Blue Jay Bar & Kitchen in Cardiff

Really nice place, the staff are excellent, the coffee is amazing and the food is good too!

So I want to Blue Jay Bar yesterday for furmeet event, the venue is really lovely inside with a lot of space for furries and it is well designed including upstairs. Now I haven’t tried the food sadly but I been hearing is lovely and staff are great too. The only problems I seen is some of lights don’t work or some are flickering which I’m sure does be fixed soon and me & my friend did notice upstairs the ventilator is leaking. But all in all, I well come to this place again (for furmeet obviously) I will give update on this review with the food when I’m going to try them, I see you all again soon. Visited Sunday, it's a fantastic venue with lovely food and drink. Staff are very polite and prompt, pricing was fair and the service all round was brilliant. Looking forward to visiting again!

Ordered drinks... menu was basic, and did not advertise allergens. We were also not asked about allergens. Never offered water so water glasses stayed empty on the table. Ordered food, waited 70 minutes for the food which never showed. Left without eating. Toilets were out of order, 2nd lot of toilet I had to walk through a completely unlit dance floor to reach (make sure your phone has a torch).

The food was amazing, I had the chicken burger, the others had tikka masala and korma, everyone really enjoyed their food. The drinks were very good, spirits come as doubles, and really well priced! Beautiful decor too.

Our starters were delicious: fried cauliflower and lamb kebab bites. Our curries weren't to our liking, which we told the server, and they were really gracious and took the price of one of them off our bill. Fantastic service, gorgeous décor and atmosphere. Really quite impressed and will be returning to try the tapas/light bites in the deal.

Cardiff’s best kept secret. Cocktails and food are superb and represent value for money. Service can be slow at times but servers are incredibly polite and happy to do anything for you - quality of food from tapas menu is exceptional: well-presented and lovely taste. A regular haunt for my partner and I. Definitely somewhere where you can have quiet drinks - I’m surprised more people don’t know about this place!

Only went here for drinks, it was extortionate for a parma violate gin & lemonade & a double captain Morgan and a small bottle of coke, fairly quiet inside, its an okay place to stop if you're waiting for a show

It was lunchtime on a Sunday so it was very quiet but the food and service were excellent, so good that we booked again for a couple of weeks time.

Never ever again going to visit the place again. Been treated by the staff poorly. Get your staffs’ attitude and rude behaviour out and treat customers with decency and respect. Your staff crossed a line. We left immediately after the incident. Never ever going back, what a waste of our time and emotional energy. Food was mediocre, avoid.

Absolutely terrible service feel so unwelcomed soon as me and my boyfriend walked in we made a reservation at 8:30 told the one waiter that we booked who looked shocked and didn’t know anything about it was constantly stared at by him then took a while to get menus and then soon as we go and order refuses service and kicks me and my boyfriend out because he’s 18. Apparently it’s an over 19s restaurant which I’ve never heard of such a thing no signage or anything to show this policy. He even made a reservation online which asked for id and allowed him to book so they would’ve known this wasn’t even made aware of it until after we sat down we got home to look at reviews to see that it’s not an under 19 restaurant as it’s “family & kid friendly” absolutely shocking service and treatment towards me and my boyfriend will never go there again especially after the feeling we both got from the staff who made us feel very uncomfortable

Booked a table for half 8, soon as me and my partner walked in we felt very judged, the waiter sat us down, then handed us the menus and disappeared, asked him if we go to the bar, he took my id and then told me and my partner to leave as I was 18 but the venue is apparently over 19, I’m a manger in a pub I’ve never heard of such thing, and should of been made aware before booking!

Great place to eat. Delicious Vegan options, nice vibe and friendly staff. We went Friday evening before a gig at the International arena. Only slight gripe I had was the service was a little slow. It was really quiet too so would expect it to be quicker. But they more than made up for it in every other area. I'd highly recommend the Vegan mushrooms and the Vegan Cauliflower dish. Although beware if you don't like hot food as the cauliflower dish had a little kick which I didn't expect but was really good nonetheless.

Too big, doesn't know what it wants to be isnit a bar is it a restaurant. The menu made no sense, I had crisps with my burger as they'd ran out of onion rings. Chicken Tikka masala and katsu chicken were both quite spicy, even the burger tasted of chilli's.

The food me and my partner had was lovely and couldn't really fault it I had the prawn byriani which was amazing my partner had a beef burger that was amazing. My daughters had chicken burgers which was pretty dry and lacked a little flavour. Service was good although it felt to my partner and daughters the waiters were acknowledging me before them. I would go there again

The menu's we were given didn't mention the Tapas deal, but did have some dishes with asterisks and a note at the bottom that said they were excluded from the 4 for £25 offer. Because of this contradiction we asked our waiter if the tapas deal was on or not. He told us that it was, but the two dishes marked with stars were excluded. We spent some time deciding, only for a different member of staff who took our order to tell us the deal wasn't on that day. We mentioned that the other member of staff had told us it was, and then for some reason they went and brought the manger and the other member of staff to our table so we could have an awkward conversation about who said what and why there was confusion. Completely unnecessary. We then took some more time to order something else from the menu. In the meantime our drinks arrived, and those of us who had ordered soft drinks found that they had been watered down to the point that they tasted disgusting. We could tell just by looking at the colour of them that this was the case. When our food arrived, the waiter asked if we wanted any sauces or anything. We asked for some salt. He came back with a cup of tomato ketchup. The food wasn't too bad. Sweet potato fries very nice, burgers good, tikka masala decent. We wanted some other drinks during our meal, one of our party went up to the bar during our meal because no members of staff ever came to check on us. He returned after 10 minutes fed up of waiting at the bar. After our meal it took forever to get the bill. We decided against desert because we were bored of waiting at this point. It took us a total of 1 hour 45 minutes to have just a main course. Overall, pros: * Nice decor * Convenient location * Decent food Cons: * Confusing menus with some staff saying one thing and some saying another * Awful watered down drinks * Not enough staff for how busy the place was * Slow slow slow

Food was great but slow service & poor drink quality

Place looks nice, don't be deceived. Table of 8 booked for food, ordered food 35 minutes after sitting down. It had taken 20 minutes between first person being served their main meal between the next person being served. And then another 30 minutes for thr final 3 people to be served. Incorrect orders for main meals, and then when asked when food will be served we were told "it'll be here shortly" then when we had asked about discount on the final bill they magically appeared with the remaining food. Which was wrong, sweet chilli sauce on the nachos instead of salsa.... said they'd give us discount off the bill but only took off the bacon add-ons off the burger orders. Save yourself from a terrible service and go McDonald's! ABSOLUTE JOKE!

We dined here last night. A lovely restaurant. We ordered the tapas which was so good! All cooked to perfection and fresh. Excellent service too. Would highly recommend a visit and will dine here again.

The service was awful, took over 20 minutes just to make our cocktails. They seemed very short staffed no one came to our table so we got up and asked about food they said they would be over with some menu's and then we waited another 20 minutes and no one came! We left and ate somewhere else.

Authentic Indian taste, one of the best in Cardiff. Absolutely love their Hara Bhara Kabab, Crispy Cauliflower and Paneer Butter Masala. I’m yet to find a naan as good as theirs’ anywhere in the city as yet! Will keep coming back here for lovely meals.

My husband was given a Groupon voucher for his birthday for this restaurant. We booked a table but then had to cancel which I did over the phone and let them know we had a voucher. No problem they said just show us the voucher when you want to come. They redeemed the voucher even though we had not been to the restaurant. We phoned and I visited them in person to ask why they had redeemed it and they promised to sort it out. Nothing has happened and they have been very dishonest by redeeming it and my husband has missed out on £50 worth of food and drink.

The worst experience I have ever had in my entire life for hospitality. If there was an option available for it, I'd give this facility Zero stars. Me and a friend booked a table here a week in advance for a local event. We turned up on time to be seated. We were ignored by FOUR members of staff, waiting 10 minutes until I had to approach one and ask to be seated. After being sat a table, we waited over ten minutes to be acknowledged to attempt at making our order. That member for staff got pulled away by who I believe to be a manager, for us to be told '2 minutes please'. After 20 minutes, no one came back. The fact you call yourself a Kitchen is beyond a joke.

Dreadful service. Ordered food and drinks together food came and was reasonable but not great drinks however..... after our food came I went to the bar to ask where our drinks were.... it was chaos ! There was 1 person serving so the waiter was helping with people just wanting drink whilst people who had ordered with food seemed to be being ignored. I asked when our drinks would be with us and was told 2 mins, 5 mins later I went back to the bar only to find the same waiter was serving another person. He had no idea what he was doing and said I was next, then promptly served another woman at the other end of the bar..... then when I complained he made it put that it was my fault and I shouldn't be complaining. I said we had been waiting for 45 mins for out drinks and the guy behind me said he had been waiting for an hour.! We asked for the bill which cane but was not pur so we lift cash on the table and left. The place is a joke.

Nice pint clean and staff are friendly Downfall is adverts in window for happy hr buy one get one free etc are totally misleading they knew this but basically they chamged changed it to fosters only I don't mind spending £6 a pint without any offers and certainly have no issues paying but this was the decision maker with a group of friends on a budget from going into other venues Hopefully the terms amd conditions will be updated soon

Delicious food cooked fresh with generous portions. Restaurant is spacious and relaxing it has a great atmosphere for couples/friends/family. I would highly recommend to anyone. Staff are very friendly and welcoming!

1st visit: Popped in just to see what it was like, lovely staff and wine. Only had two starters, texas chicken wings were nice but must have been quail wings, Absolutely tiny. Chicken tikka nice flavour but dry and strange oil salsa as a dip. Decor and atmosphere strange, had a laugh. 2nd visit: Had a Groupon voucher and decided to try some curries, had the the chicken tikka and lamb rogan josh, both Absolutely stunning! proper authentic taste, can't think of any I've had that's better! Decor still needs changing, get rid of the awful green walls and will massively improve this place, would also just focus on the curries! Upped my rating from 3 to 4 👍

I went here with my boyfriend the other night. First of all I would like to say that the place looks amazing! It has lovely decor which looks very new and modern and it had drawn us in straight away. I found out about this place on Groupon which is an app I regularly use, they had a tapas deal on which was 4 tapas for 2 people. When we walked in and I noticed that there was only one front of house staff member working which is crazy for such a huge Venue! We were stood for about 10-15 minutes before being seen to as the waiter was obviously very busy on his own but then were finally seated. We sat for another 10 minutes with the menu and then our drinks order was taken, we waited for our drinks for another 20 minutes and then our food order was taken. So far we had been there for 30 minutes and only had our drinks without our food order taken. when ordered our food, it took about 35 minutes to come and the food was okay but not worth the wait unfortunately. The waiter we had was very friendly and I think he did his best with the situation he was in being the only front of house staff member. I ordered the Mini stuffed Naan which you can either get stuffed with lamb mince or cheese. I asked if I could get it with both lamb mince and cheese but apparently that wasn't possible for some reason?! Not sure why? I said I would pay the difference so I wasn't too impressed with that, I think it isn't very good customer service. I chose to get lamb mince but I was very disappointed with it. The lamb mince wasn't lamb mince it was more like a paté and you get hardly any filling, it didn't have much flavour either, very bland and disappointing. The sauce that comes with it is nice though but quite spicy so it's good if you are into spicy foods. The other dish I ordered was the pulled pork fries which were by far the best dish that we ordered. They were lovely, the pulled pork was gorgeous so I highly recommend that dish! My boyfriend ordered the Chicken dumplings but we weren't overally impressed. I love dumplings, they are one of my favourite foods but they weren't very warm and the sweet chilli sauce didn't go very well with the dish, they weren't overally flavourful either. I think if they had a soy sauce and sesame oil dip with some sesame seeds on the top then it would give the dish a much better flavour Asian flavour. The other dish my boyfriend ordered was the lamb koftas, which came with peppers and onions which were lovely, and a Poppadom which was freshly fried and tasty but again the sweet chilli dip didn't go with the dish and the lamb koftas needed more seasoning because they were a bit bland. Even though the food seasoning and quality wasn't great the presentation was very good! I won't be coming back until this place makes some changes, I think this restaurant needs to hire more front of house staff and make some changes to the menu and food (mostly more seasoning and better quality ingredients) but I think this place could be a great restaurant with the right changes.

The food here is very good. The problem is the slowness of service. Only 6 tables occupied when I was there on the last 2 occasions. 2 bar staff and 3 waiting staff but it took about 10 minutes for 2 bottled beers and a glass of wine to arrive, each time with ordered the wine with a dash of lemonade (I know, horrendous) and each time no lemonade. We went in a Groupon deal and they are missing out on further sales as they did not come back to see if all was ok with the meal or if we needed any further drinks. It's a big place and has the potential to be great but they need to get the service better.

Really sad to write this review as we are never ones to complain, however, we honestly feel that we have never had worse service anywhere before. We waited a long time to be seated, by someone who barely acknowledged our presence. We were seated only with drinks menus and then when the food menu came we were told by the waiter that the 6 for £30 tapas deal (advertised on the website) was not on this evening. Our food came, which was nice, but the server failed to bring any cutlery. We had to wander around to find a member of staff, who we could ask for some. We asked for the bill at the end and noone came for 10 mins so we had to get up and find someone else so that we could pay. Genuinely the worst customer service we've ever experienced. A real shame. We came to eat and enjoy the rugby on the screens, but instead we ended up rushing our food so we could leave sooner and ended up missing 20mins to get home to watch.

We made a table reservation in advance, we queued to get in for 20 minutes! I walked in to see if any staff were around to help us, I can appreciate the bar staff were busy but no one was on the floor to help. When the people in front of us decided to give up on waiting and left, we looked at the front stand where the menu is to see the reservations printed out on full display. Is that normal practice to have customers names and details out on display for anyone walking in to see despite being a complete breach of GDPR? Needless to say, we left.

Had booked but rather chaotic when we arrived and waited for best part of an hour for any drinks or food. Didn't get the table booked. Food OK, but sadly not good enough to be worth the wait. Service was poor, friendly enough, but some staff seemed very new and a bit overwhelmed. Cooks had dishes ready which sat for ages before served. Was after rugby but needed better organised. Will not be first choice in the future.

Loved this place! Booked for 25 people, 40th birthday meal, and everyone loved it! The food is delicious, cocktails were the best we've had! Great atmosphere nice deco felt relaxed. The service was great, Miguel & Josh were very helpful. Special thanks to the floor manager Patricia she is great at her job and made our experience here perfect. Definitely recommend it and would definitely visit again! Thanks

Understaffed but great food and drinks. The venue is way too big for the number of guests they have seated at one time. Very strange feel inside as the decor felt off and parts felt really empty and almost half finished. BUT the food was great and very reasonably priced as we're the drinks. One huge downfall is no system in place to tip unless you have cash? Given how hard true skeleton staff work this is the least the management could do to reward such hard working staff. Most systems let you do this on your pdq machine whilst paying the bill?

One of the worst experiences I've ever had. Waited an hour and a quarter for drinks, over an hour for food that we pre ordered, and there's less than 20 people here. I'd say avoid like the plague, but that's disrespectful to the plague.

Really nice dining environment. Unfortunately on our experience that's where it ended being nice. The curries tasted bland along with the chicken wings. Food in general wasn't impressive at all. which was a shame as the way it is advertised suggests the food is one of the main reasons you would visit.
