Brasserie and Bar at Malmaison - Oxford in Oxford

We were staying at the Malmaison and were attracted by the 50% steak night offer on Thursday evenings. The meal was superb - the tuna tacos starter was excellent and the steaks couldn't have been better. Very pleasant service and a bargain at 50% off steak prices as long as you order a 2nd course. If only we lived nearby!

I'd like to commend Sam for his exceptional service during our meal at Radisson Blu Oxford on Sunday. His attentiveness, warmth, and professionalism greatly enhanced our dining experience, making it truly memorable. Sam's ability to make guests feel valued and welcome is commendable. He is a remarkable asset to your team. Thank you, Sam, for a wonderful evening.

Adrean was fantastic!! So welcoming, attentive and I have a dairy allergy and he was all over it and went the extra mile to check everything I ordered was safe for me. The food was excellent! The best scallops I have ever had and the cocktails were delicious too.

Delicious food with great understanding of allergens. Dominic was extremely helpful and informative, he was able to advise alternatives if what I had chosen contained allergens.

Adrean was absolutely outstanding in Chez Mal nothing was a problem at all went above and beyond his duties. Very helpful,full of smiles,well mannered,and so efficient/knowledgable and a total and utter asset to Malmaison Oxford. Not the best.. Below average on most things, suggest keep away from the Calamari (unless you're partial deep fried weetabix), the soup , well with a dollop of Bargie - really !More positive, the chicken was very good, the house wine was good and water for the table came quickly .. If your on a budget and not too fussy .. this is the place for you.

I actually work here (in the housekeeping department) and I came to redeem my benefit for being in the company for six months, the service was great, the food was great and the environment and the ambience were top notch. I am glad I attended and the guest I brought kept on rehashing how delicious the food was and how impressed he was by the presentation when he had a glance at other people’s foods and even ours so all round it was a lovely experience attending and being on the other side ie being a guest.

Visited for dinner Friday of New Year’s Eve weekend. The gentleman greeting us and showing us to the table and suggesting food and drink choices was a delight. He made our night chatting to us and was so interesting- he was looking forward to travelling more this new year and was kind to suggest trying the Parmesan chips and various cocktails. We enjoyed a leisurely meal (two courses plus two cocktails each) that came to £55 each - a bargain for the quaint location, fabulous customer service and delicious food We had a little stroll around the hotel main areas too for some photos - a beautiful place

Overnight stay in this iconic hotel We have stayed here 4/5 times over the preceding few years Never been disappointed with the food or hotel This time we had the evening meal. Cooked to Perfection Fillet beef and the accompanying salad etc If I was to find fault and be very picky I would suggest a choice of green veg and slightly less sea salt in the seasoning Overnight stay was a little airless and woke up several times too hot and dehydrated. No windows were able to be opened Breakfast was included in our stay and was very poor Sausage was of poor quality and was served pink as was the black pudding They had run out of orange juice and didn’t have any tomato juice either. Surely the bar had some? Bloody Mary etc. Apparently no So to summarise: Great evening but brought right down to earth this morning. Sad to say

Went for my husbands 50th birthday. When booking the staff said they would make it extra special for him! They did absolutely nothing! We went at 8 and was told 4 dishes were unavailable as had run out. During taking our order then went to 5 dishes run out! They had very young inexperienced waiters who didn’t have a clue. Luckily my husband enjoyed his steak but the rest of us found the food average considering the price! We did complain and got a mere 10 percent of the bill £30!!!! Nothing else was offered. For a 50 th bitterly disappointed and embarrassed I booked and took my family to the disorganised and averrated restaurant!

We had the best stay at Malmaison Oxford. We went to the bar for the evening, the Barman was just brilliant, I didn't get his name but he made the best Pina Colada I've ever had. He was chatty but not at all intrusive. He had a good knowledge of the wines.We chatted to him about the history of the hotel etc. We also ate dinner which was lovely and our waiter was also great and happy to chat and answer our questions about the hotel. Thanks guys for making the evening special

I cannot fault kasam, Marcos and Vera’s service from the bar. They all made so well welcome and nothing was too much trouble. A real credit to the malmaison family.

The restaurant was compact. The food was excellent and the service good. It was not cheap of course. However the beer was served in "Schooners" = 0.75 of a pint, but at a full pint price!

We have just got back from our overnight stay at this hotel. It was quirky and full of history! Every corner you turned there were informative and fascinating signs telling you about the hotel and prison. It is well located, close to the City centre....

Los menús estaban en línea, gel de manos por todas partes.Tuvimos un camarero fantástico llamado Dominic, fue excelente, muy amable y eficiente. Pedimos vino y bacalao y curry muy bueno y buen tamaño de la porción. Teníamos postre y Dominic se las arregló para conseguirnos un postre del menú de especiales del día anterior, pudín de caramelo pegajoso.Es un gran restaurante con evidencia de su uso anterior como zona de llegada de prisioneros. Group of 10 of us visited the brasserie for afternoon tea.Unfortunately we discovered pieces of glass/plastic in our food.This was highlighted to the staff straight away. When leaving we were told that management would be in contact. Nobody from Malmaison made contact. I then phoned up on a number of occasions and was told the same thing each time. That the deputy manager was away and a member of the management team would be in contact. I am still awaiting this. Very poor management from Malmaison.

For the price and location you could argue the Afternoon Tea is value for money and it was ‘ok’But we were somewhat left underwhelmed- we just found most items quite plan and quite dry. The scones especially were tough and rated of baking powder. What looks like delicious pink milkshake tastes like a basic yogurt. Cakes were alright but nothing special.A nice place worth the visit but suggest you try other food.

I went for afternoon tea for my friend's birthday treat. We arrived and waited at the till in the brasserie, where a waiting was tapping a screen. He completely ignored us for 5 minutes, no "I'll be with you in a minute'. When he finally greeted us, we were told our table wasn't ready and to take a seat at the bar. The bar was full and we couldn't get a drink. When our table was ready we sat and waited for 15 minutes, nobody came to take our order, we had to call a waiter over. We ordered two afternoon teas. The waiter then came back and said they didn't have any Earl Grey tea. Strange for a big hotel chain. The food arrived, looked very nice but the scones were cold, rock hard and dry, barely edible. The smoothie and burger were nice. Nobody checked on us, nobody came to clear our plates away after we had finished. We had to wave a waiter over to order more drinks and we had to wave a waiter over to get the bill. Would I go again. No.

Really looked forward to having afternoon tea here with my daughters for part of my birthday weekend. Waiting staff pleasant enough but knew nothing about the food they were serving! When the food was brought out nothing was described to us, usually when having afternoon tea the waiter lets you know what you each item is. One of our party is a vegetarian and her food was just placed on the left side of the platter, right next to the non vegetarian food! Very strange food, there was a small bread roll filled with what I think was chicken, pleasant but dry. A wrap which I couldn’t identify the filling, a prawn cocktail which was pretty good and a mini burger which was nice. Coffee cake was ok but dry, a fruit tart was ok. There was a strange curdled yoghurty drink in a miniature milk bottle??? a tasteless jelly which may have been rose flavoured. The scones were basically inedible, very hard and heavy, worst ones I have tasted. We were asked how everything was a few minutes after being served and we said all was ok, we had only eaten the burgers which were fine. No one came and asked if we needed anything else, we were just left to get on with it . The staff who served our food were not there when we left so couldn’t see the point of saying anything. We paid the service charge as it didn’t say it was discretionary. The lift was out of order as was one set of loos. Would I visit again? No, which is a shame as it is a quirky building but food was awful.

Cosy restaurant with good food. We loved the selection of food on the menu. They have vegetarian options and also gluten-free is no problem. The waiter Carlos was polite and attentive and we thank him for his service.

Stayed in the hotel and ate here. The service was not the best the Staff were unsure as to what was available from each menu the food arrived after long waits the Juis for one meal arrived after the meal was eaten. However when we did get the food it was well cooked warm and of good quality.

Sorry to say that the service wasn't great. Waited at the bar for half hour to be served. Not even any staff looking at me to notice I was There, a sorry I will be with u soon is better than nothing. I could see how busy thay were. But not to be noticed or a nod to say I have been seen . Customer service come on . I work in tbe same Industry and know how busy it gets . But staff doint seem to be trained to even let customers know thay have been noticed come on .it's not hard to say give me a min I will be with u . It makes a great bar tender to notice these things. And keep customers happy. Lack of training comes to mind. But when I did get served the young man serving was very polite and acomidating. Didn't get his name sorry no name badge. But after I got my drink I went away happy.

We were lucky to find this restaurant for drinks only, having checked with various staff members, who directed us to Cell 2, where other guests were finishing their Christmas lunch. It took ages for someone to come to take our order for drinks and, as we were advised we could order bar food, we ordered some nibbles. Another 10 minutes later, we were told there was no bar food available. The drinks arrived after another 10 minutes. After which point, we never saw the waiter again. The hovering manager kept glancing over at us. We asked him for the bill. We never saw him again. 20 minutes later, we got up and looked for a way to pay. They didn’t have the bill available. The lady behind the bar started telling off a young chap about it, whom we had not served us at all. Very disappointing experience. They charged us for the wrong beer and the refund for this did not go through. Embarrassing as we had guests from abroad.

Recently revisited after being invited back from a disastrous visit earlier in the year. This time all was almost faultless but one could not help feel that they knew who we were and why we were there! Anyhow, on this showing, the occasion was thoroughly enjoyable and could be positively recommended.

We have visited Mal M a few times over our visits to Oxford and always really enjoyed the service, food and atmosphere. We booked again for November. We arrived and were taken to our table. The first thing was how quiet it was which was a bit unusual for a Sat eve which dulled the atmosphere a bit - but that was ok. Unfortunately the service was actually quite poor, after being seated we waited ages to have the drinks request taken and then it was almost half an hour from being seated to getting the drinks. Sadly this poor service continued throughout.

We had friends visiting from Worcester so decided to try the brasserie at Malmaison.

Here for the Sunday stop over deal so have to spend £75 between the 2 of us.

Had the Sunday lunch which consisted of a buffet style starter which had lots of choice and really delicious. I then chose the pork belly, not enough gravy, but that was actually ok as it had a very strong bitter, sour taste to it which I completely drowned out the taste of the meat. The vegetables were delicious though. I then proceeded to find a really long hair underneath the pork though which was disgusting and made me stop eating immediately. I told the waitress and she was very apologetic and offered to bring me another plate but to be honest, I was quite put off at that point. So she offered me a complimentary dessert instead. Overall service was good but the hair in food experience put me off.

Champagne afternoon tea - what a treat! Faultless service. Very attentive but not intrusive. Excellent selection of savory and sweet food. They are happy for you to take anything spare home. Highly recommend and will go again.

Really disappointed. Had fairly high expectations given its location within a well regarded hotel. Service was mediocre, food poor. Took around 90 minutes to get our food and it wasn’t worth the wait. It came out cold and quality was poor. A real shame as it isn’t the cheapest place either. Better food and value in a high street chain restaurant.

This was a fairly impulsive visit, and having been turned away by a couple of venues who needed 24-hours' notice for afternoon tea reservations, were pleased we were able to book with just one hour's notice, although needed to drive a little further than planned. It took a while for us to be greeted and seated, and despite there being only 2 other tables occupied, took longer than it should have to place our order. Their full afternoon tea is £19.95, so not cheap, but not overly expensive either. It certainly looked impressive, but unfortunately proved to be style over substance. Of all things, it was the burger (!) that was the nicest item, as clearly this had been freshly prepared, as had the mini strawberry milkshake, which was pleasant. All the other elements were too cold or perhaps just defrosted, despite us having given them an hour's head-start. The scone is a key part of afternoon tea, but it had a tough, bready-texture, and the jam was clearly a cheap brand. The cakes were overly sweet: the lemon cupcake topping was fine, but the sponge too heavy. The homemade Battenburg was very disappointing, with the thinnest layer of marzipan appearing to have melted onto overcooked/stale sponge and the chocolate mousse again too sweet and very cloying (and I love chocolate!) - neither of these items looked anything like the pictures on their website! As by then we were all over-sweetened-out, we thought we'd take home the little cream-topped banoffee tarts, but they couldn't offer a cake box, just foil - this would've been messy so my daughter tried hers to make sure we weren't missing anything, and we weren't (and it's her favourite dessert!). The tea was served in nice, big teapots, so that's a redeeming feature, although the table for two a bit of a squeeze to fit everything on! As far as the service was concerned, the staff were pleasant enough, but didn't seem to notice we weren't having a great time. On asking for the bill, we weren't asked if everything was OK (at which point I would have given some feedback), hence this review. I hope they take it on board. In future I'll plan well ahead and ensure we take afternoon tea somewhere where they specialise in this, as I feel the elements would be more likely to be freshly made.

My wife and I, along with 13 other family members spent a very enjoyable evening at the Mal Maison hotel in Oxford. This included a special 80th birthday dinner for my father, with lots of family and a night spent in one of the quirky but luxurious rooms (formerly prison cells).

Stayed at the hotel so thought we would take advantage of the amazing setting! Restaurant itself is very nicely decorated although lacking aircon, it was far too hot and a little uncomfortable!

Came here for pudding and a few drinks after a disappointing lunch elsewhere. We both wished we’d found here for lunch as well. The chocolate brownie was well worth the £6.50 and the staff were very pleasant. We will be back.

We had booked online to come for Sunday brunch unfortunately found we had to cancel, rang the hotel twice with our reservation number but they couldn't find us. Then emailed out of courtesy but no reply. Shame it might have been lovely but unlikely to bother again due to hassle

We sat outside in the Exercise Yard and it was a lovely setting for a Saturday evening. The food, however, was ordinary - the "superfood" salad with pan fried halloumi was mainly broccoli and the halloumi was cold and not fried at all.

Myself and my parents came here for a fancy meal after my graduation. We are all vegan and saw the vegan menu with lots of options online so thought it would be a great choice, the menu offers a wide variety but unfortunately they didn't seem very prepared for anyone to actually order from it. Their 'balsamic provencale vegetables' consisted of a plate of roasted peppers (no other veg) with some watercress on top and a tiny bit of flatbread (which they only brought out when we pointed out it said it came with this on the menu) and they charged £12 for it which is just a rip off. My pasta dish was lovely but wasn't anything like what was described on the menu completely different veg. As for dessert I don't know how they managed to get away with putting a handful of strawberries and raspberries on a plate and charging £6 for it (calling it gourmet iced summer berries) and we had to again request the sauce that was meant to come with it and another dessert as they didn't bring it out to start with. The staff were all lovely it was a shame the kitchen seemed to let them down and there were so many mistakes. If you're going to have things on your menu you should be prepared to actually serve them as described or mention that you don't have all the right ingredients to do it as it is on the menu.

I took a friend for a special birthday treat and we had a lovely afternoon. Nothing was too much trouble, delicious food and tea. We both had the Mal Afternoon tea which was really fresh and good quality. We were not able to eat all the cakes and were provided with a box to carry out the extras.

Having recently stayed and dined at a Malmaison in another city, we thought we would give the Oxford Chez Mal a try for lunch on our day out there. We were not disappointed, the standard was just as high! Not knowing how popular the restaurant got at lunchtimes we reserved a table via their website which was extremely easy to do – no waiting for anyone to pick up the phone and there was a prompt email confirmation with a booking number. Although we booked for noon we arrived half an hour early but the staff on duty were welcoming and happy to accommodate us and take our order from the new summer Prix-Fixe Menu. They made careful note of my husband’s vinegar allergy but there was none anyway in his starter and main. The Spanish Charcuterie Slate was very imaginative and the grilled chicken breast very succulent and tasty. We had already acquired a Club Mal card at our previous Chez Mal (giving you 20 per cent discount for yourself and up to 5 friends) and this was readily accepted and acted upon when it came to bill time.

A pesar de ofrecer un menú vegano de té de la tarde cuando faltaban, faltaban varios de los artículos anunciados. Esto fue a pesar de la reserva previa y es un menú fijo. El servicio fue increíblemente lento a pesar del personal múltiple y el lugar estaba casi vacío. Nos ofrecieron una bebida de cortesía como compensación por el mal servicio, pero en lo que respecta a los artículos que faltaban, todo lo que se ofreció fueron repeticiones de artículos que ya estaban en el plato, uno de los cuales ya no había comido ya que no me gustaba.

Habíamos reservado el té de la tarde con antelación y todos estábamos ansiosos por el tratamiento. ¡Que decepcion! Nuestro camarero era desinteresado y desinteresado. Parecía que estaba cansado de la vida misma.

On a hot sunny day in Oxford we were looking for an upmarket place with outdoor seating that would offer a late lunch. Malmaison seemed it would fit the bill. With high expectations in the beautiful outdoor surroundings we asked for menus.

We went for the brunch on Saturday, and the service was faultless both at the bar beforehand, and during the meal.

Fabulous experience in the converted jail. Excellent food with wonderful, professional service from start to finish.

Innovative cocktails and very good food (I had a steak that was perfect !). Good wine list by the glass and very good service. Also in a cool setting !!!

The menu is comprehensive yet simple. The food served was excellent and the service was impeccable. It is very good value for money. The staff had no problem accomodating our choices.

When I first stayed at Malmaison a few years ago, the breakfast was excellent. They had amazing waffles with bacon and syrup. In fact they were so good that I ordered them again when I returned to Oxford.

Had a fabulous lunch being served by the equally fabulous twins that are Patrick and Timor. Steak and frittes were lovely and the bottomless Prosecco just added to it all

We have visited several times before as this works as a really good meeting point for a friends' get together. We have always managed to arrange a private room which makes for a very relaxed lunch giving plenty if time to catch up. We all picked off the set menu. My other half enoyed his terrine; beef main course and chocolate dessert very much. I did however have a few issues with my choices. The winter salad looked pretty but as well as being sparse some elements weren't particularly tasty and the seafood chowder although looked pretty was luke warm. Thankfully the poached pear was amazing..beautiful flavours. Some of the staff of whom there seem to be quite a few appear quite cool in their attitude. Although we enjoyed our visit the picture was a little more mixed than when we've come before.

Toujours à la recherche d’un resto calme et sympa, nous avons jeté notre dévolu sur la brasserie de cet hôtel aux consonances françaises.

I recently visited with 2 other friends. We had travelled quite far to meet up for a special occasion and we hardly get to see each other. I booked a table online which I pointed out we required 1 x Gluten Free Afternoon tea, 1 x Dairy free and another normal. My email was not responded to, just an automatic booking confirmation. Therefore, I called to again confirm my request and check they could cater for DF and GF afternoon. I was assured, yes they could, they could even cater for vegans.

Great location and venue, fashionably elegant, great for a business dinner, dinner with friends or a loved one.
