i come here once a month. top notch food as always, cooked fresh when ordered. the dips have great taste which contrasts with each other. the bread is soft and chewy but not too chewy. the service was prompt and excellent. quite attentive too. we were served by Maria (from Bulgaria i think) and we were served complimentary tea and baklava. half of my party was outside already when she ushered us back in because she had already prepared it for us! it just needed to be served.somehow i always order the mixed grill (everything is good, gotta eat it all) and it never disappoints. they willingly give you a takeaway box to bring home your leftovers. the toilets were clean.seating was cramped but it is a small shop so no issue here.will definitely visit again. and again. and again.

I am actually quite surprised this place is still open. As a patron of Cowley Road, this establishment is unfortunately on my drunken route home, and I have foolishly stumbled inside here all too often when I have had a few too many San Miguels. Well, never again.I will go onto the food later but firstly let me reveal some of the ways these wannabe gangsters try to extort money out of you on your night out:1. They will say you only gave them a tenner when you clearly gave them £20;2. They will charge you at the point of making your order and then (once you have waited 15 minutes for your 'meal') will demand payment again at the point of giving you your food; or3. Sometimes if you are really drunk they just try the classic method of overcharging you (and then claim "oh whoops my maths is wrong boss" if you call them out on it).And before you think this is a rant from an alcoholic who doesn't know what day of the week it is, let me tell you this has happened on a number of occasions and to a number of different people I know. It's organised robbery and they know it.This wannabe mafia outfit prey on drunken folk who assume they are in the wrong because they have had too much to drink. Go here in the day when you are sober and the cowards will probably not take their chances on ripping you off. However it's a different story at 3am on a Saturday morning. They will flash their yellow-teethed smile at each other as well, content in the knowledge they have successfully ripped off another mug who has drunk too much. And then we get to the food - greasy, gone-off and frankly disgusting. My flatmate got a lovely dose of diarrhoea from their pizza after she didn't heed my advice to avoid this cesspit. So yeah, go here for a lighter wallet and food poisoning. Go to Kebab Kid (or indeed any other Cowley Road chippie) for some reasonably tasty late-night food and a friendly service. I for one look forward to the day this place gets shut down.

Highly disappointed visit. We went here for our Staff Christmas party and I had a chicken thigh burger, which was tiny and not very tasty. Probably the worse burger I have ever had unfortunately. The tiny bit of slaw was pieces of shredded carrot and lettuce but no mayo. Will not return!

I’ve been coming to James St Tavern for about a year as part of a board game group (Oxford on Board - join us on Sundays!!!) and I can’t speak highly enough. It’s a great venue for games as the side area with the retractable roof is brilliant for all four seasons and really spacious and lots of tables. The pub itself is cosy and has a nice atmosphere - not fully “trad pub” but more of a modern pub vibe. The food has always been awesome (best avocado toast in Oxford for sure) and I appreciate that they give the group a discount too. The staff have always been really friendly, flexible, and accommodating, and the service has always been quick and hassle free. The price point is decent for Oxford as well. There’s a great range of drinks for those who do and do not drink alcohol - always such a bummer when as a non drinker I’m limited to coke. That’s definitely not the case here as they have coffees and teas lots of nice soft drinks - and a choice of non dairy milks as well. I like the diversity of things that happen at the pub as well - from open mic music to art shows and taking part in local community events like Cowley Road Carnival. 5/5 for me - keep it up James St!

The service was a complete joke - there were multiple inappropriate comments made by the manager Giovanni. He implied that we were drunk and that we had been drinking before. My friend asked why this comment was necessary and Giovanni said ‘I wasn’t talking to you’. It got to a point where he admitted he had done something wrong and tried to buy us off with free deserts. We felt this was even more inappropriate. We complained again to another worker. Giovanni came back again and offered us free desserts again after completely ruining the mood. The conversation ended with him walking away. Absolutely abysmal service.

We had a lovely meal and the staff were very pleasant and efficient. Our train was cancelled so we wanted to catch an earlier train and the staff served our meal in good time for us to catch the train. Food was excellent and hot, well done. I always like the pistachio souffle and the chocolate icecream with it was a treat.

¡Y luego otras 2 rondas! 😅 Lo recomendaría encarecidamente.
