We booked our table but this is not necessary. The dinning area is laid out with only 2 individual tables the rest are 8-10 seater tables where groups occupy one end or the other sharing with other couples/groups during busy periods. Service was very slow - order to food arrival was 40 mins but the food was freshly prepared and hot. Standard steak, burger, fish and chips, scampi and chips range and some excellent deserts. Nice atmosphere if a little spartan.

We had a lovely relaxing time at Bovey's Down Farm, beautiful scenery and everything we needed right here. Close to the beaches and sea side towns, supermarket 10 minutes away and a good Chippee! ,in The local town. Clean and tidy showers and toilets. This is not a fancy, all glitter and gold but good honest rustic camping as it should be. We had a home cooked Sunday roast with a lovely apple and blackberry crumble, ( proper Yorkshire puddings) , service was excellent and food fabulous, to send us on our way a full English! Both Pam and Gerald are a lovely couple, homely and very welcoming , down to earth folk. Their prices are very reasonable and there is a bar, if you have the farm cider as Gerald advised sip it slowly, thank you both for a lovely long weekend. Andrew and Pauline

Had a delicious roast dinner with beautifully cooked chicken and gammon. The veggies were tasty and the roast potatoes were the best I’ve had! The fact that everything could be made gluten free was the icing on the cake, or the custard on the crumble which was equally fantastic! We very much enjoyed our stay at the farm and Pamela's famous cream tea - so good in fact we ordered a second one! I was a bit sceptical - despite Pamela's friendly insistence - that the cream should come first, but she's right: jam should indeed come on top of the cream when it's clotted. Sitting in their shaded outdoor terrace overlooking the gently sloping fields, it felt like an idyllic Devonshire tea experience, down to the delicate chinaware and the pretty floral arrangement. We also enjoyed our chats with her husband Gerald who is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to life on a farm and has a great sense of humour to boot. The farm is well-situated for hikes to the nearby coast and rolling Devon countryside and our walks along the specutacular coastal paths have made me hungry for more! The campsite itself feels like a haven far from the madding crowd, rustic and charming with even more amenities than we made use of. Their open timber hall looks like a lovely place for ceremony. I can warmly endorse the recommendations I've read elsewhere on this page - both Pamela & Gerald are an absolutely delightful couple who helped to make our stay at Boveys Down Farm an unforgettable experience. In fact, we not only had a second cream tea, on our way back to Dover, we also went back for a second taste of the campsite which truly felt like a home away from home. Pamela & Gerald are both real gems, and so is Boveys Down Farm. It will be on our itinerary again when we pass through this part of England. Judi & Rudi Utrecht, the Netherlands

We called in for a cream tea, of which we have had many with which to compare, but sadly this one was not up to scratch. The tea is fine, but cream in individual pots is not very nice, it was a bit hard, the jam in a little individual glass pot, but the main event, the scone, was undercooked and tasted so. I did advise the member of staff who served us, but all she said after charging us the full price was that the cook had probably taken them out of the oven too soon. No refund. Sadly we will not be going back.

A reasonable price and the tea was served in willow pattern cups but for perfection the jam and cream must not be served in portion controlled jars and packets and I think the scone should only be warm if it has just come out of the oven rather than a microwave.

We came to Boveys down farm last July to camp and we had such a lovely time that we recommended to family& friends and then returned this year. However, we were so disappointed upon our return. We pitched up where we did last year, only to be told we had to move as there was an upcoming wedding so the grass needed to recover which we understood. However, the field we were told to move to was cramped and next to a loud and busy road. If we knew that we would not be able to camp where we had previously we would have not wanted to return. The campsite owner did not offer any help with moving our tent as we carried it across 2 fields. We felt that the owners were impolite and unfriendly. There was no information given to us pre arrival. Additionally you are required to pre book the showers and you are not able to choose your camping pitch. What we loved most about Boveys down farm was the relaxed atmosphere, the freedom to choose your pitch and the beautiful views. Unfortunately this year we did not have the same experience.

We had a wonderful week at Bovey Farm. Pam and Gerald go above and beyond to help. It can get busy particularly with staycations this year, the additional Covid 19 cleaning measures and you will need to work at the pace of the farm rather than our busy life - this is why we go in the first place. This campsite is not a highly commercial operation It is a working farm. The campsite and facilities are rustic and offer a real camping experience. We had a wonderful afternoon tea and a pie one evening which was great. Pam is happy to sell you anything you have forgotten from milk to flour and is really accommodating so just ask. Amazing views and 10 minutes drive from both towns and beaches. Our second visit to the campsite and still a warm welcome for my family.

Rustic in terms of setting and decor but extremely friendly staff and food was delicious. We had been meaning to visit for a long time, having sampled the farm’s pies, pasties and hamburgers at other places. Meat was very tasty. Portions good. We felt that £12.50 for the roast was a fair price, about on a par with other locations in the area. Desserts were a very reasonable £4.60.Would be tempted not to microwave puddings that have been chilled as they become super hot, slightly soggy and cream just doesn’t work so well but that is a minor thing and I only make this comment because the quality of the food is very good, nearly all homemade and it is a shame to let it down.A drinks menu would have been useful and a wider choice of soft drinks, perhaps some bottled local juices. Only dropped a star because the outside and surroundings let things down a little.

We can only say great things about this place . We stay in one of the retro caravans for hire . In a space on its own in a Woody Glade it's cosy in any weather ! Pam always puts pumfy bedding in so don't need to bring it which is great . We looked about for ages to find a natural campsite in this area . This is the one as the views of the valley coming through the gate is a beauty . Spacious and informal . Easy to get a pitch last minute and without fuss . The owners are both laid back and attentive . Even after a busy day we noticed a family who were tired after a big walk , given a home cooked meal at 9 pm .. kind and blinking impressive we thought . If no one was about in the restaurant area we figured that it meant they were busy in the kitchen so learnt that there's a bell just inside the door . Great that you can go for a weekend and get provisions , meals etc all onsite . Brill area for such quiet and lovely cycling . Ask Pam for her carrot cake and have a drink with farmer Gerald in his bar . Love it .

Upon arrival we booked in and paid for all of the pitches to be told by the young lad on the bar that food would be closed at 8pm that evening, of course we went back set up and then went to order our food to be told there was no food as they were preparing for the farmers market the next day and the kitchen was closed................dissapointing to say the least as our friends had travelled from manchester to sample the cream teas and pasties that we had told them about for years. how embarassing. Ok so second time around, can you believe it it happened again, we were told no food and there was no-one around (the place was deserted) to ask if food was on that night, yet again they could have told us over the phone. A young family that were camping there had said to us that because of buliding work ongoing in the kitchen the food was hit and miss, you may or may not get any. Also a family of six including two small children followed in behind and were told the same, the kids were hungry but no good. There was no staff around to ask and Gerald (i think) dissapeared of out in his van????It's a real shame as prevoius times everything was just greatBovey farm youv'e let yourself down, and lost customers.

Handy to have microwave, fridge, and laundry facilites available. The barn cafe area was lovely and we enjoyed the cream tea, especially the charming old crockery it was served in. Boveys Down Farm was an absolute gem of a find, we had gone to Otter Nursery but unfortunately their restaurant was closing. We were all disappointed as we all really fancied a cream tea. On our way back to Kings Down Tail Campsite we saw a sign on the side of the road for cream teas. We pulled in and down the hill we saw “The Swallows Rest” where we were greeted by the lovely Pam and we ordered four cream teas. We were all blown away when the scones came out, they were hot from the oven. We had four choices of homemade jam and even honey, loads of fabulous clotted cream and a really nice pot of tea. We were all so impressed that we all went back the next day with two of our friends and ordered six cream teas. Unfortunately Pam only had ten scones left but she told us if we wanted to wait 20 minutes she would cook some more. We were served our ten scones by Gerald, whose photo was on the wall with Prince Charles and the time just flew by waiting for our other two scones, listening to how he met him last year. A fabulous couple and probably the best cream tea I have ever had and I have had a few. We will be back when we are down in Devon again and next time we will try Pam’s Sunday Roast and of course have another of her cream teas.

I spotted this hidden gem as I cycled past one morning. Later that day I took the family back for a cream tea and we weren’t disappointed. Probably the best cream tea we’ve ever had. Warm scones, crispy outside, soft inside. Loads of clotted cream, three types of jam (raspberry, strawberry, black currant) and honey. Two of us chose cakes: a beautiful lemon tart and a really light Victoria sponge. Friendly service and good value. Yes, it’s on a picnic bench under a gazebo, rather than on a manicured lawn, but it’s well worth the visit.

Saw the sign and dropped in. Plenty of other reviewers have described the building, the scones, the company and all we can say is yes, agree, yes, agree, yes agree. Just wanted to add that I gave up looking for real scones years ago..... anything in a shop will be full of baking powder and you can taste it Yuk!. Then there is the added fruit.... that's a no-no if you are having a proper cream tea.

We stayed as a group of 6 adults in the glamping tent. Pam and Terry thought of everything, even down to a complimentary bottle of bubbles in the fridge. The deco in the glamping tent was just beautiful! We loved cooking BBQ's in the evening and enjoying the beautiful English country views from our outside table and chairs. Couldn't recommend this highly enough - a true gem! The cream tea's were just delicious. 10/10!! Thank you for having us - we will be sure to come back one day! :)

No me decepcionó.

Muchas gracias.

Never judge a book by its cover, this may not be a quaint tea room you would expect. But don't be fooled the staff are exceptionally friendly, the cream tea is five star. I've never had so many choices of preserves or so much clotted cream.

I have given some thought to writing this review as I take seriously the comments I make - I was doing a two day camping trip with my sister this weekend just gone and she had booked Bovey Down Farm as our site for the visit. I hadn't read up much about the farm but the little I knew gave me the feeling it would be quite a rustic affair and perhaps for me something I might not have chosen. HOWEVER after arriving and staying two nights I was absolutely taken with the whole package. The campsite is small and to a degree left as nature intended, the amenities are as you would expect showers/toilets/ etc and all clean and functional, what cannot be expressed on an internet site is the effort and personality that welcomes you from the proprietors Pamela and Gerald who absolutely make the place. Quirky is the word I would use and it is meant as a big compliment. Every little need has been thought about from the freezers for your icepacks, to Microwaves, fridges and all the little bits you might need to help you enjoy your camp, and as an added bonus Pamela runs a fantastic kitchen from which she produces breakfast, lunch and dinner for those who feel the need, to a takeaway service of home cooked produce including amazing cream teas which are possibly the best I have tasted, and home made pasties, fish and chips and a wide range of takeaway suppers. They are true diamonds, dedicated to the business they run and I found the whole atmosphere extremely warm. I left with a sense of wanting to return for another super camping experience away from the rat race of modern day life. There were even facilities provided for fires and BBQs - nothing was too much trouble. A recent addiiton has been added to the site in the shape of a beautiful wooden structure designed for wedding ceremonies in the woodlands. This place is quite unique and truly a labour of love.

For many years my Wife has wanted to call in for a cream tea and while we had friends with us we gave it a try. The establishment was very strange being a barn type building with "rustic " decor. The waiter, Gerald, was unusual wearing a cap and dark apron looking like a farmer which in fact he is, he was extremely likeable with a wicked sense of humour. We had to wait for the scones to cook but well worth the delay. His Wife came out to see if evrything was OK and we asked if they did Sunday Lunches, what would you like she said, surprise us we replied. We turned up at 1.30 and had a wonderful meal wirh beef reared in the next field. Cant wait for the next visit.

Having seen the signs for the cream tea at the side of the road we decided to pop in and give it a try. On first impressions it seemed a little ramshackle but we didn't let that put us off - we had the nicest cream tea EVER! All served in lovely china and laid out beautifully. The scones were made fresh so brought to the table lovely and warm. The clotted cream was a delight and served with honey, strawberry jam and blackberry jam. We got a nice big pot of tea and hot water so you could have more tea if you wanted to. We were made to feel welcome and Pam and Gerald chatted to us and were incredibly friendly. We had the dog with us and they made a fuss of him and provided him with a bowl of water which was kind. Pam told us that they're currently converting the cow shed into a tea room which I'm sure will be lovely when finished and a lovely place for her to serve her glorious cream teas! We loved it so much we went back for another today as we're going home tomorrow. Pam and Gerald welcomed us and were pleased to see us again. The cream tea didn't disappoint and we scoffed the lot! You get a lot for the £6 (each) so it's excellent value for money. We also purchased a large homemade steak and ale pie for £6.50 which we had for dinner tonight and it was really tasty! Such a lovely little place and a bit of a find! It's worth noting that Pam offers the cream tea as a take-away as a lady arrived when we were there on our first visit and she left with a box so you could purchase one and drive it to the coast to enjoy by the sea... how very lovely! :o) If you're in the area on holiday or just passing through make sure you stop here, it's LOVELY!

If you think the cream teas are the best, you must try Pam and Gerald's aberdeen angus pies they are to die for. We have spent a week camping at Bovey Down Farm with friends and family and have had a really great time. Pam and Gerald were most welcoming and very friendly. We sampled the cream teas and on our last night Pam and Gerald cooked us all a lovely supper - serving up pies and steaks with home made bread (much cheaper than a pub meal - we drank our own wine and beer). The pies were so good we brought some to take home and now we wish we had brought more.Thank you Pam and Gerald.Sarah, Melvyn, Hannah (Dunstall), William, Jess (Cole), Tracey and Maisey (Harmes)

After looking on tripadvisor for a cream tea, my partner found this one with it's couple of 5* reviews, so we decided to check it out. We found the turning easily enough, and drove across a field containing caravans down to a farm building with a tarpaulin covering a number of tables and chairs.Thinking we had stumbled into an English version of Deliverance, we questioned if we had the right place, until the owner appeared and asked if we were here for a cream tea. We said yes, and sat down at a table with mismatched chairs and cutlery. When the cream tea turned up, we were amazed. The scones were HUGE, 2 each, there was a massive dollop of clotted cream and two bowls of jam (The photo on this page is small in comparison). My partner had enough tea for three cups. The quality of the scones, jam and cream was also of the highest quality. The quiet setting surrounded by trees and fields grew on us and the two staff were friendly and charming. At £5 a head it was also cheaper than some much poorer teas we had on holiday. The next time we are down in Devon visiting my parents, we will be sure to pop in again for a great afternoon snack!

We found Bovey Down Farm quite by accident at 6.30 on a Saturday afternoon on the early May bank holiday. We really weren't sure that they'd still be serving, but were given a warm welcome and had chairs and tables moved around to accommodate our large party in the early evening sunshine. The cream tea was the best we've ever tasted. The scones were baked for us and served with the tastiest jams and honey that was truly the finest any of us had ever had. I would heartily recommend anyone who finds themselves in the area to make sure that they find Bovey Down Farm and avail themselves of their wonderful fare!
