Liked how friendly this place was. But sadly had to walk out as zero vegan breakfast options. Shame and a tad surprised for this otherwise reasonably vegan friendly city. Note we were offered kindly some lunch time menu vegan dishes, just didn't quite fancy a cabbage roll at this stage. Strange though, this place has a reasonable choice of vegan friendly dishes lunch times, but not breakfast? Maybe I'm meant to skip this meal as a vegan?? Anyway meat eaters will love this place as felt vibrant and nice folk. Just not for us

Ben was absolutely brilliant, we had the best meal and experience with our family. He was attentive, knew the menu well and generally had an excellent conversation and professional friendly attitude. The food was super yummy. We will certainly come again, thanks so much for a lovely weekend and please do pass our thanks on again to Ben. He’s a credit to the restaurant.

Probably the best restaurant on earth, I love this place almost as much as my girlfriend!!! The staff are always so lovely and create a great relationship with customers, the food is unbelievably good and in perfect portions. Also the crockery they have is low key sexy af 😍

Top-notch, charming service. We had the hunter's stew (bigos), Hungarian potato pancake, and blueberry + hazelnut cheesecake. Portion size was perfect. The food was high quality and very tasty. Will definitely return.

Arrived for lunch and welcomed by Staff who were very friendly. Quite a good menu and staff able to explain various ingredients and were helpful regards food allergies. Highly recommend and hope to return and sample the evening menu soon.

Lovely place, which is surprisingly historic! The staff were very friendly, the polish inspired food was tasty & the atmosphere was buzzing. We found ourselves eating in the “bedroom” (you’ll have to go to find out why). I would recommend you to book if possible, as they get quite busy!

We had a recommendation to come here and we are so glad we did, had one of the best meals we have had for a long time! The staff were lovely and very interesting, my husband had the stew and I had the dumplings, we absolutely loved it and would highly recommend! We will be back when next in York. Lovely quirky building and really interesting to hear the story behind it, great location along the river, very romatic!

Pre-booked a table although it was not busy the night we went. Staff very friendly and willing to chat (I am half Polish). Food choice was good and plentiful. I went for something that I don't make at home and had borscht followed by sausage and chicken skewers (which I couldn't finish). Would definitely recommend it for a traditional taste of Poland.

Overall a fantastic experience, the food was incredible. Had the beef cheeks, A mix of Pierogi and Croquette with Borscht. Nice Honey beer to go with!

Being a polish person, I was very excited to find out that there is a polish restaurant in York upon my short visitation but it shocked me to the bones. Quacking in my boots how much of a DISGRACE this place is for polish culture. Kurwa ja pierdole this was such a sad experience. The sausage in my bigos was mush..not even a real sausage plus the fermented cabbage was literally not seasoned. My boyfriend hax gołąbki and that looked even more depressing. The minced pork was just low quality mush with barely any seasoning. The cabbage in question was barely even there. The tomato sauce? Watered down mistake with no seasoning either. I'm sorry but please avoid if you want actual polish food. This restaurant would go bankrupt in poland. I'm sorry. I don't know how this place is getting good reviews. Maybe I got different food than the other reviews or all who go are uncultured but everything was mush. You could tell they are trying to cut costs extremely without putting care to quality standards. Cheap and sad of them to do. This does not represent Polish food so anyone who tries it as a first time experience of my culture, please take my words seriously. Vodka was nice though.

Fantastic food and lovely drinks. Pros: - pierogi - totally recommend this as a main - turkey schnitzel was divine - generous portions Cons: - meat board was lacking in variety & flavour - bigos only had 3-4 pieces of meat - horseradish in mash was unpleasant -roast potatoes needed more crisp

We spend a lot of time in Poland and were really missing the food so booked a table here as a treat as it's somewhere I've wanted to try for a while. The restaurant has a really rustic feel to it with an eclectic mix of decorations on the wall, scenes of Krakow, Paris, London, little signs, figures and old photos cover inch of the walls. The table runners and crockery are nice too. Service was effective but lacking some charm, the dishes came promptly. We ordered Pierogi (a full and a starter sized portion) and the Croquette & Borscht along with a small £4.95 bottle of still lemonade. All the food was "ok" and the pierogi very delicate and served nicely but I felt the portion size a little miserly for the price paid. Maybe I'm too used to prices in Poland and I appreciate they have no competition in the area but 5 pierogi for £14.50 doesn't seem that generous. The kids portion of the same is 3 for £6.50. The croquette and borscht combo impressed more, the soup had a nice sweetness to it but the mushrooms in the croquette were the stars of the whole meal, very flavourful. Sadly the breaded pancake encasing them was very dry. All the other dishes being served to other diners seemed to be more generously sized so perhaps the pierogi was a poor choice? I won't rush to revisit but I'm glad we gave it a try, if you've never experienced the delights of Polish food it's an introduction but expect the real thing to be more flavourful, come in far more generous portions and be 1/2 the price in a higher end restaurant or major tourist trap.

El personal era atento y servicial, nos permitieron sentarnos un poco antes de la reserva y el ambiente aquí era muy agradable. La comida que se sirve es fusión polaca / europea del este y el menú tiene un montón de platos creativos interesantes. Pero con toda honestidad, en nuestra experiencia nos desengañaron con nuestras comidas. El borscht era soso y el resto de la comida estaba "bien". Un lugar interesante con personal apasionado, pero probablemente no volveremos.

A great Polish restaurant we highly recommend! We loved the atmosphere here with the walls covered in interesting pictures and artifacts. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The food was definitely the star of the show, we haven't tried Polish food before but it was so tasty and great portion sizes. We even got some cakes to takeaway and they were delicious too.

Food superlative. Large, very fresh and perfectly cooked and presented. Courgettes and peppers in the shatsuka al.dente, streaky bacon thick and finger eatable. Quiet on a Thursday morning.

Brilliant place. Lovely colourful decoration inside thats fun to look at, the waiter was really friendly and the food was amazing. We got pierogi for starters and I had beef cheek that was slow cooked to perfection. Finished it so quickly. "Best pork belly I've ever had" -my boyfriend

This is such a cute place. Would strongly recommend DUMPLING FEST, which is like a way better version of Oktoberfest. Five dumplings for £14.50 is a bargain. Left very satisfied and full. My favourite was the spinach pierogi. It may be yours too! Food here is delicious, and the staff are attentive and friendly.

Spectacular lunch. Staff could not have been more accommodating. Had informed them it was out 10th wedding anniversary and they were incredible, freed drinks, perfect service and the food was out of this world. Thanks so much to everyone there.

We've visted The Blue Barbakan twice now and this place never fails. Excellent Polish food all round, but the Bigos (served in a delicious fresh bread bowl) is particularly spectacular. It's very well balanced and full of amazing cuts of kielbasa, pork, and beef with a pleasant acidity from the sauerkraut. They offer an excellent selection of Polish/Eastern European beers too. The restaurant itself is warm and inviting with great, attentive staff (our waiter Benjamin was exceptionally welcoming and polite). Polish food is known for being filling, but do make sure you soldier on for cake at the end! Trust me.

Food and service were both fantastic! We ordered beef perogies and stuffed cabbage rolls. I'm gluten free and they even provided GF bread with the most amazing butter. Chips and sourdough bread were also amazing!

By far the best restaurant in York. Food is excellent, staff are knowledgeable and friendly, atmosphere is relaxing. No matter when I have been, the experience has always been incredible. They're also dog friendly which is a huge bonus. Will always be at the top of my list for a meal out in York.

They catered for a work meal 40-50 people and every dish was hot and delicious, fantastic restaurant

Great restaurant ...never having tried Polish cuisine, we weren't sure what to expect but it was delicious ...I had the potato pancake which was hearty and tasty with a nicely dressed salad and a beef filling that just melted in the mouth ....yum. my wife had the Bigos...again, a super tasty winter warmer. With a pot of tea and a shared cheesecake pudding we paid £19 each...super value we thought. Staff were friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming...recommended if you are down Fossgate on a chill winter's day...or anytime really

Great food, friendly service and a cozy atmosphere are what I found at Blue Barbikan. I definitely recommend it both for a trip with the family or for a romantic date. A place with an interesting history, which I also recommend reading.

Absolutely worth stopping in. They had the most delicious English breakfast we’ve ever had. Everything was superbly presentable and tasted wonderful.

The chocolate top just peeled off it and the filling part just crumbled everywhere, making it impossible to eat. My partners hazelnut and applecake was much nicer. Service was good and friendly.

Lovely as always at the Blue Barbican. The food and drinks are fantastic and our server Benjamin was friendly and sweet! We always get the perogi and they have a great selection of polish vodka and beers.

So good we went twice in one week. Very friendly service, price and food. Any option on the menu is good, but the pierogi, the stew and the beef cheek are particularly recommended.

Go here! The fact that several local foodies have recommended this place to us should be a stamp of approval in and off itself but if that’s not enough to convince you read on. Some of the best Polish food I’ve had in my life, including about a handful of visits to Poland whereof one led me to a 1 star Michelin restaurant. We’ve just left almost rolling out of there because of the amount of food from just starter and main and though I already can’t remember any of the names, the smoked cheese starter was amazing as were the pierogis and the cabbage-wrapped pork with mash and tomato sauce was sooo flavourful.

Guys!! We found Blue Barbican away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The atmosphere was inviting made it a delightful place to dine. They had tempting options for breakfast and lunch. Our servers Kamil and Rae were very attentive and recommended us the best on the menu, we ended up trying mostly everything form breakfast menu. We felt staff who were attentive and genuinely cared about our dining experience made it even better. We enjoyed every moment here. We requested the Chef if they can serve us Perogis from Lunch menu and they served us, Thank you Chef for doing that. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a memorable dining experience.

The uszka were nice and soft, full of flavor, with delicate and slightly puffy dough. The borscht was excellent, rich, and satisfying. The Koźlak beer was awesome—if you’re a fan of Hobgoblin, you’ll definitely enjoy it. For the main course, I chose the gołąbki with pork and rice in a rich tomato sauce. They were served with lightly toasted bread, which was crunchy yet soft, with the perfect texture for scooping up all the delicious sauce. The gołąbki were super soft and fluffy, with a strong hint of garlic and dressed with fresh dill. It truly felt like a taste of home!

Very good food and service at dinner. I would personally recommend getting a side with your perogies as the pierogis alone likely wouldn't be enough, but it's well worth it.

Not an expert on Polish food, but this was a fun experience. Interesting Polish beers, great food and excellent service. Our only regret ... we were to full to try their delicious looking deserts.

Once again The Blue Barbikan did not disappoint , the daily Special Fish was very good my husband had his usual Beef Cheeks we a shared starter of Fishcakes …. We have never managed started & mains ! Our daughter and guest enjoyed shared startes of Perogi to share mains of Stuffed Cabbage & Turkey Schnitzel . House Red & Polish Larger added to the enjoyment ! Thank you & see you again 😁

As polish nationals we must say that it's a perfect destination for those seeking a piece of polish heaven! Incredible service, drinks and food! We can't stress it enough how delicious were the dishes we've had today - golabki (served in a way we've never had before), hungarian pancakes with juicy meat and sour cream, and beautiful today's special dish - cod! Nothing to add, the service exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend it not only to the polish people but also to anyone looking for a tasty meal! The owner Mrs. Anna took amazing care of us and we'll certainly come back again.

Superb restaurant. I ordered rabbit&cranberry dumplings for my main and Scottish mussels for starter. I will definitely come again. Try Polish wine. They have a big selection. Even an orange wine 😀 There more space downstairs. The manager is called Miguel. Very helpful and friendly.

In the past two years, I have visited this place and have exactly the same feelings. Regarding the service, I can't say a single bad word because it is very nice and helpful. The location itself is very well situated, clean, and meets all the standards of a decent restaurant. Alcohol, as we know, is a subjective matter, but serving Perła Miodowa as a premium beer, disregarding the price, is a joke and an insult to all breweries that offer similar beers. Let's focus on the main reason everyone comes here: the food. Polish cuisine is characterized not only by its incredible taste, diversity of products, and simplicity of ingredients (some dishes may require time to prepare) but, most importantly in our tradition, the abundance of dishes. The dishes in this restaurant are "small , tasteless but at least - expensive..." Four pierogi for nearly £8 (tasteless, by the way and seasoning never used in this type of meal)? This is a blatant money grab from customers. It’s also easy to notice that in the entire restaurant (full of tourists), there was no one speaking Polish. Overall, tourists, don't be fooled by the nice location and comments; this is not a typical Polish restaurant focused on quantity and quality. Most importantly, you won't find 100% traditional Polish cuisine here, but rather expensive "infusions." P.S. I really feel sorry for people who have their first opportunity to try Polish cuisine in this restaurant.

Our daughter introduced us to this beautiful restaurant. The atmosphere is as delicious as the food, and the food is of a very high quality. Reading through the menu simply makes your mouth water, and the clear explanations of the dishes were very helpful in deciding what to eat. Staff were polite and knowledgeable, and food was served quickly and presented beautifully. An added bonus was the warm bread and garlic butter that arrived before our meal. Thank you, we'll be back again soon.

My husband took me here as a surprise for my birthday, my first time trying polish food. Our waitress was lovely and went the extra mile to ensure we were happy. The food was delicious, we decided to share 3 mains and loved them all. The deserts looked amazing and homemade, we look forward to trying them next time we visit.

Their coffee, particularly the Flat White, is excellent. The French Toast brings back nostalgic memories, and the Poached Eggs with Spinach is a perfect veggie option. The staff are friendly and helpful, and sitting downstairs provides a cozy atmosphere. Plus, kids eat for free. Highly recommended!

Have been coming to this restaurant for years and it never fails to disappoint. The food is always lovely and great polish vodka and other drink options. We came here this evening for a group birthday get together and had a wonderful evening. Benjamin, our server, was fantastic, prompt service, very friendly and really made for an enjoyable night! Amazing food. Probably the best we have had for a long time. When they say dessert is a generous slice of cake, they mean generous, and it is delicious. Even the bread is a cut above the rest. The service is really friendly as well. Make sure you book to avoid disappointment as they do get busy.

We had the pork belly, chicken scewers and the pasta with chicken from the kids menu, and it was the best food we had, all vacation! Next time I'm in York, We will be back! 11/10
