Lovely food and attentive staff. Nice old pub with good local feel but welcoming to holidaymakers also. Food was good quality and a nice menu choice. They also did us a children's portion of and adult meal which was appreciated as it's nice for children to be able to try something different to the usual children's menu options.

This pub is a must. A little odd getting to it, but well worth it. We had the stack pie, and chicken, ham & leak pie followed by apple crumble. It was absolutely delicious and big portions. We left completely stuffed and very very happy. Definitely will be going back.

I love this place it has such character and the staff are wonderful too. I had the smoked chicken, bacon and avocado salad which had very generous portions. My husband had the Steak and Stilton Pie with seasonal vegetables which was delicious. We had the puddings which were delicious I had the Snickers and Peanut Cheesecake which was out of this world and my husband had the Rhubarb and White Chocolate Baked Cheesecake which was delicious too. I would highly recommend this pub

This is a beautiful country pub with classic English pub food. The food is excellent, well presented and plenty of choices. They also offer smaller portions but they weren’t too small. Staff are lovely and work very hard as the restaurant is very popular.

Visited this pub with family who live localish, didnt have high hopes when i saw it but the food surprised me. I had the chicken with goats cheese and chorizo and it was amazing, one of the nicest meals i’ve had in ages. Everyone else loved their food as well. Sadly, thats where the good ends. The staff seemed nice but there was a weird atmosphere and they kept glaring at us after we finished our main. We declined dessert but were finishing our drinks when a member of our party went to pay the bill (baring in mind they didnt ask if we wanted it) and he caught the staff bitching about us still being here and they wouldnt of let us in if they knew how long we’d take. There was plenty of empty tables and if they’d needed the table back they could have just said, i think we were only there an hour and a half which is pretty normal. They were also the ones to delay our mains whilst one person ate olives. Just sad really as it ruined a great meal and now we won’t go back.

It's become our go to pub on West Dartmoor whenever we visit.Consistenly good food and polite service.Definately not standard pub grub.

Proper country gastro pub and restaurant. Amazing breadth of food, including vegetarian options. Locally brewed beers and ales too. Atmosphere great. Highly recommended.

Beautiful inn, just mind your head on the low beams. Wonderful menu where you can have standard size meals or a smaller plate. For Sunday lunch you need to book.

Popped into this pub after a walk with a few friends, we didn't have a reservation but the lady managed to squeeze us in even though it was really busy. Very much appreciated! Nice vibe and the food was fantastic.

Fab very old pub. Had roast beef - bit light on veg, one small platter for three - no extra gravy. Food & service excellent though. Bar toilets very tight for space. Essential to book a table several customers turned away as no spaces whilst we were there.

Booked 1 week in advance for Saturday lunchtime, v busy, menu as online, friendly staff, we ate various sandwiches/baguettes and a steak and Stilton pie, v large portions and v tasty, served with excellent Jail Ale. A great lunch, many thanks we will return

We ate here today as part of a family group of 8 people. The food was absolutely delicious, 6 portions of roast beef, a toad on thehole and fish and chips. The roasts were a generous size, meat was cooked medium and eas beautifully tender with roast potatoes. Yorkshire pudding and dishes of perfectlu cooked vegetables for the table. Iy was nice to see a childs nenu and also smaller portions of tge majotity of main courses dushes - perfect for smaller appetites. We all ordered deserts that included ice cream ( about 8 different flavours !!), creme brulee, cheese and biscuits and chocolate and coconut tart all of our party thought thry were delicious - I can't believe we found room to finish them as again alll a really good size. The pub was full but tables were a good size and well positioned so it didnt feel crampedf - perfect cosy atmosphere for this time of year. The srtaff wete super efficient and very friendly. We'll be returning soon as couldn't fault this lovely country pub.

Four family members stopped at the Peter Tavy for lunch. We hadn’t booked a table and were surprised how busy it was mid week. Friendly and polite staff showed us to a table near the lovely log fire. We chose beef and Stilton pie, sea bass and 2 roast beef. The wait for food was not very long and all dishes came piping hot with a selection of 4 vegetables. We commented on how much meat was in the pie, which my husband said was delicious, as were the other meals. Another thing that we especially liked was that for many items on the menu, there was the option of a smaller portion, which was great as we don’t like wasting food and the smaller portion was still a decent amount for those with a smaller appetite. We thank the staff for being courteous and attentive. We will certainly be back.

Managed to get us in and served quickly at the end of service one day. Great food and quality ales. Portion size is good value and there was a nice buzz about the place.

If your after a good meal look no further. The meals in this pub are beyond good they're sublime. The staff are more than friendly and very attentive. Free parked in the car park for the night. This pub was picked out of the blue. What a pick. If your within 1 hour of this pub, visit and you won't be disappointed. ENJOY 😊

We went in October 2024 for lunch with family. The Peter Tavy is a very popular pub on the edge of Dartmoor, and known for its ambience and excellent food. It's an old Inn and was complete with low ceilings, fireplaces, and wooden beams . We'd booked a table as we know it can be busy, and the team at the pub were expecting us. For myself, I had the Ham, Egg and Chips, and I can honestly say that it was the best ham I have ever been served in a pub, and I don't normally heap praise like that easily. The eggs were good, too, as were the chips. I also had a couple of pints of Tavistock Golden Ale, which is brewed locally and is a really good, bitter, beer. I live in Canada and miss a good English pint, so the Golden Ale was real high point my fortnight in the UK. The service was excellent; fast and efficient with very friendly staff. I can't speak to prices as the meal was paid for us, but I believe the bill was quite reasonable. The pub is a little off the beaten track (you get to it seemingly through a farm yard), but it's well worth the effort.

Hungry on a Saturday afternoon near Tavistock and went here hoping for lunch. Got there at 2.10pm and the kitchen stopped working at 2.00PM. So had nothing and walked out.

Amazing located in the countryside, food was great and atmosphere amazing

Simply excellent. Good beer.Good food. Good service. At the end of our excellent lunch our car wouldn't start ! Flat battery. We would still be there were it not for the friendly farmer down the lane. He drove his digger up the lane and with his jump leads had us going in 10 mins. Superb Devon hospitality. Well recommended.

We visited the Peter Tavy Inn a couple of times, not too much to complain about here really but I'd say the Inn is perhaps a victim of it's own success. The service was a little variable at busy times, new staff on didn't help matters. The car park became rammed full and chaotic on the first visit, folk attempting 3 point turns to get out rather than reversing back out as no spaces free, fun to watch but I was pleased my car was well out of the way. We both had a diet coke on the first visit and were disappointed with it's odd flavour, strangely it was much more enjoyable on the second visit and totally different! Food was good though, roast beef, casserole and pies all very enjoyable and well presented.

This is undoubtedly our favourite place to eat in the area. The pies are the best we have ever eaten, althoughthere are many other good options as well. There is always a warm welcome and dogs are welcome too.

An evening meal with friends in pleasant & historic surroundings. A warm welcome on arrival, after ordering our drinks we were seated & left to peruse the menu, which offered a good selection of courses. One of the party has a food allergy & this was understood which made selecting our food straight forward. The meal, both main and sweat, for each of the group, was excellent, well presented & cooked to perfection. This was supported by excellent service. While our fiends are local(ish) we were visiting for the first time and we look forward to coming back to the Inn in the not too distant future. I can’t recommend the Inn, its meals & its staff, highly enough.

Beautiful country pub, tucked away next to a lovely church. Excellent ale, we both had the roast beef, which we can't fault followed by toffee pudding. We will definitely return, only fault was we could find anywhere to padlock our bikes to.

The steak and Stilton pie is excellent but if you want a dessert too then best order a small portion! Also great are the Tavistock ales, both 'Golden" and the stronger "English", brewed only a short distance away on the edge of the moor. Nice pub with friendly service.

Biked down to Petre Tavy Inn from Okehampton, and received a warm welcome from the bar staff. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and went through the day's lunch options and recommended the Steak and Stilton pie. The pie was perfect, with shortcrust pastry on top and bottom, I presumed was homemade with ample steak filling. Several selections of beers available the "Jail House" was perfect. Overall I can recommend: The staff, food, beer and the overall atmosphere 100%

Had a really lovely meal with my family today.. In fact the vegetarian lasagne was one of the best I’ve tasted.. staff were lovely and attentive.. lovely outdoor seating areas. also noticed they have lovely looking accommodation adjacent to the pub.. Highly recommend eating here.

Stopped off here for a pint after a long hike on the Moor. Good selection of beer. Sat in the shady beer garden under an apple tree and enjoyed a well earned pint of Tavistock Ale and a packet of crisps (salt n vinegar) if you're interested!

Keen Dartmoor Walkers who have visited many of the pubs across the Moors after a good walk and even though there are many good pubs/Inns, the Peter Tavy is the 'Tops'!

Fantastic place great food and beers real ale the staff our exceptional jack was knowledgeable and very professional good sense of humour and polite the food had options to have a smsll main meal if couldn't eat the full main which is big for some people all in all a great experience it's between 10 and 26 pounds so not much considering the quality 😀 😋

What a great place!!! We came out of the hills on our mountain bikes and wanted something to eat. It started to rain, and suddenly there was the Peter Tavy Inn. We did not immediately understand the system for ordering at the bar, but the owner came to tell us with a cheerful smile and simply took our order for convenience. Chicken Curry for me and Pie & Stilton for Kirsty. Heavenly, so tasty. Just add 2 cokes for the much-needed sugar and a double espresso afterwards. We could take on the whole world again. Highly, highly recommended!!!!

Food is always good but the waiting times were exceptionally slow last time, we had to wait over 45 for sweet order to arrive and inlaws fell asleep. Hopefully problems will be resolved, service had been more efficient previously.

Came here for lunch with friends. This was my first time and definitely won’t be the last. The pub is cosy and full of character. It was really busy, being a lovely summer’s day, but this didn’t cause any issues with service. All staff were very efficient and helpful. The four of us ordered different meals but they came out at the same time and all were delicious and good value. Good size car park also,

Nice place, friendly staff FOH, shame they can't cook a decent steak. After waiting a long time (maybe 40 minutes as they had a large table who had just ordered) for our food, the steak came and was over done and under done at the same time. Zero charing on the outside, light brown and sloppy, but also barely pink on the inside. If you can't cook a good steak, take it off the menu. I do get pretty fed up of paying top whack for a meal, only for it to be worse than I could have made at home, and after such a wait, I didn't want to wait longer and send it back. We were asked if we wanted desert, which we declined. One of the more senior members of staff then came out and apologised about the steak (as I did say something when they brought it out) and then said "you didn't want a desert, we would have let you have it free", which I honestly don't believe for a second. They way she said it left no room for us to change our minds. I won't be going back.

All 4 of us can honestly say that the Steak & Stolton Pie & the Chicken, Ham & Leek pie were the BEST weve ever had!! Jam-packed full of meat, melt on the mouth pastry served piping hot on hot plates. The saute potatoes & veg were also piping hot & all cooked to perfection. We were offered a top-up on the veg if we needed, but the portions were so generous, we didn't need any extra. I'd planned to have a pudding, but couldn't fit one in! The service was excellent & very friendly. Lovely atmosphere. Will deffinately be going again.

All I can say is 5 of us had meals and we all enjoy our food, friendly staff good atmosphere, would recommend, and we will be going back.

Been coming for years - an absolutely quality pub. Great food, accommodating staff and good beer. Parking can get full quickly but there is ample street parking around the church.

Didn't book on a bank holiday, but they squeezed us in and said they have a table free for 1.5 hours. I had the steak and Stilton pie after reading the reviews on here....very impressed, it was AMAZING pie. Wife had the brie and cranberry pannini, which she enjoyed. Thanks to the lovely staff there for squeezing us in. All the food around us looked amazing too.

Had lunch on a lovely sunny day. Sat outside and enjoyed a good lunch. Vegan menu lunch menu as well as traditional menu was very welcome. Fast service, good food, good selection of beer and wine. Have booked for dinner later this week.

Lovely old pub. Been a couple of times both busy and friendly. Very traditional well cooked food. Staff friendly and service efficient but no hurried. Sat with a bowl of rich lamb stew next to a log burner, couldn't ask for much more.

Tucked away in a small village / farming community. A beautiful pub that serves excellent food. The staff and table service during the evening is very good.
