Boars Head in Wigan

We travelled over from Manchester to visit my sister who was having a Birthday meal with family ( 6 people in our group ) upon arrival we found it hard to find a disabled parking space as i am disabled, we managed to park the car in a spot near back of the pub, i then had a slow walk to meet my family. After being seated the young lad who was our server was very polite and attentive to us, we all ordered drinks & then we ordered The roast dinner's the wait for our food was a long time wait, but our server was still nice, and explained the delay in our meals. We enjoyed our meals however our roast potatoes were not really Roasted, more like browned, and the sausage wrapped in bacon was under cooked but this was just our opinion. All in all the Sunday dinner was really nice, and we followed it with coffee and deserts, My biggest Disappointment was their was no DISABLED toilets at your pub, & i found it a real struggle to walk round the pub to get to the gents & my carer had to assist me incase i fell, Thank you again to the staff for a pleasant afternoon for my sister's Birthday.

Stopped here for lunch, the service was exceptional, the burger was huge, too uncooked for me, but other half loved it. The ham and chutney sandwich came with no chutney, the ham was very thick, I’m fussy so wasn’t to my taste, but it was lean and I’m sure would have been great the chips were lovely too. All the meals that came out looked lovely as did the pizzas ~ would recommend.

Second visit in the last month. Brought our 4 year old daughter today. Really good chips, kebabs very tasty. Good quality products. Daughter really enjoyed the dessert of brownie and ice cream - good option for kids. Wasn’t keen on the ham but that is personal preference, everything else was very very good. Will be returning for sure!

I have been here before on a Sunday and it was amazing food was delish and service was good, however we went on Monday for lunch and was disappointed ordered baguette mine was beef with onions, the beef was cold and not cut up in strips like it should be. My husband and daughter had the cheese and onion on baguette and it was just grated cheap cheese and not enough of it and not even melted. I personally thought at £10 odd each was quite expensive only the service and the setting was ok

Very highly priced food, didn't even think the place was open from the front it looks so run down. These are Manchester prices, and don't believe the menu on the website, it doesn't reflect the actual price you pay, I think they use it to bring people in as one post stated Stay away.

Visited for lunch. Sat out the front, lovely pint and great chicken and pesto panini with chips and salad, tasted great and all was decent value, staff mostly friendly and will defo be back

Can't believe we have never eaten here before as we eat out often. Can't fault this beautiful little pub. Food was lovely, service brilliant,will definitely go back.

The family chose here for my brother in laws wake, Mandy & co were very welcoming and friendly . As there were only 13 of us we all chose off the menu, the food was exceptional and lots of it, everyone commented on the food and excellent service. I personally thought the gravy on my meal was one of the best I've tasted. Will definitely be going again .

We decided to go out for a lunch at the Boars Head. Before we went I checked out the menu, seemed ok. Once we arrived I found the prices had increased by 50 Per Cent I put that down to their not updating their website, easy mistake, but as they say "the devil is in the detail". The staff on arrival were friendly, which is more than can be said for the waitress who served us, and the girl who we paid. As I was a little shocked about the price we opted for a Steak Sandwich. It looked great, however the meat was extremely chewy and the chips were tasteless. The crowning glory was when couples started arriving with dogs. My pet hate animals in food outlets I don't think I'll be going there again.

I have to say that the food is excellent, freshly cooked, hot and very big tasty portions. Unfortunately the service lets it down. The staff appear to be more interested in talking to each other or their friends who were in drinking. Not very attentive and we had to either go to the bar or try our best to get their attention when we wanted drinks. On top of this our mains came out whilst we were still on our starters. I would eat here again but service could be better.

For three decades, this establishment has been our local. . I can sincerely attest that it has never been better. The ambiance, cleanliness, and friendliness are unparalleled, and the food is superb. They serve genuine, well-prepared, fresh, hearty pub grub, and their fish and chips are exceptional! The servings are generous, offering outstanding value for money, especially during their promotional events. Every Friday and Saturday, they provide fantastic entertainment, primarily tailored to those over 40. It's a perfect spot for us locals, and I can't praise it enough. Sadly, we recently experienced a family loss and selected the Boars Head for the funeral reception. They went above and beyond. The buffet was fresh, hot, and ready upon our arrival on a cold winter morning. The staff were respectful and attentive, and the Landlords greeted us upon arrival. We couldn't have asked for more. Congratulations to the Boars Head team!

Out for a nice lunch just wanted something to pick at ploughman’s was amazing at £15.95 then £29.50 for a bottle of wine and £6.50 for a pint extortionate!!! We eat out frequently but at these prices won’t be returning at the end of the day it’s a pub at lunch time.

Moved to the area recently and wanted to check out The Boar’s Head as every time we drive past it’s full. They managed to fit us in on a busy Sunday where lots of tables were already booked up, so we appreciated that a lot as we were starving! The food did not disappoint! We both had the roast beef dinner and it was delicious! The portions are large, the vegetables and meat are cooked really well. Provided us with all the sauces we asked for and the staff were lovely and attentive. We went again a few weeks later with our friends and I requested a smaller portion of the beef dinner which they were happy to do (blue plate in the photo is small portion). Still a decent sized portion and equally as tasty. My husband loves the chicken skewers and our friends loved the food. We try and make it to The Boar’s Head for a meal at least once a month if not more. Lovely place and I look forward to going every time, and always come away full and happy!

Dined here a few weeks ago… ordered steak and ale pie with hand cut chips and fresh veggies - got frozen French fries with frozen peas. What a disappointment.. offered us a £1 discount. What a joke. Won’t be going back

Ordered steak & ale pie, homemade chips & vegetables. Got pie with no ale, frozen french fries & frozen peas, dreadful for 16 quid. They knocked a quid off due to shortage of veg. Icing on the cake, our waitress & the barmaid were talking about us as we left, I can lip read. Marvellous experience

Absolutely Fabulous food,the manager was very attentive making sure we got everything we needed, lovely man, also Joe the barman /waiter was equally as attentive and even put music on at my request as the pub had emptied lovely young man , we will definitely go back and have recommended you to our friends Excellent value for money as they have an offer on at moment until end of November well worth a visit . Popped in for lunch today. As usual, Janet, Tony and the team were as welcoming and efficient as always. love the atmosphere in this lovely pub. Ordered the steak and ale pie, and it was delicious. Would recommend that you give it a try, it’s the perfect yummy comfort food. The Boars Head never disappoints and I love visiting. 😃

The Boars Head was the perfect place to meet up. The car park is spacious and easy to get into. The staff made us all very welcome and helped us to find the best place to sit as a party of eight people. The food was excellent and extremely good value. The menu had choices to suit all tastes, and the bar had a good selection of beers and soft drinks. Highly recommended.

Mediocre for the price chilli, fish platter,King prawn ,garlic mushrooms everything was OK but nothing to shout about the fish platter and the king prawns where very nice but frozen chips and fresh onion rings which had way too much batter on them making them sogy(knock off bill)and the price of drinks where dearer than the food large glass of wine over £7.50 wouldn't be somewhere I would go again as lots of places nicer and better value in my opinion

Place was welcoming, our waiter Joe was very attentive and lovely to me and my mother. Food was great and all served at adequate times. Definitely one to come back to.

We stopped off at the Boar's Head in Standish for drinks and food on a Friday evening. The decor is good with a heated outdoor space. The food and drinks were good and the staff were quite friendly. The only drawback were the toilets which would need improving and updating. Hopefully when we return this will have changed.

Came here today after a long drive up from South Wales and were looking for somewhere to stop for a late lunch.We saw the lovely outdoor seating area so thought we'd give it a go.Im so glad we did as the food was delicious. My husband had gammon and chips which looked fabulous and I ordered a ploughman's. I've got to say,it was the best ploughman's I've had anywhere. Beautifully presented and delicious. Staff were friendly too.If we are ever up this way again we will be sure to return.

The culinary offerings at this establishment are nothing short of remarkable. I had the pleasure of ordering the Halloumi kebab, which arrived fresh, piping hot, and exquisitely delicious. The quality of the food was truly outstanding, leaving a lasting impression. Additionally, the staff members contributed to the overall enjoyment of the dining experience. Their friendly and amiable demeanor, coupled with engaging conversations, added a personal touch to the meal. While it is true that the food service might have been a tad slow, the ultimate reward of the exceptional gastronomy made the wait entirely worthwhile.

It pains me to leave this review as the pub was recommended to us by local friends and I have been having Sunday lunch in and around Wigan for the last 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed the meals we have had. I’m 71 and an experienced Sunday luncher so was very disappointed with the Pub overall and the food can only be described as terrible. The Pub is very tired to say the least and the bar and interior I don’t think has seen a coat of polish in a few years. It was a glorious summer day but the large beer garden and the back of the propery was locked and the only real outside space for sitting was the patio area overlooking the car park! . We ended up in the timber chalet area at the rear of the pub and bombasted with garage type pop music which might have been good if your under 20 and wanted a Rave! - but hardly the right atmosphere for a family Sunday lunch. I was surprised at the amount of food left on the plates of one family eating next to us - hardly a good sign for ‘home cooking’ - I ended up choosing the chicken curry as I didn’t see anything on the menu that looked enticing. My partner ended up with a plate of chips as the vegetarian choices were so thin on the ground- the chicken had been broiled and was a tough as old leather so not the marinated meal that I anticipated. Overall we were very disappointed so it’s very unlikely that we will be returning!! - which is a shame as the pub used to have a super reputation but it seems to have lost its way.

Been here for some lunch today, food came over an hour late when ordered straight after friends meal, so we ate at different times. My fish was burnt to a crisp, and the cheese burger was tasteless also fillings just slapped on. Also ordered the mild curry for my daughter and she never touched it as it was spicy hot. Spoken to the manager, and what can I say I’m appalled with the customer service, telling us to not come back all we have done is winge, and we are now barred. Embarrassing me and my friends infront of the whole pub raising her voice telling us to leave it was disgusting!! Especially when it’s our job to report back about our meals and be truthful. I will not be returning back here regardless of us all being “barred”. I am very disappointed as I used to love going here for food with family/friends! Never have I ever been as embarrassed as I have never had a manager of her own business raising her voice and screaming in my face. Also after telling them we wasn’t happy and there would be a complaint going against them, they threatened to take it down so if there wasn’t an issue why would you take it down!!? Disgusting attitude and I am shocked the manager has their own business with the way they talk to there customers! Such a shame with how nice and friendly it used to be with the old owners!! Massively gone down hill.

So...our table was booked in advance, all was fine..until we came to order.I booked this place based on a previous visit being lovely, and was taking advantage of the eat out to help out offer as they were advertised, and listed on the government website as having registered for...My sister ordered for her and her children and then i placed my order for myself and my children literally about a minute later. Not only did I have to ask for an itemised receipt, i then queried why I had been charged full price for our soft drinks, as.spft drinks should have been included in the 'eat out to help out scheme'... (£2.80 for a pint of pepsi max!!!) I was then faced with the manageress at our table outside, who spoke to us in quite a rude manner, and stated that 'its my business and ill decide what I do or don't offer'. My sister's food came, and her children's, they ate and we were still waiting...30 mins..still waiting....55 minutes after having to ask our food arrives. Minus our garlic bread side order, which after having to ask arrived another 20 minutes later. I sent this back as it had taken that long it was no longer wanted...as well as being covered in slices of chilli pepper (not mentioned), and also at a price of £5.95 for a SIDE order of garlic bread?! The lady threaded in black.yhat brought this was lovely, apologised and brought me a refund for the garlic bread.Food was not pleasant, my son's chips were green and black, our burgers were tasteless and looked like 2 thin patties put together as well as being plastered with what can only described as just cold tomato puree and bits of pepper (also not mentioned on the menu)...fish was crispy almost burned, daughters 'mild curry, was too hot for even me, and tasted like the chip shop granules you can buy at the supermarket. Again she did not eat her meal.I asked the waitress to take the burger and informed her to let the kitchen know that it wasn't very nice.We continued to drink our overly priced drinks. A red haired gentleman cleared our glasses and asked how the food was...we proceeded to explain that it wasn't very nice and that nobody ate much/anything. Although he wasn't rude, he was defensive of the establishment and reluctantly offered me a refund on my meals but not on my sisters. He said he would need to check if he could provide her a refund as well as me. The next thing, the manageress from earlier came bounding to the table, barring us from the pub, warning us that we had better not return, stating that we had done nothing but complain since we got there, actually shouting at us in front of other customers, calling us liars and that we had not had to wait for our food, that It came out straight away! She refused to refund my sisters meals, and argued with us about our complaints. She then screamed that no Korean money would be coming back to our table and that we had to leave.I have never felt so bullied in all my life! I am appalled at the way they spoke to us and the quality of their food. They have hiked up ther prices, and are clearly scamming the government by still charging full price on soft drinks.I have worked in the catering industry for almost 20 years and have never witnessed anything so hideous.So if you want to feel robbed by paying for tasteless food, and then be barred for telling them the truth then this is the place to go!!!I WILL be reporting them also to our LOCAL Councillor, as its genuinely in human to treat people to way we were treated today.We were also threatened by saying that there is no point writing a review as it will just be taken straight down. Absolutley ruined our day and upset my children. Even if I hadn't been barred I would never return to this pub.

First time I've ever been here and the food was really delicious. We had the chicken burger and beef burger which were amazing. Our daughter had chicken nuggets which were home made and she loved them.

Went with family for the first time. Place was very busy but as we booked a table it was ready for us on arrival.. Drinks ordered & food.. Starters arrived & were good.. Took a while for mains to come but were ok for me.. Others on the table enjoyed theirs.. To me it was average pub food not offensive but average. Staff mostly young but friendly enough. Would I return probably not due the distance & I have better pub grub nearer home.

An amazing family welcoming pub. The service, from Land Lady down through all bar and kitchen staff is absolutely outstanding. The Food is consistently fantastic and the beers are well kept by an excellent cellar .... Could not recommend this pub too much. Be sure to book a table!

Enjoyed a lovely meal there last night, home cooked and generous portions steak and ale pudding and chips was delicious , there was 8 of us and we all really enjoyed our food . Very friendly welcome from the staff and great service would definitely recommend.

We visited the Boar's head and were pleasantly surprised with the refurbished deco, the pub still had some of its rustic charm with a modern twist. I can highly recommend the club sandwichws, and chunky chips

We regularly go to the Boars Head for our tea and are never disappointed. The staff are excellent can’t do enough for you, the homemade pies are worth the wait best C&O pie we’ve ever had. Strongly recommend 👍

What a gem of a local pub found in Standish. Super friendly staff and a great variety of food and drink.

Didn't eat, just popped in for a quick drink, but because of the tables booked for food there was nowhere to sit.

We've visited this pub on several occasions over the years and never had a bad meal. Today we were heavily defeated by the Club Sandwich which came with proper crispy home made chips. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Good music in background poppy but not invasive. Fantastic watering hole.

I reviewed this establishment some time ago and it was dire. The new management have done a fantastic job and everything is transformed. A must visit now.

Visited this pub/restaurant for the first time whilst working in the area, I found this family run pub very busy but still welcoming. My meal of gammon and two eggs with large chunky chips was cooked to perfection. What I really liked about this place was the lovely friendly atmosphere, loved this experience and will definitely come back.

My misses didn't even touch them,mentioned it to the staff,they apologized and still charged us for it! Even when mentioned it to the staff the reply was "This is how we serve them" i will never be back and won't recommend it to anyone!!! Big mistake to give it a try!!!

Booked to go to this restaurant for a family meal on booking day the meal arrived and was very tasty and very large portions but what spoilt the occasion was when my three year old granddaughter was playing under the table and came up playing with what I thought was something plastic left over from Xmas crackers but it turned out to be a big BLOB of chewing gum it really spoilt the meals I don't blame the cleaners but knowing what some people get up to you would think management would check occasionally

Great menu offering delicious food. We’ve been several times and not been disappointed with the food or the portion sizes - you probably won’t need a starter! Lovely staff and effective management. Thank you.

Popped in here for lunch as we drove past and thought it looked nice. Loved it! Staff were fantastic and very friendly. We were warned that our food would be an hour wait as a big party was in having a Xmas lunch which we were fine with but it was out way before the hour was up. Food was beautiful so much so we have booked in for Sunday lunch tomorrow. Loved the decor, staff and food so all round winner. Looking forward to lunch tomorrow.

Fantastic bar/restaurant with friendly staff that added to our experience. The food was fantastic. The decor was stunning and not what we expected. We came from out of town and we will definitely be back again. May book tables for the works Christmas party. If this is pub of the year I can see why. Well done.

We live very close to the boars head and have frequented regularly, but can honestly say we will never visit again. We sat at a table, which did not have a reserved sign on and were asked to move, no problem it was a mistake. We moved to another table, 5 minutes later we were asked to move as someone wanted to eat. We moved. We then sat at another table and witnessed what I can only describe as the most condescending and insulting conversation I have ever seen. A group of young adults complained about a very long wait and a mistake in taking the order by the waiter. The way that the manager spoke to those young people was disgusting. She ridiculed them and barely even scraped an apology. I was amazed that someone working in a customer service environment would treat customers so badly. Never going back.

Cosy pub. Recently won pub of the year. Popular pub and nice location. Music was loud a little too loud for eating.

We had fish chips last week at the Boar’s Head which was good value compared to the week before at Alberts in Standish. Their fish chips was not as good and a lot more expensive.
