We stopped here for food after a day on the fells, the food was beautifully presented and as tasty as it looked. Service was perfect and the place is very well maintained. If you like whiskey, you'll love this pub as they have all you dreamed of and more

My husband and I had Sunday lunch here a couple of weeks ago. We were seated in a room at the rear of the bar, right next to the toilet door. The table was dirty and it rocked. On investigation we discovered one of the legs was only just still attached to the table top, someone had tried unsuccessfully to tighten the joint with a beer mat. The food (main course) was ok and we intended to have dessert. But after waiting for more than 20 minutes for someone to remove our plates and take an order for dessert we decided to leave. Whilst paying at the bar we told the young lady that we were disappointed not to have had dessert, she said we could be RESEATED and have dessert. We declined, choosing to drive on to Seascale where we had delicious icecreams from Mawson's ice-cream shop. The entire experience at Bower House was very disappointing.

Loved my stay here, run by friendly welcoming people. The bar was cosy for a February evening, can imagine it is beautiful in the summer with the outdoor area. Dinner was excellent as was breakfast, early service at 7am was great as it gave me the chance to have an early breakfast before leaving for work. The single room I stayed in had everything I needed, was warm and the bed comfortable. Thanks

Came here for 2 nights for food whilst staying locally to climb. Service was very friendly from everyone and it’s a lovely setting with a warm, old style pub feel with an open fireplace. Lovely service throughout and it was heartwarming to see how genuinely friendly and inclusive all of the staff were to our little dog Albie.

Great food, lovely beer garden with beautiful views. Initially a positive experience but was then disappointing. The attitude of staff was dismissive, rushed and abrupt (not even an offer of a dessert menu). A pretty poor experience as a customer, dining out on a special occasion.

Staying near to Eskdale Green the Bower House was our nearest pub, we ended up eating here 3 times. Staff are welcoming & very friendly, service was wonderful, the food was amazing could not fault anything, I highly recommend the Moroccan lamb pudding with spicy vegetable tagine - I've not had a suet pudding since childhood when my mum used to make them. Also tried the spinach & ricotta samosas and the Cajun chicken, sweet potato fries were best I've ever had. As for desserts I tried the sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate brownie. Very good value for money. If we are ever in staying in the area again, we will definitely be back.

Stayed here over the last weekend , lovely place, staff were excellent , very friendly , nothing too much trouble. The new covid regulations are being adhered to , one way system in the bar/restaruant., name and telephone number on arrival, plenty of hand sanitiser, and the room was spotless, the touch points being cleaned on a regular basis , just to keep everyones mind at rest. The bar is lovely and cosy , plenty of local cask ales, coule of ciders, usual lagers , I had to try all the casks , for medicinal purposes.. :) and would say the Hawks head bitter or the Bower House bitter were the best.Massive beer garden with a view to die for, and you wouldn't be anywhere near anyone else on another bench for those worried about social distancing , plenty of room for kids to play too.The food was very good and hearty , we had the Steak and ale pie , and hunter chicken burger , both were very good , the chips are double fied by the look of it , which makes them very tasty.Breakfast was excellent, full english , all with local produce , jusdging by the delivery van.All in all great little place, around a half hour walk into Dalegarth station for Eskdale , plenty of walks around , and around 6 miles to Wastwater .Would highly recommend to my friends

Shortcrust pastry the melted in your mouth, huge lumps of chicken and ham, crunchy leaks and other veggies all with a smoked cheese sauce. Me and 5 others of my teenage friends came to this pub for supper that night. The food was great! But I was the only one paying in cash and a lady there gave me the wrong change as I paid with two £20 notes and the price was around £25. So she pulled out £15 from the till and put the £10 of the £15 that she owned me on top of the till and avoided me as I knew that change she gave me (£5) was wrong. So after confronting them about me having less change than I should have had she immediately gave it to me.Could have been a mistake but I don’t think so...

A disappointing result all round - the location is good and the grounds are fine - but - we had to return a glass of wine due to someone's lipstick adorning the glass - which was promptly rectified with a generous replacement but shouldn't have happened - the fish pie had been frozen and the sauce had subsequently separated leaving the salmon tasting like dirty, oily dishwater. A young waiter didn't know how to respond to our complaint and although we should have taken it further we paid and left.

We turned up and it was very busy with reservations but the staff were friendly and accommodated us. They did advise they were out of Sunday dinners but this wasn't a problem for us as we hadn't booked and could still have anything of the normal menu. It was a great decision. We chose a variety of meals including Steak and Ale pie, leek and ham pie, cajun chicken, a burger, and a beef dinner. The food was absolutely beautiful, which meant empty plates all round. We only ordered a couple of desserts and these were equally delicious. ??

There were numerous slight amends to our dish requirements which they got perfectly right on each. That is really impressive for a small venue - they're chefs are totally awesome. Really enjoyed the food too - hubby had prawns to start with and I had the cripsy camembert which I'd definitely order again. Main course I had steak & chips, and he had the Morrocan lamb - both were good. Dessert I had the Blondie - which was good. Was driving past at 2 and thought we would drop in for a late lunch. Dogs were welcome and there is a nice garden. Food was pretty good and fairly priced. Staff very friendly. Overall a very pleasant lunch.

We have eaten at the Bower on a previous occasion and had drinks there several times. So to write a negative review is really disappointing. We sat at our table at 19.45 to eat for 20.00. The waitress had to find a menu as there wasn't adequate to go around all diners. Not a problem, we thought. Finally we placed our order, with only one starter. Then by 21.00 we still hadn't received our main. Upon enquiring the waitress explained that there had been a large party in. Correct - but they arrived around the same time as ourselves and were getting ready to place orders for pudding. Our meal turned up after pressing for an answer how long for our main course. No one came to ask how our meal was. Upon paying at the bar - yes again no one had cleared our table, or asked if we required to look at the puddings - I explained that the service had not been what we had experienced historically, an apology was offered. I'm really sorry but if an establishment takes the bookings, then they should have the staff to deliver adequate levels of service.

Had an early dinner on a lovely sunny evening. Giant Yorkshire pudding was fabulous but the Cajun Chicken was a bit spicy for my wife. Excellent service and great prices....

We stopped here for an early dinner with our young children. It was a lovely day and the outside is really designed for children- a playground and a Football field. We had the steak pie, scampi and chips and the children had chicken nuggets. All food was great, staff friendly and welcoming. Prices were reasonable. Sadly we found this place on our last day- but we will return when back in the Lake District!

The food here was excellent, and the place had a really warm and welcoming atmosphere. The bar was very busy, and we loved that it was dog friendly too, but we wanted dinner, so we sat in the separate restaurant area which was quieter and more relaxed.

We sat outside in glorious sunshine and enjoyed our meal here. Food was good. Service was good. The outside area was very pleasant (although may be less so in less wonderful weather than we enjoyed!)

Normal lunch menu with large portions. Quite good value for money with very friendly staff. We also stayed for the quiz which was good fun. Dog friendly.

Service was poor to begin with. Two of the meals were very scanty and poorly presented. Mushy peas were cold on the fish and chips, the fish portion was small and mainly batter while the chips were again small and of poor quality. The scampi and chips were equally scanty and the pea accompaniment (no garnish) was “tired”. My burger was over cooked but quantities good. Sweet potato fries nice try but soggy.

A very busy Pub & Restaurant with wonderful, helpful and friendly staff. The decor is very traditional old country inn with Low doorways! The best in this large remote area.

Reccommended but we were disappointed. Very busy and food was rather basic pub grub - portions bit too big too.

Once we found it! Well worth the effort. However a word of warning. Eskdale is quite a large area and the google map,is rubbish. We followed the signposts to Eskdale and found ourselves driving in the narrowest of roads, meeting the biggest cars coming in the other direction, and going over humps and bumps when you couldn’t see where the road went.......really scary. It really should come with warning signs.

We had been walking the eskdale river and decided to call in at the bower house inn as it advertised Sunday lunch all day. What can be special about Sunday lunch you may think but I have to say the beef, mash, roasties and yorkie puds were lovely but the vegetables ( which I usually hate and leave) were fantastic. Cauliflower cheese, sauté carrots and sautéed cabbage with with spices. I ate cabbage for the first time in my 54 years. We then ordered puddings, one of which was home made strawberry cheesecake. When it was served the waitress apologised that it wasn't fully set as it had just been made, I have to say it was the most scrumptious strawberry cheesecake I've ever tasted....obviously a very good chef and hats off to them

Burgers are quite expensive compared to the fast food chains but they are worth every penny. They have a really great selection of burgers and the fries are delicious... Deserts are unfortunately the
