Ordered dinner at the cafe garden, one glass of wine, one bottle of beer, and 2 lasagna dinners. We waited over half an hour and eventually had to go and ask as to where our order was, guess what they forgot!.... It then appeared with one utensil, a fork! I had to ask for knives and napkins. The mince of of dubious quality. We were told the salad was coming, so just started a little of the lasagna as we were hungry, to find it luke warm 😡 the portion size was very meager and when the salad arrived, we were both both presented with a plate of lettuce leaves, just theown on a plate with what seemed like a splash of vinegar! We paid £48 for what could only be described as a bad '70s school dinner! Very disappointed given the beautiful, tranquil location. We expected vastly better quality and portion size for our money. We felt like we were robbeda We would most certainly not recommend this place for food.

The first time we went, we had the taster menu and it so good we booked to come back a couple of days later. The second time we ordered from the menu and to say it was disappointing was an understatement. I had the Highland beef with gravy, potatoes and vegetables and some salad leaves. It came to the table, the plate was not freezing but everything was tepid. That might have been to stop the salad leaves from wilting. I mean who has salad leaves with a meal like this. I gulped it down, but I am not a fan of cold gravy. There was a couple at the next table and the lady also had Highland beef. When she went to the toilet, her husband asked if my meal was ok as his wife wasn't happy with hers. Too chewy. Unfortunately our experience went from one end of the scale to the other. The first visit was just under £300 for 2 of us, worth every penny, and the second time around £150. £150 is too expensive for a poor dining experience, so I don't think we will be going back.

Had the taster menu and it was excellent. It was pricey but the food was s good that we booked to go back 2 days later. On arrival we were shown to a lounge area and shown the drinks menu. Disappointing choice and ended up having soda water and lime. Dining area is ok but does not give a welcoming feeling.

The Boath House impressed the moment we walked in. We were greeted warmly by Fiona, the manageress. The menu was thoughtful. The food was very well prepared, delicious, and innovative. Each dish burst into flavours. The serving team was attentive and discreet in equal measures. We chose from the 3 course menu as the tasting menu was sold out. We got to meet the head chef and his team before we left. I can thoroughly recommend the restaurant at Boath House to you.

We had eaten here before under previous ownership and were keen to return when the restaurant recently reopened, especially as we’d heard positive reviews from people who had been. Those reviews had all been based on the A La carte menu whereas we had opted for the tasting “experience” that was offered. We generally opt for the taster menu whenever it is offered and have eaten at many Michelin starred/high end establishments. Credit where it is due, the Amuse Bouche was delicious and set our expectations for a taste delight to come. That wasn’t quite what we experienced as the next course in our “taster” consisted of some garden foraged greens that were basically acrid and inedible. I’m sorry, there is nothing positive to say about that course. Meanwhile the first wine from our flight was apparently the wine for the amuse bouche, the inedible “forage” as well as the next course which was a slice of bread and butter! I do admit that the homemade bread and the whipped butter was indeed very nice but it is not something that I can accept as a course in a taster menu. Next came a scallop dish which was very tasty and was served with a white wine. The main course was a piece of pork which again was cooked beautifully but was served on cold plates so the dish wasn’t as good as it could have been as a result. During this time the service had gone a bit awry as there was no cutlery ready for the main course which added a few more minutes for the already cooling food to cool some more. The pre-dessert was a total delight and the following dessert was also nice. The final Bon Bon thing was apparently not - I took one look at the 3 faces in our group who had tried it and decided to leave mine where it was. There were times when our wines weren’t delivered when they should have been and I counted 5 wines against our 7 “courses”. The bill came and we found that we’d been automatically charged 12.5% for service without any consultation. The service experience was very aligned to the food itself, some highs and some lows. We discussed our overall experience and concluded that it fell considerably short of other taster menus and wine flights that we had paid similar money for. We don’t mind paying when the overall experience is in line with what is charged . That was not the case here. We still hear positive comments and I have no doubt they are deserved but there is a long way to go on the “taste experience”. We also note that only positive feedback is acknowledged by Management. By all means ignore this feedback and stick your heads in the sand in the belief that you are competitive in the taster menu market but perhaps you should reconsider that particular offering and stick to what you are clearly better at.

Outstanding food and ambience in a lovely walled garden. We chose to eat outdoors (it was 19c) but under the tin roof (it did rain - it’s Scotland after all!). The inside of the restaurant was very busy but looked nice. It’s got quite a trendy boho vibe. The food was fresh, seasonal with plants from the garden and delicately seasoned. The only downside was how popular and how busy it was which meant the kitchen struggled to keep up. The waiting staff were great though when we told them we really wanted dessert before our booked taxi. We’ll be back again.

Service on day was confused and pre order didn’t work. Meat dishes were apparently good. Vegan dishes not so much. Tasted like tomato concentrate with too much salt in main and too much sugar in dessert, this for £40. I offered feedback and no one replied so for these reason I wouldn’t go again, it would seem they are not interested.

Stayed overnight in the drawing studio, felt more like a house guest than a customer, even our dog was made welcome. Carol singing in the afternoon was just beautiful. Accommodation and service were second to none. Ate at the garden restaurant at night, the new owners have changed the menu and there are new chefs in the kitchen. The menu was varied, well priced and the pizzas are back! What made this stay extra special was the attentive but unobtrusive staff. As locals we will definitely be supporting the new owners who appear to have really tried to get things right and create somewhere unique in the area once again. We could not recommend it highly enough.

I hadn't realised that the house and garden had changed ownership but it was obvious once we walked in. The food was tasty and the portion size suited us however, the presentation was lacking somewhat but that didn't bother us too much. Staff were pleasant as well. However, the issue we had was the lack of non-alcoholic drinks. I was driving and the other member of my party is not allowed to drink alcohol. Perhaps more than two non-alcoholic drinks should be offered particularly as one of the drinks is grapefruit which interferes with certain medications. The gardens were looking nice but it did seem to be missing some of the same care that was previously shown to it. Perhaps chalked up to a rather dull summer that we've had this year. All in all a nice visit but I won't be rushing back, perhaps the Kaleyard' set my expectations to high.

Visited today and there was a good choice of dishes in a rustic setting within the walled garden. My son in law and I chose to have ‘honeyed duck with figs, chestnuts and vegetables’. The dish was presented very well and looked very tasty. However we both struggled to cut up the large chunks of duck and when we did so it was very chewy. We are not the kind of people to make a fuss so we continued with it and the rest of the dish was tasty . In the end I gave up and left a whole breast of duck . When the waitress was clearing the table I suggested that she should try to cut the duck. Her answer was muffled because of her mask so I have no idea what she said. However there was no reduction on the bill nor any apology.I won’t be rushing back.I’ve eaten a number of times at Boath House itself and, although the food is of a high quality, the staff appear very haughty. There’s very little interaction or friendliness. The same appears true of the cafe too. I won’t be rushing back.

Firstly we went to this premises as a venue to meet up with friends in the Kale Yard, who we had not seen for months. It was very busy in a sunny lunch time, walled garden seeting.Orders were taken in the Restaurant Area inside which is also the location indoors of the only available toilets.Orders taken indoors were then delivered outdoors to bales with wood knives and forks and this according to the proprietor said qualified them for being a "take away" and did not require them to take names and contact details. It was only the fact they we were there with the friend that recommended the restaurant, we didn`t leave. The " ? " Take away" which is was nothing of the sort was very busy and in our opinion - confirmed in our discussions should have taken our details but made no effort. Our last cup of coffee - an order for 5 hot drinks were taken but could not be provided as they had run out of " till roll" - this is the first restaurant, Take away or any other hospitality venue I have even experienced not to be to provide teas and coffee`s because the till roll had run out?Lastly - the premises says its dog friendly, but expect a 100+ yards walk to the main road away from the premises to find a bin hidden behind fencing if you have a poo bag to dispose off. When asked the proprietor for a "dog poo bin" became very haughty, and said "our rubbish is biodegradeable and compostable" Not very dog friendly in my book.Overall, a niche restaurant that is a bit " full of itself" for what you get, best go Monday to Wednesday at the moment its a bit pricey.Sorry we wont be rushing back and as for not taking my details - better safe than sorry than trying to buck the system.

The salsa was tasty...mango, pomegranate and chilli. My friend had a lamb kofta with a hummus and a yoghurt dip and we struggled to tell the difference. Neither dip tasted of anything special, just goo with oil, again. We declined dessert as we were both keen to get out.. We had a slightly disappointing experience at the Boath House, where we went for a fine dining experience. The food did not disappoint but we went on a Sunday night, which appeared to be the front of the house staff's night off. The staff were young and very nice but not well trained. There was no one to advise on the extensive wine list, we were not checked on during our meal, and actually had to go find the staff to request our bill. At a restaurant with a stellar reputation and a steep price this is really inexcusable. We might still recommend (the food was splendid)-- but with a caveat that you do not want to go on an "off" night.

We decided to try here after reading, ironically, that the Michelin Star had been lost, meaning the menu would be more accessible and not fixed any longer. The food here is very good, one of the best restaurants in the area without a doubt. Even simple little things like the bread were excellent and noticeable. The dishes, to me anyway, were perfectly cooked, with plenty of flavour and arrived at our table in good time. What does let this restaurant down a little is the other factors. The drive is nice but not lit and you cannot park directly in front of the house meaning you'll be walking to the house in the dark, possible rain and mud! The waitresses were very friendly and approachable but perhaps not the most professional. No offer to take coats, questions about food and drink were hit and miss, some things she didn't know but did find out and then there is the question of ambience. There was some music in the dining room for while but was stop start, the reception room was silent as we were the only ones in, then you are conscious of talking too loudly. Maybe a wee bit of streaming service in here would not go amiss. Overall, still deserves the 5 stars, especially in this area where truly good food can be hard to come by. The main thing is the food is good and the rest is easy to fix.

We decided to stay here to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We heard about it in an article that recommended it for its food, comparing it to the three chimneys which we thought was superb. The staff were very welcoming on arrival and the house and grounds were just stunning! We loved wandering about and finding lots of beautiful spots to explore. The room was beautiful, and had a lovely little outside orangery where there was a seating area and the option to have breakfast there if we would rather. The wetroom was fab with lovely toiletries to use! The bed was very comfy and cosy! Couldn’t recommend enough! The dinner was very tasty, and the breakfast was delicious too!

On arrival at the hotel we were met by a grate welcome and a nice open fire on in the lobby, we were shown to our lovely room with a cast iron bath, wet room, king size bed, orangery with access directly into the gardens. The room was kitted out with a safe, ironing board, toiletries, water, coffee, fresh milk, shortbread, TV, phone, and music docking station. The hotel also offers days out like fishing and shooting. The food at the hotel is very nice, not the best I have had in the area but still very well cooked and presented. £45 for a 3 course dinner with top class 5 star service, home made bread and canapés beforehand, definitely money well spend. The hotel isn’t cheap to stay in and the drinks and extras are not cheap but you get what you pay for. They only have 9 rooms so it’s very quiet and relaxing and a grate getaway hotel. All in all this is a lovely hotel with good food, nice grounds and grate service. We will definitely be returning again, highly recommend hotel for a couple looking for a quiet getaway.

I requested a visit to Boath House for my birthday whilst I was in the area. I've no idea if the establishment still retains a Michelin star, but I did get the good food that I was expecting. For such a large, beautiful estate I didn't feel that the environment was too fussy which was appreciated because I personally arrived in jeans and trainers after a long day of Scottish exploration. The house is a little hard to find, especially in the dark so be warned. I didn't much care for the initial drawing room holding pen. As lovely as the room is, I was tired, it was late and there weren't enough people left in the restaurant to justify not seeing us promptly to our table. It seems a conscious way to get the drinks tab flowing, so fair enough. Secondly, the wines list is overpriced and I found it odd that there was no sommelier to talk me through vintages I was curious about. Everything else though I found very reasonable. The tasting menu is generously portioned, accessible and affordable. The food did come very promptly, with plenty of time politely given between courses to savour and carry on conversation. My partner enthused about the apple pasty dessert but the foie gras stole the show for me personally. I also very much appreciated the small birthday gesture of decorative petit fours after such a long journey to visit. I'll certainly come again.

We stayed for one night at Boath House with friends and we were really looking forward to it. On arrival the house is impressive and the grounds are lovely. The welcome was ok. Not much was said. We booked superior rooms but all the rooms looked lovely. Our room was huge, decorated in keeping with the house and was very comfortable with a lovely view. There were a lot of ‘rules’ in the room such as not being allowed to bring and drink a bottle of wine without paying corkage, toiletries can be purchased and only for use in room (as these were regular sized bottles of Molten Brown I assumed people would know this), if any smoking in room then a £200 charge would be incurred. Now I have no issue with these requests but it would be a whole lot nicer if guests could be told this while checking in rather than in writing (and not in a particularly nice manner) in the room. It just seemed cold and was off putting. The hospitality tray was very nice with a selection of posh teabags. It’s always nice to have hot chocolate included. The bathroom was fabulous with the only issue being a wobbly toilet seat. A small gripe but for the price I do not expect to have even the smallest of issues. Dinner was nice but I’ve had better. The dining room was attractive and relaxed. The staff were pleasant but appeared inexperienced and were not really able to answer queries about the menu or house. My side plate was whipped away while I was still eating my bread. It was really quite rushed and even after asking for a break before dessert it still was brought swiftly to our table. It felt as if the staff just wanted to get home. We finished off our wine in the lounge. Once fellow diners had paid for their meals we did not see a member of staff again so we never got to have a post meal drink. Boath House say that food and drink is how they make their living so I suggest the staff are a bit more attentive as they missed out on further income from us. Still it was nice to sit in the lounge and have a chat. We went for a stroll round the gardens prior to breakfast. The garden is gorgeous. The little cafe in the grounds looks delightful although we didn’t visit when open. Breakfast was good. We were checked out by the staff who were serving at breakfast.

Visited with family for dinner. Lovely introduction, sitting in the lounge, but food was just ok and very ordinary, the opposite of what I was led to believe. The turning point however was my venison main course had significantly less venison on my plate than my two young daughters’. When I pointed this out, the waiters intimated that I was embarrassed, which I was not. The waiter returned, with a most brazen attitude, denying any difference in portion size, despite the difference clearly sitting before our eyes. This really spoilt the meal as they clearly treated me with disdain and mistrust and were not happy at the end of the meal when I commented that I had hoped that the issue would have been resolved more amicably. £45 a head is lot for a meal - children at £45 a head too - when you are not happy with portion uniformity...this wouldn’t be tolerated in London, or in England.

As a hotelier myself it is great to find local eateries which my guests will enjoy so manage to eat my way through most of them. Not only will I be sending all my guests here I may have to move in. The whole experience was just sensational. It was like being in heaven for an afternoon. The owner very kindly came and spoke with us with absolute charm. It actually made me want to run home and re-design my house. Go there you will LOVE IT!!! Oh and the food is to die for there is a small menu but the choice is made for you with absolute care and attention for the seasons, the weather and the people who are lucky enough to find it.

There was nothing wrong with the food and at £45 per head was reasonable value. However based on the restaurant’s previous Michelin Star and Two Rosettes expected more. Menu was uninspiring with limited choice. Only fish dish for main course was salmon that I could have cooked at home. My venison was very well cooked but rest of the dish was average. Deserts were very good and the highlight. Service was fine. Therefore don’t want to say there was anything poor about the food just didn’t have any wow factor like we have had in other restaurants on our trip.

A brilliant place just outside Nairn, a bit in the countryside. But a taxi took us there in 10-15 minutes. A great place that showed class already when we arrived. Brilliant food, served by skilled waiters. A good selection of wines. Here we had this gastronomic highlight of this golfing trip. Recommended.

I’ve tried and enjoyed lunch, taster menu, dinner and afternoon tea in the “Big House” and decided to try lunch at the recently- opened cafe within the walled garden. Expecting cafe-type food, I was pleasantly surprised to find a quality menu of just 3 choices of main (still difficult to choose). The oven roasted venison shank was truly the best venison dish I’ve had. The flavour was immense. Good sized portions for a lunch time, allowing for starter, main and pud or cake, and coffee. Very talented Italian chef. Will definitely be back to try their mid-week pasta and pizza nights. Venue is very tastefully decorated and furnished in a rustic, yet classy, minimalist design. Top marks again, to the excellent hosts!

This was the absolutely cutest place. The only drawback is that it wasn’t within walking distance of Nairn because of the very busy road. The breakfast here was incredible. There was literally nothing bad about this place as long as you’re not walking dependent.

OK so they lost their Michelin star and claim they don't want it back, but how on earth have they still got their 4 AA rosettes (rating them equal to some of the finest restaurants in the land)?!?! Utterly ludicrous, unfair, unjustified and badly misleading to people like us who use this guide as a reliable indicator of quality. Don't, or you, like us, will be very sorely disappointed.

I received a voucher back in February for my birthday for afternoon tea for two. We waited until the weather improved as we wanted to view gardens. Stunning house and gardens. Very attentive and friendly waitress. Lovely, fresh, tasty sandwiches and of course the cakes were fabulous and scones with clotted cream and homemade jam to finish it all off. Gardens gorgeous. Highly recommend it as a wee treat!!

We were staying overnight at the Boath House which was a fabulous experience from beginning to end. Whilst the restaurant has a limited menu the choice offered options for us both, the food was beautifully presented and delicious. Perfect size portions that allowed us to enjoy each course without feeling uncomfortable full. It was lovely to relax in the lounge before dinner and again afterwards over coffee. The wine list offered a range of options, we chose a Sancerre which we thought was reasonably priced for the quality. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast was excellent too. We will definitely return.

My sister treated me and my other sister for afternoon tea as a Xmas gift yesterday afternoon. I am sorry to say the tea was a huge disappointment which was a shame as we were all looking forward to our day out. We sat in the lounge first which was nice then taken to the dining room to have the tea. Firstly the tea was luke warm as was the water so we asked for another pot of tea which wasn’t much better the cakes and sandwiches were so small you could hardly taste them we also asked for a glass of prosecco which cost £9 for just over half a glass I’m afraid for a place that’s supposed to be Michelin starred it doesn’t come close to it we have been to many places before and this was the worst by far I felt sorry for my sister who paid nearl £70 for three very poor teas.I feel it was a real shame as it has lovely surroundings you couldn’t even say they were busy with only another 2 couples.I certainly wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there which is a shame.

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

Stopped for the night while doing the NC500 with my husband and 8 + 9 year old kids, one of the only places in Thurso that you can have a sit down meal! Absolutely delicious meal, got the chicken Ceylon roll as a starter and it came out piping hot and so fresh!! The flavours were absolutely amazing! My husband had the medium spice chicken Ceylon curry and said it was amazing, the flavours and spices were absolutely spot on! I had the mild beef Ceylon curry and it was equally as good! All cooked fresh to order and you can tell as it was piping hot and so fresh to taste! There is a children’s menu for the fussier eaters, my daughter had spaghetti and my son had a burger and there was no complaints from them! Our first time trying Sri Lanka food and won’t be our last thanks to this restaurant! Staff are delightful as well☺️
