We had a last minute issue with our reception meal venue and contacted John at the boat restaurant. He was amazing, helped us outdo much. He went out of his way to decorate for our wedding meal reception, he accommodated our food choices at short notice and we are so grateful to him , everyone loved the meal, food was delicious , compliments to the chef. John gave us an are of restaurant so we had some privacy and the view was just spectacular . Thank you so much to John and the team at the boat restaurant. Our wedding day was made perfect after you put so much effort into helping us so we highly recommend this place 😊

Really disappointing menu - basically French fries with burgers or fish and chips. Such a shame because the location is great. Also bar closed so only soft fizzy drinks. If you’re after something slightly healthy/vegetarian I’d give it a miss.

Have eaten here may times over the past decade. Brought a first time visitor to the Highlands to experience the view of the Loch, over a boozy coffee. The day was dull, as were the staff and the interior of the restaurant. The young lass did not know how to make a whisky coffee….and it was served cold. Think the whole place could do with a face lift…on all levels. Sure they’ll sort it eventually.

Ate here as a family and thought the food was pretty awful. I hate writing bad reviews, but I also hate being ripped off when food is poor quality. We tried the buffet so it might’ve been better in retrospect if we had ordered fresh food. The chicken wasn’t hot enough and as a result, was chewy and dry. The salads tasted as if they came in catering packs. Inexcusable for a main course costing nearly £15. It’s a real shame because the staff were really nice and were trying their best. Such a nice setting too.

I would always chose to eat local and have loved the boathouse for a long time - it’s situation is second to none… but to wait 45 minutes for a panini and some soup with two young children in tow Is nonsensical … I appreciate the difficulty In finding chefs and staff in this day and age, but surely some prior warning could have been given for the wait involved … I had to leave and abandoned my daughter and my dinner…

The young lady was very apologetic and offered to replace the two kebabs also a partial refund. The kebab’s we’re re served but one was still under cooked and pink .Such a shame as we have eaten here before. For £80 I would expect better quality. They knocked £25 off. I personally wouldn’t want to eat there again

Long wait to be served, got to the counter to place our order, sat down and were then told the fryers were not working so would not get chips or any of the items we had ordered. Because the staff are so young they were rude and snappy obviously stressed. Said we could have a jacket instead of chips, however when the food arrived only 3 of the meals were delivered one had been forgotten! And only on had a jacket spud. Was told that meal would be on the house however we were still charged for it on closer inspection. We will not return

Having walked around nearby Loch an Eilein - building up an appetite, the watching the fantastic Osprey at nearby Loch Insh (well known in the area) our party of five had no trouble and though almost 2.45pm a late lunch was not a problem, neither was seating the party.Three had the burger - which I'm assured was delicious, once had the baked potato and cheese and finally I not wanting chips had the Wild Boar Sausages with Creamy Mash in Gravy (with three Onion Rings). First time for Wild Boar for me and very nice - the Creamy Mash seemed a bit naughty to me - I pretended there was no butter or cream in there and mine was the healthy option :-)Surprised at some of the previous reviews but maybe there was a few "off-days". I speak only as I find and can only summarise the friendly staff will respond in kind. Pity we only visit annually. Wild Boar this year, next year? Venison maybe?

As a guest we were in a difficult situation to make comment at the time. However,to be told that a member of our party, held up in traffic from Newcastle, could not be served beyond 8pm, and then to find that the chef had vacated the building by 8.30... Leaving our group of 7 without a dessert on offer, having served us no more than a mediocre main course, was bad enough. But to sit by 10 pm having the chairs around us stacked, and the floor swept, did little to convince us of Highland hospitality. It was a case of : pay your money and #### off- appalling in this day and age. As a local I was ashamed. My advice.... Don't go.

Rather surprisingly we were directed here by tourist information staff in Aviemore who were at a loss for anywhere in town for lunch with a view. And in that regard, the restaurant & bar situated above the outdoor centre was first rate for extensive views across Loch Insh towards the surrounding hills. The service however, was not first rate unfortunately. We were seated at a sticky, indoor table & given menus by one young man who then promptly disappeared. Then we managed to make eye contact with another cheerless guy who asked if we were maybe ready to order? It was a shame that 2 out of 3 draught beers were unavailable, so had to go with a 3rd choice. We also ordered a burger & seafood pasta. Our drinks arrived within minutes and our meals straight afterwards making me wonder how this was achieved with a sizeable burger. Anyway, the food was very pleasant and we enjoyed the views whilst we ate it. Then, as a table became available on the terrace, we took our remaining drinks outside and for perhaps half an hour we watched in amazement as staff paid numerous visits to the surrounding tables and completely ignored the dirty glasses & plates on other tables on their way past. The people at the table next to us had to ask for it to be cleared! Overall, for just under £30.00, I didn't feel I'd received good value for money & wouldn't recommend it. Maybe we should have joined the many tourists in Aviemore sitting on rocks & benches eating sandwiches.

A group of friends decided to visit The Boathouse for a change instead of our usual Suie Hotel. A few of us hadn't eaten so we turned up at 6pm (all be it we hadn't made a booking) however the place was certainly not full. Ideally we didn't require a table just a burger and chips up at the bar. We were told they were "fully booked all night". So everyone proceeded to drink on an empty stomach, taking a bag of crisps as the only alternative. Again, the restaurant never appeared to be "full" throughout the night and usual practice at other restaurants would be "we need the table back for 7pm as we have another booking". It would have been suffice to be offered a few baskets of chips to keep us going.Another point that has to be made is there was no one stationed at the bar;all staff seemed to be "waiting on" the restaurant tables and so it was a case of waiting until someone returned to catch them for another drink. An American man visiting the area proceeded to sit at the bar for some time waiting to pay for his food and drink and when someone eventually made an appearance at the bar, the foreign staff member who struggled a little to understand requests, thought the customer wanted to order the food and drink so rang it through the till again. I had to shout over for the man and suggest he merely wanted to pay. Luckily for the staff members this gentleman still left a £2 tip. The reason I feel I need to leave a note to management is that you are giving the impression that you dont want customers and then being told at 9pm that last orders would be 11pm as the girl on the late shift that had been working since 7am was also in on the breakfast run the following day and didn't want to be there any later! We would think again about making the effort to bring some custom to a place that merely wasn't overly interested.

Had a great meal here for Valentines day. Chose the Valentines Menu which was 3 courses. The atmosphere was great and the place was very busy. The staff were great even when running around. Chose the beef wellington and it was the best i have ever tasted. The beef was cooked perfect. We stayed to watch band which were fabulous and did some great songs. Had a really great night and would love to try the apres menu next time!

You don't expect fine dining from a Watersports and Activity Centre, and in this case you'd be right. The Boathouse Restaurant has a fine view across little Loch Insh. It's not the prettiest of lochs, but on a sunny summer's day you could watch the canoeing and sailing dinghies and so on from your seat in the pine-log-clad (or perhaps even pine-log-constructed) eaterie, and the kids would love it. We chose to go on a cold and grey day at the end of December and the place was packed, warm and a little humid, whether from kitchen steam or from sweating customers in anoraks. The menu was about as basic as you can get - fish 'n chips, scampi 'n chips, burger 'n chips - with some daily specials of chicken on potato and black pudding, or duck on potato and haggis, or maybe it was the other way around. All perfectly edible, but painfully slow to arrive, even though the place was by then almost empty: one of our party of six had to wait a good six minutes after rest of us finally got our food. The two staff we saw appeared stressed, which might have accounted for some discrepancies between the drinks we ordered and the drinks that arrived. £130 for six for two courses each and including three or four pints of beer and then coffees all round, so it really wasn't expensive. But in truth it was more a waiter-service cafeteria than a restaurant and doubtless just the job if you have the family in tow after a morning's waterborne delights. We had thought originally of going there for dinner, but the website showed a dinner menu of fish 'n chips, scampi 'n chips, and burgers 'n chips, so instead we went to the Co-op and cooked an even more daring menu back home.

I was at the launch of the new menu and can highly recommend it. Good choice and a lot of locally sourced food, great wine menu too. This is definitely a place to visit and enjoy. Prices are good too.

It pains me to leave a 1 star review for any establishment as, normally, some redeeming features can be found but our experience here was absolutely diabolical. We arrived at 11.30am to a sign on the door that said "Open". We were hoping to order a light lunch. The place was empty and we were initially ignored by the waitress behind the counter despite her knowing full well we were standing on the other side of it. She only acknowledged us when I said "Excuse Me" so not a great start. We were told lunch didn't start till noon though we could have tea or coffee till then. We agreed to wait and asked for a tea and a latte meantime. The first table we went to had food debris all over the seats so we moved to another which had salt spilt across the table. Presumeably, the place hadn't been cleaned since the night before. My order - when it was eventually plonked down in front of me - turned out to be a teabag floating in a builders mug with no spoon to fish it out with and nowhere to place the used teabag ( other than discarding it on the already grubby table ). Partner's latte was diabolical and seemed to be just an ordinary coffee with a greasy film on top.Anyway, by 12.15 no menus had been offered ( perhaps a blessing in disguise if the drinks were anything to go by ). Plenty of staff on duty - by now 2 waitresses and several kitchen staff but no one seemed remotely interested in providing service ( plenty of chatting between themselves though ). We paid and walked out after 45 minutes. This was without a doubt, the worst experience we've ever had in any establishment. What a shame as it's in a fabulous location but , of course, that's down to Mother Nature so I can't give even them a point for that

We have been visiting this wee village in Scotland for 25 years and spend lots of time at Loch Insh. Over the years the menu has vastly varied, in cost and quality but we were really impressed with the menu this year. A good variety and prices was much more reasonable. We stopped going for a few years as they menu just outpriced itself entirely! Being one of the only restaurants in the village, this limited our choices somewhat!!The setting is glorious; loch insh is such a special place. Staff are friendly and helpful and the food arrived hot and was delicious. Snack and main menus were all delicious. Wine menu not the greatest but feel the menu now suits the relaxed mood and environment.

Just recently this location has requested reservations for lunch and evening meals. This is a relatively new process given it was a turn up, sit down and order restaurant before. There is also a previously unseen level of organization which is a great credit to the current team (not that it was poor before I might add). We've visited on numerous occasions and had a variety of meals in the past but this time our scampi and chips were the best they've been. As ever the views across the loch are superb and the overall atmosphere is great. The Boathouse is highly recommended whether simply for a drink in the bar or a family, couples, singles sit down meal - just remember to book ;-)

Had an evening meal here recently whilst camping at Alvie Estate Campsite. We sat on the balcony as we had our dog with us and have to say the view was possibly one of the best views I've ever had whilst eating! Along with a very lovely waitress and a fab reasonably priced meal, what more could you ask for? Sat on the shore of the loch to watch the sunset after. Perfect evening. Would love to return

The Fish and Chip Shop is in our experience is without a doubt the BEST IN CAITHNESS AND SUTHERLAND! The fish was white and flakes. fried in beautiful crispy batter and the chips were perfect. We have experienced other Chip Shops in Wick,Thurso and Helmsdale, plus Mobile Chip Vans in Lybsterand Dunbeath and this has been the best so far too. We travelled around 30 miles to eat here and would do so again. THANK YOU.

After poor experiences in Oban and Fort William this place restored our faith in a Scottish breakfast and hospitality. Great service, even better breakfast made with quality ingredients.
