Blue Lion Inn in West Devon

Amazing Inn, if you are on vacation in the area this is a must stop for the night. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is the perfect English pub in the English countryside. The building has history which makes it so charming. And the best part of it all is the customer service. The folks that own this Inn and pub are absolutely fantastic! They were so friendly especially the gentleman who runs the place, we had such a good time and many laughs. Highly recommended. Thanks for having us, the Canadian couple.

Very, very friendly service!!! The food was very good! Had a rump steak that was cooked to perfection. My wife simple fish & chips and very tasty too! As a starter there was baked bread with mushy peas. That was really awesome!! We shared it as an appetizer and were pleasantly surprised!! Unfortunately we couldn't try dessert anymore because we were totally full!! So, decent portions!! As a small note: the host personally gave our dog a few treats, which I personally found very nice!! We were absolutely satisfied and can recommend this restaurant without hesitation!!

Excellent find. We needed a room for one night. Can't find one fault on this little gem. Our Room was very comfortable and extremely clean throughout. We had an evening meal here. Wow! Excellent is an understatement and as for their Beer it was Nye on perfect. The staff were so welcoming and cheerful and really made you feel comfortable. 10/10 Thank you Blue Lion 🦁😍❤️

Top 👍🏻 Sehr, sehr Gastfreundlich! Sehr zuvorkommendes und freundliches Personal!! Das Essen ist gut Bürgerlich mit schönen Finessen! Wir hatten als Vorspeise das Gebackene Brot mit Erbsenmus und Tomaten. Das war sehr kreativ und sehr lecker! Als Hauptspeisen hatten wir das Original Fish& Chips und das 10 oz ca(280g) Steak mit Pommes! Habe das Steak medium bestellt und es war auf den Punkt zubereitet!! Haben untereinander probiert und beide haben des anderen Essen gelobt! Einfache Gerichte perfekt zubereitet 😋 Der Wirt selbst hat in einer kleinen Pause sogar noch unserem Hund ein paar Leckerlis gegeben, was ich persönlich eine sehr schöne Geste fand! Schade das wir das Lokal so spät entdeckt haben, wären gerne öfters gekommen!

Had dinner at the Blue Lion this evening. Food has got better and better with every visit. The burger was better than almost any I can remember from anywhere and the atmosphere is great on a Friday evening. Highly recommend for those looking for top quality pub food in the area. Sadly forgot to take photos… again…!

Lovely overnight stay. The food was good and reasonably priced too. Staff were welcoming and the pub was well supported by locals and others from further afield, which meant there was a great atmosphere too.

The latest chef joined last month, from the Oxenham Arms. My goodness he can cook! our two most recent meals have produced dishes of the highest quality, right up there with the well known local gastro pubs in the area and at a fraction of the price! Last night we both had the chicken dish off of the specials board, absolutely perfect, mouthwateringly succulent; cannot fault it. As good as we've eaten anywhere and only £15-95. The pubs has several perfectly kept ales and a varied and keenly priced wine list. Recommended.

Update. Have since tried the Sunday roast and Xmas menu and both were excellent. Keep up the good work! Came in for lunch the other Saturday. Everyone happy with their meals, lovely homemade chips worth a mention. Only critic is I had the market fish special and whilst lovely, it could have done with some veg at £18.95. My only other wishlist would be to have a Devon cider on tap rather than Inches. Planning on coming back to try the new Sunday roast menu. Cheers

Four of us ate there last night and the food service and atmosphere are so good that we are going to make it our local. Fantastic menu and specials board.. triple cooked chips omg. Back very soon.

The "new" chef joined in August and has significantly improved things. There is now a varied and oft-changing specials board and the portions are now generous. The Fish & Chips are extremely good and fresh from Brixham. The Spiced Lamb in flatbread is fantastic. The Blue serves very good food and is excellent value - average mains price is £15. The "popcorn" shrimp is a lovely starter dish, enough for two to share. The wines are of good quality with a variety of grapes and styles offered and all are very fairly priced. There are usually 3 or 4 real ales on tap and they are always kept immaculately. proper pub; proper pub food.

Popped in here off the cuff on the drive back from Launceston and we are so glad we did! This is by far the best freehold we’ve been in for a while 👍🏻 We had a veggie tagine and the steak pie. Both meals were beautiful but that pie is still being talked about weeks later. The chef here is doing a wonderful job. If you’re looking for a solid 10/10 place to eat and drink and you’re in the area, chose this place!

We visited here a couple of year’s ago and the standard is still high. Great choice of three local draught beers and the Wicked Wolf gin was particularly appreciated. We started with crayfish and wasabi cocktail. Frankly, this knocked a prawn cocktail into a cocked hat! Original and delicious. My wife had river trout served on crushed new potatoes and mini French beans. It was beautifully presented and the white wine and caper sauce raised the dish to a higher level. A sublimely delicious dish. I went for thick cut ham, fried duck’s egg and chips. It was anything but boring and bland. 10/10. A great pub, friendly welcome and good atmosphere.

A bit pricey at £90.00 for a room and with only a continental breakfast laid on. However, the room was excellent and clean, and i slept very well in the large double bed.

Visited last night with friends who have recently moved to the area. Lovely local pub with friendly landlord and punters. We all had different dishes and were all delighted with our meals. I had partridge for the first time and it was beautiful. Will definitely return next time we are visiting.

Stayed here two nights and the food and company were fantastic. Pie of the day amazing, venison haunch was unreal and they can pour a fantastic Guinness. The people are friendly and the pub os brilliant. 5 stars does npt dp th justice.

Had a meal and a pint a couple of nights ago. Friendly barman excellent steak & ale pie with creamy mash potatoes. Nice pub atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Lovely grade ll listed pub, the landlord and the staff were very helpful & friendly so too are the locals, rooms are clean & comfortable, food was lovely. A breakfast of cereals toast, fruit, yoghurt, tea & coffee is available at an extra cost. Would definitely stay again.

Brilliant, stopped here on way to Newquay. A wide selection on the menu, local Beers clean tidy rooms friendly staff lovely food.

The room was clean and comfy. Just what you want for the one night. Owner was very helpful and the food in the pub was excellent and they were very accommodating in changing food for you. Would highly recommend!!

Much like a well used book, the cover may not be quite as good as the content. So a warm welcome, accommodating for our various dietary needs, decent ale and rather excellent food.

My family of 16 were staying local so booked us all in for Sunday lunch ,service & food was excellent ,everyone enjoyed it including the one veggie amongst us, service was very good & friendly .Choice of 2 meats pork or beef with a small ,med or large option ,there was plenty to eat on all of the choices .Well worth a visit if in the area .

A warm welcome from the hosts, a lovely room , comfortable bed and spotless . We had to leave early so did no stay for breakfast.

Late booked table for eight an excellent choice of game dishes including starter and mains. An outstanding venison haunch, and too many desserts to choose only one - so I shared three with my fellow guests. A great evening out and already planning a return visit.

We had a wonderful welcome from little A, the staff were amazingly friendly. The food was delicious and our Labrador was spoilt as well. We needed a much needed escape as we had, had no power all day and they throughly looked after us. A big thank you to you all.

Fine dining in a pub atmosphere! We saw the menu by chance ( you have to download it from their website to read it) and wow what a menu! We were told that this pub was a drinkers pub that only did chips but that couldn't be more wrong, it is a normal proper pub, really understated, so if you come upon it you'll be forgiven for driving by BUT DON'T! Open eves only in the week and all day at weekends, really friendly landlord and so accommodating, nothing too much trouble. We ate in the bar by the fire as we prefer that but they've got loads of space in their restaurant too. Food amazing and as described, tbh it was better (and better value) than the luxury hotel we were staying in just 2 minutes away by car. If you are in the locality do not pass this gem by, the landlord deserves to succeed!!

We holiday in Lifton every year but have never been here before as it always appeared to be more or a drinkers pub with a relatively basic menu….however it could not be further from that now in terms of menu choice! The new chef has created a fabulous menu and if you like good food you most certainly will not be disappointed here. All three courses we had were delicious and the crab bisque was particularly good. Very welcoming landlord and waitress, please go and try this place if you haven’t before as they truly deserve custom and recognition for what they now have to offer. We will just certainly be back when we next holiday in the area. Thank you for a lovely meal.

Clean, character rooms with friendly helpful host. Great downstairs bar with much more than typical pub fare (venison, pheasant) at a good price. Breakfast is toast/cereal, but overall, an excellent stay.

We ate with our family, including two young children, last Friday . We were given a very warm welcome , the staff were lovely with the children and nothing was too much trouble. The food and beer was excellent and really good value for money.

We visited on a Friday evening with two children for a family meal. The food was exceptional and obviously all freshly cooked and prepared on the premises. The service was fantastic and staff were very friendly and helpful. They were extremely family friendly and bent over backwards for the kids. Would HIGHLY recommend for the food and the service and most of all if you have children.

The new chef is great and restaurant menu is exciting and good value for money.

We've been using this pub for some time. It is a very welcoming, friendly and relaxed pub. The beers are really well kept:- (Jail; Doom and a guest e.g. Otter Amber). they now have a good wine list too. There is a large bar at the front, used by the locals and a couple of dining rooms behind (it is a large building and has guest rooms too). Recently a new professional chef has been taken on and he has produced an intresting menu (not "chips with everything"). In fact there are 2 menus; a Bar one and a Restaurant one - (you can dine from the restaurant one in the bar; but not vice versa). Last night from the Bar menu my wife had an excellent, (truly) homemade chicken & mushroom pie.(13-95) From the resto menu, I ordered the Lamb rump with spiced lentils and baba ganoush.(18-50). Superb, perfectly cooked lamb with gently spiced vegetables. all washed down with a very reasonably priced (17-95) cotes du rhone, reserve. A very pleasant way to spend an evening.

Stayed here overnight in a very in a well appointed room with a comfortable bed and slept like a log! Breakfast was a full English that was well cooked and presented with plenty of coffee. Didn't have to eat until the evening! It's a nice...

, we both ordered the steak and ale pie and waited at least 45 minutes and people who walked in after us were served before us and when it was served up the pastry was wet and totally raw looked microwaved and flamed over blackened...

The steak was amazing beautiful then chocolate brownie sundue well it was lovely x so happy we have moved to the area xx lots of visits from us

Our first visit this year and as usual we experienced a friendly and welcoming enviroment. We ate and enjoyed home cooked steak and ale pie with chips and salad. The food was tasty and excellent value.

Typical English country pub. Basic but very friendly and accommodating. Food again, typical pub food had vegan/vegetarian option and was delicious. Couldn't fault it really. Enjoyable evening and even the locals were friendly.

Wonderful break at this glorious country retreat. Attentive staff and very informative manager with regards the wine. Food was of the highest standard which was matched by the general ambience of the hotel. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Fun local pub with tons of friendly people who helped us find amazing places to visit. We rented one room there at the last minute for two nights on airbnb. It was completely worth it and cheap.

Super Pub, a real Local, Great Beer, Company, Live Music & Sunday Roast

Great local pub. When I come to visit my parents we often end up spending an evening or two here. Just what you want from a local, cosy, good beer, friendly landlord and a darts board! (Oh, and also a few sweets!). Really enjoy this little local, and well worth a visit - whether you live close or just passing by!
