We came across this very small bar in the arches of Newcastle and we weren't disappointed, they had a good selection of craft beers the only problem was that we only got chance to try 1 as it was closing time but we will go back .

Pleased I highlighted this place as I couldn’t find it on trip advisor so I’ve added it.it was our first time here with our friends who had been before.such a lovely little bar with real ales good choice ,it’s quite compact but that’s what we like about it,it’s on a quiet street just behind the main road down from the railway station off through the tunnel on the right so worth a visit

Voucher given for beer tasting experience as Christmas experience from one of our daughters. Best Xmas present ever! Fab location. Close to central Newcastle and you hear the rumbling of the trains overhead which add to the ambience. You get to try 5 very different beers with tasting notes. Portions very decent. Moreover the information that comes with the tasting is informative and well paced. We learnt a lot in a very relaxed two hours. The lovely Leo is full of enthusiasm and knowledge and answers any questions with experience. Great relaxed environment where you feel welcome (you could go solo!), enjoy trying new beers (we had never heard of ‘sours’ - DELICIOUS! ) and learn something - not to mention stay on for a few more beers afterwards. Friendly knowledgable staff. Clean loos. What more would you want!

Had been in Newcastle for a football match with freinds in Sunderland, and after getting the Metro back to Newcastle, I had a few hours to kill before my train back to Edinburgh. My friends from London headed across the road from the train station to a micropub that was there, but was far to plastic for my liking, and my friend from the area turned to me and said "I will take you somewhere better" and after going down a few back streets to the other side of Newcastle Train Station, we came to Forth Street, and two great craft beer bars: Beer Street and Box Social. Both were really laid back and a great selection of beers, but out the two I much preferred Box Social. Great selection of beers on offer as well as ciders, all on tap and a few cans and bottles. Excellent prices and will most certainly be back again in future when in Newcastle again and looking for a beer.

We knew of this place but needed a local to get us here on foot! Worth it, great atmosphere and really interesting beers. We were lucky to get a table upstairs in the small seating space, just the thing after walking round Newcastle all day!

Loved here! Small and perfectly formed, great choice of craft and keg beers. Served by the friendly and knowledgeable Ian. Quirky it certainly is, I even liked the noise of the trains going overhead! This place is certainly worth a visit or two!

Recommended by friends so I popped in here during a brief visit to Newcastle and was very impressed. Good range of excellent beers and the staff were really friendly and helpful when choosing a beer. It's hidden away but is actually really easy to find and well worth a visit.

Called in for a drink during a tour of the real ale bars in Newcastle and Gateshead. The ambience is very good The furnishings are refreshing minimal and if you're a railway fan you will love the sound of the trains passing overhead on their way to the station.

I am a beer fan, so was delighted to find this tiny little beer bar under a railway arch. They had great atmosphere, and an excellent selection of beers too. It's also extremely convenient if you're staying in the Crowne Plaza hotel - minutes away!

Almost walked past this bar as it looks so small and unassuming from the street. And the ground floor is pretty tiny with just enough room for the bar and two or thee tables. Thankfully there is a larger upstairs seating area so there's plenty of room. This bar has a wide range of craft type beers and I think it may brew some of them itself. The bar server was friendly and efficient. The only downside was the number of people standing at the bar. There were 3 people standing at the bar and with it being so small it was difficult to get served, I think there was just enough room for one person at a time to get to the bar. This may be ok in quiet times but we arrived at the same time as a group of 5 other people and we were all trying to see what drinks were on offer and it was quite a squeeze. Other than the small size I'll be sure to come back here.

My son and I booked a tutored beer tasting through the Groupon website, at Box Social in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Being local, we had called into the premises on previous occasions, so we're really looking forward to our visit. We arrived early and enjoyed a couple of drinks from the bar, before our excellent host, Joe, began his very interesting talk on the history of beer, and the advancements in brewing technology through the ages, whilst we enjoyed sampling some of the unbelievable variety of brews, which were included in the tasting. I would heartily recommend this activity, mainly for the enthusiasm, and obvious love, that Joe has for the brewing craft. His recollections and memories of working in the brewing industry were extremely interesting and informative, and at times, eye opening! Please book this, and enjoy the experience, you will not be disappointed! I would attend this tasting again, without a second thought, it was so interesting! Suffice to say, after the tasting, we did purchase some of the beers we had sampled from the bar! The only downside we experienced, was that a minority of the guests on the tasting thought that it would be nice to chat amongst themselves, instead of listening to Joe's commentary, which we thought, was very annoying behaviour!

Went with a friend that isn't really a beer fan, but this place change that a little. The guy that did the event had a good knowledge about beer and its history. With 5 beers to taste and a bit about the beers themselves. We liked some more than others. And at the end of it my friend had a taste for beer that he didn't before.

I work in Newcastle and enjoy a swift pint in the box social when I can. If you're a craft beer fan then this is a mini heaven with a fantastic selection at a reasonable price. The staff are welcoming with a great knowledge and will gladly give you a taste of anything you like the sound of. This is the box social brewery tap and the beers are always interesting and innovative. If you like your beer with flavour and not mass produced blandness then this is the pub for you. Try the Campfire Porter, thank me later.

Got recommended this place from a friend. I was a bit dubious as I'm not a great real ale fan so I did not have high hopes. How wrong I was!Fantastic atmosphere.I'm a bit of a people watcher and the folk coming in and out were brilliant. And I don't mean in a mocking way, just some genuinely interesting folk. The staff were tip top and clearly interested in their customers and products.I recommend the campfire porter, its the absolute dogs dingley danglies, but at 7% Beware!!! As a lager lout I gave their session lager a go. Sometimes in real ale pubs any lager sold is either pants or super specialised and either way tastes rank. The box social lager was fine. As "cooking lager" goes it was decent, it was no Budvar, nor did it pretend to be, but I know what I would rather drink compared to say Fosters. They had a decent range of beers and who knows on future visits I may be lured to the dark side of real ales and beer. Give it a go.Oh, and as an added bonus the prices are pretty decent so you don't need to take the deeds to your home to have a good night.

This is a great little pub in the heart of Newcastle. It's tucked behind central station in the railway arches and is small enough to be personal but big enough to have a great atmosphere. The selection of beer is good with staff willing to let you sample a beer before you buy a pint of it. Staff are very friendly and more than helpful. I didn't try the food so can't comment on that but I'm sure it will be fantastic. If you like loud music and a fight to get to the bar then this is not the place for you, but if a great venue with great beer, where you can actually hear each other talk and great atmosphere is what you fancy then look no further than The Box Social.
