Bowmore Hotel Restaurant in Argyll & Bute

Wow what a great place. If you want to feel like a local come to this restaurant. It was quaint in a great location and amazing food. Best scallops we ever had. Incredible whiskey selection, the best we’ve experienced at a restaurant.

Wonderful soup again and the service is as usual friendly and I enjoy the new decked area outside As usual my preferred and only drinking whole in town thanks again.

We ate here twice on Sunday. A light lunch in the afternoon and a traditional Sunday Roast in the evening. Great welcome, the manager and bar staff were top notch. My wife had the beef and we had the venison. Nice to hear where they were sourced and both local. Both meats were tender, tasty and in good supply. Nice selection of Gins, as well as Whisky. Definitely recommend a visit. Dogs also welcome.

I called the restaurant looking for availability for a large group. The lady on the phone took my details and was very helpful. Unfortunately the booking didn't get passed on to the team on the day, but they coped well with 15 people turning up out of the blue. The restaurant has a good choice of food and catered for diners from teens to in our 50s happily. The highlight is most definitely Lucci's Whisky Bar within the hotel. An enormous number of Islay whiskies for sale and on display. An incredible collection and one worth visiting the bar and restaurant for. Food is a good portion size and reasonably priced, setting is snug and comfortable, service was great - despite our unexpected arrival - and the drinks available mind blowing

Restauranten var en stor skuffelse. Det var stappfullt, men alt for lite betjening. Vi fikk barkartet, men fikk ikke anledning å bestille en drink før maten kom. Forretten var god, men hovedretten var en stor skuffelse for de fleste. Deg var mye says på tallerkenen, men den smakte lite. Lammekotelettene var tørre. Maten varsmakløs. Det verste var at de som betjente oss ikke hadde tid til å ta seg av oss.

L’établissement est composé d’un pub, d’une partie repas pour le pub, et d’une partie restaurant plus formel. Visited the Bowmore Hotel with friends for lunch. All six of us loved our food. We had steak pie, venison, fish cake and fish and chips and couldn't fault it. Great choice of wine and of course whisky. Great decor and ambience. Very friendly host.

We ate here last night, the food was ok but felt that Covid precautions were not being followed. Sign inside door saying use sanitiser but nothing there. Majority of staff not wearing masks. Many customers moving around without masks. Tables close together and no sign of extra cleaning.There is a screen on the bar which is about 2ft wide so totally inadequate.Wouldn’t recommend choosing this place to eat in present circumstances

Best fish and chips I’ve had in ages. Pretty certain the chips were fresh hand cut and they were delicious. The fish was thick and tasty and the batter perfectly crisp. Could not have asked for better. Next time I fancy a takeaway I know where I’ll be going. Cheers Peter and team Bowmore Hotel!

Excellent food and unbelievable choice of whisky. Staff are very attentive and enjoy a good laugh. Great for watching football, playing pool and darts. Can’t wait to come back for that pint of Guinness Lucci Snr owes me!

This hotel is in a superb area of islay, lovely scenery and busy wee village , the hotel offers a superb range of food ( you will be doing well to finish it), the landlord and staff make you feel most welcome, one to try people.

We ate here on our first night on Islay; lovely setting and the staff allowed us to change to a table overlooking the sea. Service was great and the staff friendly/helpful - giving great tips on where to go. The food was excellent, fresh, well cooked and good portions. Would recommend the hotel

The food was exceptional, salmon , mashed potatoes and veg cooked to perfection . Very welcoming and great service. Responsible covid 19 precautions. In my opinion the best food in Bowmore, highly recommended, I will certainly return.

We’ve just returned from a glorious week in Islay, unfortunately most of the distilleries were closed due to the current pandemic. But that did not stop us enjoying this beautiful island.. we’ve been here may times before to festivals etc. but enjoying the island purely for itself wildlife, walks and stunning beaches was a refreshing experience..We drank in the Bowmore Hotel most evenings and ate there also . We could not fault the place, from their disciplined approach to CoVid 19 to their welcoming nature it was a pleasure to visit. Good food with a changing specials board washed down With a great selection of Islay whiskies kept me enthused every visit. Peter is at the helm and alongside the whole staff this is a very pleasant place to visit..We would recommend this establishment to everyone..

The best whiskey bar in Bowmore with an impressive number of whiskeys to be tested, including very rare ones. With Lucci and Peter we found our home in Islay! Thank you so much for your being so welcoming, helpful and nice with us during our staying!We had really great time!

AVOID at all costs. There are other friendlier places to go in Bowmore.On Islay for the weekend with another couple. We were recommended the bar in the Bowmore Hotel for its range of whiskies. When we arrived the owner/manager directed us into the lounge bar/ restaurant but the barman was exceptionally unfriendly and made it clear he was not happy to serve us. The atmosphere was decidedly aggressive and unwelcoming. Because of COVID restrictions we had to exit via the public bar where we ran the gauntlet of locals who made their views on us being in that bar very clear. We were not wanted. This was all because one of us was wearing a green jacket in a bar which, was clearly a Rangers Football Club supporting bar going by the three framed Rangers shirts on the walls. Bigoted unfriendly and unwelcoming. We gladly took our custom elsewhere.

They took our last minute booking. They were only offering one page of the menu so we had normal pub meals. The food was fine. The staff were great and friendly. The pub was buzzing, many whiskeys on offer and there was a nice atmosphere. Would definitely visit again post COVID.

Had a nice dinner here, really good pub food.Staff were friendly and one of the owner’s took time to speak with us about whisky, a subject he was very knowledgeable on. Pity we had to drive or we’d have spent more time in the bar tasting some.

Met some amazing people there one night! Had an awesome meal the next night. Bar tenders were very knowledgeable. :) The Haggis ball dish were a great way to try it.

Ristorante all’interno del Bowmore hotel. Ambiente informale ed accogliente con menu interessante anche se per pranzo ha offerta molto ridotta.. quindi non abbiamo potuto provare i piatti più tipici tipo cervo, daino etc. Carne comunque molto buona e buone anche le birre. Pezzo forte è il bar che offre ogni tipo di Islay whisky con ovviamente la maggiore scelta che risiede nel marchio Bowmore. Esiste poi la Whisky Bible che è un must da leggere.. prezzi adeguati.

Очень правильное место. Всё очень вкусно. Наливают правильные напитки. Домашняя обстановка. Нам не повезло с устрицами,нам устрицы не достались,но всё же они молодцы. Свежайшие морепродукты. Невероятно вкусное карэ ягнёнка. И вообще,всё на 100%!!!

Het Bowmore hotel/restaurant wordt heel druk bezocht. Reserveren is een must. De kaart is redelijk uitgebreid.De porties zijn wel erg groot. Het eten smaakt wel erg lekker. Als je van whisky houdt is dit een heel goede plek. De bediening was heel vriendelijk en behulpzaam.

My daughter and I visited the bar for drinks one evening and Peter Jr was spot on with his whisky recommendations for each of us. We enjoyed each one so much we came back the next night for dinner. The food was excellent! We will definitely come back!

A bit of a mixed review here.. we had a booking at 7.30pm, arrived at 7:35pm as we couldn't find it.. the only staff member (a bored looking female) we found was sitting at the bar (in a different room from the restaurant) who basically told us to find our table ourselves.. erm.. ok... 15 minutes later the restaurant waitress came and took our order.. our drinks arrived about 10 mins after that then we waited.. and waited.. at 8:30pm I wondered if they'd forgotten about us... the waitress (who was really nice) then appeared and told us our meal hadn't got to the kitchen but it'd be 10 mins.. (we had both ordered different lamb dishes)..Meal arrived - it was lovely! And, to give them their due, they took our drinks off the bill (which was a bottle of wine & a beer).. for the mix up.. Later, another couple (who were on the same tour as us) also told us they were forgotten about but the meal was great!The meal waitress we had seemed to be alone and running about mad.. I have no idea who the lazy one in the bar was.. but she didn't inspire much confidence.. the meal/food itself was really lovely.. (when it eventually got to us!) so the points on the scoreboard go to the waitress in the restaurant who I'd give 5 points to (but -2 due to the lazy bar female who couldnt be bothered with us) and the food!!!! and the fact they did recitify the long wait..

This was our first time in Islay and were struggling to find a dog friendly pub/restaurant to get something to eat and out of the three different restaurants that we found this one was far the best. The food is to die for and also there is a fantastic choice of menu as I said before we were struggling because in other places it was either a rubbish menu or bad seating where as the Bowmore hotel had both and we were able to take the dogs in and the service was fantastic.

Nice comfortable hotel serving good affordable food - great range of course of drinks especially gin and whiskey - sat outside for the drinks and inside for the food which was tasty. As in most places we visited the staff were welcoming and attentive.

We had a large family dinner at the Bowmore Hotel Restaurant. It is challenging to provide good service at a large restaurant, let alone a historic one!They did a great job, with excellent food and service. The salmon was perfectly cooked, along with sides of mashed potatoes, french fries, and fresh vegetables. Adjacent to our room was the bar, and music. The hotel is an active venue for local musicians with music late into the evening.Bowmore is a historic, quaint town, also home to the Bowmore Distillery which we toured! If you are visiting Islay it is definitely worth a visit.

We ate here once during our stay in Bowmore. The Islay Crab starter was amazing, the fillet steak was ok. The other guests were mostly hotelguests. They were quite noisy (skyping home during dinner...) which did not add to the experience.

We visited the Bowmore Hotel on our last night in Islay and wished we had been in earlier in the week!

We came on a Sunday evening, and we adored it ! The food was awesome (lamb, mussels and smoked scallops), pretty reasonable priced (not too cheap but not too expensive for the quality!) and the team was very nice to us. We had a nice evening there, got to choose from a huuuuge selection of whiskies and went back to our car feeling so full but so happy ! Thanks to Pete and the lady (didn’t catch her name sorry), we had a very good night !! Definitely recommend

Book ahead. It gets booked up quickly. Oysters and whisky starter was perfect. We both had bake which was perfectly cooked. The espresso coffee was delicious.

The Scallops MacLellan and the Seafood Pasta were just good, not very good, while the excellent white wine, Picpoul Pinet, was a relative bargain at 20 pounds. We all had a good time, but we expected better.

Situated inside the hotel, the dining area is cozy and comfortable. They offer a selection of local dishes from venison to beef to seafood, and everything we had was absolutely amazing.

Maten var bra och miljön unik. Personalen var trevlig och hjälpsam även om det gick fort när han pratade. Vacker inredning.

A wonderfull place te be. I loved the food and the Whisky bible contains almost 600 types of Malt. Don't worry...Peter MacLellan tasted them all and can help you make a choice. Don't taste them all on one evening!!

What a great meal from beginning to end. We started with six oysters, which were served with whisky. Tasted absolutely fabulous!!!! I had the venison which was heavenly!! Ron has the lamb which was fantastic! Enjoyed with a bottle of Malbec! Great service and nice quaint restaurant!

A comfortable well designed dining room. A well chosen menu and good local food. You will need a good appetite as the portions are substantial!

Had a drink here on arriving in Islay and decided to cancel our booking elsewhere to eat here instead. What a good idea. friendly staff, great food and an easy walk back to the cottage. My venison fillet was delicious

Great food for reasonable prices.

My wife and some friends visited Islay recently and ate both nights at the Bowmore. On each occasion the food was delicious and served promptly but the real hidden gem is the quality of the interior furnishings in both the lounge bar and the restaurant. A local craftsman has made a beautiful job of the tables and chairs plus additional fittings and fixtures which makes it a lovely place to enjoy the wonderful food. The only complaint is that the servings were TOO LARGE!

Trevlig restaurang med god mat och ett rent fantastiskt utbud av whisky. De har många ovanliga och begränsade upplagor. Till och med varianter exklusiva för helt andra länder, så jag kan garantera att en finsmakare kan hitta något gott att dricka. Personalen är trevlig och hjälpsam och vi hade en mycket trevlig måltid, givetvis med tillhörande goda drycker.

We had a few nice lunches here. The food and service was very good and our dog was made to feel welcome too! I’d recommend a stop here, the burgers are fab.

warm, nice pub atmosphere-very welcoming and attentive staff. yummy food with generous portions. our dog was welcome too. definitely recommend and we'd like to try it out for dinner too as there is a nice restaurant along with a wide variety of whiskies

We had dinner in the small dining room. it was early and we had the room to ourselves. My husband had the lamb chops, which he very much enjoyed. I had the venison stew and when I had eaten my fill, there was still a huge portion remaining. The service was attentive and friendly.

近くのホテルに宿泊していたので、徒歩で夕食を食べに行きました。ムール貝っぽい貝とホワイトソースの料理をダークエールとともに頂きました。特にホワイトソースは濃厚なコクがあって、かなりたっぷり目でしたので、一緒に出されたパンに付けて平らげました。お腹いっぱいで大満足。お店の人も皆さん気さくに対応して下さって、気持ちよく過ごせました。

Huge whisky selection, great service, and delicious food. We ordered the beef pie and it was heavily laden with top quality beef and rich sauce. The restaurant is small, so bookings advisable.

Islay is expensive to eat out in- so this place is a real find! Very reasonable prices. The menu is excellent. Food is great. Friendly staff. The restaurant is small and intimate. Very comfortable. Wish I'd found this place at the beginning of the week- I would have been there every night! It's small- so booking is essential. Highly recommend this place

My wife and I stopped in for a pint and plate of chips and found the pub staff extremely busy as it was a football Saturday. However, the staff was very friendly and the locals, while rowdy during the match, were friendly and just added to the fun experience. We ended up getting a delicious large plate of chips and enjoyed a couple quality drams of Bruichladdich Vallanch. They had many in stock. We’ll be stopping in again next year during our holiday for sure.

6 of us enjoyed dinner then a few drinks in the bar! We had Sunday roast and the food was home cooked and delish. Especially loved the roast tatties! Portions were huge so didn’t manage a dessert. The bar had a great atmosphere and staff were lovely. Highly recommended

We only visited the bar for drinks. It was small, but encouraged people to interact and we chatted to a friendly local couple. The bar stocked a full range of Islay whiskies. Service was a bit slow as the staff seemed to be multi-tasking, but very friendly. We asked for some crisps/nuts with our drinks and were amazed to be given a small ceramic bowlful, complimentary! The dining room looked lovely, but we didn't have opportunity to eat there - surely next time!

Åt pilgrimsmussla i nån smörvitlökshistoria. Musslorna hade nog bott i frysen väldigt länge, smakade fisk - på gränsen till oätliga. Till detta fick jag ris (åt aldrig) potatismos (helt okay) en hög med kokta grönskar (helt okay). Britisk mat när den är sådär... Visst ett grymt utbud av rökig whisky - för d3n som gillar det.

Stopped of on our way home for a bite to eat and a pint and found this. Lots of locals in and a great atmosphere. Had a laugh with some people at the bar and the staff, again were really friendly. We loved our time here and would happily go back again, anytime!!

Oh, we had such a wonderful dinner here! The staff is amazing, the food absolutely fantastic, and the bar is amazingly equipped. Too bad we found this jewel our last night spent on the island.

Barmeal style but better then ordinary pubfood. The food we had was tasty and abundant and absolutely affordable. Local pancakes with ice as desert. Add a local anekdote from Peter and you have an experience hard to top. See you guys!

We spent the day on Islay during our week on Jura and looking for somewhere to eat, we found the Bowmore Hotel Restaurant serving food all afternoon and reasonably priced. Great views too.

Janice and I would like to thank the staff for making our dinner really enjoyable, if you are looking for a plate full this is the place, the menu is large and varied good home cooking.

Whether for a drink or for a meal you can’t beat the customer service here. Whether it’s big peter or little peter (who in fairness now more than matches his dad) the care consideration and banter can’t be beaten on Islay. The food is fresh and wonderfully cooked the atmosphere is kid friendly while also providing adult areas too. And the whisky menu is immense!

Really glad Peter spent a few bob , it needed it and it’s been worth every penny , glad he’s kept the old paintings , great choice and guality food

War im Mai mehrmals im Hotel Essen , das Essen ist wirklich für schottische Verhältnisse hervorragend, hier stimmt das Preis Leistung Verhältnis. Fischgerichte vom feinsten, was auf den Teller kommt ist einfach klasse.Hervorheben möchte ich persönlich aber das Lammfleisch, einfach sensationell. Umgeworfen hat mich hinterher die Whiskey Karte, über 1000 verschiedene Whiskeys, die Whiskeybibel ist einfach ein muss für jeden der Whiskey mag. Bedienung und Einrichtung sind ebenfalls klasse.

Maybe it was what we ordered, maybe it was that the kitchen was getting ready to close, but I've had better roast leg of lamb in a hospital cafeteria. My husband was disappointed by the roast venison. I think our dishes had the same "brown gravey." They do have a good selection of whiskys, but stay away from the roasts.

This restaurant was really good. We had dinner both nights we stayed at the hotel. We had oysters and a plate of different seafood. Good service!

One of the things we like best about traveling is meeting other travelers. We met many lovely people here and it was so relaxing! Great food and service.

Looking for somewhere to eat and received a recommendation for this establishment. Exterior needs a bit of a spruce up but hey, once you step inside it's like an Aladdin's cave. The bar area is pretty much a standard bar but has everything you need, tv for the sports, darts and pool. The main thing is it has a fantastic whisky selection and the restaurant is ace. The food is awesome and so is the service. The show is run by the owner and his son and it is a wonderful experience, I just can't wait to return.

Popped in out the cold for small refreshment. Staff very welcoming. We didn’t eat here but the food looked good and the menu is extensive.

Since we stayed at this hotel, Peter assured us there would always be a table in the restaurant no matter how busy and he was true to his word. The staff is friendly and hard working. You won't find any of the fancy newer cuisine here; it's pretty traditional fare such as Shepard's Pie (outstanding), roast beef (overcooked with lots of drab gravy), vegetables in rural Scotland can be pretty sparse. But the menu was extensive and the surroundings very nice.

My wife and I had dinner here. We were advised to book and glad we did as ten minutes after we arrived it the restaurant was full.

A lovely spot for a Dram and Dinner. First suggestion, if you want to go for dinner make a reservation well in advance if you want to eat in the dining room. They will server food in the bar as well. The selection of Whiskeys is phenomenal and they actually have a 17 page, single spaced type written “bible” of their entire selection, you could take hours just looking at it. After a dram of a delightful 23 year old Bowmore, which took them a few minutes to locate and two people to get it off one of the back shelves we went across the way to dinner. The dinner was delightful and classic UK. I stared with a chicken pate which was very tasty and followed with Venison in gravy with potatoes and vegetables. My companion had the beef in gravy with the same accompaniments. As I said it was classic UK with the vegetables a bit over boiled, the potatoes fried and the meat very well done (read dry) but smothered in a lovely gravy. For desert we had one of the best sticky toffee puddings on the entire trip. The service was a bit spotty just do to the fact that they were very busy but all the staff were delightful.

Stayed here back in June for 2 nights. The host is a friendly guy and they've recently refurbished the rooms...

Visited for a quick drink and ended up staying for dinner.We had our meal in the lounge bar as the dining room was busy but this did not detract from an enjoyable meal.The bar staff are excellent(Peter) and the food of a high quality and large portions, like most bars in Islay they have an extensive range of whiskies ranging from a modest to expensive price.Peter was also very knowledgeable on the range of whiskies available. l

We went in for an early lunch as the restaurant had been recommended to us. Lovely welcome from Peter and staff. The surroundings are just lovely. We were served very quickly and "Oh My Goodness!" What platefuls. We had Battered fish and Chicken Goujons with chips and salad - the portions were huge! The food was lovely, fresh and hot. We will definitely return and certainly recommend to everyone. Thanks for the lovely lunch.

Während meines Islay-Besuches verschlug es mich auch in das Bowmore Hotel. An der Bar kann man sich mit einigen Orginalen der Insel unterhalten, was zum Teil recht lustige Gespräche ergibt - richtiges Pub-Felling. In den beiden Nachbarräumen geht es ruhiger zu. Hier, im Sitzbereich des Restaurants, kann man gute schottische Hausmannskost genießen. Die Preise sind in Ordnung. Ich hatte ein weniger typisch schottisches Chillie Con Carne, welches mir etwas zu lasch gewürzt war, aber meine Frau hatte einen richtig guten Shepherds Pie, nach Islay Art. Dazu gab es für uns beide eine große Portion frische Chips und Gemüse. Unsere Nachbarn bestellten Steak, welches wohl aus Irland rüberexportiert wurde und super auf den Punkt gebraten war. Das Beste an diesem Lokal ist allerdings weniger das Essen, sondern die Whiskyauswahl. Zur Kneipenseite hin findet man den ersten Teil und zur Restaurantseite hin kann man den zweiten Teil der Sammlung bewundern, darunter auch echte Rarietäten, wie den Ardberg Alligator oder auch den Ardberg Supernova. Für alle Whiskyfans ein lohnenswerter Besuch.

We were warned that we would not leave this place hungry, and how right they were. The portions were satisfying and delicious. I had the Thai green curry that carried a gorgeous spicy flavour, more than meeting my expectations. Some of our party had three course, incredibly, with each one bringing renewed gasps of delight. The meringue was like a mini volcano which covered most of the plate. I look forward to going back for the food but also to admire and taste the unbelievable whisky collection that Peter has accrued over seven years. His enthusiasm has already caused me to begin my own whisky collection. The Bowmore Hotel does not disappoint.

Was recommended by several people on the island to eat here. I waited until my last night here to try it out....should have went sooner......you have a choice of eating in the restaurant or the bar.... I chose the latter as I was having a beer and went for the steak pie....the portion was big and the quality of the meat was very good Indeed.priced reasonably too at £10.95

We visited as it had been advertised as a whisky bar and whilst it does have an impressive whisky menu it also has a pool table squashed in and a very large TV dominating the area. The customers were all men and we felt like everyone stopped talking and stared as we (2 couples) entered - bizarre!!!

We had a pleasant evening here with live music. The food was good pub food but they were very busy and it took a long time to be served. I was inadvertently overchared by £20 on the card machine but when I phoned the guy had realised and immediately refunded me with profuse apologies.

We ate here because they allow dogs. The restaurant was pleasant and the food very nice (I had the seafood stew which was excellent) however as the restaurant got busier, the service got slower and slower. Don't bother with the home made black forest - they served it hot! not good. Otherwise, they were pleasant enough

Stayed at hotel and had dinner here. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The quality of food was superb. I had crab salad and fish stew - both dishes were excellent. My husband had finan haddie and raved about it! The dishes were all accompanied by very tasty veg. Big portions! Would certainly eat there again when we come to Islay

This restaurant is fantastic. The menu is extensive with dishes to suit all tastes and the surroundings are first class. The quality and quantity of the meals was excellent, we couldn't have asked for more

We where greated by young peter on arrival and shown straight to our table.The hotel have an amazing selection of whisky and very hard to decide what to drink, as just too much choice (never a bad thing)We are lucky to visit during whisky festival so they have every single special release from the week open to choose from.I like my ale so tried the hotels own one and have to say it is a must if you are a beer drinker.Now onto the food. Again fantastic selection with lots to choose from.Our party had -Scallops in white wine and garlic sauce.Mexican chicken.Creamy chicken & mushroom Rack on Black (rack of lamb on black pudding)The dishes came with massive portions of side orders to share. Home made chips, potatoes and mash. Selection of vegetablesJust amazing wish we had decided to visit earlier in the week. And will be back again.A must for food and drinks if on Islay

We tried their fish & chips and pasta. The pasta was really nice and served with great sauce. The fish was fresh, and the chips were like wedges: thick and tasty. Their whisky menu was superb. Some old bottlings of the Islay distilleries were available. It's a professional family-run business, and the owner will welcome you with great warmth.

You can share the entrees. My Shepherd's Pie was big enough for three! Really great staff. Enjoyed the beer selections too.

Ein Muss. Hier muss man unbedingt gewesen sein. Vater Peter, Sohn Peter Alexander. Beides ehemalige Fussballer. Vater im Frack hinter der Theke. Sohn ein Kenner des Whiskeys und Musiker. Die Mutter der ruhende Pool im Trubel. Die Bar besucht von Einheimischen. Karaoke. Die Auswahl an Whiskeys sensationell. Wir haben uns köstlich amüsiert.
