). We didn't eat in the restaurant other than for breakfast which was an adequate buffet and full English.

Front of house staff were friendly and welcoming, apart from the owner who was not. The restaurant was very full and clearly popular with an older crowd. We sat in an unfortunate position where for the whole meal I looked directly into the kitchen watching the dishwasher being emptied because the swinging doors stayed open. As we were so close to the kitchen we also felt the thumping past of the many staff in the old wooden floors as they rushed around serving the food. Starters were excellent, a scallop dish with pea purée and an avocado dish that were freshly cooked and delicious. There was an odd and unnecessary sorbet served between starter and main that our waitress advised we should have because it's free so why not. I can only imagine the sorbet is an attempt to pretend fine dining? The main courses were not made by the same chef as the starter, in fact I think they were ready meals or microwaved from frozen. Certainly no qualified chef came near the over-cooked from frozen carrots and beans, the very strange celery and cheese mixture, or the meat dishes. We had lamb (dry and as if from a factory canteen and lying around waiting to be served for hours) and duck (an inedible combination of tough and dry covered in thick sweet syrup). Dessert was some ready made profiteroles, dry and also inedible. We had spent the day playing golf so we were exhausted and very hungry, but even in that state I could not eat the duck beyond the first bite. My hubby ate the lamb in desperation. The staff were all friendly and trying their best but the place seems to revel in chaos and busy rather than quality or care. It's rare I write a bad review but this was like going back to British food in the eighties, and I really don't think the management realise how bad the quality of the food is in comparison to what is now expected in British food today. It is obviously very popular which I imagine is down to the friendly atmosphere and the big portions, rather than a discerning crowd. These days when we can cook at home well and everyone knows about fresh quality ingredients, there's really no excuse in a professional kitchen to serve food this bad. I certainly don't want to pay for food that's so far below my own standard of cooking at home. I felt ashamed in front of the young Italian staff, hoping that they don't think that this is what quality British food is, and that this is what we like to eat. Everyone we spoke to in the local area said we should have eaten at the Queens Head and I wished we had too.

Husband and I did a late booking for 4 nights , Monday-Friday, so we could explore the area. Very old, quirky building with beams, low doors, sloping floors and leaded windows. There is a newer extension but didn't see the rooms there and we were happy to be in the original building. Our room (7) was comfortable, with windows on both sides, armchairs and a low table and a small bathroom. The guests' pool was very welcome after the heat of the day and the staff couldn't have been more attentive and helpful. When we arrived the receptionist was on the phone trying to help a guest find somewhere to buy a swimsuit - nothing too much trouble! Breakfast is cooked English or any variation of it and a cold buffet-style table with fruit, cereals, yogurt, juice, meats, cheeses, pastries, so all tastes catered for. Evening meals are 2 or 3 courses at a set price and traditional fayre, with a sorbet to clear the palate between courses. We had a raspberry sorbet which was a little unusual and seemed like dessert before main, but no less good for that! All in all a well run, charming hotel which was perfectly situated for Battle, Hastings, Rye, Great Dixter, Herstmonceux and numerous other places of interest.

We booked a table for a week day evening for 5 people.I had expected good things but was disappointed from start to finish. The service was terrible and they were clearly pre occupied by a larger table of people. Even with this being the case, the food was awful. The flavour of the steak was masked by a poor peppercorn sauce, the salmon was served with butter and cucumber...? The chicken was dry and only made edible by the bacon and Stilton that it came with and this was all served with green beans, cold potatoes and soggy cabbage with peppers mixed in. None of the meals we ordered went with any of the sides on offer. The menu does not make sense.I ordered a drink twice, I received it 10 minutes after asking for a third time. The drink that I ordered came with the ice and the lemon but none of the actual liquid that I had ordered. The service was bad.If I was to sum up the food in one word it would be 'Lazy'. If I had two words in which to sum it up, 'Lazy' would be preceded by an expletive. If I were to mention a positive it would be that the food conjured up memories of my youth, specifically the school canteen.Avoid!

We booked this hotel because it was nearby The Battle of Hastings tour and we were looking for a quiet, comfortable place to stay the night before a busy day there. We arrived at check in around 3:30pm and we were immediately told that we couldn't do dinner reservations until after 7pm because there would be a very large wedding there. We were then taken upstairs to a room that was very warm and had one window. The one side of the room was about a foot shorter than the other, and i had to be careful not to hit my head. The bathroom features a bath, but no shower, which was inconvenient. We were hungry and tired, so we took a walk. Fortunately, the Queens Head Inn was across the street and turned out to serve us the best meal we had on our entire trip! When we returned, we tried to sleep, but the walls were paper thin and the noise from the wedding kept us up well past 11pm. Needless to say, we would not stay here again!

A one night stay on a business trip gave us the opportunity to sample the food at the Brickwall. It didn't disappoint, there was a good selection of starters, mains & deserts and as a bonus a home made sorbet slipped in for good measure. The wine list was good and reasonably priced and the service was spot on.

A simple approach to quality of food and service !!A dining room with table configurations for single up to party size to suit all occasions.Attention to customer needs is just superb.Food standard and presentation is one of the best !!Prices are clearly defined for either a two course or three course option.Wine list is extensive from various world sources but the Sicilian wine selection is to be recommended.

The Brickwall Hotel offers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere and feels a little like an eating place of yesteryear. The staff are keen to look after your needs and make sure delivery of meals is efficient and well timed. They gave advise on meals that did not use dairy products when asked, which limited the choice.

I love the attention to detail and, very warm friendly vibe this place has, I live 15minutes away and rate this over any local hotel restaurant, warm character charm panache and yet simplistic, just the sort of place East Sussex has to offer stunning setting and fantastic service all round. This is got to be the secret garden of the East Sussex imo

We have eaten here many times. The atmosphere is lovely and the dining room very olde worlde. A lot of attention is paid to detail in both table setting and serving of food. The staff are great. Don't know what they would do without Giulio. The food is good, but they need to vary the menu a little more.

Myself and my husband found this hotel in March 2007. We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! We thought it would be lovely to go back again for out 10th wedding anniversary! We arrived on 25th March 2016 and immediately realised why we came back. The staff and management are very friendly, nothing is too much bother, the breakfast is excellent with lots to choose from. This time we stayed for the evening meal and I must say it was amazing! The Brickwall Hotel has brilliant character and is oldey woldy and I wouldn't change a thing! We have decided that we will be making a further visit later in the year. Thank you for a perfect stay.

Lovely log fire in bar. Drinks arrived promptly and our lunch order taken without undue delay. (There is a separate vegetarian menu too) Shown to the best table in the restaurant. The food was excellent with really generous portions. The Restaurant Manager and the two waiters were really efficient and pleasant. I think they were Italian but spoke perfect English. After lunch we lingered for about an hour at our table enjoying coffee and chatting and there was no rush to move us. Can't quite remember the price of lunch but it is in the ballpark of 1 course £11; 2 courses £15 and 3 courses £19. You are not pressed to have more than one course if that is all you want. The bread that is brought to your table at the start of the meal is very moreish so, if you want to eat a full 3 courses, I would advise not to eat too much of the bread!

Stayed for one night just after New Year . The room in the original part of the building had more character than the rear wing where we stayed before. Still a few "quaint" touchs in the room which made it look a little dated but good value and friendly service.

Met there with friends & clients on New Year's Day evening: good welcome and attention, but the starters were unimaginative and the main course (Beef Wellington) was indescribably small, plus the sweet (creme brûlée) was more like a custard bake than what it should have been.Overall, a pleasant evening but not a restaurant to which I would return swiftly.

We stayed here as part of a deal with Sedlescombe Vineyard and so didn't really know what to expect. The lady who booked us in was friendly and helpful, especially when we locked ourselves out of the room within about 2 minutes! The hotel is gorgeous and our massive bed was very comfortable. Nice bar and relaxing lounge area. We had a beautiful beef rossini for dinner which was cooked to perfection and melt in the mouth yummy. We had the same lovely waiter for dinner and breakfast and he is a hombre encantador! The breakfast was also really good and a wide selection of fruits. We loved the frothed milk with our coffee. We would recommend a stay!

Slow service it was busy but should not affect service this is why restaurants take booking so they no how many staff to put on .had lamb which was ok ,waiter forgot mint sauce also had drunk the wine that I had ordered to have with main meal as it took a while and was not asked if we wanted any more drinks.food was ok but nothing special and when we eventually got the bill after asking twice for it we were charged £8.40 for a small glass of Shiraz .we won't return .

Gorgeous little village to wander around, you would have to drive to see any sights, but Hastings is only 10mins away. Recommend the old town of Hastings as the main town is Jeremy Kyle! The hotel is traditional old world charm. l had Best nights sleep ever. We were told there was a party when we booked in but didnt hear much noise at all! Breakfast was delightful and plenty of it. Rooms basic but comfy.

Went for Sunday lunch. Hotel very dated. Same chairs I used 30 yrs ago. Had roast beef. Very tough. Starter was ok but overall was not worth the money. Would I go again. No there are better places. I think the pub opposite would be a better bet. The toilet arrangements are very strange and lacking. Overall it promises a lot but does not deliver. I looked at the pool on the way in and would not swim in it. Looked very dirty.

We have just returned from another relaxing stay at the brickwall hotel and once again we had a lovely time. Our room which overlooked the green was smaller than the room we previously stayed in but was clean had coffee making facilities flat screen TV and ensuite, the shower cubicle was small but adequate .we took advantage of the sun beds round the swimming pool but felt the pool was not clean enough for swimming which was no big deal for us.We had dinner in the hotel and as our previous stay the food and service was first class as was the breakfast,we enjoyed our stay and will certainly be back

We stayed at the Brickwall Hotel as part of a living social deal and chose to eat in the hotel as it was so cosy and inviting but I must say the service was probably the best I have ever experienced. The waiters attention to detail was outstanding and the food serviced was lovely. I am sitting here writing this in the cosy bar area before I leave listing to italian operatic music and thinking how much this hotel and restaurant deserves a mention. Thank you for such a pleasant experience and Italy definitely rules!

We had lunch for my mum's 80th here today and it was brilliant. The staff are so friendly and helpful and very attentive. The food was very good, all served hot and at the same time, this is the second special meal we have had here and it was very good on both occasions. I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant. To top it all it is very good food at a reasonable price.

At Battle Bonfire last night and I have never experienced such bad service. The waiters were so busy talking to people they knew they didn’t even realise half the pint was spilling over and then continued to serve every person they personally knew the second they arrived at the bar which meant those who didn’t know the bartenders had a 30 minute wait. They didn’t even shake the juices so the juice was transparent.
