A cafe for young posh hipsters, you’ll see a lot of Clapham Home Counties blondes describing everything as “random”. The food and drink is quirky vegan. It tastes different which can be good if you want to experiment. I’m unsure if I’d describe it as good though. The staff are very friendly and prices not too bad for a try hard bohemian cafe. If you can stomach the student Union style political slogans pasted tastelessly across the frontage, you can have a reasonable meal here but you’ll only really enjoy if you fit the right vibe for this place.

An individual cafe with excellent food for vegetarians at a great price. Dined here twice in the space of three days and both times the cafe had plenty of customers. Would definitely dine here again when in the area.

Popped in here as I always do when visiting the beautiful gardens on this square. Surprised to find it almost empty. Good menu as always and excellent value for money. Will book for next weekend but stayed today for the smoothies which were epic and the conversation with the staff. There is something magical about this place as it takes me back to a time and place where London was more alternative and less commercial. Not many places left like this but so glad it's here, still doing well with exciting plans for the future.

Was looking for a BYOB place in London and came across this online. It is a lovely vegetarian restaurant by a hidden garden in London. The menu is always changing but we had some great vegan meals. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was buzzing. Fantastic value. Would highly recommend.

You have to see this place. I'm not a vegan but still enjoyed the atmosphere and coffee. Recently has been featured in that most obnoxious of papers Daily Mail as a meeting place for a Satanic Sex Cult. Anything that the Daily Rag hates, we must love.

As a vegetarian I was really excited about visiting this place due to the rave reviews. My friend and I arrived just as the first sitting were leaving - and straight away we were concerned by the utterly overpowering smell of the food as the door opened and how all the restaurant windows were absolutely pouring with condensation. It reminded me of being a student when we couldn’t afford to put the heating on! It was quite disgusting. There is clearly a ventilation issue in the kitchen and/or restaurant area. Although I love cauliflower (one of the dishes on offer that night), I don’t want the smell of it cooking (mixed with all the other veggie food) to completely permeate my hair and every item of clothing I was wearing (all had to be washed as soon as I got home, coat included!) The food was fine - ironically I ordered the cauliflower dish but it was a little uncooked and a bit tough. Unfortunately as well as the damp fug, we had to shout to talk to each other due to a table of 10 women who were shrieking non-stop as they enjoyed a pre-Xmas get together. The restaurant is small and I know the owners can’t control the noise level but it was honestly unbearable. When they got their vuvuzelas out it was the final straw and we left within an hour of arriving! It’s given my friend and I a funny story talk about as the scenario makes me laugh now but at the time it really ruined our lovely catch-up that we’d had planned. Def won’t be returning or recommending.

Loved the evening we brought our own bottle of Bubbly , the food was healthy and very tasty, it is delightfully haphazard and brilliantly bohemian. There were 2 sittings for dinner as it was pre Christmas, but although buzzing we were not rushed.

In many ways, the best thing about the Bonnington Cafe is its quirkiness. It's a former squat now turned vegetarian cafe, tucked away near a pretty square a short walk from Vauxhall station and it is clearly something of a local hub, with a community centre next door. As noted in other reviews, you bring your own alcohol and pay 50p for a glass (a bit like a corkage charge elsewhere) - tap water is of course provided gratis. There are 2 choices of starter, main and dessert - all of course vegetarian. It's cash only. It's quite a small place so you'll need to book well in advance for evenings: it's open from 12-5 and after 6.30pm and they clearly serve diners in timed sittings, which I guess they have to. We had from 6.30-8.30pm which was more than fine as service was prompt and efficient. The food was OK - not outstanding, but perfectly acceptable and at £4 a starter and £9 for a main, that's OK too just about. The dessert however was excellent: really good quality and proper restaurant fare and at £4 a real bargain! Go for the atmosphere and the quirkiness then but expect a more uneven experience of food quality.

This place was recommended by a family member who has eaten there before, and it certainly did not disappoint. We booked a few weeks beforehand and the 6:30 slot, when the place opens, was the only slot available. But it was not a problem. There is no license but you can bring your own wine, and the corkage charge is next to nothing. A simple menu offering two choices each for starter, main course and sweet: Total cost, including a tip, under £25 per person.

My daughter and I met here for lunch before visiting Tate Britain. It was such a treat and I'm amazed to see the recent bad reviews. The food (butternut squash & pak choi green curry and beetroot balls & salad) was delicious - the best vegan food I've had in a restaurant as there wasn't that post bloated feeling that can happen after over-seasoned food. The cafe itself is in a surprisingly pretty spot, seeing that it's so close to Vauxhall station.

The place was incredibly busy and there was only one waitress looking after all of the tables. We had a table booking but it took quite a long time to even be given a glass of water. The menu was all the way across the other side of the room on a chalkboard so we had to clamber infront of someones table to see what was available. We ordered a polenta filo pastry thing and it came with a few pieces of lettuce on the side. I'm usually someone to take pictures of their food, but I was so starving I ate it, however it was extremely lacking in flavour and I did not enjoy it. Still ravenous, we also ordered a chocolate pie to share, as I was too hungry to go somewhere else just for desert and we were already sat down at a "restaurant". I have never been so dissapointed when it arrived - it was like it was the very last slice, they had really tried to make the most of it last, and you could tell because it was sheet paper thin. I overheard the waitress say to a table next to us who tried to order the pie saying it had now run out.

Considering that I'm a meat eater, this is my favourite vegetarian restaurant. I've never had any food there that I didn't enjoy. The service can be a bit slow, particularly if there are several in your party and when they're full/busy, which is often. The meals are VERY reasonably priced. It is odd needing to take your own alcohol, but that adds to the value-for-money-ness (OED - please note new word/phrase!). It's also strange having two sittings - at 6.30pm and 8.30pm, but the regimen is needed in such a small seating area and their limited facilities.

It was like a miracle! I had tried to book a table the day before, as I was bringing a family group of 7 to London, 6 of them vegetarians. I'm new to this and finding it difficult to source vegetarian restaurants. Then I'd changed my mind as there was a nearer chain restaurant where I thought I might not have to book, but -disaster!- it was full when we arrived! Then I rang the Bonnington just in case and they said "Yes we can fit you in!" It was amazing, I don't know how they did it, but we got there 20 minutes later and it was packed, except for our big table just waiting to feed us.The food was mostly amazing and it's just so lovely not to have to scour the menu for meat-free options. We were able to dash out and buy a bottle of wine before the nearest shop closed thanks to the lovely waitress Maria (who worked her socks off but had a smile on her face the whole time) telling us to hurry as it would close soon. We'll definitely be going back there with my vegan nephew, for whom eating out is an almost impossible, lonely trial where you so often get treated like a kind of alien by people who, being in the food business, ought to be able to spot a growing market when they see one. I am really looking forward to going back again! Thanks so much Rachel and Maria

At the outset, let me tell you that I am a confirmed carnivore. So, to eat in a purely vegetatrian restaurant is not a prospect that I relish. It was with some considerable trepidation that I entered the Bonnington Café.The place has been tastefully designed to look like a hippy establishment from the late 1960s. I liked it. The ceiling of the inner room of the dining area is covered with old maps instead of wallpaper - I liked that as well. The food was surprisingly tasty and reasonably priced, but portions are rather small. I enjoyed my carrot and cardamom soup as well as the so-called 'baba ganoush' which was served with thin pita-type bread. The nut and caramel dessert was filling but not exceptional.I am glad that I tried this place, but missed my meat!

Came here for dinner for two. Got there around 8 and there were around 5 tables available in the room. After getting in and no one talking to me I asked one of the servers if she had a table for two. She immediately asked me without a good evening or anything " did you book?" I said no because my girlfriend had seen an article about the place without a contact or anything and we went on curiosity. She replied with "so I cant serve you, goodbye"! I have worked in hospitality for 18 years and I can understand when a server is stressed, but nothing excuses being rude! Especially when several tables are available! We just felt like we had been kicked out of the place and left... How I regret having gone there...

Bonnington is like a home away from home. Only a five minute walk from Vauxhall station, you never know who you'll meet or what you'll eat, and that's the joy! Don't forget to text in advance - even on a freezing Wednesday night, the place was rammed. There's no better "restaurant" in the area to get a sense of South London hospitality.

It was lovely to book a table by text and wait for the chef to text back to confirm the booking! Knowing that there is a different chef every day made it feel exclusive and very original. It is a delightful restaurant, simple and charming. The menu was limited but good and we could have brought our own wine if we'd wished. We went on a Sunday and the waitress was not very welcoming- she may have been new? But for such an original concept it would have been nicer to have been able to interact with the only visible member of staff. Portions were fairly small but prices reasonable so no complaint.

This was such a great recommendation from the daughter of a friend - tucked away in a little gem of a street off the Oval. It was bustling and full, there was a choice of two menus, both vegan. The food was lovely, homely, tasty. I could imagine popping in here pretty regularly if I lived nearer as it has a really welcoming feel. A table next to us was celebrating a birthday so I guess it is good for occasions too. I liked that the food is not 'chef' cooked or fancy, but tasty and wholesome. Being unlicensed, and paying by cash must help to run this cooperative, and keeps the prices very friendly. What a very contemporary, cheerful and enterprising vibe. Well worth a visit!

Met a friend here for dinner last night. Decent food but not worth a trip out of the way. The service is also terrible, as a friend warned me before I went. The menu is limited and you don't know what it will be until you arrive. You can only make reservations through text or email, not phone. Cash only ::eye roll::I got the puy lentil shepherd pie, with side salad, as did my friend. The portion size for £8 was decent but we both agreed it was just fine- nothing spectacular. Like someone else cited in a review, home cooking. I've had MUCH better vegan/veg food elsewhere. It's a very tight space and was much too warm for all the bodies packed in the space. Ventilation was seriously needed.

Bonnington Square is worth a visit in itself. An oasis in the middle of Vauxhall, where residents have planted the most beautiful square gardens and around every tree along the pavement. This atmospheric little vegetarian restaurant, set on the ground floor of one of the houses, serves delicious, reasonably priced vegetarian food. V small menu cooked by a different chef each night of the week. Always varied choice and always excellent.

Was taken here by friends for lunch. Great little find. I'm not a vegetarian so was unsure. I was wrong. Food was very tasty. Simple menu of just a couple of choices. Very good food. Very good value. Place is small so boking recommended. My understanding is that different people take it in turns to run the place and provide their own food, so if you dont know who is cooking its a bit hit and miss, but worth trying. Take your own drinks for small corkage charge.

After I texted the wrong host, Hanna was very accommodating to fit us in. Two choices for each of starter, mains and desert. Friendly, efficient service. BYOB-we just walked to Sainsbury's to get a bottle, Delicious food, large portions. Toilets are 3 flights up. £25 for two-left full. Varied clientele.Glad I followed trillian's advice.

The chefs here rotate and volunteer to cook. The cuisine is vegetarian and does depend on what day you visit but I've eaten here many times and it has always been excellent. It's situated in Bennington square, a formerly squared area in the 80s and the environs have wonderful tress, flowers and shrubs and 2 communal gardens. There is no license so bring a bottle. Perhaps also wise to book as it is popular. Really recommend this, it's quite unique!

Set menus made by different local chefs. Small place but very social and lively. The food was really good, entirely vegan and was full of surprises and taste. The rice coconut soup was excellent. We were full and could not even order a dessert! Very generous portions for ridiculous prices, great quality for quantity ratio. We will definitely come back!

Place is cute and could be so nice. Ate there on a Sunday night. Food was just so dull-starter was a pea mint soup nothing special- salad humus and falafel as a main was less than average:very dry as no dressing and no flavours at all. I ate a third of it-Dessert was a chocolate cake w banana- raw apparently which must mean no sugar nor interest. First and last time I m afraid...

Come here a lot and it's always wonderful. Service can be a little slow, and restaurant can be noisy but it's all part of the experience. Food is very reasonably priced and if they run out of a certain dish they usually offer an alternative. Great place to come for a relaxed evening.

Such a lovely place, in a really gorgeous area in Vauxhall that I didn't know existed! A really fantastic concept with different chefs daily and an ever changing menu, beautifully cooked and cared for food.Definitely book if you're going to go, we went quite early (7pm) but by 8:30 there were queues out the door.BYOB and really very cheap once in, £3 for starters/desserts and £8 for main! A serious bargain for gorgeous, vibrant and healthy food! An absolute must.

I had dinner here with three meat-eating friends and we were all blown away by it. It’s run by a collective and you book by texting whoever is cooking that night. It’s low key, very friendly and the food is fantastic. There is a limited menu on a chalk board - the night we were there it was a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts - one each of veggie and vegan. You can bring your own wine, and the restaurants provides glasses and a corkscrew. It’s pretty cheap too - around £8 for mains. I will definitely be back.

A gorgeous vintage atmosphere night or day, fabulous vegan and vegetarian food and amazing prices- not to mention bring your own bottle! Perfect for lunches and dinners, just call your cook for the day (listed on the website) and book your table. So so yummy, even my meat eating boyfriend loved it, and he is picky! Will be going back regularly :)

The three of us,all big meat eaters, were hijacked by our fourth member who is a vegetarian, to eat out at this mysterious, out of the way restaurant. At first we were very sceptical to say the least. At first sight it looked as if we were entering someone's house given the very residential setting. The inside turned out to be very bohemian. The menu though quickly changed our minds. Although there was only a choice of two starters (moroccan soup or fetata), two mains (burrito or blue cheese risotto) and two desserts (banoffee or peanut & pecan torte), we all felt we could happily go for the lot! The food was all home made and excellent, and even though I still enjoy my steaks, I will definitely be going back to this place again.

This is such a great place. Went with my parter (vegan), dad and brother (both not vegan!) and we all absolutely loved it. Found it online and booked last minute -- luckily they could fit us in, but make sure you book in advance as it fills up! The place is great -- very busy and cosy (others might say squished, but I like sharing tables with other diners!) and clearly very popular. Had to wait outside for a little bit while our table was prepared but that was fine. They have a different chef cooking each night, and the menu always offers two starters, two mains, and two desserts (with at least one of those options vegan), all for a reasonable price. Can bring your own alcohol. Hannah from Poland was cooking when we were there, and she was great. Her menu was lovely (although sadly her vegan lasagne had sold out!) and she herself was so friendly. Would definitely definitely return, and definitely recommend!

HelloAs a local to the lovely neighbourhood of Vauxhall and Kennington it is not always easy to find great food in my local area. However this restaurant/cafe is simply a gem, with incredible food, friendly staff and an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and home like. Not only are you allowed to bring your own bottle of wine to the restaurant, pay under £20 for your dinner (Seriously I have had cocktails in Soho that were more expensive then my meals here), but you immerse yourself in the wonderful history of Vauxhall Grove. I learned from an exhibition about Lambeth a few years ago that in the early eighties the one hundred houses of Bonnington Square were all squatted, forming a bohemian community from all around the world. The squat had two community gardens, a cafe, a nightclub and a newsagent. This cafe used to act as communal dining for the residents, it is incredible that it is still open today and upholding all of it's most important traditions. Check out this quick documentary if you are interested:

Prepare to be bullied, bludgeoned and beaten by *Mandarina* (not her real name) on a Saturday night. Former colleagues say she was 'let go' by the Stasi for being too soft. Food portions are miserly, and you HAVE TO take two portions, whether you want to or not. The food is actually lovely. The setting is super cute. Yet. Yet. Yet. We had to both set the table, clear it up when we went, and leave by 10.30pm (the site says the cafe is open till 11pm). I was reprimanded when my friends went off to buy booze (it's BYOB). And then to add further insult, there was some agro over whether I actually could eat my birthday cake there, even though we'd checked. We were charged for 20- even though several of our party didn't show. Luckily some random friends made up the numbers. The location is lovely.... in fact in this very house I was part of Shocking Pink, the radical Feminist Collective. The once-homely do it yourself community vibe is replaced by a North Koreian approach to service.

This vegetarian cafe in a converted residential house is worth a visit for the experience alone, and the atmosphere is usually buzzing. The food is good and the menu always changing – you’ll usually get 2-3 choices for each course. Value is excellent. And it’s bring your own alcoholic drinks so you can really get a cheap night out here. However, the service can be a bit chaotic and on the last visit we were waiting over 30minutes in the holding room upstairs despite having a reservation – but you can crack your bottle open while you wait of course, so just be prepared for that and have a great night out. Book ahead as it is often busy.

I came here on a 100% vegan menu day, and was sceptical as to how good the food was. I was quickly shown that the food was fantastic. Yoi have to book in advance, and when you arrive you understand why. It is a tiny café, with only a few people working there including kitchen and waiting staff. Sometimes you do have to ask for service of some description therefore. The food was excellent with interesting combinations and flavours and good sized portions. It is super-cheap (£3 starter or dessert, £8 main) and BYOB. you are only allowed 1 glass though, so if you want water and wine be prepared to alternate or take plastic cups!Great experience and I'm excited to go back and try a different menu.

This place usually has good food, but it is always informal and fun. Fine dining it is not, but if you are looking for a small little secret away from the commercial world of chain restaurants, this is the place. You can even be the chef for a night if you apply and do a training night first.
