I don’t think I have enough space to fit this into 100 words! Unfortunately I have a medical problem for which I’ve been advised to stick to a “Fodmap” I thought I would never be able to go for dinner with my husband. I called the evening before when a very lovely member of the team asked me to email my food restrictions to her which she gave to Chef Lewis When we arrived for our booking we sat in the gorgeous lounge and was advised that the chef would come to speak to me. Chef Lewis sat with us and went through the menu. I chose to have a rib eye steak, chips, carrots and a lovely tomato salad. I was delighted the steak was melt in your mouth and cooked to perfection, it was all perfect. My husbands food was excellent too. We had a lovely Valentines dinner thanks to the fabulous caring team and fantastic Chef Lewis. We can’t put into words just how much we appreciated your time and for making it a special evening for us. We have booked a table for 5 people for Mother’s Day. No need for a menu for me, same again Lewis. 🥰 We have been to many restaurants all over the World and we have never received the outstanding service, care and attention we received from Chef Lewis and the rest of his team. Thank you once again. See you on Mothers Day 😘 I highly recommend this Brasserie!

Came here for Christmas lunch and Norton House did not disappoint. The service was excellent and so professional and the food was outstanding. The Christmas pudding was particularly delectable. So much food, I couldn't finish and we still had a huge box for afternoon tea to take home. If there is a restaurant in heaven, this would be it.

Visited as part of a post-Christmas family get together, with grandparents and kids. One minor but important issue would be the fact that we thought we had booked it over the phone but having received no confirmation we called back and it transpired no booking had been made. Luckily they got us in. The food, service and surroundings were excellent. We were in the airy & bright Brasserie area. Reasonable value and certainly everyone enjoyed it. £6.50 for a pint of soda & lime felt excessive compared to the cost of everything else, but all in all, an excellent and tasty Sunday lunch!

I took a friend to lunch at Norton House after having had so many lovely meals there over the past 10 years. What a let-down it was, with a very reduced, uninspired but pricey menu, poor service, uncleared tables everywhere and a total lack of atmosphere. A very plain cheese sandwich, a tasty but tiny burrata salad, 2 coffees and one medium glass of wine came to just short of £50! I asked for some bread to bolster my small salad and was duly presented with two slices of white, unappetising sliced bread, no butter. The staff were pleasant but not very efficient and when I checked if my coffee was decaff as I'd ordered, the waiter had no clue. This used to be a good place for a lovely lunch but it appears to have undergone a radical downturn - what a shame...

All of the food we ordered here (a party of 7) was really good. I had the haggis, neeps and tatties, and while that may be an acquired taste for some, this is a really good place to acquire it. We were three generations, and all enjoyed it very much. In terms of cost i would describe it as middle range, but the quality was well above that.

My two friends and I attended a spa day at the Norton on 13/10 at a cost of £237 each. We thoroughly enjoyed our spa experience. The beauticians were all lovely and the treatments were amazing. The only downside was lunchtime. In the morning our lunch hour slot was agreed between 1300-1400 hours and our menu selection was taken at this time. When we attended in the eating area at 1300 the staff didn’t seem to know where to put us. We had to ‘hang about’ til someone came along that knew what to do with us. At 1330 we had to chase up our lunch and remind them we had treatments booked at 1400. Our lunch thereafter came out straight away and was delicious, however we were running out of time for our dessert. Staff did suggest we could come back for our dessert after our treatments but this would’ve been at 1600. We got our dessert at 1355 and had to scoff it and rush for our treatment. Luckily we were not getting massages! I appreciate that staff were busy, mostly with afternoon teas but we all feel that this service was very disappointing for how much money we paid to relax for the day. We were made to feel like an inconvenience and were told the chef was too busy with afternoon teas and was struggling to get us our food - the food that was preordered in the morning!!! I have provided this feedback to the Norton who have not even acknowledged my email. Very disappointed with their customer service and this experience will put us off going back in the future.

Took a work colleague here for Christmas lunch. Place was empty. Opted for the fixed price 3 course option. Terrine starter (was Ok) followed by a very disappointing plate of reformed turkey and what could be described as a small handful of veg including the smallest brussels I've ever seen. Plate was swimming in gravy. A real let down. Dessert wasn't that great either, a strudel I believe. Not tempted to go back any time soon and £75 in to the bargain. Service was a little slow.

The restaurant is nicely appointed and has a nice relaxed feel. The menu isn’t extensive; however, still more than enough to choose from and overall a good choice. The mushroom and goats cheese tarte tartin for starter was small but delicious, the muscles come on Papeete (in paper)...makes them slightly difficult to navigate and eat!! Really delicious but sauce lacked seasoning. Main courses of chuck eye steak and belly pork were cooked very well and seasoned to perfection; however the side of chips were supposed to come with truffle and Parmesan. This was corrected once pointed out. The Stilton sauce that accompanied the steak was slightly insipid and lacked depth. The service was generally good, although had to ask to see wine menu, had to ask for water to accompany the meal and had to ask for order to be corrected...maybe could have been slightly more attentive which would improve the experience. We would return and we would say overall good value...could be very very good with some tweaks!

We decided to give the restaurant a try as we were staying at hotel. The food and drink service was very slow, almost an hour to get some burgers. The worst part of the experience was when I ordered a glass of white wine. I think the glass had come out of the dishwasher and it sat on the counter for a while warming the wine before coming to table...wine was warm and not drinkable. Politely asked for a new glass, second glass comes back, no colder. I was just going to drink it but husband tried it and was like no way. Third time, better, but really not correct temp for white wine. Waiter is really sweet and at the end of the day, no big deal right?? I'll just drink it. Big deal is that the restaurant manager comes over (Mark) and instead of apologizing proceeds to tell me off that I am wrong and don't know about the correct temperature for wine. Wow...I was shocked as he stood there and belittled a customer (especially as we had been nothing but polite). It basically ruined our night. I did complain to the night manager, he was apologetic, but I don't feel that we got any resolution (they even charged for the infamous glass of wine).I would really recommend avoiding this restaurant unless you want to be told off by the staff.

Our family were at the Brasserie to celebrate a birthday on Sunday 15th. We were a large party of about 18 so we're in large room attached to brasserie. This unfortunately meant that it appeared we were forgotten about whilst other diners were served. On arrival I had to ask twice for drinks while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. Only to cancel the order later as nothing had arrived or been prepared, by the barman with the black eye, and we were going through to our table I can honestly say the service was terrible until David Brown came through and took over looking after us. Thank goodness for him. I will add we had no issue with the food which was lovely however the original service took away some of our enjoyment. Bad show Norton House Hotel. Not sure if I'll be back.

My husband & I have eaten here at least half a dozen times over the past 18 months and usually this is a foolproof dining experience. However, our lunch on Friday left a lot to be desired, and I'm afraid we won't be rushing back. Firstly, only two other tables were occupied in the entire restaurant, which is somewhat unusual for this place; one of those was a single diner and the other table was clearly an event planning business meeting. We were there for over an hour between 12:15 and 1:30pm...strange that it was so quiet. The initial thing we noticed was that there was a very unpleasant odour in the restaurant which resembled an ammonia type smell. Anyhow, we ordered. I had a large wine and my husband had a soda with lime. We only ate one course; for me it was gluten free fish and chips and for my hubby it was steak pie. My fish was REALLY small but tasty. The chips on the other hand, tasted of a strange oil taste. My husband tried them too, and confirmed that they were not nice. I ate some of them (because I was so hungry and the fish was too small to fill the smallest of children...) but left some too. The steak pie was rich and tasty, but my husband commented that the puff pastry topping was exceptionally thin and crumbled away to nothing the second he attempted to cut it up. It was also very bland. The mashed potato tasted of the same oily taste as my chips and was equally unpleasant. We didn't complain as there was little that could have been done to salvage the situation and we don't like sending food back to the kitchen regardless of the prestige of the dining establishment. We had no starter or dessert, so we cannot comment on those. To be fair, we just wanted to get away from the odour of the place. On leaving, we checked the £46+ lunch bill (for one course remember), to find that a £4+ 'discretionary' service charge had been added (10%). Bitter was the taste that left. Incidentally, the blonde lady who seated us and appeared to be in charge of the restaurant and bar that day, reprimanded two girls in front of customers. She wasn't overly loud doing this, but she did it in plain sight of everyone in the bar area and we knew it was for them returning from their break later than they should, so it was audible enough. I hope this place gets back on track soon as we've had some very pleasant stays and meals here, and we'd like to think this is merely a blip that will be addressed swiftly.

We received a voucher for Christmas for one night, dinner, breakfast and the use of the spa. We booked our visit well in advance. The Brasserie was lovely, loverly decor, a little on the dark side, was a beautiful night and all the shutters were half closed and low lighting. On arrival the staff were very attentive. We were shown to our table. I felt like i was also joining the two other tables on either side of us- far too close together. I could hear both their conversations. The menu was varied and suited a lot of tastes. The starters- pate & chorizo & bacon salad were lovely, the best dishes of the meal. We ordered the burger and a ribeye steak for our mains. We knew there was a supplement for the steak as this was stated on the menu however no indication of how much. We waited a long time for our mains but this didn't bother us as it was busy and we completely understood.I asked for my steak medium rare. To me it came well done. I did have to say as it was really chewy. This was sorted out right away. a full apology and Siobhan came over she had taken the supplement AND the side orders off our bill. I was given another steak pronto! it was cooked perfectly. I was asked twice if it was ok and it was. Puddings were quite different and had a lot going on. We loved the sorbets and toasted marshmallow. Very different and imaginative. We had to sign for our dinner even although we had dinner included we got drinks etc. Our bill would of however came to nearly £96 not including our sides and steak supplement which was kindly removed. We'd of been really disappointed having to pay nearly £100 for what we got, the meal was just average. We aren't fussy, we love food but it just wasn't quite there for us. There was also what we thought a very cheeky service charge of £8.50ish added on. We have never, ever had a compulsory service charge added on to any meals in Scotland especially after dinner was paid for in full by the voucher. I understand adding a service charge on for groups of say 8 or more but it was only the two of us. It really angers us as we feel we should decide how good the service and food was not the hotel and we should decide how much to pay. For two beers, a rose wine spritzer and the service charge it was over £25. The service change was 10% of our bill which was meant to be included in the voucher. I have read the voucher over and theres no mention of it. Its not the fact we wouldn't of left anything, we always do, its the fact it was added on and expected not suggested. I strongly suggest you make this as a suggestion Norton House instead of compulsory especially for people with vouchers. We also had breakfast here, the breakfast was FANTASTIC! We couldn't fault it. There was so much on offer, everything you could ask for even no sugar jams. No service charge added on here funnily enough and we were waited on more than at dinner time. Due to the fact the tables were so close, i had to send my dinner back, the food was just in our opinion average at dinner and the service charge we gave the restaurant a rating of 3 which is such a shame as we really wanted to give more, the hotel its self is just beautiful and luxurious.

Our first time to this hotel/brasserie/wedding reception venue. We took advantage of a Groupon 2 for 1 deal. Booking a table was easy & faultless and service was very good throughout. But all you really need to know is that the food was terrific. The chef(s) show pride in the food, that's obvious with the presentation and the lovely tastes. 2 courses is all we got with the Groupon deal, but that was more than enough & I hate going away from a nice lunch feeling hungry still; no danger of that! My mackerel starter was cooked perfectly and not one bone was evident. Beautifully presented and a pleasure to eat. My partner had the cured salmon and was equally impressed, although a bit of plate-envy of my mackerel! For main course I can thoroughly recommend the rump of lamb that I chose. What can I say? It is the best lamb I have ever had. Flavoursome, succulent, still slightly pink but wonderfully cooked. I savoured every mouthful & as a picky meat eater I found no reason not to eat every single morsel. The puréed pea concoction that the lamb sat upon was also delicious and very different to anything I've tried before. It made a lovely combination. In so many restaurants a side order comes as a minor disappointment as mostly see the meagre offerings delivered in a tiny bowl, but we were pleasantly surprised with a generous bowl of honey-glazed carrots that were sweet and just crunchy enough to be perfect. My partner's Sea Bass (yes, I know, two fish courses for her!), was delicious too, with perfectly crisped skin and a delicately cooked fillet although there was more plate envy for my lamb dish :)We left full & happy. Whether we would go at full price is debatable, but we will certainly go again if the Groupon deal comes up again. The only dilemma will be whether to try something different or go for the divine lamb rump again. Book a table, (have the lamb!), but either way just delight in the taste of wonderful quality meat & fish cooked to perfection & presented with pride.

My husband and I had a delicious lunch here on Monday afternoon. The service was excellent and surroundings lovely. I had the mackerel, beautifully served with rhubarb. My husband had piping hot minestrone soup . Next course was tender steak and ale pie with a crispy topping, served with tasty veg. My husband had a huge battered haddock served with homemade chips, mushy peas and a small bowl of homemade tartare sauce. To finish with we had delicious sticky toffee pudding with gingerbread ice cream in a brandy basket. The icecream was amazing and could have been served as a pudding on its own. Will definitely be back .

We ate here as we were staying at Norton House. We had one cocktail and one glass of wine with dinner. I opted for the steak & ale pie and my friend had the fish & chips. Perfectly fine for what we had. No desserts though as we were quite full from our main course.

We had a small family gathering on the occasion of our Grandson's funeral, and were given a private room and two waiters to cater for our needs. The service was excellent, so courteous, efficient and unobtrusive. Our selection of food was very varied, but everything was beautifully served and very tasty.. refreshments were always being offered, but in such an unnoticeable way.Although it was a time of great sadness, the staff and atmosphere of Norton House made it so much easier to bear.We are most grateful to everyone concerned. Thank you.

Went for a lunch with 3 work colleagues - restaurant looks lovely but we were "greeted" by a member of staff who looked like he didn't want to be there and he showed us to our table. He immediately took our drinks order which was wrong when it was delivered to the table. After more than 15 minutes we had to go and ask him to come and take our food order. 2 of us ordered burgers, and we weren't asked how we would like them cooked even though we were paying £16 each for them. Then we had to wait for ages on our food coming. When it eventually did arrive, one had to be sent back as it was cold. The 2 burgers were warm not hot. A replacement dish did arrive 15 minutes later after everyone else had finished. We then sat for about 10 minutes with our finished plates on the table and eventually had to ask for somebody to come and clear it and give us our bill - we had been there over an hour at this point. We tried to give some feedback on the poor experience but the waiter wasn't interested. I've no idea what the problem was as there seemed to be plenty staff and the restaurant was less than half full. Overall a very disappointing experience. Probably won't be back which is a shame as I used to go here a lot.

To be absolutely fair to the restaurant I do understand that it was Boxing day and we were a large group - however the service was lacklustre at best. We were seated for around 10 minutes before any orders were taken, and drinks orders were taken after food orders. They then took so long to be served that we had no wine or soft drinks at all with our starters (luckily I'd asked for jugs of table water as soon as we arrived). We had ordered 2 soft drinks along with our wine but had to ask 4 times - and eventually go up to the bar ourselves before these arrived, which seemed ridiculous. The food was tasty and they were very good about amending portion sizes for us where required, but the drinks situation really put us off which is a shame as we have come here a couple of times at this time of year. Most disappointingly there was no apology re the length of time taken for the drinks to be served - and no offer of taking them off the bill or any similar gesture. There were a couple of friendly staff members but the lack of warm service was very off-putting. We felt as though they resented our presence towards the end of the meal - even though the slow service was the reason we were sitting at lunch for over 2 hours! A bit disappointing for a special family meal.

Recently enjoyed a lunch for two in this contempary styled restaurant. Plenty to choose from on a varied menu.We were able to relax and chat without being hurried. The location of the hotel is great if you want to get away from town and there is plenty car parking. Lovely driveway and spacious grounds make for a bit of peace and quiet, yet Edinburgh Airport is only a short distance away. We would definitely return, perhaps even just for coffee or afternoon tea, something to suit most diners.i

This is a review for the bar food but perhaps it is the same chef(s) as the restaurant? Now a club sandwich isn't difficult or decadent, but a good one is a joy and memorable. Norton House has gone through a good few owners and clearly many transitions since our last visit to this establishment a few years back. All the changes worth it. This is a place that has gone all out to do things the right way. Decor, Ambience, Cleanliness, Staff, Car Parking, Price, tick, tick, tickety, tick tick. What a pleasure as a diner to take your place at the table knowing so much effort has gone into every detail of the place. It's hard to find fault with it. OH and the food - Sunday lunch 3 course under £20 mouthwatering traditional fayre executed to meet the exacting standards of us jade diners. Looking forward to returning the Norton House and soon.

My friend and I had lunch in the Brasserie on 15th April and we are still talking about the beautiful meal we had. I had the Harissa baked hake and it was just perfect especially with the different flavours and textures of the accompaniments. My friend had Toulouse sausage and again the plate was dressed with amazing flavours and textures. For dessert we both had the Toffee Parfait and again so much thought had been put in to producing a compliment of flavours and different textures. We have both dined in four and five star hotels and I can say this meal was outstanding. The surroundings are very pleasant and relaxing and the service was perfect A truly pleasurable experienced

Booked for Easter Sunday lunch - would have been nice to know it was a set menu when we booked. Staff were very attentive and we got off to a good start, delicious caesar salad and fish cake starters. The men enjoyed their roast beef with all the trimmings but unfortunately our salmon and vegetables were swimming in oil, just didn't work at all. I was looking forward to the pak choi but it was limp and oozing oil, as were the green beans and other veg around the plate. Decided to pass on dessert but happily accepted a cream egg instead. Maybe we just made the wrong choice and we would likely go back again some time in the future thanks to great customer service.

The Norton House Hotel is situated on the Western outskirts of Edinburgh, fairly close to the Airport. However there is a fairly long tree lined drive from the main road to the hotel which makes transport an essential for visiting this restaurant. The Brasserie is one of several dining options at the Norton House. The brasserie is fairly large and is well set out with ample space between tables.Although not extensive there was a good choice on the menu. The staff were very pleasant and the service was good. The food was well cooked but there were a few issuesStarters - Chicken Parfait very good Belly Pork cooked differently to what I expected and lacking in taste.Main Course - Chicken dish, tasty with a very nice white sauce Rump of Lamb, well cooked with generous portion of lamb but rather short on Potatoes and vegetables.Deserts. - Apple cake, very disappointing and would not order again.Overall a nice meal and reasonable value. After the meal we had our coffees in the lounge area which was a nice relaxing area to sit after the meal, a definite plus.

Attention to detail and friendly. From 15.00 the service got sloppy, lack of attention to the little things (such as sticky glasses for our evening liqueurs), mistake on the bill, the wrong tonic water with a gin order.Whilst these are not deal breakers and we will be back, these are small things that an establishment, like Norton House, should not tolerate.I will be back for the food was truly lovely and I have yet to experience the Spa :-)

We stayed overnight at Norton House but could not get into the gourmet restaurant (our fault for not booking) so ate dinner at the Brasserie. Bad choice.Food reasonably cooked but tasteless. Soup piping hot but tasteless. Both my wife and I tasted it then left it.I had the special fish with nicely presented vegetables and sauce, but again tasteless. I did not know the fish but was told it was thick white similar to cod when it was thin and fishy tasting so again I left it. My wife's fish and chips were good (at Bp13 for a basic Scottish dish they should be) and she shared half with me. The coffee was good.Service was friendly, enthusiastic but not professional (like it was trainee night)As most of my meal was left uneaten it would have been poor value at half the price.Breakfast the following morning in the brasserie, included in the room rate, was good. Sad as this is a pleasant convenient hotel to use before flying back to the US and last year had an exceptional gourmet restaurant.

Rarely ever do I not leave a tip, but here I couldn't help. Not a single time did anyone offer service without being asked to. We had a 8:15 reservation and were initially seated in the lounge. We had to stop a waiter to order drinks. After 15 minutes we asked on the status of our reservation because most table in the restaurants seemed empty. Response "oh! you want to order?" They took our order in the lounge then five minutes later moved us to our table. No water or bread offered. Again, we had to flag down a waiter to order wine. There were five or six waiters running around like chicken with their head cut off, and apparently none of them "owned" our table. Nobody checked in to see if we were enjoying our meal or wanted to order anything else. When we ordered two ports for dessert, only one was brought. I'm giving two stars because the dressing for the Caesar salad was actually excellent, nice mustardy and with juicy anchovies. The chicken on top on the other hand... Dead. Tasteless. A blob of something that looked liked meat but could have been flavored tofu or what. Fish and chips: 75% batter, 25% fish. All in all, very disappointing.

Steht nirgends. Also am Tresen bestellt. Es dauerte 50 Minuten für "fast food". Alles etwas klebrig, keiner hat gefragt, ob man noch etwas trinken möchte. Fish u Chips waren naja, Burger war ok. Insgesamt so gar nicht unser Ding.
