Would not recommend visiting during nice weather, they do not prioritise bookings over walk ins. We waited over an hour and a half for our food to be served and it only arrived after we had complained about the wait. Why they take walk ins for food when they are clearly under pressure already I do not know. It could have been ok had we been made aware of the wait on arrival but it was only after we had ordered that we realised we could be in for a long wait from speaking to other customers around us. We hoped for a lovely afternoon in the sun but were left very disappointed, we will not be visiting again.

Awful, table booked, but shouldn't have bothered. An hour's wait for a very average roast lamb dinner. Dirty toilets, dirty table. Feel sorry for the young hard working staff who were having to placate people. And to top it all bisto gravy. Spoiled for choice in Shrewsbury, fantastic setting, what a let down.

My recent visit to boat house presented a somewhat contradictory experience. On the positive side, the establishment boasts a very pleasant atmosphere, enhanced by a well-curated musical selection. This undoubtedly makes it an appealing venue for those seeking a relaxed environment for a few drinks, and I would recommend it for a casual gathering over beers. However, the service I encountered during my visit fell significantly short of expectations. A considerable wait of 45 minutes was experienced, and regrettably, there were subsequent delays in the arrival of both my starter and main courses. Adding to this, the order received contained errors. Furthermore, the culinary aspect was disappointing. The food was served lukewarm and unfortunately did not retain its heat for an adequate duration, resulting in the latter part of my meal being noticeably cold. In conclusion, while boat house offers a commendable ambiance and a suitable setting for drinks, the issues encountered with the service and the temperature of the food detract significantly from the overall dining experience. Addressing these areas would be crucial in ensuring a more consistently positive experience for future patrons.

I visited the Boathouse with 4 friends on a Friday night. Our server made us feel like an inconvenience, slamming our drinks down and snatching menus from us once we had ordered. Everyone has bad moods or bad days, but if you're working in the service industry then hiding it from your guests is a vital skill. Those of us who had fries with our meals found them almost unbearably salty, and the steak on mine was very dry and tasteless. The fries alone cost me £10!

More the rude house than the boat house. The lady bartender was appallingy rude when we asked about ordering food. A fellow customer looked on in horror at the way we were spoken to. We regard ourselves as polite people so this was just very unpleasant. We left the rude house, I mean the boat house and grabbed fish and chips , sat by the river and had a lovely picnic. Note to staff, try using words like please, thank you, etc. Rolling of eyes and talking at customers...or even other human beings is not a good look. Check other reviews, we are not the only people to complain about the rude house...I mean the boat house

Terrible Food service - badly organised. We booked an outside table for the evening of a nice sunny day. Seating for diners was under a large permanent umbrella- the setting is lovely although the seating is hard and there are hardly any cushions available we’d checked the weather forecast- dropping to 6 degrees in the evening so had worn jackets but sitting waiting for our food it felt cold. Someone came and lit a gas heater, which wasn’t near us but we were told ours would be done we asked 3 more times - nothing. By now we had been waiting over an hour for our food- people who’d arrived way after us had been served. Our starters of soup and garlic bread still hadn’t arrived- this might’ve warmed us! How long does it take to put soup in a bowl? It’s not got to be cooked- it’s already made! The young waitresses were working hard and were backwards and forwards to the kitchen- we felt sorry for them as they were taking orders but no food appeared. I went to a guy who seemed to be in charge- I was told they only had x1 gas bottle!!! I laughed- on the first nice day of the year? When they’d taken booking for outside dining? Why no heating????🤷🏻‍♀️ There was a box with very thin blankets- they were damp. (Women in dresses were freezing- the damp blankets made it worse. What are the management doing? Can’t they address some basic housekeeping? When serving food outside- get yourselves organised.) My friends husband asked again about our food- we’d been patient up to this point- it’s now 8.15pm and are on another round of drinks. Finally, after an hour and 20minutes the soup arrived- it was warm…. Definitely not hot- no steam coming off it- I sent mine back. The bar manager had magicked another gas bottle and spent 15mins trying to get the heater going- he was on the 2nd heater when we left (the 1st was broken) should they be finding these things out while they have a terrace full of hungry, cold guests??? Again- zero organisation. We were cold, & hungry- we left- leaving our expensive round of drinks on the table. We went to a nearby Asian restaurant and were seated, & bought snacks immediately. It’s going to be a long difficult summer at The Boathouse if they don’t get their act together! The poor waiting staff - all young girls were polite and helpful but are being let down by the managers (I saw one in tears- this is not a good look for such a busy establishment!)

Beer good, location fabulous but one hour to get food, not good. All tables around us being served shortly after being seated. Three attempts to ask where our food was and the servers never came back and then possibly deputy manager ( only think this as he was wearing a shirt rather than a polo shirt), young man came and said there had been an issue we can still serve your food, I said all it takes is someone to tell the truth or be honest, he said the ticketing machine was skipping orders. I said you’ve had nearly £90 off me, yes I want my food but was it worth the wait?, to be honest no. We didn’t order loads of food, just baps, with a side salad and slaw and 3 sides of fries with different toppings so very disappointed. My fries were swimming in grease and we played hunt the chicken and bacon on my partners food.

I met with friends for supper. It took the waitress 40 mins to offer us a drink which did eventually arrive. One of our group was vegan and asked if she could have the flaffel as there was nothing on the main menu she could have. She was told by the waitress that this could not be possible. We then asked if she could have a salad which again we were told no! The waitress was not remotely interested in trying to help and had a real attitude almost as if she didn't want to be there. My friend had to have a bowl of soup as that was all that was available to her. We had to ask for the music to be turned down as the speaker was over our table and the noise from staff making coffee made us jump each time as they kept banging the metal parts of the machine. We were not approached to see if the food was ok and to top it off they put £10 on the bill as a service charge. We asked for this to be removed which they did. The food when it did arrive was luke warm and definitely not worth the money especially when you have several great pubs in close proximity to the Boathouse that serve excellent food. I love this place for drinks but will not be back for food anytime soon.

Food was tasty, but service wasn't great. Drinks took 10/15 minutes to arrive (one bottle of wine) and waiter held glass with a claw grip so his hand was touching all along rim of the glass. We have dined here 2-3 times per year when visiting family. This time however was not a good experience. I had booked earlier in the week. The booking process was easy over the phone and I was asked how many people, what time, dogs and do we have any dietary needs? However on arrival it was as if our booking wasn’t on the system. Diners in our seats and only one table out of the two tables booked. Food ordered and when it came out there was a few issues. One of the chicken pies was Black. I assume to crisp the pastry under the grill but it was inedible. Also at dessert the cheesecake was smaller than what a child’s portion would be and for £8. Service was particularly poor. I counted at least 6 servers and 5 bar staff. We had to go to the bar to ask them to take our orders at the table. We seemed invisible. Granted if the staff were busy and rushing back and forth to the kitchen but they were all giggling and joking around with each other like they were just here to hang out rather than working and serving. At least look busy even if you’re not. The bill came and we had been given a discount but no explanation why plus they added a service charge on top even though service was non existent. Shame really as we come here often to meet family. Perhaps we will dine elsewhere in future. Has the business changed hands? I think some customer service training, and quality control when food leaves the kitchen is needed before the Christmas bookings come in to avoid disappointment. We are sad as we love this place. But sadly won’t be returning. Side note we have always come in the week. This was a Saturday and it was fairly quiet. Lots of empty tables inside and outside and lots and lots of staff.

Oh dear - we have been here a few times but never experienced anything like this !!! 1. We booked two tables and when we arrived there were other diners at the table we had booked and there was only 1 table. 2. Our food arrived and my pie I ordered was burnt black and I mean BLACK - how they could ever allow that to leave the kitchen !! 3. There was plenty of staff all hanging around chatting and totally unaware of customers. 4. In all our times eating out, we have never seen such a meagre serving of cheesecake and for £8 - daylight robbery ! On the plus side if there is one... A member of staff brought us the extra table we had booked before our food arrived. Presumably because of our complaints about the pie & cheesecake in particular (also ordered bread & butter pudding - it came cold??) we were given a 20% discount with no explanation or apology but then they took back 5% service charge - WHAT SERVICE. Sadly we won't be visiting again 😪 it was a birthday treat from our son & partner so, so disappointed !!

So disappointed, we have eaten here quite a few times in the past as it’s a half way point between us and my in laws. On this occasion we were treating my mother in law to lunch for her birthday. We booked a table for four and a dog, we have always had a table just inside the door to the left of the bar, next to the kitchen and this is what we believe we had booked, two small round tables pushed together. We had been asked if we had any dietary needs when booking and we had said one of the party was gluten free We arrived, granted slightly early by 10 mins, the table we thought we had booked had people on it so we went to the bar to get a drink. There were lots of staff milling about and chatting to each other but no one seemed interested to serve us. Eventually we were able to order drinks and a member of staff checked the bookings on the computer, moved the people from the table and cleaned and laid it up for us. There was only one very small table for four of us but we made do. They also put menus on the table but there was no indication of gluten free dishes on the menu but it did say to ask your server for an allergy menu. Without being able to attract the attention of what seemed like about 10 staff standing about chatting, I went up to the bar and asked. The girl I asked said she didn’t know, yet she seemed to be a server. She asked another member of staff who clarified my allergy and said he would get me an allergy menu. I stood waiting at the bar for over 5 minutes. Many staff again stood around chatting but no one spoke to me until one man finally explained that their printer was playing up, and the menu needed to be printed. Why, if they had us booked in as needing allergy menu was it not ready and waiting. After a further few minutes the same man said why don’t you go back to the table, and we will bring it over, which I did. The same man also bought us a second table so we had more room which was much appreciated along with the allergy menu when it had been printed. We ordered and the food arrived. There was a couple of issues with other peoples food, a burnt (completely black) pie and a piece of cheese cake costing £8 but no bigger than the palm of your hand. The waiting staff handled this poorly in my opinion, no apology, follow up or mention of how they could better our experience. After we raised these issues we became almost invisible to the staff, there were so many of them just stood chatting and joking and in and out of the kitchen doing the same. They cleared plates before one of us had finished eating, we had to ask for dessert menus, ask for them to come back and take our order, ask for the bill and ask for them to come back so we could pay. The gluten free food was delicious, but I did over hear some interesting discussions from the kitchen regarding cross contamination which concerned me. Also all food and servers clothing is brushed by the plastic strips hanging down over the kitchen door as it leaves the kitchen not great. When we got our bill there was a deduction of a random amount listed as discount but no one explained this to us. We had to work out for ourselves with a calculator back at home that they had deducted 20% from our total bill. At this point we also realised they’d added a 10% service charge which we felt was not at all deserved. Again this wasn’t explained to us. All of the staff need training in customer service, allergies and professional standards. We will not be returning. It seems there have been many poor reviews recently and that something must have changed between our last visit and now. They do seem to get away with poor food and service as they are in a great location.

After having a lovely boat trip passing the boathouse. We booked a meal after being highly recommended by the boat skipper. When entering the restaurant the chief was sitting on his laptop his finger nails were filthy long and unkept, couldn't help notice as left waiting to be directed to our booked table. Other customers were buying drinks at the bar. We asked a waitress if we ordered food at the bar. She replied no its table service. We waited 10 minutes to order drinks and our choice of roast chicken dinner. Our drinks arrived , we had finished our drinks by the time our meals arrived. The roast chicken was very average with luke warm vegetables and tiny amount of drizzled gravy. We asked for extra gravy which arrived served by a waitress who appeared to be tired and attitude of could care a less. The whole atmosphere was very disappointing with a average meal which reflected badly on the price. Its a beautiful setting but unfortunately ran by younger staff who obviously didn't want to work. Apart from a young man who was very polite and helpful. Wouldn't recommend and a very disappointing end to our lovely day in Shrewsbury.

Staff very attentive and very smiley and friendly, all young and attentive. Had Sunday lunch there, not at all bad, all made and cooked on the premises, roast beef was a bit tough...but chicken and pork was fine. I think that to be honest it's a bit pricey for what it is.. £8 starter, £18 to £20 main and £8 dessert..was not informed before we paid the bill that service charge is added automatically..if you noticed it on the bill they will remove it..on top of the already slightly pricey food 12.5% service charge is a bit of a piss take. Enjoyable, pleasant, friendly, pricey for what it is....oh dog friendly as well.

I visited the Boathouse for a drink; I loved the place so much I came back the following day before returning home to Derbyshire. The waiter was so friendly & professional and it's a gorgeous spot to watch the world go by, especially when the weather was so good. Thoroughly recommend.

Such a lovely location but horribly disappointing experience. Not enough staff and those recruited way too young. Ordered the crispy fried beef and the clueless waitress came to the table and asked who’d ordered the ceaser salad! She looked half asleep and no cutlery provided. Meal was not seasoned and beef dry. Boyfriend’s meal wasn’t good either. Will not return. Sort it out. You are coasting on a fabulous location.

Late afternoon visit. Great location by the river. A shame the service is dreadful and the food inedible. Bar on the terrace outside had insufficient staff serving. Queues long. Plenty of staff milling around or chatting amongst themselves with little or no interested in doing their jobs. When food arrived. Partner and my food arrived at different times and no cutlery. Had to ask twice for cutlery with food going cold. Partners dish of crispy beef salad inedible. Complained! Partner had something else. Not much better. Refund for some of it. Won't be going back. They are getting away with poor service and food because of the nice location. A great shame as it could be so much better.

Had the best time with the family at the boathouse, food was lovely and had Kira as our server, who was more than welcoming. Food came quick and all plates were cleared! 5 stars all round except for atmosphere unfortunately. As much as I love the jazz playlist, we were not too big of fans of the Ibiza chill.

Fast service, friendly staff, and delicious food! My husband and I both got steak and chips - his medium rare and mine medium - which were cooked to perfection. Our waitress was a joy to interact with and the atmosphere was second-to-none. will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends!

We had slow service at the start to seat us we were all standing for about 10mins just to get seated then when we ordered drinks took about 15mins when the lady came over to order our food we all ordered steaks the lady left then came back to ask how we all wanted our steaks cooked! We then waited an hour and 40mins to receive our food and when we did they brought 2 plates and and didn’t even give the rest of our food till 6mins later when we all received our steak they were all stone cold the chips were over cooked so was the steaks they were not moist and completely dry they were not cooked to our preferences we then had the manager over to re-fire our food which took another 30mins and the steaks came out burnt! The chef clearly doesn’t know how to cook and I’m surprised the service even brought it out the door! The manager took £35 off the bill but at the end of it we would have rather spent £35 at mc Donald’s! It was clear we weren’t the only customers getting served slow! And overcooked food!

The restaurant was lovely and outdoor area was vibrant, however wasn’t too impressed with service and, the time it took to serve our meals and not to mention two of our dishes came out cold (chicken skewers). I definitely think the staff members do not have clue on services and, check on customer happy with their food. They were just standing around and talking to one another.

I was staying in the hotel and decided to eat at the Oak Room at least one night during my stay. Not disappointed! Although this hotel and restaurant (and the attached spa for that matter) are *not* for someone who's protective over their wallet (at least by my council estate kid standards lol!), the atmosphere is absolutely amazing. The staff were kind and amazingly helpful. They couldve been slightly more attentive, but I was the only solo customer in a restaurant packed with full tables on a Saturday night, so I don't fault them for this. I had the mackerel starter, which was lovely, plated very neatly and was about the best fish I've ever had. Then the sirloin steak. My preference is rare. Everything was excellently cooked and presented. The steak was perfect, juicy and succulent, some of the best I've ever had. The food also all came out very orderly, I wasn't waiting very long at all, even considering that I imagine this is one of the restaurants busier times. I finished with a latte, caramelised biscuit cheesecake and whipped chocolate ganache (I have quite the sweet tooth). Once again, very orderly, wasn't waiting long at all. Beautifully presented and tasted excellent. Really no complaints about quality. I will say, for coeliac and gluten free folks; I myself am not one of you, but the fellow next to me was, and it seemed he was having some trouble finding things that were gluten free on the menu, especially the dessert menu. Just keep this in mind. Bear in mind for yourselves that this is very much fine dining. While the portions are nothing to scoff at, they're obviously not huge, and it's a big price tag to pay. Having said that, looking to impress a date or host a special occasion around this area? I'd suggest this place for sure. The staff were incredibly capable for a busy Saturday night, and the atmosphere was very calm and sophisticated. Very good for what it is! For complete transparency's sake, I paid £83.70-- £10 gratuity I added myself, and £12 for drinks, so without that it would be £61.70. Pricy, but not all too bad for the fine dining experience they're offering. It's also worth mentioning some of the things I ordered were the pricier options of their menu!

We come here at least once a week for our breakfast, as usual this visit was extremely pleasant, the food and drinks came quickly and was presented to us with a friendly smile from the staff. The Eggs Benedict was gorgeous, lovely Ham and lots of it, Two runny poached eggs, cooked to perfection and lovely Hollandaise Sauce.. well done to all the staff both front and rear of house. We’ll be back!
