Amazing Sunday lunch... Too much food to finish off. However, if you're a dog lover, take them too.... They have a doggie Sunday lunch for FREE, They have recently spent money on a paint job, much more inviting than before. Only flaw; toilets need some investment. Other than that, great staff, good pint, great Sunday roast and doggie dinner too ! Thank you

We popped in to have a meal, we were made to feel very welcome, we had our 2 dogs with us, We were happily surprised to be told our dogs could have a free dinner! What a lovely thing to do. Our meal arrived in good time, I ordered a chilli con carne, it was spot on, I even told the staff how yummy it was! It was spicy to eat, the chilli was homemade. My daughter had burger and chips, again this was yummy as it was homemade. I would highly recommend this pub.

The fish and chips were really good and plenty of it, however didn't come with tarte sauce or slice of lemon. Ordered a child's burger which was unrecognisable and the bun was solid. Lasagne had good flavour but was dry. We asked for ketchup as there wasn't any available, it never appeared went to bar to let them know about things and there was nobody around to talk too. So we left disappointed.

We went in for a few drinks a potentially look at lunch but it looks run down and filthy! We stayed for one drink but it felt so grubby, it was literally falling apart. The floor had duct tape down in several places, other area were patched up with MDF and others just showed an exposed foam like floor???! The floor was just exposed concrete, it was like we went in during a renovation but in checking the other reviews on here that’s normal! My husband said the men’s toilets stank of urine, I didn’t use the ladies loo as decided I’d rather use the public toilets down the road. Last serving was nice and friendly though.

Thought about eating here, but the inside seems to be a "work in-situe" situation, and despite a menu being advertised, we just had a drink. Hoping that it is just a temp situation, but no carpets, cheap "cafe" furniture, and small and bland range of drinks, and certainly not a place to eat in at the moment

We wandered in on a Monday night to find no other customers other than one, obviously a regular, propping up the bar. The barman was unable to provide Prosecco or indeed the correct glass for my Wife's second option. There was no carpet which was probably a good thing given how sticky and nasty the other furniture was, then when we thought things couldn't get anywhere another customer appeared who was very clearly on more than alcohol! This pub sits between two of Sidmouths main streets, is huge and really could be a destination instead of the last vestiges of the desperate and homeless. Avoid, avoid, avoid.p

We visited yesterday, 31st July, on the Sunday of Sidmouth Folk Festival but was left feeling disappointed with the quality of food and the price paid for the Breakfast. All of the items were bland, they had no taste whatsoever, it was not a good sausage, the beans were not of a quality for the amount of money that we paid. I was disappointed that the toast was already buttered, this made it soggy - I would have preferred to have buttered it myself. The tomatoes were out of a tin., never a good sign. That was my meal. My husband couldn't swallow the bread on his sausage sandwich & nearly choked on it. We couldn't even touch our coffees, I was sad to think that in this day and age, there was not any Decaff coffee to cater to my health needs. We will not be making a return visit. Your food was way overpriced, I suspect this is to profit from the hoardes of people that go to the Folk Festival

My husband and I were in Sidmouth for the Jubilee Weekend which was busy as you would imagine. We popped into the Black Horse pub which is right in the middle of Sidmouth. There was only us and a local lady in the pub. The barman was quite friendly however, the pub table had not been wiped, the rest of the pub looked unclean too. I used the ladies toilet and was appalled at how dirty it was, no toilet paper in one toilet, and nothing to dry you hands on after using the facilities. Suffice to say we left after paying over £6.00 for two soft drinks - there being no-one else in the pub when we left. I would politely suggest that they need to clean their act up in more ways than one as it is in a prime location.

3 of us visited for a late lunch on a beautiful sunny day in Sidmouth. The place was clean. Warm friendly welcome given along with details of the place was operating as now re- opened after lockdown. Track & trace slips issued. We opted for beer battered fish & chips with peas and tartare sauce. The menu also offers smaller portions of main courses which is great when you have a senior with you as they find it off-putting when you get a huge plate of food in front of you. Good friendly service. Value for money.

Firstly we could take our dog in with us and secondly the food was excellent, the steak pie was one of the best I’ve ever had especially with the (what looked and tasted like) home made meaty gravy. We went there for lunch end of November, while visiting Sidmouth. My salmon arrived as it if had been cooked and then reheated, sauce to go with it had a thick skin on top, some potatoes which partially were reheated and soggy and some looked like might have been cooed first time. My husband ordered a pie, when meals arrived, my husband asked for some gravy, the waitress disappeared and did not come back, In the meantime he discovered that meat in the pie ( what was sitting under the puff pastry top, not a pie really) was luke warm. Not having any luck with a waitress returning he went to the bar and asked for warm food. After a while food arrived, with even his started potato in the same place, straight from the microwave.

When we first arrived the pub was clean and rather empty. There was one table of people having coffee and a few gentlemen at the bar having drinks. We found ourselves a table and looked over the menu. My parter and I opted for the ‘winter deals’ Battered cod fillet and skin on fries for £5.75, while his mom opted for a Spanish omelette with chunky chips. We all had a fizzy drink 2 half pints of coke and a half pint of lemonade. Unfortunately all three drinks where flat. I returned to the bar to ask if it would be possible to change the drinks and stated I believed the gas may have gone. The lady behind the bar, (who was very rude), Informed me that the widgets in the glasses were ‘dead’ and that was causing the drinks to be flat, however she would go and check the gas. When she returned she said nothing and began rushing around behind the bar. My parter asked if it would be possible to change them. And she snapped at him saying to ‘just hang on a minute’ . After remaking the drinks they were again flat. And tasted awful. I decided not to return to the bar again as I knew it would be more hassle than it is worth. As My parter and I are both supervises in a hotel ourselfs, I can confirm that in fact the gas had gone on the post Mix machine. After about a 20 minute our food arrived and to no surprise it was less than average. The ‘cod’ was from frozen and pre-battered, barely a fillet and very greasy. Fries were barely warm and the peas were dry and tasteless as if they had been microwaved from frozen. The omelette it’s self was okay, good size and a good amount of filling but the chips again let the meal down as they tasted and appeared as if they had been re-fried multiple times. We ate what we could as we were hungry and there wasn’t really anywhere open for food. Very disappointing as other reviews looked good. Will not be returning.

The Black Horse allows you to select your own table and order at the bar when ready, we both had burger meals with chips and coleslaw, when we ordered they apologised and said they had run out of coleslaw so my husband asked for a substitution and they were happy to oblige. Visited here with my girlfriend for dinner before going to the cinema. We had pre rang the cinema and asked them what time the actual film started as we wanted to avoid the adverts and have more time to get something to eat. We arrived at the black horse and ordered 2 steak meals quickly. We were surprised that the food was taking so long to come out as it wasn't particularly busy. After checking the time again we had realised that almost an hour had past and we were going to miss the first half hour of the film and then our food arrived. Good quality steak cooked to preference, but a little on the cold side. Chips also were like warm. Peas on the other hand piping hot... The peppercorn sauce tasted very nice but was very watery. By the time we finished our meal it was too late to go to the cinema. Nice pub food, good price for quality but slow service and cold food.

Myself, partner and two children came in for lunch during our visit to Sidmouth and to be quite honest we wish we hadn’t bothered. The whole place looked grubby and dated but as it was fairly busy we thought we’d give it a chance. We were seated by a rude lady and handed two menus that were sticky and dirty. Had to have two sets of cutlery changed as they clearly hadn’t been cleaned! But by the far the worst part of our visit was the food, it was inedible. Absolutely disgusting. We had the lasagne, black horse gourmet burger, the children’s burger and the children’s meatballs. My son couldn’t even eat the meatballs (which is normally his favourite meal) and my other son had two small bites of the burger and refused to eat it. My partner couldn’t stomach the burger and I had the lasagne which was the most vile meal I’ve honestly ever seen, it looked like dog food. The garlic bread that came with two of our meals was dripping in grease. I’m really struggling to see how the chefs / waiting staff could look at these meals and feel happy enough to give them to customers. The worst place we’ve ever eaten, won’t be revisiting and would advise anyone visiting Sidmouth to eat anywhere but this place!! If I could give zero stars I would.

While visiting Sidmouth, we called in at lunchtime, were told we could sit anywhere, took the window seat very nice that was, ordered the food by the bar, chicken nachos, baked potato beans and cheese, and a children's cheese burger. Then the wait started they were not that busy, after asking staff how much longer, it finally arrived, the baked potato had a layer of melted butter floating over the whole dish, which looked disgusting, but worse to come was the dogs hair in it, my daughter did not eat any, when I complained I was offers a 50 % refund, on the backed potato, I finally got the full refund. The chicken nachos were very greasey so half was left, children's cheese burger was dry and left quarter of it. On the whole a very disappointing visit slow service, sticky tables, and not even a proper apology off the owner, this was left to one of the bar staff. My advice would be use somewhere else.

As the restaurants and cafes in town were busy with the lunch time trade we decided to call in to The Black Horse Inn, as they did no look very busy and there was plenty of tables to choose from. This really should have rung alarm bells as every where else where busy. There were three of us so decided to order drinks and sandwiches as this would be quick (so we thought) in fact it took one hour twenty minutes to get them. I asked at the bar what the hold up was and was informed we were next and people who arrived after us were getting served. Excuses seemed to flow very easily. When they did arrive the food was of low quality and small portions. Nice pub to take dogs, friendly staff but the food was just average pub food with little effort put into presentation. My food was not as hot as I would have liked but we ate and left as it was late and we were hungry.

Stopping in Sidmouth for a few days, and noticed this place while walking around the town. We returned that evening, and found as well as the traditional pub area, it opened up into a clean modern restraunt section. It has an extensive menu, covering most tastes. As we enjoyed our visit , we ate there twice during our short stay. Each time the food was very good, tasty ,well cooked and very good value.Staff are friendly and efficient and made us feel welcome. Everything about the place is good, and we would recommend it.

The staff were really really lovely and mostly the size of the portions was good. However, my friend ordered surf and turf and I had a prawn cocktail. Both got told there were no prawns so asked for extra crab etc. My dish turned up with the tinniest (once frozen) prawns I have ever seen, and his turned up with his alternative but with a steak that was so little, it should have really just been called Surf! Other than that, the food was tasty.

Visiting Sidmouth and looking for lunch then this is a really good choice. Visited with family age ranging from 73 to 1 year old. Service was good and all staff really friendly. Food was really enjoyable and large portions and freshly cooked, huge variety on the menu to cater for all. Reasonably priced, worth a visit!!

Pub was cold and toilets were to be desired. They were helpful in the fact that we could bring our dog into the tiled restaurant area. Tables were sticky and wobbly. Menu was vast but with average things. I opted for the cod and parsley on the specials board, it was okay but nothing ‘special’. My partner had the Hake and spaghetti which was over cooked and soggy. A shame as it cost us £35.

The service was a little slow and the draught Hop House 13 lager was off which was disappointing. I had the vegan chilli with the cauliflower rice as I thought that was quite an interesting choice and it was OK but it was a bit lacking in depth of flavour.

Proper old pub great beers on tap and friendly staff. It has a funny old sort of smell to the place, we couldn’t quite work it out?! Didn’t look at the food or menu so can’t comment plus it was too late for lunch and too early for dinner. Would definitely return for a beer and to escape the cold October afternoon.

We visited with our 1 and 4 year old on Tuesday of half term. The food was nice and reasonably priced. The portions for children were far too big so a lot of waste. They had the meatball pasta and sausage and mash with gravy. The gravy did not come so we had to ask for it. It was far too thick and a bit luke warm.

I cannot comment on the quality of the food because - after waiting for over three-quarters of an hour for our food - we got totally fed up and asked for our money back and left. We had enquired at least 3 times to be told “10minutes” every time. We were a party of three and our food was by no means complicated. Following another complaint we were told the manager would come to talk to us but even that didn’t happen. We certainly do not recommend the Black Horse.

Went back to try their breakfast again and pleased to say it was a lot better. It is so reasonably priced as you can pick the items you want rather than have a fixed menu. All cooked well and served quite quickly. Glad we gave it another chance and will come again

Treated my son to a Sunday roast for his birthday today 23rd sept '18 --the meal was very nice --we have always had a lovely roast at The Black Horse and have been many times over the last few years -even though we live about 20 miles away -staff always courteous and the meal arrived pretty quick today -however after asking for a sweet menu the young lady brought it --then doddled around with her cleaning spray and cloth into the upper room and that was that -other times we have always Been asked what we would like ----so after waiting for about 10 minutes with no sign of her coming back (not busy as no one was in the upper room and only four in the doggy room-we decided to go ---so we paid up and went I was £10 better off The BH was down on £10 !!!! Otherwise all ok couldn't be bothered to say anything ---

A truly hidden gem of a place, excellent food, great service and great beer! My wife and I found this place just by walking among the shops and restaurants so we thought we’d give it a try as the outside menu looked inviting and the prices were very reasonable. Warm welcome awaited and we quickly sat down to look at a packed menu but also the specials on the wall, as it was a Sunday, I had the Roast Pork, not as good as mine! But one of the tastiest I’ve eaten in a long time, only thing was no crackling! My wife had the mushroom risotto, which was lovely . I would totally recommend this hidden gem of a place, we will be back, thank you for a pleasant experience x

We visited whilst on holiday on 13th August 2018. They let dogs in which was why we chose it. We'd been on the beach of this lovely town and were all starving. My children chose Sausage and Mash & gammon and Mash, I chose Hunters Chicken and fancied Mash too! what a mistake! The Mash was truly disgusting! it tasted of fish and was a grey colour - it had clearly been sitting around for sometime or had been scraped off a fish pie???? The chicken was overcooked and I struggled to find the BBQ sauce that would normally be spread liberally on this dish! We had one good meal out of eight which were the faggots. Would not recommend and would not visit again.

Up to this point, me and my mother had a wonderful day in Sidmouth. We were both starving when we got to the Black Horse. So we popped in. Mum really fancied fish and chips and I fancied the soup and chicken goujons. The staff were very helpful and were able to answer all my queries. The bubbly atmosphere they created really enhanced the good experience we had in the venue. The decor had a very surfer-esque edge to it with pictures of camper vans. The chairs were incredibly comfortable as well and that was brilliant after looking at all the shops in Sidmouth.

Well where do I start? My husband ordered the special which was supposed to be place, but was told it was hake when brought to the table - it was inedible anyway. It was overcooked and watery and he really struggled to eat it even after heavily seasoning it! They did change it for something else though. AND then my meal was absolutely fine until I decided to add salt and vinegar but I didn't just get vinegar to enhance my dining experience, 6 little fruit flies who had drowned in the jug plopped out onto my plate too. Then when I visited the facilities there was this poem in one of the cubicles. The staff did seem run off their feet and they did go and collect in all of the vinegar jugs before we left.
