I love this place! 🍲 I love their borscht! 😋🥰😋🥰😋🥰😋🥰 We come here often! 👫🏼💕 For some reason, there are a lot of specially written negative commentaries here. But you need to realize that the restaurant is Russian cuisine, but it has nothing to do with the Russian government. They just cook dishes that are common in Russia. Food is just food!

Being unfamiliar with Russian cuisine, we decided to give Borshtch N Tears a try, after a friend recommended it. Our server was very patient and explained the dishes, as well as the various beer selection. Unable to decide the great selection, we settled on sharing 2 mains and a dessert. The beef/pork dumplings were very tasty and not too 'doughy' and the cabbage rolls were small and compact but punched a flavour. Our dessert was a fabulous cheese 'pancake', which was just the right size and was accompanied by an amazing homemade 'jam'. The No 7 Russian beer complemented the whole meal. With regards to service, he was very friendly, tolerated my bad joke and extremely helpful. This was a first for us and we're already looking forward to our next visit with a group of friends.

We booked a table on Saturday evening although there was no one in the place. We had a plate of borsh and mushroom soup (about £15 each), and even with added bread I was hungry after as the portion was small. There was a musician singing very outdated songs of 70s, 80s. The experience was disappointing and odd.

It was the first Saturday night in December. The WestEnd was packed , the pavements horrendous and it was cold and it was raining. We called and made a last minute reservation for dinner somewhere warm, where we knew the food and wine would help us recover from our failed attempts at Christmas shopping. We got to Borshtch & Tears at 7.45 and were glad to get seated immediately. The hospitality and warmth were just what we needed... so was the rye bread, vodka and my first taste of a Russian beer! The lightly pickled herrings with tiny new potatoes were delicious as was my partners choice to again order the Russian Salad in a pastry case... I had the deliciously comforting pork rolled in cabbage leaves served in a tasty light broth... I was so involved with mine, I don't think I even noticed what my fast eating partner woolfed down before I could try some! We shared a gorgeous honey cake followed by a Horseradish Vodka for me, and a Chilli spiced Vodka for him before bracing ourselves for the icey conditions outside. Another fabulous night at what has become a real favourite restaurant. I am so looking forward to going back before Christmas!!!

Excellent!! We had such a fun evening on date night! All the food was superb, the lamb rice dish had the most amazing flavours as did the borscht! This is a chef who knows how to make a stock without the help of Knorr!! The recommendation of a Georgian deep red wine was delicious.. Excellent service, live fun music with a mainly Russian theme.. Honestly...I am so looking forward to going back! I just wish I could remember the name of the lamb and rice dish!! I want to try making it at home!! LGBT friendly too...

Exactly 2 years to the day I returned. And wow, even better than the first time! And the lovely man in charge remembered me! Wow, that's customer service for you! The atmosphere and service were brilliant. I loved it. Absolutely no rushing. We were there for 3 hours, and the food came out gradually, rather than all at once, which made it a lot more enjoyable. They had a brilliant live Russian band. So it was good to have a drink, have amazing food and listen to the music without feeling rushed! The gentleman in charge and serving us was absolutely on top of his game. A lovely man. Very helpful, and nothing at all was a problem. The homemade vodkas were absolutely delicious. I went for the strawberry, sour cherry and Horseradish. And wow, if you've never had horseradish vodka, you really need to try it! Food Black Russian Rye bread with Garlic butter - very fresh and moorish. Starters Salad Olivier - Extremely fresh and absolutely delicious. Siberian Pelmenni beef/pork with Broth - Wow. So delicious. Chiboureki - Absolutely delicious meat filled Pasty. Herrings under a blanket - I could have eaten 5 portions! Blini with Wild Mushrooms/cream - so moorish! Wow! Mains Manti with Fried potatoes with Mushrooms/onions - I could have eaten this all day and night! Beef Stroganoff - oh my! You have never ever ever tasted Stroganoff like this. So rich and tasty. Dessert Napoleon cake - So delicious Honey cake - Wow. --- All three of us absolutely loved it. Without doubt this has to be the best Russian restaurant for food and atmosphere in the U.K. Would strongly suggest you go here really hungry and thirsty, Order lots of different dishes, and if you drink, you must try the vodkas!

Seriously, if you want to eat Russian take a plane to St Petersburg and pick the first restaurant you find. It'll be thousand time better than borsh and tears. It's a typical London restaurant where you have average food that becomes overpriced. This place is ultra noisy because they have a kind of band that plays some kind of music. Worst part is that this music is not even Russian. We had even Spanish music.. A real shame. Food wise, the biggest disappointment comes from the fact they don't serve caviar and their standard vodka is over priced...... Some good points though : kudos for the cook because the food is good but in small quantities. This place has some Russian guest as well. I'm definitely not going back.

I first visited this restaurant in 1975 and have returned regularly throughout the years. I was last here five or six years ago, and the meal was average; but I returned recently out of loyalty, hoping that I had hit an "off night" back then. Unfortunately, after dining here last week, I think I have made my last visit. The bellinis were no longer plump little pancakes, but suspiciously similar to something you would buy from the frozen food aisle of Sainsbury's. The Chicken Kiev was tasteless, and the Beef Strogonof was so salty so as to be nearly inedible. Also, this place is incredibly expensive, especially considering the quality of the food. However, I must say, the staff were pleasant and helpful.

Reasonably priced although not inexpensive and fairly varied menu with all the typical appetizers, soups (borsch of course), russian salads (herring under fur coat), bliny, and mains (golubtsy).

I visited this restaurant with several friends to introduce them to Russian food (being a Russian myself) which unfortunately instead turned out to be an introduction to a new level of disappointment. First of all, the food portions were very small. The main meals can be compared to the size of an entree at any other restaurant. As an example I ordered Plof (Rice dish with meat) which came in a small pot with barely any meat. Half of the bowl was also taken up by a large garlic, leaving very little to eat. Nevertheless, I must complement the food quality which is very good and is made in true Russian style. Now for the tears. The tears first appeared once we looked at the menu prices and again once we got the bill. No idea how a small rice dish can cost £15. My only conclusion is that the rice is imported from the motherland itself using express post flown by gold-plated Aeroflot aircraft. Also if you order Vodka or any spirits prepare to cash out. However, once again, the Nastoika (home made vodka) is of good quality and is made using traditional Russian recipes. There is also an automatic 10% gratuity added to the bill. Is that really necessary? How about you let the customers decide how much gratuity (if any) they wish to pay. The restaurant had live music, which provided a very good and fun atmosphere. However, as with anything these days it comes at a cost. £2.50 per person to be precise. Int he scheme of things the cost is very little and I have no issues at all paying a bit extra to support the artists, however, given the already high prices it shouldn't be necessary. It should also be noted that half the restaurant was booked for a wedding and all the music was directed towards that. Hence, it would seem even more unjustifiable to charge each person that £2.50. Overall, the restaurant offers a traditional Russian experience which comes at a cosmic price, even for London. Given the atmosphere and good food quality this restaurant it is worth a visit if you wish to try Russian food. However, at the same time, there are many other good quality restaurants in London that offer way better value for money.

Went there on Wednesday and Friday night. My wife is Polish so she is well aware of Slavic culture. I am surprised by what people are complaining about. I must say, the service was exceptionally well. Olga and Bogdan treated us very well.1. Drinks. Overpriced wine? I wonder why would you order wine in a Russian restaurant. Try ordering Beer in a French restaurant. On the other hand, try their range of Vodkas and Beers. Not expensive for Vodkas at all and reasonable price for Beer. I also saw someone complained about lack of options for Alcoholic drinks. Did you check their Vodka menu? Two pages on Vodka only! Also, you might think shot of Vodka is expensive but this is a Russian/European shot not a tiny British shot. This is a 50 ml shot we are talking about, which is called a "double shot" in UK.2. Live music. Some people are complaining that it was loud. Well I have attended numerous Russian and Polish musical events and I can tell you this is how the culture is. Do not expect a soft classical touch. It's loud and energetic so be ready to get out of your comfort zone. The musicians were actually fine, they took my requests and played the songs.3. Food. Portions were not small at all. The food was delicious and perfect! I have eaten homemade Slavic (Russian and Eastern European) food and I can assure you it is almost like homemade. The food is actually served very hot which is good. I would recommend you their Borscht, my wife loved it.4. Waiter and Manager Dress Code. This is not a fine dining restaurant so why would you expect waiter or even manager to wear a suit? Waiters and waitresses were wearing black which makes senses but Bogdan, the manager wear a t-shirt. Don't see any problem with that as long as the service is nice. I had a chat with him, apart from his decent and friendly service, he is a good person to have a chat with.5. Decor. Some people complaining that the fact that it is Red. Go to Russia or Eastern Europe, Red is a common colour of choice for interiors there.Highly recommended for a trip to mini Russia!

Brilliant restaurant, great fun and delicious Russian food. Prices ok for Central London and portions are HUGE! I have no idea why some reviews said it was small because when the starters came they were like main courses. I lived in Russia for 5 years and this is totally authentic high quality Russian food. Really friendly staff and great atmosphere. There wasn't music the night we went (Music Friday & Saturday and all week in December) but again I read a review with people complaining you had to pay. It's only £2.50 per person and this is very normal in Russia. Dishes we tried, Borscht (of course) - delicious, lamb and pork shashlik - also perfect, cooked on a traditional grill, all of the different dumplings - all cooked to perfection, chewy when they should be, soft on the potato ones, and... Chicken Kiev - amazing crispy and tasty. We also got a bunch of starters such as pickled vegetables and olivia. Wine to so expensive for London, we were drinking beer and prosecco (£30 a bottle seems ok). We came at 7pm and left at 1am. Never hurried and made totally at home.

The bill includes 10% staff gratitude but the service was not worth that much of money. Food was ok although portions could be bigger for the price stated. Would not recommend.

Went here with a group of 5 friends, all Slovenian. The food is alright, but it is overpriced by a lot. Portions are tiny and the menu offers very little option, especially for vegetarians. Wine was served by glass and for two glasses we payed more than 20 pounds, even though it wasn't particularly good wine. Half a glass of Jack Daniels cost about 8 pounds.... Not a wide selection of alcohol or cocktails. Bad atmosphere and rude service. The waitress rushed us with the bill, and the atmosphere doesn't allow for talking without the few people who go there listening on you. Very disappointing!

I went out with four of my friends - four Russians and one Polish. All started with a really small table for five people to sit. The menu did not have a big choice of dishes and same was for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, which was a disappointment. Nonetheless, I ordered Solyanka (GDP 10.95). The portion which was brought to me was awfully small, especially for that amount of money! One of my friends ordered pancakes with mushrooms and she was brought one pancake which was cut into little pieces, probably in attempt to take up the space! Also we ordered two glasses of wine which costed us about 20 GDP. At the end of the meal, when the bill was brought the waitress hurried us all the time, so we had to ask her to wait three times. It was really rude of her. I expected our visit to be different. Really disappointed!

Food and music was great. I am strongly recommend chicken sashlik it was amazing. They charge for music. They have a bit communication problems even we didn't ask for the bill they bring one, apparently table next to us was asking the bill for several times.

Went with a large party for 50 th birthday celebration. The band was excessively loud and really impeded communication despite our pleas. The food was odd, starters were on table in arrival and all slimy apart from the small salad garnish, one starter was akin to catfood inside a bread roll. Soups were unpleasant. Main course lamb skewer was the only course which was appetising and this prevented me leaving hungry. Service slow. We arrived at 7.30 and the mains came after 11. On a positive note the toilets were clean and a blond waitress seemed pleasant and efficient. The raspberry vodka proffered on our departure suppressed my tickly cough for some time. Will not be returning

A terrible ending to a good night in Borshtch and Tears, when we were charged for dancing to a few songs by a live band! We brought live performance and live in a dull and lifeless mood and atmosphere and were brought a check for £20 for listening to music for 20 minutes, we haven't even dined at a place! I do not recommend this establishment to anyone, as a mere request to explain the charge turned into an argument and a harassment from staff, who by the way were very unprofessional and acted as vultures preying on the only customers in the restaurant!

Food was really resembling that in Russia. Especially Solyanka. Shashlyk and chiken kotlety. Waitress is very friendly and cute. And the service was very fast. Overall impression is great. I'd recommend this place to those who is up to for a decent not overpriced Russian cuisine.

Six problems to start with: 1) the chef forgot to prepare one of the main courses 2) the waitress forgot to pass the order on for another of the main courses 3) the flavoured vodka given to us free as an apology tasted of children's medicine 4) the replacement dish was inedible 5) the crooner with the electric guitar was too loud 6) the restaurant refuses to take much off the bill until finally giving in under pressure. So what started well ended badly. The waitress was nice and apologetic, so not all bad. But we won't be going back.

This makes the second time I have been to Borscht & Tears. I was there last night and sat at the table by the window and the musicians with a friend. The food was really nice, especially the Pelmeni. The blinis were very good too. I like decor of the restaurant, reminding me of being in St Petersburg and Moscow. Apparently, all the Soviet spies used to dine here during the Soviet Union era.The live music really makes the place. When I was here almost a year ago, I was with my friend from Latvia. One of the girls at the next table was from Latvia as was her friend. Her boyfriend arrived and he treated us to Russian champagnski plus some lovely food. I loved it.I will be back soon

On tony Beauchamp Place, Borshtch 'n' Tears is an institution. The food and service is outstanding. We always get there as about the first diners, so Bogdan treats us very well. Some changes in September, 2015 - they have hookah pipes outside and Russian karaoke in the cellar. The karaoke can be loud and discordant but adds to the fun atmosphere. If you want the full Russian-Ukrainian experience arrive after eight. The chicken Kiev is outstanding!

This restaurant is like going back in time to the 70's. The ambience was terrible. It was all very intimidating. And there were only two tables taken on a Saturday night! The music was far too loud and the singer got all aggressive about requests. How can you charge London prices and still use paper napkins? The food was actually fine but that did not make up for the experience. The bill was hand written. I haven't seen that in a very long time! And the manager, not the waitress sorted out the payment. He had dressed nicely in a dirty, ill fitting T shirt! All round very disappointing. No wonder local Russians go elsewhere.

Food was ok, but too expensive. The awning outside needs replacing. There is no menu or prices displayed outside. A distinct lack of lighting and a little bit dingy inside. But the biggest grievance were the 2 undescribed items on the bill. Maybe one of the undescribed items was for the singer/guitarist. There was no dessert menu except in Bogdan's mind. Bogdan was a friendly guy though.

We visit this Russian restaurant every time we are in London. Last year it was closed and there was a sign in Russian in the window. Did not help us, but their kitchen had cratered and had to be completely redone. After being out of business for over five months, they reopened in March 2014.Bogdan is still running the place with his usual cynical Russian charm. The food is outstanding. If you go after 8PM, the place turns totally raucous Russian. Before that, you can have a quiet meal with outstanding service.Highly recommended.

This quiet little restaurant was recommended to us by a frequent London traveller, and did not disappoint. The menu was solid, but tasty, the music quiet and appropriate and the street was classically london. It's not the easiest to get to, but well worth the hunt. Na Zdrowie!

This was a favourite restaurant of ours years ago, so for a special commemorative occasion we thought we'd go there again.I rang to book. No answer. Rang again and left a message on the booking answerphone, which said they'd return the call. They didn't.It got to the day before so rang twice again, once again asking for the booking and to have my call returned. No answer/ return call, or anything. On the day went by the place to search for signs of life; there were none so we went elsewhere.Weird.

I have such great memories of this restaurant. I was a flight attendant and our crew hotel was in Kensington. This was a favorite of our crews. Always fun and great food. The location is the best, Beauchamp Place is legendary. When in London it's a definite must to visit. The question as to when I visited, I had been back in 2012, but too many times over the years to count.

Have been a regular at this place for years. Nice to hear Russian speech and listen to the music, especially when you miss home. The amount of Russian people there says it all- can't be bad when so many Russians go there regularly. And not only Russians, my English friends love it too!Amazingly good food, my favourite is Shashlik- skewers of meat with onions and cabbage. They do great homemade style potatoes with mushrooms- very tasty. Seledka pod shuboy- herring salad with beetroot another favourite of mine. And Olivier- Russian salad. Not a fan of soups in general, but my friends always order Borshtch or Solyankla- both are really good. And had the most amazing Napoleon cake there last time- try it!Vodka shots come in frozen shot glasses and there are many flavours, try it for fun, especially if you are non- Russian and want to try something different. All in all, one of my favourite places to go for dinner to. Great atmosphere, gets crazy sometimes with people dancing around and loud music, but that's the beauty of it, it's unique and fun! Go, go, go!

I had a very enjoyable night out here with two friends recently, and couldn't really fault the place. The plov dish was superb, not as good as homemade plov, but the best I've had in London. Better than Samarquand, which I where I usually go for plov. In fact, I called B&T a few weeks later to order it for takeout, and they'd sold out! Even the Georgian wine, which I usually find heavy, complemented my dish well and was a great recommendation from the waiter. The service was friendly, and the best part was the live music. A guy in the corner strumming Russian classics, watching us three mad girls clap and whoop, lots of fun! Decent value for money, esp when compared with other similar restaurants such as Samarquand or Mari Vanna.Only downsides of B&Tare that the loo was a bit cramped and the restaurant was almost empty, so not much of an atmosphere. But I would definitely go again for a lazy dinner and live music, then pop into Nozomi across the road after for cocktails.

Fun and irreverent. A small place on Beauchamp Place in London, Borshcht n' Tears (they contend it is London's oldest Russian restaurant - since the '60s) is incredibly "flexible" with opening times. Usually it opens at 6PM M-T-W, then it opens at 3PM on Thursday to take advantage of after shopping drinkers. Family-owned, the on-site manager has a dry sense of humor - maybe that is real Russian. The server is usually a very attractive and attentive Eastern European young woman - maybe Russian. But all that is beside the point. The Chicken Kiev is very good. The service is excellent. The prices are not cheap... after all it is on Beauchamp Place a couple of blocks from Harrods. They are often out of champagne, so you might have to go with Slovenian Riesling or some such. The Russian musician usually starts at 7PM or so (flexible as well). We try and visit twice every time we go to London.

Cosy place and nice musical entertainment. Service was impeccable, portions fairly small. Wine selection is mediocre and you find same selection at your cornershop. Food tastes good but it seems that something is missing. Be vary of the vodka, it's quite expensive and the owner is a bit of a grump. The staff otherwise was very friendly. The menu had a bit too much pork for our taste buds.

I found myself in Beauchamp Place with a few friends and we chose this eatery over the others having never tried Russian food.We were very impressed. The waiting staff kindly guided us through the menu, explaining the best & most popular dishes. I'm not one to be scared of unusual food, and was very impressed. The mixed meat terrine, the herring salad, the cured beef, the pancakes & dumplings were all beautifully presented, very well prepared and exactly not what I expected. Amazing food.Everyone I know always makes out that Russian food is all about stodge and cabbage, I was happy that they were wrong. The restaurant is small, tightly packed, with live music as well. The band was cranking out great music, though I couldn't understand a word. The atmosphere created was heaving, electrified, almost magical. We weren't actually drinking alcohol, so we were very aware of our surroundings. The same quality of food was going out to the other tables too, the same attention to very friendly not over the top service too. As the night got busier, the atmosphere got crazier, but the staff kept their cool. The whole restaurant was full of Russian speaking people, seemingly having a great time.I would recommend the restaurant to almost everyone, except those people that can't relax in a down to earth place, and need to feel as if they are superstars. We will be going again, taking other friends to show them what they've been missing.

Great russian restaurant, best in London in my opinion.Very good tasty and well presented food, friendly and attentive service and atmospheric live music. The restaurant is small, so you do feel as if you are squashed in like sardines, but this adds to the charm and atmosphere. Have been many a time and always leave having met new people. The food is second to none, both traditional and modern russian cooking. The drink is reasonable for zone 1, especially compared to Knightsbridge .Atmosphere is amazing, romantic when quiet, raucus and debaucherous when busy.Top restaurant for normal people but not for snobs.

We went to this restaurant for the Saturday night musicians, who are outstanding and almost made it worth putting up with the horrible service.First, we waited 5 minutes to be seated (after arriving at a practically empty restaurant, having reserved a table beforehand). For some reason, the only table available was the one right next to the musicians (as it turned out, this wouldn't be such a bad thing). Then, after the waiter seated us, we waited another 25 minutes to see him again and place our order. But that was all minor, as it turned out.Later in the evening, a guy who had been working as a waiter (and at various times both forgot our order and was unaware that the kitchen was out of a staple side dish) came by our table and demanded that we move so that he could seat more people at the table next to us. He announced that he was the owner and got into a shouting match with us, during which he tried to put one of us down based on national origin. The best part was that this guy - a non-Russian with heavily accented Russian - tried to then tell us that we (Russian-speakers) didn't "fit" in his restaurant.I found the whole scene almost comical and suggested to him that perhaps he was trying to make us feel "at home" - with the horrible customer service one might have expected in Soviet and Russian restaurants in decades past. Unfortunately his poor comprehension of Russian made it hard for him to understand the joke and he became even more angry. To be honest, I have worked as a waiter and also frequented many restaurants, and I have never seen such shocking rudeness by a restaurant (much less the owner!) to paying customers - and we did pay, resisting a strong urge to walk out on the tab. Normally that's not something that would even cross my mind, but such was the level of insult and anguish we incurred from the owner. So if you must go to this place, go on Saturday night for the music and tip the musicians, but don't spend too much...
