Bonehead in Birmingham

Used to be way better but now it's way overpriced and everything was too salty

Unfortunately gone downhill :( Me and my Partner have been to bonehead many times and we were OBSESSED, we always look forward to coming when we’re in birmingham. We’ve ranted and raved to all our friends & family about the best chicken burger you’ll ever have and how we don’t eat chicken burgers anywhere else anymore cause they don’t top bonehead but that wasn’t the case this time. Blue cheese, where? just tasted like yoghurt and nowhere near as good or punchy and that REALLY was what made the buffalo burger perfect. Chicken was slimy and stringy which put me off tbh and the batter has 100% changed as there was no crisp and just slipped off the chicken. Tator tots and waffle fries were still good and acc were the star of the show this time which shows how disappointing the burgers were. If you’ve never been before then sure it’s a good burger but if you have tasted them before (some quality cuts possibly) then you would understand the heartache lol. My partner is a chef and could see it was changes in ingredient quality and less love for the food being put out or could have genuinely just been a bad day in the kitchen (which i’m hoping is the case). Service has also changed, we felt a bit rushed as we got asked 3 times in about 15 mins if we were ready to order when we said we weren’t so felt a little on edge. i’m an alt girlie so normally bonehead is a safe space for me but didn’t get that comfy vibe this time as idk it just didn’t seem as friendly? when i did complain about my food the server kept on asking me if i wanted to make it a complaint and idk it made me feel guilty about it ahaha which i’m sure wasn’t their intention but from a former server you don’t ask someone if they want to make it a complaint whilst they’re complaining but once again everyone has their own things going on so could of just been a bad day :/ Me and my partner don’t have lots of disposable money or time so was a treat for us and it just didn’t go the way we expected, felt like a waste of our money as we still paid for everything but hey ho. We’ll be back in Brum in a couple months so will give it a second chance and hopefully the same bonehead we love will be back to its status of best chicken burger we’ve ever had! fingers crossed :)

Unfortunately me and my partner had a mixed experience here and I ended up with food poisoning. We visited on Sunday and were sat down quickly and drink orders taken. I ordered a margarita but what I was given tasted like peaches and passionfruit, they dealt with this well and took it back and off the bill. Our food came out fairly quickly and my partner enjoyed the chicken burger they ordered. I got the thigh and leg but unfortunately when it came I was queuing for the one toilet they have. This queue took so long, I ended up going next door to cherry reds as did another woman. By the time I got back my food was warmish, I started eating and it tasted good but I was worried it looked a bit pink. I was unsure about this as it was dark inside the restaurant so hard to see for sure and since I didn't want to cause more hassle after sending back the marg I decided that I was probably just paranoid, I ended up just not eating too close to the bone to avoid areas that looked pink to me. Within the hour after I felt nauseous, this continued through the night, I got intense stomach cramps and had issues the next day so I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning from this. I know I should have sent the food back in hindsight/not eaten any but I should also not have been served undercooked chicken in the first place. I'm disappointed overall as I had heard good things about bonehead and was excited to try it but unfortunately on this occasion every element of my visit fell flat and it made me ill. I would warn against ordering the pieces as, being on the bone, these are more prone to undercooking.

Brilliant food, a friend of mine from abroad wanted to try Liquid Death and only realised it was here by coincidence. It's really on brand that they had it on sale. Only downside is it feels slightly claustrophobic when busy, and there is only one toilet. Could use just abbit more room.

I was a little reluctant to go there, because I thought it would be gross, like too fried and oily, etc. Gosh, I wish I had gone sooner! Mu husband and I went ti try the burgers and, obviously, they were the best chicken burgers I have ever had in my life! We will come back to try others options!

The wings with chill oil or whatever it’s was, was so disgusting. It was basically friend chicken with sweet oil thrown on-top. I couldn’t even finish my meal. It was so NASTY!!! The only reason I’m giving it a two is because the staff were okay.

Food was ok but service absolutely shocking from a junior member of staff who was English - after he threatened to kick out of the restaurant the English individual amongst us at the table unless he answered an emotional, confrontational/racist and politically charged question after eavesdropping uninvited on a small part of the wider conversation. Our group was made up of English, Iranian, Australian and Indian work colleagues. Manager apologised but the waiter was way out of line. If you can’t speak politely and be respectful- you shouldn’t be dealing with customers.

Absolutely top class! While I was staying at the EasyHotel across the road, I ate here 4 nights in a row. The burgers are ALL great. The Nashville fries, buffalo tater tots and cauliflower bites are must tries too! Huge shout out to the staff (especially Luke) for being so warm and friendly. The playlist is banging too!

Honestly one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten! Great music and great service!

The food was very good. The staff is nice and helpful. The sitting area was a bit small, but all in all, it was a good experience and definitely will go back.

I love bonehead, been a few times. Though I was disappointed last time because they added an 'optional' service charge. Which we were not informed of until getting the receipt. We probably would have tipped anyway but this practice has soured my experience of somewhere I really like.

Buffalo burger was incredible but the wings were mid and the chips weren’t seasoned enough.

We were all happy with our food. However one extremely rude waitress (with very long black hair) ruined the night for us. Won’t be returning.

Really nice food but not allowed to have fun… The gent that sat us down, bar lady and our waitress were all great and the food was really nice. Unfortunately, as we were finishing our food we were told to stop laughing as she didn’t want anyone to complain… we didn’t realise this was a no fun establishment. Nice food but won’t be returning.

Favourite spot in Birmingham. They serve incredible fried chicken, waffle fries and wings. Bar has a great selection of beers and the atmosphere and aesthetic is awesome, heavy metal tunes blasting all evening. The buffalo wings are incredible, 100% recommend. I return every time we visit Birmingham. 🤘

Place has a good vibe. The burgers are awesome. My go to has been Bonehead burger with Nashville fries . Never fails in it's crunch.

A cracking chick shack, wings were flavoursome, meaty and juicy, their craft beer offering was better than the nearby Brewdog. Great friendly service and a place you’d defo go back to again and again.

bonehead chicken tenders made me see the face of god

This is the second time i have been here. Last time i had a wings platter which was excellent. This time i had the leg and thigh in the bonehead seasoning with a side of parmesan tots. The food was really nice. I have had better tots and these felt like they had been frozen previously. The chicken was excellent. Nice and crispy skin and succulent meat. My mate had some strips which were very good. We had the aleoli dip which had lime in it which made it a bit sharp and the buourbon bbq sauce which was excellent. Service was quick and friendly. 2 double vodkas and the food was about 50 quid. I will revisit.

Food and beer is delicious. Helpful and accommodating when we dined in with kids. Often a wait for a table but worth it

Incredible food was like nothing I have ever eaten the chicken was juicy the bun was soft and toasted the waffle fries where just incredible and the drink menu is so good everything you want in one place and affordable

This is a great place for chicken lovers and especially those who love their rock music. Amazing chicken thigh burgers and a great selection of ales for a very reasonable price. Well worth seeking out when you’re in and around Grand Central Station.

Bonehead is close to Grand Central train station. They will keep your luggage safe in a sideroom while you tuck into one of their burgers and fries. Mind you, the front door is a bit heavy, so push hard to enter. We came for dinner before heading for a film but we ended up being late for the film as our food took 40 minutes to arrive at our table. We ended up with a greasy meal, an item that we did not order, and lots of disappointment. I don't understand the hype around Bonehead; the decor is more American bar/motorbike style, food is poorly seasoned, lack of flavours and too greasy (the fries were original-I had the cinema fries which would be the best part of the meal for me)... After reading all the great reviews, we had high hopes and were looking forward to trying it out. The quality of the food doesn't justify the price (burgers around £11 and fries about £5.5), and we won't go back again, would happily stick to our KFC.

I decided to try this place after reading the many positive reviews. I’m not sure if they were having a bad night but I can only rate my food and I was very disappointed with my food. I waited 40 minutes for the food to arrive and when it did eventually arrive, it was extremely greasy. There was a very thick coating of breading & skin on the fried chicken & the actual chicken was dry. Overall, it was a very salty meal but lacked depth of flavour. I did not like the food here and the unreasonably long wait also contributed to the low score from me. I’m glad I tried it to know what the fuss was all about but it’s not for me. If I want fried chicken, I’ll stick to making my own at home.

Love the atmosphere, the rock/punk/metal tunes and the grungy aesthetic are great. The chicken is to die for. Probably the best place for fried chicken in brum :)

The fries with coleslaw on top were a really nice touch. Chicken is high quality and great portions for the price. Will return when I'm back in Birmingham.

Come for the friendly staff, staff for the atmosphere. Despite us arriving close to closing time, we were well accomodated and desperate for food. It didn't take long to get drinks and food arrived soon after. As a vegetarian, I would prefer a bean burger or similar as the fake chicken truly did taste like chicken (that's a positive for those who want it though!). The service was excellent - The wait staff are flirty but still professional. Definately come if you are in the area and give it a try!

So I was recommended to go here from another chicken lover. Arrived first I was told there was no tables upstairs and was invited to sit downstairs on one of the free large tables downstairs. I ordered wings however the spicy sauce it comes with is mayo based i asked to switch it out for regular hot sauce. In the time it took me to place my order, two girls came in and sat down at the only free table. The guy did ask them to move to one side, but I really didn't want to share as I wanted a table to myself. I then switched my order to take out. Shortly after a couple came in and was given table by one of the girls working the floor upstairs however no customers had come downstairs. I queried this as I was told there was none, yet it seems one became free why was it not offered to me the communication needs improving. I got a seat right by kitchen didn't like the seat but it was a table, my chicken wings came out with the spicy mayo i specially said I didn't want due to allergies. The kitchen messed up and lucky for me I didn't take it all the way home to be disappointed. That been said the staff are all very friendly, the wings were refunded and replaced which is very very rare for most food places, and i was offered another drink. Unfortunately the chicken was greasy, sat in little pools of excess oil so one side just over loaded with grease. Apparently they add additional oil mix after frying the chicken, yet its not described as such on the menu or told especially as I said I'm new here. I was again offered alternatives e.g strips which was nice but at this point i was fully disappointed with my experience and taste. I have had and can make better fried chicken so this will be my first and last visit. I'm in the Uber now heading to the person who recommended me we need to have a conversation as I wasn't impressed. 3 stars are for the customer care and service after they messed the food order and potentially put me at risk due to the kitchen not following very clear instructions.

I’ve waited about 5 years to eat at BoneHead (going when it’s closed COVID etc) until today, when I finally got to experience it. And, it was only good, but absolutely wonderful! The chicken so deliciously flavoured - the buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce mixed spice and cooling compliments. Everything is so well chosen, from the makeup of the slaw and tang of picked gherkins with fries, to the celery sticks provided to cool the buffalo sauce. I love, what I presume are the subtle micro critiques of K*C, being using exactly the same size corn to show what can be done, to chicken crumb that looks like the high street nonsense, but tastes a million times better. The environment oozes the interests of those who created this place - because they just liked those things. Staff are perfectly attentive and seem genuinely proud of what they contribute todo - which they certainly should be. The best eat in brum city centre for me, by an urban chicken wing :)

I’m pretty much addicted to this place at this rate. A friend of mine introduced me to Bonehead and I haven’t looked back since. They hands down serve the best fried chicken ever & I will not go anywhere else for chicken now. 🤣 The aesthetic inside is absolutely brilliant too and the staff are amazing. 11/10, probably the best restaurant in Birmingham!

10/10. Kitchen team clearly know what they’re doing and care about sending out proper chicken. Perfectly cooked and succulent - great crispy coating. Fantastic service from the waiting staff. Fair prices. Bosh!

Nice chicken burgers and wings. Staff are good. It is very small and dark. I have also tried ordering on uber since and it is constantly shut. But open for takeaway on there website, frustratingly.

So, so good. Not a reviewer but felt compelled on this occasion. Had the bbq burger, chips and chicken strips. The flavours were just so delicious/powerful- bbq sauce perhaps a bit too sweet for my liking but that’s just personal taste. Birmingham: you’re lucky to have this place.

We visited here on a whim and were very lucky to get the last table in what was clearly a very popular venue. No wonder - great selection of drinks/beer, amazing food, great music and genuinely lovely staff. Perfect.

Food is amazing, the only thing I would suggest is dont over order,,,, a chicken burger and the fries is probably enough for anyone.. of course, the wings and chicken strips are great, so probably worth the over suffed feeling from all the food..

Best chicken in Birmingham. My boyfriend and I ate more than 4 times in one week. It’s the last restaurant I went in Birmingham before returning to my home country. I hope to visit again someday!🍗💞😊

Food was amazing, the portions are way too big for the price but I guess that's good for the customer. I had bonehead strips with garlic mayo, added blue cheese dip, nashuille fries and white slaw, my partner had dragon wings, buffalo burger and garlic parmesan tats. I didn't finish my food because the portions were gigantic 🤭 Food was really fresh, we also didn't wait too long for it. Overall, it was a really good experience, definitely will return

Honestly the best fried chicken me and my partner have ever had. He’s still talking about it 3 days later. The place has a real alternative vibe without being pretentious. Most of the staff were very friendly and cheerful. The value for money is fantastic. Popped in before a gig at o2 Institute and will defo be back when I’m in Birmingham again!

I love bonehead. I think it is the best place for chicken burgers in town. They use chicken thighs, making the burger extra juicy. My favourite is a dragon burger or a plain. They do really good beer as well and the staff are lovely.

The only thing I liked was the potatoes The burger was not a good experience at all, and some of the pieces were pink in color. I don’t know if this is unevenness? The order came to me without ketchup or any sauce The price is very high for the demand

I loved their crispy waffle fries and the bonehead chicken breast and wing! Will visit again to try the buffalo chicken wings. Service was impeccable, waited less than expected (you leave your number and they let you know with a sms when the table is ready)

Great food and service but the place its kinda small.

Great chicken, good variety and reasonable price. Staff friendly and efficient, was able to get a walk in table on a Saturday, however a lot of people were getting turned down.

just had a great interaction with a staff member over the phone. Called regarding an Uber order and the lady was extremely kind and helpful (despite being clearly busy from the background noise). Not sure of her name but she took our call at ~6.40pm today’s date!

I ordered a take way online, this was easy to do and straight forward. I went to the restaurant to pick up my order and the staff were friendly and smiling and the atmosphere of the patrons eating and waiting had a great vibe. The food was amazing, crispy chicken tenders and the burger was huge but so very tasty. The waffle fries, well they were very tasty too! 😋😋 Will definitely go for a sit down meal, next time I am in Birmingham!

This is quite a cool restaurant with friendly staff after waiting 45mins for a table at another bar we received a message to say our table was ready which was great there was only one toilet that's unisex so a few times we were queuing after a bit of a wait we were given our food I recommend their burgers because they were amazing, the leg and thigh I also ate was abit greasy but was still a good dish once he had our bill we had a 10percent service charge which cost the 3 of us 8 pound if I would come back it would be for just a burger or to drink at the bar area

Well what can I say this is simply the best place in town to get ALL THE chicken, an incredible selection of craft ales the rotation of beers is always good and one last shout out to the chicken. Succulent juicy and if you have hothead you're in for a treat, I want to give a big shout out to all the staff, always friendly and a great atmosphere

Visited following a recommendation. The restaurant has a cool vibe. The menu was interesting and the food we had was really tasty. The chicken burger was particularly nice. A nice independent restaurant in Birmingham which seems otherwise filled with chains.

Went there because of good reviews, but it was a disappointment for me. The wait for the meal was long for such a place, it seemed it was more important to finish take out orders. The taste of the chicken itself, well to be honest it was weird. The skin was hard. Did not like the fries either.

Mixed thoughts. I had a burger and it was nice. but others had chicken pieces and they were ok. for us it was kinda too crunchy and had some weird taste.

I go here often..it is normally veryyy veryyy good but this time..the bread felt stale..it wasnt fresh and soft how i know it to be. The filling in the burger seem to have gotten less and fries pirtions looking alil smaller than previous times..Even my company which was their first time was disappointed because i raved so much about this place. Please dont take shortcuts..keep up the standards that you guys are known for. It wont stop me coming back but i wont in a hurry.

Absolutely amazing, heard from a friend this place was good, I'm so glad I got to go. The best chicken I've eaten ever, the chicken was so fresh and tender, waffle fries were epic, and the beer was good. I really can't wait to go again, I haven't stopped think about it all. Wish there was a bonehead restaurant closer to where I live. Next time I'm up brum I'm deffo goin again. Just hope I can get a table 🙏

If you're in Birmingham City Center and love fried chicken then look no further, Bonehead is the real deal. They have a wide variety of burgers, wings and chicken strips, also a great fries menu. Their dips complement the food well. The food arrives within 10-15 minutes, the staff are all friendly and the restuarant has a great vibe. I'll definitely be returning in the future.

You will miss this small gem if you aren’t looking for it. It’s back street Birmingham and doesn’t shout at you to come in as you walk past. The windows have black blinds and the door is a bit battered. Don’t be put off. Inside it’s black. It’s dark. It’s a little bit heavy metal. It’s different and it’s superb. Staff are welcoming and the service is speedy. The menu is chicken, chicken or more chicken (plus a veggie option) Unsurprisingly they do chicken incredibly well. My 15 year old said ‘The best I’ve ever tasted’ and she knows fried chicken! Portions are generous, the chicken is light and perfectly cooked, house slaw is tasty & margaritas are not at all bad! It’s buzzy with a rapid turnover of tables, unobtrusive background music and chatting customers. I am officially the coolest mum having found this place so thank you Tripadvisor for the recommend. If you are looking for something different & sublime fried chicken in Birmingham Bonehead is your place. Cool and totally not corporate!

Wish I could have bonehead for dinner every night. The tots are the best addition to the burger. Great selection of drinks too. Waitress noticed member of table was struggling to read menu due to it being a little dark so she turned up lights. Very attentive.

Just Wow..awesome place to eat. Perfect aty, food was reasonably priced, excellent service and the food was awesome. Can't wait to go back. Perfect for Metal Heads and alike.

Been eating from here for years. They never miss! Best fried chicken I've ever had and really good beers too (though nowadays I just default to ordering a pint of Deya). Friendly service. Reasonable prices too!

Great service, food is made to order and not pre prepared so it comes out hot and crispy. Loved everything about this place. We will be back again soon.

Massively overrated and absolutely no customer service. We thought the food was appalling, I messaged them on social media and had no response which I think is terrible in this day and age. We had our food bought to us, no one came over to ask how it was. Chicken was unbelievably greasy and tasteless to the point couldn’t taste any seasoning over the oil. My partner said it was the worst chicken she’d tasted, far better places. Could have been resolved with some simple customer service but clearly can’t be bothered to respond to bad experiences had at the establishment.

Loved it! Food was great, staff were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was really fun and cosy. Will be back!

Recently had the fried chicken and burger from Bonehead and instantly become my favourite fried chicken food place. The place has different vibes. The dips, the salad and their waffle fries everything is 10/10.

If you have ever been to an restuarant establishment and had outstanding food, Bonehead beats that automatically by a country mile. The food is absolutely excellent, the chicken is succulent, tender and juicy and the fries burst out with mouthwatering flavour and crispiness. Compliments to the outstanding chef and fantastic waiting staff who make Bonehead such a pleasant and powerful experience. These are the best wings made on Earth and it's a God given privilege to eat at Bonehead.

Bonehead is always a win! The wings are sublime. Our server Marie was so helpful and genuinely kind. We tried the Nashville hot wings for the first time this trip and they definitely lacked heat but as usual, the lizard king was perfect. The chicken is always tender and the loaded waffle fries were a nice and crispy texture. This is our favourite spot in Birmingham.

Not a lot to say really, the best chicken and waffle fries you can ask for in Birmingham/the West Mids. Great selection of chicken burgers, wings, strips and fries, brilliant service, and all not to shabby on price either! And to those who moan about their table being given away when they arrive at 12 mins rather than within 10 mins of receiving their SMS saying table ready - you were told lol
