We went for a Sunday roast to celebrate my birthday never having been here before. When we got out the car there was a nasty sewage like smell and saw the chefs smoking outside the kitchen. Walking in, there was a nice greeting from the bar staff. We ordered drinks and went into the garden but the smell was out there and the furniture is really old and tired and not very inviting so we opted to eat inside. We ordered two roasts and a fish and chips for our son. The roast wasn’t cheap at nearly £22 each and it was a good size but it was inedible. The meat was so chewy and the potatoes were really hard. I did speak to the bar staff and they swapped the beef for lamb but that was just as bad so I left most of it. My son loved the chips but the fish wasn’t nice so he didn’t eat it, it was all soft and runny like it had been frozen. We cut our losses and went to get dessert elsewhere. The loos are also really tired and outdated. It feels like it needs a lot of love and maybe a reality check on the pricing.

Yet another fabulous lunch here! Between the 4 of us we had the brie, hazelnut & mushroom Wellington, 2 pies of the day & a fish platter followed by dessert. We arrived to a roaring log fire on a cold Spring day. A warm, friendly welcome was given. We enjoyed a wonderful 2 course lunch. I had beer battered Halloumi on a fantastic salad which was bursting with flavour with every mouthful plus some sweet potato fries. This was followed by banoffee cheesecake. My friend had a homemade chicken & leek pie, also with sweet potato fries followed by sticky toffee pudding which he said was the lightest & tastiest he had ever had! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The only negative was that the sweet potato fries were an extra £2.75 per portion for not having the standard chips which I thought was a bit cheeky really. Apart from this, we really enjoyed our visit & will be back soon!

Lovely oldie pub/restaurant, with a wood fire. Clean loos, secure parking with operating security cams. Professional waiting staff. Nice roast beef meals enjoyed by us both. The apple and blackberry crumble was perfect for me as it wasn't too sweet, like some can be. Well worth the visit. Many thanks.

I had a discussion recently with a food critic. We were trying to identify a formula that leads to a great restaurant or pub. We came to agreement that it wasn’t just one thing (the food, the atmosphere, the service), but a combination of these. Yet always in the context of people who care for the customer, and want their guests to have a top time. I was lucky enough to eat at “The Blackhorse” pub, Nuthurst last week, and it served to prove the point. The staff were amazingly helpful, friendly informed and always anticipating what you may need. The food superb, fresh, varied, seasonal and very reasonably priced (roast pheasant, venison & beef on a Sunday lunch menu). Add to this a great authentic pub environment, and you have what I think is one of the best country pubs I’ve been to. My daughter took her one hundred year grandad to lunch here, and he reminded us that he walked past “The Black Horse” on his way to school every day some ninety five years ago !!)

I have enjoyed a quiet beer here many times over the last 40 years. Today we were refused service supposedly because all the tables were reserved despite most of them being empty. I assume the rudeness of the staff was more to do with our accents not being a fit for the local character of the pub.

Lovely looking country pub. Entered and informed by the gentleman serving that the Kitchen had finished, this was at 13.45, sign showed 14.00. No I'll try to accomodate you if you choose something simple. Can only assume this was the owner, because if he was a memeber of staff you need to get rid of him. Customer sevice was pathetic. From other reviews a great experience has been had, you must have been served by someone else. From meals we could see which were just being served to customers, they looked very inviting. Great food, terrible attitude from male staff

Following recommendations on Trip Advisor I booked a table for our group of 4 for lunch following a visit to Leonardslee. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We received a warm welcome and settled at a table outside the pub. The pub is in a lovely spot in the countryside. The menu was extensive with some fabulous specials including venison and sea bass which were excellent as well as delicious pies. The service from the young lady was excellent - very friendly and super efficient. I wish this lovely pub was more local for us. If we are in the area again we will definitely return!

As a family we eat at a local pub once a month, sometimes more. The pub we've used countless times in Warnham today lost our custom. They've always taken far more care of their conversations than their customers and we've had enough. The Black Horse is simply brilliant in comparison. Parking, views, food, service, timing, every kindness and concern for accessibility and disability given. Quite frankly the best. Ignore the negative reviews, not a shred of truth in them we think. 🙏 Loved our time today, we'll be back. Lovely to be looked after like one of the family, by a family run business

Lovely quaint old pub. Food was excellent and the female member of staff who was the only one serving in the pub was excellent. Despite been busy working on her own, she was very attentive and polite to everyone. My only negative comment is the toilets badly need a makeover. I felt I was going back in time to the 70'S at my Grandmother's house when I entered the Ladies toilet. Also there was a massive cobweb by the window in the Ladies toilet that looked liked it has been there for a very long time.

The other two dishes, a burger and mussels were ok but nothing special. The chocolate brownie was just a chocolate cake overheated in a microwave to the point of being hard in places. Fruit crumbles were lacking sugar. Car parking is an issue. We sat in the back garden for the very first time (we've been countless times, just never ventured out there) and it was delightful. The babbling stream, the sunshine and the ambience out there was idyllic and exactly needed for a relaxing lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We have just eaten at this lovely pub, we chose to sit in the quiet characteristic garden which is so much better than most other pub gardens, there's a stream running through gently trickling over a small fall and tree's all around. The food was excellent the service from Helen and Emily was friendly and helpful. I had steak and ale suet pudding with mash and vegetables with rich gravy, absolutely delicious. My partner had Sussex lamb which was also very good. The vanilla panacotta and the banoffee pie puddings were a real treat. I also recommend a pint of Hophead, great pale ale. Hi Rob,I’m writing this review as requested to do so by you. I have to say this is the first time a landlord has made me cry. The way that you spoke to me, my partner and my Nan is shocking to say the least. At lunch time today, my partner politely brought in two sticky toffee puddings with clear green mould on them. The server was shocked and said she would take them into the kitchen. The same server then came back to say and strongly insinuating that we were lying, that no mould had been found? Which is weird because she had acknowledged it by the bar and then somehow missed it in the kitchen. What really shocked me the most was the attitude we were given when she returned to the table, saying no mould had been found, even though there was mould. The irony is, is that if we hadn’t been met with such disgraceful customer service, there really wouldn’t have been an issue. A simple apology and acknowledgement that we did find something wrong with our pudding would have been suffice. I’ve had many lovely visits to the Black Horse and have never had an issue before. I’m confused as to what you think I would have achieved by lying about green mould? All it left me was without a pudding! What also shocked us even further was the rudeness of her muttering something to her colleague as she headed back in to the pub, which I later explained to her seemed very rude. If you’re unhappy with customers, at least wait until you’re out of sight to moan about us!We were then more than happy to pay our bill, minus the two mouldy (yes the green stuff is mould) puddings. Then the pièce de rèsistance was meeting your delightful self, whom thought it was professional to cause a scene in front of your customers. We tried discussing the situation with you, but sadly you were too aggressive and irate that l was truly shaken by your demeanour. My partner, after your outburst with regarding tearing up the bill and not having to pay, tried to pay for what we had eaten in the bar after. We are good people who do not like to be accused of lying and to be spoken to like a piece of s**t on your shoe has really upset me.I think we’d both be pleased to know that you have lost a customer at the black horse. I think I’m more disappointed about that than you. Because if it hadn’t have been for your outrageously aggressive temper, I would have returned.

Was a good pub, but today some girl (owner?) had a silly strop, shouted from afar as we were paying the bill, about my earlier enquiry to the waitress, into when they might stock the Nuthurst Cider again (it had been absent for my last couple of visits). No idea what her evident beef with the Nuthurst Orchard is, but her churlish outburst does likely identify on whose side the fault might lie.Cider produced in its own village was the pub's USP. And I don't eat out to be screeched at by some nutter I don't know, over something I have nothing to do with and no knowledge of.Oh well, off to a pub with a more sensible grasp of business/customer service it is for me in future. No shortage of them.

It has a lovely big fire place, a garden, nice selection of beers and the staff are so polite and friendly - it really makes a difference to your experience, none of this locals only nonsense. It was a bit quiet when we arrived at 5pm one Saturday probably because the Kitchen opens at 6pm and most diners arrived at 7pm. Our courteous smile to the female chef as we approached the pub and noticed her leaning against the front wall, smoking, was met with a scowl, which wasn’t the ideal greeting. However, once inside, the welcome was warm from the very friendly bar staff, so all was well. On walking past the kitchen, the same lady chef was heard loudly bemoaning a request for vegan food (thankfully, not our order). Still, our food was very tasty and the beer served cold. The waiting staff were busy milling around, friendly, smiling and efficient. Generally making everyone feel welcome. We assumed, wrongly, that the pub would offer the 50% ‘eat out, to help out’ discount that pretty much every eating establishment in the nation is currently offering. My own fault entirely for not checking when booking, but I’m totally lost as to why the proprietors wouldn’t want to pass that benefit on to their guests, when it costs the business nothing and presumably would increase custom. Left with mixed feelings a parting scowl from the same chef, who this time was outside the back of the pub, smoking again, even though we had just been denied dessert at 20:15, because the kitchen was closed.

The Landlord, Rob and his family and staff, are all adapting to the impact and have started a 'takaway or delivery' menu.My wife and I (Susie and John) have just availed ourselves of their Sunday Lunch and all I can say it that it was so brilliant that even after this Corona Virus problem has ended, I hope that the Black Horse will have survived enough to keep the 'takeaway service concept' as a regular part of their business. The food was brilliant, as ever. Today it was the Sunday roast courtesy of chef Graham, who couldn't be more responsive to quality. What I'm surprised is not more well known is the pub should be a haven for serious ghost aficionados who are noted for quaffing large volumes of ale to lubricate paranormal investigations. The village, and particularly the Black Horse, is alive with knockings, nudges and spookiness. Over Graham's delicious Eton Mess I quizzed a local on the famed 'Black Hound of Nuthurst' and sliding beer glasses on the 'haunted table'; in that marvelous Sussex drawl he would only offer "ooh, you don't want be believin' in things like that, sor". The Black Horse Inn is rightly on the good pub food trail, but you could well get a fascinating side dish of historic apparitions with your appetizing ham baguette.

Well where to begin? The moment you walk into The Black Horse you just want to take in the ambience of the surroundings. A chilly winters evening, but so much atmosphere, a warm fire and an even warmer welcome. Good beer choice, we were shown to the table we had reserved and in some respects this room was even better than the first; wooden floors, uneven beams, even an insight into the fabric of the walls of this 17th century pub are a feature behind a glass frame. The menu was superb - a great range of options, size of meal and price to select from. The staff and Landlord were super friendly. Between the three of us we had Sussex Cod, Pork Belly and Gammon steak and we each independently said each dish could not have been better. Generous portions, excellent value, no room for dessert (shame!) - just one issue for us, the fact we can't make this our new local as we live 150 miles away! Thanks so much for a very memorable evening.

Visited with friends this weekend. Were looking for a traditional oldy worldy pub with an open fire and was exactly what we were looking for. Traditional old pub in a lovely setting with a little stream running outside of the back. Low beams and cosy with a roaring fire. Attentive and friendly staff with a great large menu. The food was extremely good. I had the pie of the day, venison and bacon and my friends had the fish and chips and ham and eggs. All good sized portions and really delicious, none left at the end!

This place has an amazing local menu. The food is well portioned and served in a timely manner. We were not rushed and the girls waited on the tables excellently. At least on was 'new' but you wouldn't know it from the professional and friendly attitude. A mistake on serving was quickly rectified and all four of us thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We will certainly return. One small point, the sat nav will take you to the property immediately opposite, so just look for the pub! It is an old building and exudes charm. In the words of I.J., a penitent person may enter freely!

A good pub with lovely, quaint ambience and decent food. We went once while in the area and thought it worth a second visit in the week we were there. I had crab (twice, it was that good) and my partner had rabbit pie and fish. The house wine was good. It was busy on Saturday (need to book) but not mid week (almost empty). All reasonable value for money.

Incredible service in an excellent rustic original pub. Izzy could have not been more helpful with her colleague in explaining the menu and ales. We had not been to this pub for many years and cannot believe why we did not come back sooner. Food was great traditional English fare with locally sourced specials. The Evening flew past in a wonderful dream.

Good place to meet and have a meal--staff were very friendly--we sat outside as it was a glorious evening--the menu is standard pub fare which was welcome after some not so good "gastro" experiences.Good value.

We visited with friends and choose a different venue for each get together. What a find this is. A lovely warm welcome and a great pub with authentic beams and a great country feel. So much choice for all courses. We chose the butchers sausages and mash, steak and ale suet pudding and the pie of the day, a very tasty chicken leek and gammon. Hubby said the sausages were great, the suet pudding was very full with tender chunks of meat and super gravy and our chicken pies were amazing. Full to bursting and with such a thin melting pastry. We all found room for dessert, the sticky toffee pudding was first class, the banoffee pie amazing and the melon creme brulee was the tops. We had an amazing meal and would thoroughly recommend this pub to anyone who wants a home made tasty well priced lunch to visit.

We had a wonderful evening reminiscing of when we were regulars here 35+ years ago. The bitter wine, and lager was chilled and excellent. We had the crab and the steak and suet dishes, which were excellent as was the banofi pie.

We booked for dinner and it turned out to be a quiz night. We had a nice meal, I had the steak & kidney pudding which was nice but a little dry inside. My wife had venison which was nice. We decided to stay for the quiz which everyone seemed to enjoy but found the subjects were quite dated, just an excuse for not doing well...

Well off the main road and beautifully quiet this very old and characterful pub serves a cracking pint of beer with good choice. Pubby menu well above standard with great choice. Baguette is really good.

Had several meals here during a recent stay in nearby Maplehurst. Can’t fault anything about this pub. Great atmosphere, very friendly, helpful staff, excellent food, good beer - what more could you ask? I only wish we had a pub half as good near where we live!

Great old pub - lots of character (‘would be even better without the ubiquitous ‘heritage’ paint) and very nice staff. The lunch, though, was average and we waited over 20 minutes despite the fact that there weren’t many people in the pub. We’d go again for a drink but not to eat.

Great old fashioned country setting. The pub is quaint and fits it's setting. Small spaces, lots of wood, a fire. Great. We had a disabled person with us and there are loads of steps (not big ones but lots) and general changes of height. My companions loved their food but I went for the Ploughman's which comes with skinny chips. Chips were great but the bread was really tough to eat. I had a very sharp knife so could cut it into bite size chunks. There was no way I could have just picked it up and bitten into it.

Archetypal country pub, rustic, log fire on February evening, low beams, some VERY low but there is padding to lessen the impact for the unwary. The tables in the restaurant area are of necessity a bit close together, not too much space, but there are other bar areas as an alternative.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.

Went to the Crown Inn for a family meal. It was Saturday evening but not too busy. All five of us enjoyed our food, especially three of us that had the Sussex Smokie. The other dishes, as well as the starters were also excellent. The Inn has a traditional country pub atmosphere and the service was good.
