I come into Kington at least twice a week. I call in Border Bean and have a mug of tea before I start my shopping. I know most of the Allsorts as I lived in Kington for 30 years. There is a particularly fine cafe in Kington called the 'Border Bean' whose speciality in my humble opinion is its delicious hot chocolate which has not only flavour but real cocoa depths to savour. The large old fashioned floor to ceiling bays have old plate glass windows and give a good view of all who pass the main town junction opposite the Burton Hotel and the red brick arches of the old Market Hall with its great clock that stopped so long ago.... The town is of strategic importance as the hills start to rise here from the flat rich Herefordshire plain and their names are Saxon. Hergest Ridge, Bura, Herrick, Bradnor, delineate the edge of the invasions that drove the Christian Romano British West to mingle with the last of our more err neolithic ancestry. The hills are granite and stand proud and strong and distinct before the rounded flaky shales and thin wet acid soils that are to be found further West through the pass that crosses the Radnor Forest..I would occasionally meet Jerry the Clog here and try and get a word in edgewise to his interesting mainly freshwater aquatic observations but there was the one time that I simply was about as relevant as a fly on the wall paper due to the presence of a far younger female companion and that was the end of any hope of a conversation on that occasion. The hot chocolate was just as good as ever and in a way the entertainment of my abandonment so very human and beyond timelessness.

Simply the best hot chocolate available. I had a hot chocolate in a popular National Trust location and it clarified that many cafes simply can not make a hot chocolate. The Border Bean hot chocolate has never been surpassed in my experience. Quite simply it is possible that this cafe sells the best "Hot Chocolate" in Britain; as i am not able to afford to visit every cafe on this quest I am suggesting that we need a National Hot Chocolate competition to knock the Border Bean off its No 1 perch. Not only this but the Border Bean has a couple of daily papers for customers to read ; that it is civilised; it is not a practice that is widespread in Britain but is common in Europe and it defines for me a proper cafe; I particularly love the wooden spines that hold a paper together which used to French practice.

Yes its official The Border Bean does the best hot Chocolate with cholesterol laden extras in Kington. I understand the non cholesterol laden version ain't bad either but why would you want to spend money finding out ? As for the less vital bits, coffee, excellent, can't fault it. Food also excellent. Sensibly the food menu does not attempt to be all things to all people, its sandwiches, panninis, ciabattas, baked spuds etc with a good range of fillings, all made to order, hot or cold. To finish there is a great range of cakes etc just to ensure excessive calorie intake. I am being flippant, the calorie laden stuff is there for those of us who can get away with enjoying it, but so is an excellent range of much healthier options. Actually as my wife points out, Border Bean is a superb place to get an extremely healthy and non-flab inducing snack or full meal. All of this and service is as quick as made to order stuff can be and served by unfailingly pleasant smiley staff without making a huge hole in your wallet. What's to not like ? Word has however spread and the world already beats a path here, so they do tend to fill up at lunchtime, after which some of the menu will be finished. However better to have a more limited choice made to order, than to substitute "one I made earlier and have in the fridge". You will not get a soggy pre-made sandwich here ! Keep up the good work, Love the place.

It sounded fun & looked good - & more than lived up to our expectations. It's simply furnished, with a manageable menu whose dishes are made from locally-sourced ingredients. The staff are friendly & the food is superb. We both had the mushroom soup - home made, dairy free & delicious, served with a decent amount of good bread.

We had a delicious homemade mushroom soup with thick cut good brown bread and plenty of butter. The menu is limited and simple but the food is of an excellent quality, the staff helpful and the setting comfortable.

We ended up in Kington by happenstance after a long 8-mile walk along Offa's Dyke and Mortimer's Trail. The cafe was a pleasant surprise amidst other pretty ordinary looking places. We intended only to have lunch but stayed for coffee and cake. Best coffee we've had in ages. Staff were pleasant, even helping us to find the right bus to get us back to our B&B, no small feat in a rural area.

Been here several times. Nice coffee. Same order each time but charged different prices and short changed on the last(didn't realise until I got home). For these reasons I shan't be taking my coffee here again.

Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The menu was varied but not too much choice. We opted for jacket potato and a flat bread. Fresh and well presented.

Pleasant surroundings outside, unfortunately the food was not too a very high standard. Ham and piccalilli sandwich, ham tasteless (wafer thin and breaded, supermarket family pack springs to mind). Should have been advertised as a Piccalilli sandwich, Coffee was fine.

I absolutely love being in this place and it has a beautifully calm feel. However I am totally astonished by the dolls-house size servings for lunch- at normal lunch prices. I almost asked them if they hadn’t accidentally given me a kiddie’s portion - for a cheaper price- as for over £9 I got two slices of delicious small rye toast, about 7 very small lettuce leaves, 4 olives and a small pot of delicious dip. All very tasty but absolutely not a main course. I know I these are locally sourced ingredients but this felt really wrong. I will definitely return for post lunch coffees but will make sure to eat somewhere else where I can fuel up for lunch before hand.
