Blackhouse - The Grill on the Square in Leeds

A few garlic breads to start, 3 burgers, 1 chicken, 1 steak, and 1 drink each. Nice enough food but pricey for what was offered at £180. However, I wasn’t happy with the £20 ‘service charge’. The waitress was very nice and good, but we were there for 1 hour. I will not frequent businesses in future who are putting on service charges. People need to push back, it is getting worse. Vote with your feet.

My wife and I visited The Blackhouse on a Saturday evening at 19:15 in March together with another couple. It was quite busy and "lively" but not so noisy that you couldn't hold a decent conversation. Service was timely, friendly and attentive. The food came in decent portion sizes and was tasty, well presented and prepared. Later a young entertainer played keyboard and sang a range of popular covers. He was pretty good and we enjoyed his performance. Overall a very pleasant evening and we would be happy to recommend The Blackhouse.

I have previously left a 5* review for Blackhouse but I went for lunch today and left feeling quite underwhelmed. Leeds restaurant week has generated a lot of online momentum with offers etc and I received an email stating Blackhouse were offering 2 courses and a cocktail for £25. As I had such a good experience last time I visited I decided this would be my chosen restaurant on my day off as a treat. I was really looking forward to it but the ‘special menu’ turned out to be their standard lunch menu (ordinary cost £18.95) plus a signature cocktail (choice of 2 included) for £25. It’s rare I look at a menu and struggle what to choose from the options being so uninspiring but that’s what happened today. The food itself was nice but the whole experience was a little bit flat and I kinda wish we had chosen somewhere else. I definitely wouldn’t have gone had I seen the menu in advance. Probably better going for a fancy evening meal and sticking with a steak. It must be mentioned the staff were great, the issues I have today fall on the hands of marketing and management / menu creators

Blackhouse is always our go-to place for fantastic meal experience. Words cannot do this place all it deserves. It was our family's first Blackhouse experience & they absolutely loved it. As always, the booking & reception was hassle free & relaxing. Our waitress greeted & introduced herself. The atmosphere is so relaxing & comfortable. Very comfortable surroundings & seating. No feeling of being rushed, or squashed in. The food, as always, was exquisite. I'm not aware of any other grill restaurant that can live up to it's standards. Jamie, our waitress, was first class. Very tentative & professional. It only took a glancing eye contact, across the room, for her to know that we wanted to request something. We all left, feeling extremely happy, satisfied & with happy memories. Thank you again Blackhouse.

Had a lovely evening as always service was good food was lovely only disappointing thing is they've taken mac and cheese, onion rings and mushrooms of menu which is such a shame as they were all lovely only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5

Visited this restaurant in February 2024. Steak was good but nothing exceptional and it was incredibly overpriced for what you got. Service was ok but, in keeping with many places now, a discretionary service charge was applied - personally I really dislike establishments that do this but I appreciate you can request for it to be removed. All in all it was an ok visit but not in a rush to go back.

Visited for a New Year's Eve meal. Service was a little slow, but this was made up for by a free round of drinks. The food was excellent as always and the steaks were cooked perfectly. Always a pleasure.

Having not been to the Blackhouse for some time thought we would give it a try again. Big mistake. When we were seated we were told that only the Xmas menu was available-something that I feel should have been advertised when booking. We were told if we waiting we could have the full menu. My husband wanted a burger. I chose to have the Xmas menu anyway. How disappointing. The mushroom soup looked like dirty water-and was as thin as water and tasteless . The Xmas dinner was quite tasty but only luke warm. The roast potatoes were frozen. The apple pie-so it was called-was awful it did it even look like apple pie. We did speak to the manager who was really nice about the situation but to be fair I’m not sure if we would visit again.

Christmas works evening dinner we all attended here (27) in total. The staff are helpful and complimentary we all got seated -pre drinks. Having our names on the cards with the menu choice we had pre ordered was a help. We had one female staff for all of our needs and to be honest the poor girl seemed flustered at times. I will review per my own experience here. 1 soup arrived but was on the cool side I nearly ask to be reheated but with only myself having a moan I took it on the chin . 2 mains turkey Christmas dinner was ok again slightly better ( I’m aware that serving 26 others at the same time is more than a challenge) again I’d of asked for a re-heat up, but in the group no one else spoke out. 3 Christmas pudding was up to scratch so I’m ok with that. Yes plenty of beer wine flowing before hand and during I maybe out on my own here been a none alcoholic person. Still I’d like to give the place the benefit of the doubt and try here again per just a couple to compare one experience to another. Sorry to give some comments above But maybe a large party may of needed more staff on hand?. We was fully aware other works parties was underway on our visit , that may of restricted our overhaul experience. .

Fab evening! Food and drink was really good and very generous portions of steak! Tom our waiter was so attentive and looked after us all evening. Would definitely return on our next trip to Leeds.

Service from our waitress was excellent but we booked for the Christmas menu only to get there and be told they don't do the Christmas menu on a Saturday! (Not mentioned on their website... from their Christmas munu section you can book and it lets you book on a sat) There was therefore 1 (and not particularly appetising) vegetarian option left - the Christmas menu option had looked really lovely, hence why we booked. We were also offered a ciabatta option with roasted vegetables (again, not what you'd want for a Christmas meal out) After complaining, the manager managed to find something more suitable which was really lovely, but only after complaining. We then had others come to us from another table to say they'd had the same problem and were also really annoyed. For myself, I asked about the gluten free options as it says they have gluten free options available. The waitress was great and said she'd let the manager know and the manager would come and speak to me. All the manager did, was give me a laminated list of all meals with ticks and crosses next to them for various allergens. She then left me to sort out what I might like and then cross reference whether I would be able to eat it. Great service, lovely food once we got it, but not good on their communication and options available

Me and my partner have been to blackhouse many of times and never been so disappointed. When arriving we was given the menu and decided what we wanted. 5 minutes after we had already decided, the waiter came over and listed about 8 things that they didn’t have so we’re unable to serve which meant we had to pick something different. We both ordered the filet steak and mash and the fillet came burnt like charcoal and the mash was full of clumps and had a odd texture. The fillets were extremely small considering the price and expectations. Then £10 service charge on the bill which isn’t deserved.

Just been for lunch at Blackhouse. We were seated quickly and the service was excellent. Emily was our allocated waitress and she was so helpful and welcoming. The food was exceptional and Emily was great. Will definitely be returning

We used to come here and splash out on a great meal worth every penny. Last night it wasn't particularly busy but it took an hour for food to come out and it was fairly average, nothing special. So instead of buying more drinks and dessert we paid up and left. The menu change isn't great and the food just wasn't as nice as usual. Shame, this won't be our go-to any more.

Really nice food, had the chateaubriand and lobster and both were divine. Portions were relatively small, however, this didn't concerns us too much due to the tastiness. Also lovely service from Elizabeth, very polite and professional.

I have been many times to the Black House in Leeds and this has always been my favourite place. The steaks are the best and live music most nights. On this occasion, the food was very good, but staff slow. We were not told that the table was only booked for 2 hours and because the staff was slow to serve food, we felt they were not happy when we ordered the sticky toffee pudding. Hannah who served us was very friendly though, but I was not impressed with the restaurant manager. He was very rude and did not make any effort to interact with customers. He abruptly put the bill on our table and told us to pay because there was a queue outside. I did not see any one waiting outside when we went home. I will try again in a few months, hopefully the restaurant manager will have improved his customer skills.

We visited on Saturday to meet up with friends. 2 of our party are vegan (yes we knew it was a steakhouse) As there were no vegan options, the amazing team created an incredible bespoke 5 course tasting menu for us and it was incredible. The food was absolutely delicious as were the cocktails. They really went above and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing staff. Would highly reccomend for delicious food, great drinks and service.

We reserved a table online in advance however on arrival we were still shown to the downstairs area which had no heating and plastic tables and chairs, when we questioned why we were sat down there we were told that other people had called and specifically requested heaters but surely this should be first come first served basis and priority given to those who will be eating? We were shown to a dirty table (stained paper table cloth) and we weren’t asked if we wanted any drinks or anything, so not a great start.We then ordered drinks about 10 minutes later but waited again before we could order food. We ordered cheesy garlic bread and Camembert to start and planned on sharing them both however the cheesy garlic bread arrived and they said they had forgotten about the Camembert. She said she would quickly go grab it from the kitchen but it arrived 15 minutes after we had finished the garlic bread. The garlic bread wasn’t overly impressive but the camembert was very nice.Our mains arrived a while later and we were both quite disappointed, my boyfriend paid £35 for his ribeye (because they sold out of the usual one on the menu) which was really thin/flat and I ordered the £30 fillet. I requested it medium well because I am pregnant but it came closer to rare and it was tiny! The chips were really salty so I had to leave mine.The peppercorn sauce is really nice and the fruit bomb mocktail I had was also great, they, along with the camembert, were definitely the highlights of the meal.I asked for the bill and explained we had £60 vouchers which we were bought as Christmas presents but the waiter came back with the bill and had forgotten about them. We then spent another 10 minutes waiting for a new bill so we could pay and get out of the freezing cold but the vouchers wouldn't work. They kindly took photos of them so they could knock it off the bill and keep the reference for their records to process the voucher later when the system worked. We were glad as we really wouldn’t have paid full price for this experience.I definitely wouldn’t return until they are open for indoor dining and have found their feet again. I appreciate our visit was 14/04 so only the 3rd night they could open but it really was poor.There was another couple who massively kicked off behind us over the cold seating for diners, they ended up shouting and just leaving which was another thing to spoil the evenings atmosphere.

We visited this week and booked a terrace table , we were looking forward to a luxury steak & cocktails date day however we were seated under a marquee covered on bird poo with no outdoor heating. It was very cold and the menu was very limited. We asked if a table became available under the heaters if we could move there. We were told that as soon as someone left we would be moved up to the nicer and warmer tables. A table became free, and we were not moved and other guests were given this table.Overall a disappointing experience which was very expensive for what we got.

Enjoyed a pre lockdown meal yesterday. Starters were blackened fish tacos, calamari & garlic bread with cheese to start - all very good. Mains were a shared Tomohawk and fillet, again all excellent.Only thing was I couldn’t work out the bill...it had £18.75 service charge so I didn’t add a gratuity into the card machine, however there was a summary below itemising food and drink which added up to the total so I don’t know if the service charge had been added ? Apologies if not, I will ask next time and add (felt awful if it wasn’t on there)

Booked a table and arrived at 7pm to be shown to a lovely booth in the corner. Our wonderful waitress, Libby, ran through some of the items not available and took our order of pate to start, which was very tasty, and main courses of Fillet steak and Chicken Fajitas. Lots of meat and great accompaniments. A glass of Pinot Noir to round off a great meal as well as fantastic friendly service from Libby meant we had a lovely evening. We came here yesterday for Sunday lunch and we were really surprised by the quick service.We skipped starters are there wasn’t anything on the menu that we fancied, and we are glad we did as we were so full.We both ordered the roast beef, served pink and it was delicious. It came with 3 roast potatoes, 1 Yorkshire pudding, half a carrot, a small Cumberland stuffing, gravy and a side dish of mixed greens. The menu says it’s “boozy” gravy but we couldn’t really taste the red wine. We also had to order extra as you don’t get much on the plate.If we’re being really picky it would have been nice to get a full carrot instead of just half.Overall, it was a lovely Sunday roast and very tasty.

ALAN ALAN ALAN!!! Alan served us tonight, we had everything we needed. He showed us the wine menu and described to us what they had in stock and what would be catered to our needs. He was very well attentive, and was always there whenever we needed anything. 10/10 for Alan!!!!

We went for dinner last night on what was meant to be our wedding day. Blackhouse were amazing, we hadn’t said anything about the occasion so we know the service we received was the same as other and it was superb. Phoebe was great at waiting on us and the food was first class.

We visited Blackhouse yesterday and what can we say, well organised, great service and the food was all amazing. Our waitress was really lovely and very attentive. I much prefer the total table service and everyone having to be seated. We will definitely be back, even better if they get the piano player back....

Came here for tea with my Grandmother as a treat, and boy was it worth it! Phoebe was an excellent waitress, recommended the sirloin steak, it was the best steak I have ever had. My grandma had the fish and chips as she is not a massive fan of steak, however she thought it was fantastic, the chips were perfect. The cookies and cream cheesecake dessert was also delicious. Overall, absolutely outstanding, couldn’t recommend a better place for steak in Leeds.

Pasamos una agradable velada en este restaurante. Había un gran ambiente y era agradable y cálido. La camarera era muy dulce y amable y la comida era excelente. Mi marido tenía bistec chuletón y yo tenía fajitas de bistec. Ambos estaban deliciosos. Definitivamente regresaríamos.

Esta fue nuestra primera vez en Black House y no nos decepcionó. Habíamos leído críticas anteriores comparándolo con un asador de Toby, pero no puedo entender por qué, ya que es uno de los mejores restaurantes en los que he estado. James, nuestro servidor, estaba totalmente en el punto y estaba bien informado con el menú. Soy alérgico a las nueces, pero dos miembros del personal me aseguraron que me cuidarían. El bistec estaba perfectamente preparado y el ambiente permitía una comida privada en la que no te sentías aislado. Muchas gracias al equipo por una noche increíble, pero especialmente a James. James recomendó Below Stairs como un bar de cócteles después de la cena, que también fue increíble. 5 estrellas hasta el final.

Hemos comido en este restaurante muchas veces en pareja y también con equipos de trabajo que llevan hasta 15 personas y gastan una cantidad considerable a lo largo de los años. En primer lugar, estábamos emocionados de regresar después de la reapertura y escuchar que ha habido una renovación. Tuvimos que preguntarle a un miembro del personal qué se había hecho con respecto a la remodelación ya que no se veía nada, la respuesta fue que el piso había sido lijado y barnizado, lo que no estoy seguro de que constituya una remodelación. El menú se ha reducido y es bastante limitado en comparación con lo que solía ser, lo que indica que ahora hay menos opciones que esperaría que aseguraran que todas las opciones estuvieran disponibles. Cuando se trataba de ordenar, opté por el plato anunciado de chuletas de cordero que en el momento de ordenar me dijeron que lamentaban no tener ninguna, lo cual a la 1:30 pm la hora del almuerzo del domingo era difícil de creer.Terminé con el almuerzo del domingo, que no fue nada especial, con un aspecto más bien debajo de las papas asadas, verduras de aspecto triste y lo que creo que era una porción de relleno, pero era bastante irreconocible y directamente de un paquete congelado. La comida de mi esposa fue el filete, que estaba bastante exagerado y lleno de cartílago y terminó sirviéndole a nuestros perros.Las patatas fritas con las que venían tenían un fuerte sabor al aceite en el que estaban cocidas y parecían bastante baratas y no como solían ser. El punto que realmente agrió la comida fue cuando una pareja vino a sentarse en la mesa de al lado con un bebé pequeño para el que instalaron un teclado I y procedieron a poner el volumen al máximo. Al personal no le importó y cuando dijimos que era un poco ruidoso para la pareja, solo recibimos insultos y abusos que al personal nuevamente no le importó ni hizo nada.Si hubiera una opción para dar una calificación menos que terrible, lo haría, a juzgar por otras críticas negativas del establecimiento, no espero una respuesta, ya que parece que no les importa qué críticas reciben.En otra nota, tampoco se mantienen en línea con las pautas de distanciamiento social, en particular las cabinas donde estábamos sentados, teníamos otros comensales directamente detrás de nosotros sin pantallas en el medio, la distancia a los otros comensales era de menos de 30 cementers.

Emocionados de volver a Blackhouse, reservamos nuestra mesa el lunes 28 de septiembre. Cuando llegamos a nuestra reserva a las 19:45, nos hicieron sentir incómodos con comentarios sobre cómo estamos de hecho la reserva en el restaurante. No queríamos que esto eclipsara nuestra velada. Las bebidas estaban bien. La comida fue una decepción ya que cada bistec estaba cocido. Luego llegaron a las 20:30 p.m. y mientras comíamos, nos dijeron que estaban tomando los últimos pedidos ya que el restaurante deja de servir a las 9 p.m. Al hacer la reserva, esto no se nos reveló, ya que me atrevería a decir que habríamos reservado. en otro lugar, según las nuevas directrices del gobierno, nos permite estar en el restaurante hasta las 10 de la noche. Todos trabajamos en la industria de la hospitalidad, de ahí que el lunes por la noche decidimos salir. En general, fue una noche decepcionante. Mac and Cheese estaba bien, sin embargo.

He visitado Blackhouse innumerables veces y siempre disfruté de mi experiencia y siempre regresaré.El restaurante es hermoso y cuando el pianista toca, especialmente, el ambiente es increíble.La comida siempre ha sido de gran calidad y nunca he dejado de disfrutar de una comida.Lo que me falla es el servicio, a menudo es lento y las cosas se olvidan o se mezclan.Reconozco que es un restaurante muy popular y concurrido, pero ha sucedido en múltiples ocasiones (al menos 5) y comienza a afectar tu opinión sobre el restaurante.A menudo siento que no tienen suficiente personal y sé que a veces no se puede evitar.Espero que esto se pueda resolver pronto y que los estándares no se desvíen, ya que soy cliente desde hace años y me encanta comer aquí.

Myself and my partner both ordered the Irish Fillet Steak, which was cooked to perfection. We received great service from Pola whilst there, and she is a credit to the restaurant. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent too.

We chose to celebrate one of our friends birthdays - and were so pleased we did! From stepping in to walking out all was goodThe atmosphere was fantastic - really buzzy and lively with the added bonus of a Pianist singing all night The food was tasty and well presented. From the starter to the main.Service was good There were 8 of us - the table was not the best as it is obviously meant for more people so there was part of it empty - it sounds a bit pernickety but it just looked and felt odd .It’s on the expensive side - with the bill coming out at £120 for 2.... Will definitely come back - with another couple rather than a bigger group....

The service was excellent, thanks to the waitress Tamara. The steak sauces were delicious (peppercorn and Bearnaise) the sides of creamed cabbage, onion rings, mac & cheese and chips was really good. The oysters...not the best. The steak...long bone tomahawk medium rare and the chateaubriand medium was absolutely tasteless and chewy. £121 for meat that was only edible by covering with the for mentioned sauces....not good at all

Absolutely gorgeous food at a fairly reasonable price. Service was amazing and staff couldn’t do enough for us, especially James who was our waiter for the evening. James was extremely attentive, friendly and helpful! We wouldn’t hesitate to come back after our first time dining here and I will also be recommending Blackhouse to anyone who is wanting great food accompanied by great service.

As I visit Leeds regularly for business I like to try out as many restaurants as possible. One evening I had a hankering for steak and as this restaurant was opposite my hotel I popped in on the off chance I could get a table. The staff were very pleasant and despite not having a reservation found me a spot, as the restaurant seemed very popular despite it being a midweek evening. I opted for the calamari to start, which was quite a sizeable portion and pretty tasty. The batter was light and the squid was well cooked. For the main I went for the "blackhouse selected" ribeye and an onion pudding. At first the steak seemed well cooked and tasty, although unfortunately the second half of the steak may have been cooked at a higher heat as it was cooked more towards medium / medium-well. By the point I'd discovered it I had already told them it was fine and eaten enough of the meal to not want to send it back or complain. The onion pudding was an interesting dish, although probably not something I'd have again as it was quite large and other sides would be nicer. The chips were tasty, although a bit too heavily salted for me. Overall, it was a good meal, but a few errors in cooking and personal choices means that I've had better meals out.

Went her because I had a 50% off voucher through work. Wont lie if I didn't have this then I probably wouldn't have gone. My brother was down from London and thoguht I'd take him, he's quite a food snob after working in the food industry for a few years and being a proffesional athlete as well.Anyway we went, the setting was lovely, the place had a great vibe about it, we was seated promtly and asked if we was happy with it etc which I like.Then the waiter came and my brother started to ask the questions. I usually hide my face in the menu at this point - however our waiter was fantastic, managed to answer all the questions about the resting time, the cooking temperatures, how the prep for a rare steak etc. He then had his own reccomendations of the cut etc. Hoenstly the knowledge and training they must give is great and something they need to keep up with because we was both shocked.Food came and we was already taken in by the smell, was great, the cooking on the meat was PERFECT. I and I mean perfect.We didn't speak for 20 minutes which is always a good sign - for more reason than one!Honestly we can't reccomend this place enough. I'd pay full price next time too willingly!!

As me and my boyfriend are both steak lovers I decided to give this a go after a recommendation from a friend. It was so lovely to see such a busy restaurant that was so well run by the host making sure everybody was seated promptly. For starters we had the pulled beef bonbons and cheesy garlic bread, both amazing and the garlic bread tasted so fresh! For mains we both had fillet steak which was cooked to perfection, as someone who’s very very fussy with fat on meat I was so impressed to find that even I couldn’t find any fat and it’s the first time in my life I’ve been able to eat a whole steak! We also indulged in a Mac n cheese side each and OMG am I glad we did, AMAZING, I left the tiniest bit and I’m still thinking about it now! Just want to say Thankyou for what was a very memorable night, from the waiter, to the food, to the cocktails. Couldn’t recommend enough.

Restaurant was packed to bursting and very noisy (Saturday evening), but snervice wasn't bad at all. We were a party of 6, and 5 were disappointed in the meal. The food was OK,but nothing outstanding. We ordered different items from the menu,and everyone thought their meal was overpriced for the quality of food served. Been before a couple of times, but won't rush back.

Good as always, table on time, good service, good food always in good standard! Bit expensive. Was good to see you again folks.

Firstly let me say, we had two steaks plus sides and they were cooked to perfection and the sides were beautifully done.

Have wanted to try this restaurant on our last few visits to Leeds and tonight we finally got to try it, and happy to say it did not disappoint. My hubby and I opted to share the tomahawk steak (absolutely delicious) that came with a lot of extras. They had run out of most of the extras but happily replaced them with other side dishes from the menu. We shared a onion hummus starter that was a huge portion and came with a great selection of crudités and crisp breads. Service by the lovely Savannah was great. There was a good buzzing atmosphere in the restaurant and good live music. Very good value for money. Would definitely be up for another visit next time we’re in Leeds.

Came for an anniversary meal. We have been a few times in the past and it never lets us down. Steaks are amazing and the side dishes are to die for! I'd recommend the Mac and cheese and the garlic mushrooms. Service was efficient, quick and attentive. Think our servers name was Holly? It was a busy Sunday evening and the atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely. Thank you for an amazing meal!

Try the cauliflower cheese soufflé with red cabbage. Wow, don’t see that on the menu often, it was delicious

Visited with friends and previously had had the best steak and experience in a long time, unfortunately this time things really didn't live up to expectations.
