A perfect little restaurant for a pre-theatre dinner. Very good food served in a charming setting. A varied menu with wonderful shellfish specials. A little gem of a bistro / pub in the heart of Oxford. Great food and welcoming staff. A nice range to the menu choices, all very tasty with daily specials. Mid range in pricing. Also the team to be praised for their intuition - noting our service order went astray leading to delays and disruption to our service, but they were apologetic, attentive and without prompt gave a satisfactory discretionary correction to our bill for the error. Nice to see this level of service.

Food was delicious, a very convivial atmosphere, nice decor. Staff were good until the end - I ordered dessert while my dinner guest ordered coffee. Coffee came & went; I thought dessert might have been forgotten - politely reminded the waiter I was waiting for dessert & he snapped back with a rude & patronising reply. What an ending to an otherwise nice meal. Left feeling really unhappy.

My friend and I came here impromptu one early evening; no booking and no expectations. We were fortunate that they accomodated us. We enjoyed our wine, homemade bread, oysters, lobsters amd chips and dessert. The service is the best service I have ever had here in Oxfordshire; they bit the service in The Ivy Oxford. Staff were professional and attentive. Atmosphere is excellent. Highly recommended. I brought my husband with me on the second time I came here. We both enjoyed our appetiser, main course, dessert and wine. I ordered sirlon steak and my husband opted for coq au vin. I tried steaks in different pubs and restaurant in Oxford and Abingdon and being a steak person only this restaurant passed my standard. The chef on-duty that night knows how to cook steak as per my preferred level of doneness. The others managed to ruin the beautiful cut of beef. I hope more cuts of beef will be available like chateaubriand and ribeye. And sauces like peppercorn and mushroom will be available in the future. Oh, coq au vin was nicely cooked as well. I could taste the flavour of the chicken and the red wine was not overpowering. I can’t wait to go back again.

Very nice restaurant with good service. Our first courses- octopus, terrine and snails were lovely. The main courses were variable. My daughter and I had the surf and turf which was spoilt by the Cafe de Paris butter, which contained orange zest that was not mentioned on the menu. It was served on top of the steak and over powered the meat. I have no idea why orange would ever be paired with beef, very odd and just didn't work. The lobster was very good, as were the accompaniments. My husband's steak was chewy and lacked flavour. Such a shame, as it had the potential to be a fabulous meal.

Disappointing. The waiter was very pushy and tactics were see through - kept filling glasses and asking if we wanted another bottle of wine. Delayed food . Everything was extra. The waiter said we would need sides with our mains because there was no veg, potatoes etc. Very small dishes of potatoes, overcooked broccoli and cabbage - £6 a dish. The lamb shoulder turned out to be a thin strip of lamb - disappointing, with sliced braised? lettuce( with the core) - underwhelming. A few peas and bacon strips and a large faggot (cheap) -which I didn't want with the dish. Overpriced for what you got.

It was dark and raining when I slipped into this very warm and inviting restaurant. I was promptly greeted, relieved of my soggy raincoat and seated. It was then that I realized the restaurant, with the exception of myself and another couple, was empty. The waiter was very attentive. He was busy pointed out (pushed) the specials and never offered me a menu. I should have asked. Maybe the food would have been better. I ordered the cod with shrimp and broccoli. And then I waited and waited and waited. I couldn't figure it out since I was the only one ordering food. About a half an hour later it arrived. One piece of cod with some tiny tiny shrimp and three pieces of very tough broccolini. I also had ordered the "seasonal vegetables" which was a small dish of tough kale. My bill with the addition of one glass of wine and 2 scoops of ice cream was 65 pounds. It's a lovely setting, but if they don't get their act together, I don't believe they will be around much longer. By the time I left, there was only one other table that was occupied.

Had a lovely meal here on Saturday. Right in the heart of Oxford, the dining room was nice and intimate, and buzzing with people. From the moment we walked in the service was relaxed and friendly. Menu was classic French inspired with a board of seafood specials.. we had oysters, lobster bisque, lobster and mussels…. We had an excellent meal at No.1 Ship Street, a fine-dining restaurant set amongst a district full of fast-casual eats and pub grub for the student crowd. They put real thought into trying to accommodate us as a walk-in party of two with the complication of a baby in a pram/stroller when it would have been easy to simply say “no, we are full.” My halibut on squid ink risotto was excellent; my wife’s mussels and fries were good too. I was really surprised about this place because I really thought I was going to like it. The food was not great nor worth the money. I got the cod special and it was really lacking flavour, I had to ask for salt and pepper and was tempted to ask for more seasoning besides that since it was so bland. the mussels were alright though. The service was just as bad as the food. Waitor got visibly annoyed at my questions when I asked how big the fish was and he answered 'normal.' I don't know why it is hard to give ounces or etc. Also, we requested the food comes out as ready but apparently they couldn't accommodate that so I had to wait another hour for my food while I watched my friend eat his starter as his main, and after he watched me eat. I was so hungry that I felt sick. During the meal no one came to see if we wanted more drinks or any additional food etc.

Three of our party ordered the snails. One of them crunched down on something that turned out to be a piece of glass. The manager when informed, took the entire starter of snails away and casually informed me that he wouldn't be charging us for them, which I thought was very generous of him (I didn't really think that!) I pointed out that his customer service left a lot to be desired considering one of our party could have been seriously injured. He then told me his supplier was at fault and it wasn't anything to do with him. He eventually relented and gave us a bottle of fizz on the house. Left a sour taste in my mouth. Two of us came at lunchtime and ordered from the set meal options. His butternut squash soup was good but unremarkable. I sent my squid back for having a taste bypass. Another, much tastier portion was given, unfortunately well after he'd finished his soup. I've never had squid before: is there supposed to be a tough thing like a rubber band down the length of it? Pork cheeks were very tasty, rich gravy and perfect mash with a few tiny cubes of unpeeled granny smith apple. Fine. Unremarkable. We came across this place by chance and walked without reservation for lunch. We opted for 2 course set menu and dishes were very well cooked and nicely presented. We paired it with local sparkling wine. The service was lovely. We have observed that the restaurant was serving local clientele rather than tourists which was reassuring. We would be happy to dine there again.

I have lost count the times I passed and it was too busy for 1. Today is the day. Fresh mussels? Yes sir.....I'll know if their not. WELL, WELL, I ate my words they're Fresh and meaty. Cream and dry white wine. Home-made bread. A bowl of greens. Absolutely cooked to perfection. Water with lime. A medium dry glass of wine. HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR IRISH COFFE? I asked Holly. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT SIR? I rattled on.how I like the whiskey heated so I don't get a luke warm drink. They checked if I was happy with my whiskey. Irish only I replied. IT WAS PERFECT. JUST RIGHT. Throughout my visit I was treated as a VIP. Every member of staff took the time to listen to my idle chat making my solo experience not lonely at all. That's a first. I can not applaud the service enough. They called me a taxi. They served me excellent food. They looked after me. They made me feel special . The dessert was incredible. If the sugar doesn't break like ice and the creme ain't creamy and fresh , it can not be the real deal. Lucky me. Real deal. Thank you very much for helping me celebrate back to work. May I make a special thanks to Holly. Very professional and friendly. Worthy of best person who's served me as long as I can remember. Should be front of house.

We ate here on Saturday 3 February as a group of 8 and had an amazing meal. The Cod with clams was an excellent, great mussels and the oysters were really fresh. The waiter who looked after us was excellent and made it a great experience. Will definitively recommend and return.

On 1st February we ate at this restaurant. I ordered the cod with clams. After 2 mouthfuls I suspected that there were traces of mussels in the sauce and asked the waitress to check with the chef. She confirmed that it was possible and asked if I would like to choose another meal. I did because I'm allerglic to mussels. When the bill was presented we were charged for both meals. I spoke with the owners who insisted that, because the meal was advertised with clams, the problem was my responsibility and we had to pay. I pointed out that the clams were fine it was the issues of the traces of mussel in the sauce but he turned his back on me and walked away. I think I preferred No1 Ship Street in its previous civil and relaxed incarnation as the News Cafe if this is the attitude and approach of the management.

We came here for a Friday eve dinner. Our waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. The decor and the atmosphere was great. The cote de bouef in particular was delicious on the surf and turf, but it was all great. We also really enjoyed the oysters. We would come back.

Phenomenal food, excellent drinks. Everything you’d want from a bistro. French onion soup was perfection. Thornback ray was a delight, I cannot wait to return. Pisco sour a highlight.

Visited here for my sons 21st and was able to get a table on Saturday night. The service was attentive and informative but we were on the 1st floor and it lacked atmosphere. We had their version of onion soup which was tasty and a good appetizer. We followed by sharing the Cote de Beauf s served with chips. The steak was good but lacked a sauce and needed it, the triple cooked chips were the star but shouldnt have been. We closed with a chocolate souffle which was good but not great. We enjoyed the experience but wouldn't rush back there is better for less. I also dont approve of them adding 12.5% service charge it may be nominally optional but not the way its presented. Service didnt justify 12.5% maybe 2.5%.

Red wine risotto was outrageous, we could not even eat it. Other dishes were average or slightly below average as well. Main course also took more than 30mins after starter was finished. At least service was good, so that made up for the kitchen glitch. But will not be going back for sure.

Very good. Ambiance is nice and cozy. The meals were varied and flavours really rich. We were notably pleasantly surprised by the oysters as starters, and the coffee / salted caramel homemade ice creams, which are very interestingly deep and delicate, without being too sweet. We came for dinner, but they also seem to have good value for money lunches, that I'd happily taste next time I go. Recommended.

Mediocre overcooked food for conference delegates. Vegetables came late. In fact the meal was meant to begin at 7pm but we only received our starters at 8.15pm. Very disappointed.

Great pub with many events going on: open mic and Sunday board games in particular are great! Lots of varied seating space, including a large covered outdoor area which is lovely in the sunshine. Delicious food too!
