Had lunch with friend. Soup and baked potato very well cooked. Very pleasant owner. Was busy and took a wee while for food to arrive but freshly prepared so no complaints. Ginger beer well presented (i.e. not just a can and glass but came poured with ice and some lemon added); small point but important. Room decor themed with jazz instruments and music.

Excellent food, great service & we felt very safe and well looked after. Our orders included the cheese and bacon burger, the halloumi burgers and the cheese and pickle sandwiches and everything was delicious. The menu has a fabulous variety - I was torn between the sandwiches, the burgers & the baked potatoes - we will definitely be back so I can try my other choices! Prices are also great, especially for the generous portions. Highly recommended!

We came across this brasserie whilst in Rothesay and boy we are so glad we did. We got tea for two and fruit scones, jam and clotted cream...the tea was a large tea pot and the scones were home made and I can honestly say they were the best scones we have ever tasted. Tim was so friendly and we had a good chat with him. Two elderly ladies came in and we recommended the scones to them and they were delighted with them too. Inside was spotless and music sheets on the wall were very interesting. Very reasonable priced too. If we come to Rothesay we will definitely visit here again. Thank-you Tim and Ann for your lovely service 😀

After arriving off the Ferry we wanted to have a coffee & ended up here.. & it was more then a cup of coffee.. the second we walked through the door we were greeted, the atmosphere was welcoming and cosy, the walls decorated in old sheet music & posters, I had a latte & my partner a white coffee.. my son had a sparkling mixed orange drink (can not remember the name) but he loved it! I decided I wanted to the soup, & it was lentil.. he was fresh home made & delicious! My partner had a bacon roll & most people would say that they are pretty standard but my partner really loved the roll! Not sure if that was homemade or not but the roll was beautiful! My son had the chocolate fudge brownie.. which was homemade too! & it came with homemade ice cream! (He has the choice or vanilla or plum! He picked vanilla) he ate it within seconds! He said it was the best ice cream & brownie he’s every had! The people who own the cafe were so lovely too! & made the place very welcoming & friendly! Thank you!

We visited here yesterday and what a superb find. The food is almost exclusively homemade with produce sourced locally. I had homemade macaroni cheese - absolutely superb. In addition it cane with homemade bread from a local bakery which was light and tasty. My partner had an oak smoked salmon sandwich with the salmon sourced from a smokery in South Uist. The owner was friendly and charming and spent time with us explaining some of the local attractions. Absolutely first class!

We were looking for somewhere for a light lunch, and how fortunate we were to find Brechin's. Small but with a fantastic ambience, highlighted by the many musical instruments and the vast collection of sheet music displayed around the walls. The menu offers an amazing choice; every item home made and cooked to order with ingredients sourced locally. Don't expect fast food - if you are in a hurry go somewhere else, but our advice would be to make sure that you have time to relish the atmosphere and enjoy delicious food. The coffee is good as well! Licensed and open Monday to Saturday from 10.30, we wholeheartedly recommend.

We chatted a bit with the owner - very friendly. They have some wonderful memorabilia and sheet music all over and even have some instruments for sale. The owner was telling us that he does repairs and sales online as well, but put a few items in the restaurant as a result of local interest. Very cute place with great food, a little off the beaten path, and totally worth the quick walk.

Popped into Brechin's for a coffee. We ended up having food as well, as the food they brought out for another table looked and smelled great. I opted for the Ayrshire bacon and egg roll - fantastic. The roll was packed with crispy, tasty Ayrshire bacon and the fried egg was delicious. all freshly prepared. My dining companions had the South Uist smoked salmon ( would be good to have Bute Smoked Salmon) and cream cheese sandwich which was quite different in that the salmon and cheese had been blended together and served with bread with salad. very tasty. The coffee that they serve is excellent - in the correct sized cups and not boiling hot. The service was very good and quick.

On 17th October, myself and three others went to Brechins for a meal and music night. So as the restaurant only does these as and when, let's cover the music first. Tim, the owner is an exceptional musician whose skills cover brass, woodwind, strings and keyboards. In fact, the first time I ever heard Tim on the keyboard, I commented that should I win the lottery I would simply pay him to sit in the corner tinkling the ivories all day long. Anyway, his ad hoc Jazz evenings consist of Tim on keyboard and Anna Harrison on vocals. Together, they are a delight. They perform for approximately one hour towards the end of the meal. Now, the food. These musical evenings are a set price meal with two offerings each for starter, main and pudding. The food is very good home cooking, portions are generous and the wine list is well priced and well chosen. I would highly recommend these evenings. I have been to several and the just keep getting better. A balm to the soul, both gastronomically and musically.

We regularly visit Rothesay in our boat, sometimes staying overnight or as yesterday just a passing visit. We have eaten at most of the restaurants except Brechin's - I don't know why - probs habit!Yesterday we called into Rothesay at about 11.00. We were starving- sun shining and fresh sea air- very unusual this year! We called in one of our usual cafes advertising breakfast, lunch snacks etc. unfortunately as we entered the empty cafe we were asked if we wanted food as they had finished breakfast and would not start lunch until after 12.00, given this we declined the offer to have coffee and went for a wander. We had passed Brechin's many times but on passing we noticed their menu stated food all day, we entered the small but tastefully presented restaurant and were immediately welcomed, they had a free 4 person table which we sat in. The host (rather than server) came over, established that we wished food and immediately told us of the soup of the day and specials. My daughter (v fussy) had the American pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup, they were freshly made, large and superbly made the pancakes were excellent as was the properly crispy bacon and the heated maple syrup. Our other daughter had the soup and sandwich combo, tomato and veg soup and tuna mayo brown sandwich- well presented and delicious. My wide had the baked potato with tuna and onion, with a solid with olives, again this had a rave reception. I had the "pie of the day" which was steak in ale with lovely mash and freshly baked pastry, this was one of the best I have tasted. We had a selection of drinks (hot and cold), but non alcoholic as we were undertaking a lengthy passage on our boat when we finished, all were nice and were well served by our attentive (but not too attentive!) host. The bill was very reasonable and the atmosphere was very laid back and pleasant with a decor largely music related. We will be back soon! Happy to strongly recommend!!

My missus and I had had an early start and a long drive to the island and, in appalling weather conditions, just needed a plate or two of simple, filling, tasty fare. And that's exactly what we got. Tim was very friendly and chatty and when I wanted half and half of two starters it wasn't a problem at all. Lovely homemade salmon mousse (with a couple of crevettes thrown in!) and houmous washed down with a bottle of local Red Ale set the comfort tone. My wife's steak and my steak and ale pie were fantastic. The steak in particular was one of the best we'd tried and was cooked perfectly. A tremendous little find that is a bit cramped and the furniture is a bit dated but the grub and the service far outweighed any minor gripes. Would definitely go back if it was closer to home.

Our visit on a not-too-busy Good Friday was rather disappointing. Food felt rather industrial - the sort of food I could expect to get from a fast food joint, not one of the top rated restaurant on the island. the mushroom Wellington had an indistinguishable filling, garlic mushroom too creamy and heavy and soup resembled very little flavour of the vegetables that it was supposed to contain. Service was even worse; wine price was simply misleading: there was a fixed price meal including a bottle of the house wine, but we were told we can order any wine and the price will be adjusted. The wine we ordered was priced at 1£ more than the house wine, but lo and behold, in the bill we were charged a full price for it, not the gap between its price and the price of the house wine. When we complained the waiter refused to adjust the bill. I can imagine a reply here trying to justify it as a misunderstanding or miscommunication; this is simply a case where a good and attentive service would take responsibility and provide clear information when taking the order, and take responsibility when a customer would point out his dissatisfaction. None of that happened here, the waiter arrogantly dismissed us saying "well thanks for pointing this out", in a condescending tone. The waiter was engaging in *very* long personal conversation with other tables while we were waiting for our ordered bottle of wine, with our food already on the table, or for paying the bill. I was quite disappointed, would never recommend this place and can only wonder why is it ranked so high in this town. The service and food standards on our visit were at best mediocre

Brechins is an absolutely fantastic place for coffee, lunch and (on Friday and Saturday) dinner. We went for a slap up three course meal on Saturday evening, and were made to feel very welcome the second we walked through the door. The walls are covered in music memorabilia and the background music was old school 1940s/1950s style, which was lovely. The seafood platter was delicious, the steak was said to be 'the best I've ever had' according to the person who had it (a great fan of steaks generally), and the sticky toffee pudding was heavenly -- totally delicious. They also have homemade ice cream (including rhubarb), which is lovely and silky. Highly recommended, go to Brechins!

We have only eaten here once, during a short break in Rothesay last weekend. We were attracted by the special offer of £35 for a meal for two with a bottle of wine. It turned out that our host (sorry, don’t know his name) was putting on a special concert that night. The excuse was it was St Patrick’s night, but actually I think that, as a fine jazz guitarist, he just enjoys playing to his customers. Another guitarist and mandolin player had been pressganged into service and together they played a mixture of Irish music and classic jazz tunes in the Django Reinhardt mode. Excellent entertainment! The food was pretty good too. One mark of a good meal is when you want to steal culinary ideas, and I certainly intend to try out our little starter pots of Brie, bacon and cranberries at home.Good food, good music and the wine perfectly drinkable too. This must have been one of the best nights we have spent in a restaurant for a quite a while. Recommended!

Today I was having a few internet issues back at the flat so I decided to pack my laptop in a water proof bag (it was pouring hard) and head off to the Brasserie @ Bridgend St. I was warmly welcomed by Tim and felt comfortable amongst the other customers, a lovely friendly atmosphere accompanied by excellent food, home made soup and filled roll just perfect on such a day. After a relaxing time and sending my important e-mails I left the cheery crowd and headed off in to the wet with a well fed, warm glow about me...aided by the glass of wine I expect!

My wife and I made a visit to Bute at the end of November this year the weather was cold but very sunny. Without doubt the highlight of our trip was Brechin's we tasted some of the best home cooking in years owner Tim was a great host while his lovely wife toiled in the kitchen, if you are planning a visit to this lovely island treat yourself to some great food we will certainly be back. cold food, cold space, try not to sit with your back against the window! Also dont complain as it seems as if its your fault when you mention anything! home made ice cream (if you can stand more cold) is just that; a bit non. We felt a bit incidental to the whole affair as a local couple were been showered with attention.... little did they know that we were new locals!

Agree with all the previous reviewers - this is a delight and well worth checking out. We just had soup and rolls but I am a "soup dragon" and very fussy . This passed every soup test - tasty, interesting recipe, good texture, hot, filling amount, tasty roll and butter - in fact it was the aroma of the soup that drew us in! Tea and coffee - perfect and nice touch with the wee biscuit. Did I say smart white tableware , interesting decor , ... could witter on but just visit it if you are in Rothesay - in fact go to Bute just to eat there.

Just returned from our trip to Bute. We found the restaurant on the welcome to Scotland guide (the only restaurant on the site in Bute!) As we live not far from the city of Brechin we were quite keen to try it out. The owner was very welcoming throughout. The restaurant/bistro is quite small but felt quaint and homely. There were 2 other tables in during our visit. We were served lovely bread as we waited for our meal. We had the seafood platter and garlic mushrooms for our starters followed by the lamb and salmon fillet with pesto and parmasn. All were delicious. We then shared home made sticky toffee pudding and homemade cherry icecream - yum!! All this, a large glass of wine and a lager for under £50 which we thought was very reasonable. The jazz music in the background was a nice touch although not our usual taste in music! The owner chatted away throughout the evening which was lovely. He provided us with a guide to Bute and info on the next jazz festival. I can't understand why a previous reviewer marked Brechins as terrible for having a chatty host?! We never felt bothered at any point. The only thing terrible about their review is the spelling!! Just shows we can't keep everybody happy. I would defiantly return to Brechins if and when I return to Bute and would recommend it to others.

Brechin's is small but bright. A husband and wife team run it. We had a delicious and reasonably priced lunch: home-made lasagne followed by home-made sticky toffee pudding (carefully made with molasses instead of golden syrup, and prunes instead of dates). Highly recommended.

We had a very good meal here and reading one of the other reviews we were expecting smaller portions however this was certainly not the case. The food was good and tasty and the wine list although limited had some good choices and we had an excellent cabernet sauvignon which was reasonably priced. The owner was very hospitable and it is obvious he is a real jazz fan, the background jazz music was very pleasant and easy to listen to. The only downside is that it is only open two evenings a week Friday and Saturday.

A very quirky place with the walls decorated in a jazz theme. We were very warmly welcomed and our order taken quickly. However, we only had an hour for lunch and we were pushed to eat it in that time. The restaurant was not busy but it still took nearly half an hour for our order to arrive. Since we had ordered jacket potatoes we thought that this was a long time to wait. Next time I go here I will make sure that I don't have to rush as the food, when it arrived, was delicious.

We went here for a Saturday night dinner. The food was OK, but unfortunately not upto the standard I was expecting after reading the other reviews. My husband ordered steak, which was overcooked and I ordered chicken, which was undercooked. And while I'm sure that if we'd complained, they would have replaced the food for us, if you're a half decent chef then cooking steak and chicken properly should be something you can get right first time- it shouldn't need 2 attempts. I also felt the food was rather over priced (the owner was discussing the Waterfront bistro, where the portion sizes are much bigger, and saying that it's better to get smaller portions of food so there isn't any wasted at the end. Fair enough, but smaller portions should be priced accordingly- the prices here were the same as, if not more than at the Waterfront). The service was good, but the food let it down, sorry.

I would like to thank Tim and Ann Saul and all the staff at Brechin's for the wonderful party the Restaurant hosted on the occasion of my Mother's 80th Birthday party back in April of this year. The menu selection was spot on, the food was first-class and the ambience and care and attention paid to us by all concerned was, as it always is when frequenting the establishment, of the highest quality. We were all made most welcome both regulars and visitors alike. Without exception, everyone that attended commented on what a great place it was.My father, who has been ill for a long time, was also able to attend the event thanks to the flexibility shown by the Brechin's team and the added entertainment provided by Tim, on his guitar, was a real treat! (Great Jazz musician as well as restaurant proprietor!!)My mother and all her family and friends loved the party, the food, the entertainment and the vino!! I would heartily recommend anyone visiting the Island to seek out Tim and Ann at Brechin's and visit even if only for Ann's custard tarts on a Saturday morning, with a great cappuccino!! But you shouldn't miss the lunches and evening meals/themed dinners - par excellence!!Great job Brechins - as always!!

Popped in for lunch while visiting Rothesay and for the first time ever, I scraped every morsel from my plate. The food was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. Brechin's is a real gem to visit. The decor is stunningly laid out in a jazz theme and the owner is also a jazz musician and was delightful to speak to. If you are visiting Rothesay, I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Brechin's Brasserie. I'll definitely be back for more!

Inside the old shop front is a buzzing atmosphere of locals, yachtsmen and retired tourists escaping from their packaged tours. Musical instruments and music sheets adorn the walls, while a simmering coffee machine exudes delicious aromas. Grab a corner table and absorb the atmosphere!

Last month my husband and I had a fantastic dinner at Brechin's. We chose the 'steak and bake' special offer of 2 starters, 2 main courses and a bottle of wine. - FANTASTIC value. I had smoked salmon mousse to start - very tasty - and my husband had garlic mushrooms which, although delicious, was more like a thick, creamy mushroom soup. Our steaks were excellent and cooked to perfection. All was washed down with a chilled bottle of house white. A super evening in a very atmospheric bistro.

Went here because it was #1 rated on Tripadvisor. In fact the proprietor takes these things seriously and encouraged us to provide (hopefully positive) feedback.Although we arrived towards the end of the lunch slot (door states open till 2.30) at no time did we feel hurried and the only downside was that two items were sold out - food being made fresh each day. It's not especially cheap but somehow that didn't matter as we all enjoyed our food. The "locally caught" haggis pizza was interesting and the only quibbble I had with my tomato soup is that there was a distinctly non-tomato taste about it (anchovy?) which was a little off-putting.The proprietor was busy taking bookings for the evening so I guess it's a locally popular place to eat. Various local traders and food suppliers seemed to be dropping in too, which also suggested good local connections. As an aside, we walked past the Waterfront (#4 in Rothesay as I write) afterwards. Although similar in many ways, we recoiled at their unwelcoming notices about children, and felt pleased we had a warm welcome at Brechin's.

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
