Shame the bar selection on pumps wasn't great, one beer , one cider and one larger. The beer garden could do with a clean and a fresh plants. We had to thread carefully in the garden as in several places there was dog muck. It could be a great place with a little TLC

Food took an hour and wrong order brought to us. There's a children's menu but it's not a place set up for families - no child friendly cutlery, cups etc. Not very welcoming, we felt like this was a locals only pub and we were very disappointed

Spent a week in the nearby caravan park and came in for food.Had three excellent meals, mine gluten free and Lauren adapted dishes to cater. Dog friendly, always had a treat for the dog, (thanks nana Wendy) and they happily made her a cup of tea. Extremely friendly locals, one guided us on the local buses, thanks Wayne. We left feeling part of the community. Hope to return soon.

Disappointing meal. Both had lamb shank but after a long wait of over an hour in an empty restaurant, we were disappointed that the food was so tasteless and clearly frozen / reheated in the microwave. Wasn’t helped by the bar staff chatting endlessly behind the bar whilst we sat in a room with 3 tables that all needed clearing. Got fed up with the flies attacking us. One table with dirty plates that was empty when we arrived at 7.30pm was finally cleared at 9pm. We did say when it came to paying that it hadn’t been good but the staff just said sorry and took the payment. They weren’t interested in finding out what had gone wrong. No one asked us if the meal was okay whilst we were eating. Awful place wouldn’t recommend it at all.

We have been to this pub on many many occasions and always had fantastic service with fantastic real ales. The staff are so helpful and friendly and it is always a place we love to go to when we are caravanning in the area at several different caravan sites such as South Carolina farm and red house estate. We went here on the 14th of May 2022 at 3 pm, however sadly the pub was closed which was a big shame. There was no notice on either the back door or the front door to tell us of the opening times to enable us to come back a little bit later therefore sadly we had to choose another pub. We will definitely come here again if they are still open.

it changes hands quite a lot so this review might not be accurate in 1-2 years or so but we had food and it was just okay. not bad by any means but for the price, i don't think it was worth it. that being said, its a local pub so they probably have the prices that high to sustain themselves so i dont blame them. nice friendly staff and a comforting atmosphere though!

Called into this lovely pub after visiting a couple of villages looking for somewhere to eat. The landlord and staff were very friendly, as were the locals who welcomed us with local conversation and history. Nice pint of keg ale and a couple of tasty meals at a decent value. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at the Black Horse.

The food was really great, the portion sizes are generous for the Sunday lunches we ordered, they happily accommodated our fussy eaters too despite the kids menu being off while lunch was served, which saved us a huge headache. The play area was great, service was excellent, I ordered a drink for our youngest and went to the loo whilst my order was sorted, when I returned they'd already taken it out to him at the top of the beer garden. Lots of kids (mostly ours) played football in the small goal, which again was great as it kept them entertained for an hour. The only remotely negative bit was our daughter's giant pink tennis ball went missing, which meant I had to walk half a mile with a sulking 9yr old on my shoulders...

Lovely friendly village pub. Went for Sunday lunch with family. Dining area was comfortable and bright. For Sunday lunch there was a choice of three meats. We all chose beef. The meals appeared freshly cooked and were served on hot plates. A generous portion of meat served with a large homemade Yorkshire pudding. Leeks and both mashed and roast potatoes served on the plate with a side order of gravey and separate dish of red cabbage, carrot and swede mash and broccoli. More than enough to go round a table of 5. Friendly and attentive staff. Only our daughter had room for dessert - ice cream sundae which looked divine. I forgot to take a photo of our main course, we were too eager to tuck in! Highly recommended and will visit again.

The bar maid told us we could have takeaway, and gave us a menu. We said we want to eat in,that was OK. She ordered 2 pizzas that we wanted. Took a while to arrive. Seven of us were spending a week flying at the Yorkshire Gliding Club, Sutton Bank and on a rainy morning we visited the Gavel for Breakfast on a Club Member’s recommendation. If you’re looking for a full English breakfast this is definitely the place to go. Good quality nicely cooked breakfast, good portions,(you would have to be ravenous to go for the large), excellent value for money, good service and friendly staff. Look forward to going to try the lunch on our next visit.
