Black Horse in Cherwell

We popped into The Black Horse after a long day at Blenheim Palace. It was busy because England were playing South Africa in rugby. On entering, we asked the manager if there was a table for 2, she found us one with no problem at all. We were told there would be a half hour wait for food, but it arrived within 20 minutes, and when it did, it was delicious. A big thank you to the staff, from us both

We had a great meal here a few weekends ago. There were 15 in our party so we had to pre-order. This worked out really well; the food was delivered very quickly and was all very good. The staff members were friendly and the prices were good too. Thank you :)

Staff were very friendly and we were served quickly. When the food arrived it was hot and of good quality and portion size. We had items off the main menu rather than Sunday roast. Staff checked to see everything was ok with the meal and asked if we needed anything else. Would happily recommend to anyone.

Visiting from the US, we met an older gentleman on the bus and he recommended the Black Horse. The staff was very friendly, I had the chicken shawarma on flatbread, the chick was so moist it was really really good. The big plus was they gave us a good amount of ice. 😆 The atmosphere felt like home and the price was perfect. Only came to $28 for both me and my husband’s meals. He had the meat and ale pie that was pipping hot.

Indulged in their 2 meals for £14.49 and it did not disappoint. Gammon and lasagne! Absolutely delicious as always but today was the best! Staff always accommodating and polite. Lovely little place to spend an afternoon .

I had a delicious sweet chilli chicken wrap and some coffee. It was lovely and had excellent and friendly service. Id definitely recommend it!

Great atmosphere, plenty of space and welcoming staff

Stopped off at the black horse for a quick bite to eat. We all had the roast beef which was delicious especially considering the price. Even though the staff were busy, they offered us excellent service. Before we’d even asked, they brought us some extra gravy to the table. Would definitely recommend and will be visiting there again soon.

We regularly go to Greene King pubs for food. Unfortunately today we were left really disappointed. We all ordered the same meals, slow cooked beef ribbed burger. It took over 50 minutes to receive the meals. All I could taste was burnt food, the burger and bun were black. My husband and son poured the BBQ dipping sauce over there's to help with the taste. The fries weren't rosemary flavoured and you were only given a handful of fries if that! Nobody came over to ask if everything was ok. We will not be returning to the Black Horse!

Popped in at lunch time to enquire about food options spoke to Caitlin and Connor the chef we wanted the roast dinner however as we wanted to dine at £6 pm Caitlin explained the roast dinners were likely to be sold out. Connor immediately offered to set two meals aside for us. When we arrived staff could not have been nicer. We both enjoyed our meals and have no hesitation in recommending the warm welcome we from all the staff.

A disaster!! This is where Gordon Ramsey would freak out!! 80% of the menu is not available, even though we had reserved in advance for dinner and drinks (9/3/2024)! Had a glass of Abbot Ale at a sticky table, it was lukewarm and in a dirty glass, left half of it. (The brewery is probably not happy about that!) We walked to the "Red Lion" and everything was fine.

Treated my granddaughter to lunch as she came visiting both myself and her friend since she moved to Devon. Food was delicious: I had Macaroni Cheese & Triple Chocolate Brownie with Hot Custard very tasty. Granddaughter had BBQ Cheese Fries & Chocolate Lava Cookie sweet but very nice. Even though all TV’s had football on it was quiet as most sitting in garden. Lovely premises, staff friendly and accommodating. Would recommend a visit. A*****

Only know we parked, and found notice on door saying no staff and pre-booked only.. On one of the busiest weekends in the year, RIAT, no staff.. Read almost identical to the Premier Inn. That's another review.

We had a great Sunday meal. Great price, lovely food and amazing service!

Decided to try here for a Friday Pub lunch. We arrived at 1.30pm, pub was moderately busy inside, most people were there for drinks though. We sat outside in the (concrete) garden, and there was one other table waiting for food. We ordered from the Lunch menu, hunters chicken and lasagne, plus two kids meal deals. We ended up waiting 1 hour for food!! No apology for a delay either. The adult meals were pretty sad looking, the lasagne was probably one of the worst I've ever eaten, but by this time, I was so hungry, I'd have eaten anything! The kids meals were bad. The accompany cucumber and carrot sticks were basically covered in black mould and disgusting looking. So bad, that I removed them to stop my daughter even trying to eat them. What establishment, would send out decomposing food to a child!!! Absolutely shocking. The service we recieved was cold and unfriendly from the out set. Unfortunately, this is not a place I would ever want to return to.

Wow . Just popped in for a drink . Saw some of the dishes going out to patrons so decided to eat. Best decision ever . The food came out quick and hot and very tasty really made the day Thankyou.just been back 28th July at 16.15 asked whether doing food was told yes. Had a drink then went to order . Then as went to order food told no turkey no pie no steaks no gammon and with a virtual empty pub sign went up for 30 min wait for food Disappointed. Communication is key . Off to chip shop. Never again

Went for a Sunday roast but apparently there was a technical issue. However I know someone who works there and they said it's because the person in the kitchen can't be bothered to cook roasts because they only ever do it when someone else is there. I have been a couple of times recently and this pub is just not what it used to be. And you can tell by how quiet it is. Both times have been on a Sunday, with lush weather. And both times my part were the only ones in there (not the whole time but you'd have thought a pub on a Sunday in nice weather would be bustling). The quality of food is not as good as it could be. The roast we had on our previous visit wasn't great. The roast potatoes tasted like they were store bought (frozen) and cooked then reheated!! However all this being said. The front of house staff were all very nice friendly and helpful. Cannot fail them at all. It's a shame the food let our visits down. This pub should be busy on a Sunday!!!

We had fish and chips for lunch. I think it tastes delicious and the chips and fries are very crispy. And, the clerks in here are very nice. The atmosphere is really terrific. I really like the decorations in the pub.

We hired a Narrowboat on the Oxford canal. It was me, my wife, two kids also mother and father in law. We found The Black Horse, as our scheduled stop was around the Kidlington area. When we walked in, it was a very inviting welcome and it carried on from there, with the staff extremely accommodating and friendly. Special shout out to Lorna. The food was really good and very well priced. I will not hesitate to come back here again…probably next year on another narrowboat trip.

Went to watch the Oxford game (COYY! 💛) great vibes, good cider, super crispy chips & Hannah and the team were so friendly!

Very good atmosphere to watch the football - food was really good and affordable and they serve ice cold Guinness! Special mentions to Hannah she was so lovely and helpful while serving us - she also made special effort to check on us throughout our visit.

This isn't the closest pub to us but we travel just a bit further to make it our local, as the atmosphere is great, food is delicious, and they are dog friendly, shout out to hannah who our boy kush loves

We took my 91 year old disabled mother and sister in law over from Spain out for lunch to the Black Horse in Kidlington. What a great experience the staff were amazing the food was exceptional. You could not get better value for money anywhere around Oxford. Thank you very much for a wonderful time.

The food was really good this evening. Had the guest burger and it was fantastic. The wife had the Katsu Curry and was also really good. Can be hit and miss but was very impressed tonight. Defo the best pub grub in the village.

Pies are amazing! Booked originally for two but had a extra person added, that was no problem at all. Service was great. Food was great.We had a selection of the starter’s/ sharing plates , all were well presented and very yummy! Mains were the pies. Oh they definitely were the star of the show. Only thing that let it down was the mash potato, it was edible but just felt it lacked texture. Other than that it was delicious! Definitely will return again!

Had meals from senior menu. Actually not impressed. My food was OK but friends not so and staff were apologetic and gave her a refund. However. Its greene king that ought to be ashamed. Thought seniors were just getting a bit of a discount. Not less than half the portion. Big rip off. Praise the staff immensely. Very good service

Having been to another Greene King Pub in London the previous week for lunch where the meal and service was very indifferent this was a refreshing surprise. We had booked a table for 1215 and the lady serving said there would be a 30 minute wait for food as they had a new chef. That didn't bother us as live football was being shown. My daughter and I ordered a sirloin steak. This was nice and came with a garlic and mushroom sauce. The steak was cooked as ordered and was quite nice. We followed up with a fruit crumble and custard. This was very nice. The service was excellent. Will definitely visit again. The contrast from my previous visit to a Greene King Pub was so very different.

I had the email and thought the idea of the Chicken Kyiv burger sounded interesting so we decided to take a trip out with the dog for a drink and lunch on a Saturday afternoon, we weren’t disappointed very tasty and great value for money.

I regularly visit the Black Horse pub. It is an enjoyable and pleasant place to go to spend time with friends. The pub shows a good variety of sport with a good variety of drinks to choose from. The tables are always clean and tidy with the pub looking very nice and welcoming. My one complaint would be often there is a lack of bar staff tending the bar as I’ve noticed they spend lots of time in the kitchen and I’ve waited in excess of 15 minutes with nobody coming to the bar to check if there was any customers. Even with this, I would definitely recommend this pub for an evening out.

We went there based on reviews on Google. I don't understand. One of the waitresses was the only one to manage the whole room, so it was unpleasant and the food was not good. Neither good products nor well cooked. To avoid.

we arrived late in the day so quickly ordered food before the kitchen closed - service was quick and the staff were really friendly - everyone's food looked good (most had steaks), my burger was lovely & I particularly liked the bbq sauce in the pot.

Over the years, we have visited the Black Horse on many occasions, and it never disappoints. We went last Saturday lunchtime (20th Jan) a particularly busy day, as Arsenal were playing Chrystal Palace, so it was fairly packed out with supporters. However, we were greeted warmly by the two ladies by the bar, one I now know was called Caitlin, who couldn't be more helpful and pleasant, notwithstanding how busy they were, they were great and had time for pleasantries. They took our lunch orders, and it was served quickly, and to our liking. This has always been a warm, welcoming friendly pub, and is well known and popular with the locals. The food prices are very reasonable and the menu is varied, and suitable for all tastes. They welcome children, and dogs. Always a popular venue, and I see no reason why we wont keep going back.

We booked for Christmas lunch as we had a great experience last year, unfortunately we were disappointed this year. We had starters and then we waited about an hour for main course which was mostly overdone the potatoes and parsnips were inedible. The staff were not polite or attentive, not caring if we had sugar or sweeteners with our coffee. I got the feeling that this is a 'regulars' pub and as we are not regulars, received a second class service! Will be booking elsewhere next year.

Breakfast with santa. Absolutely fantastic. Such a lovely atmosphere all of the staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. It was well organised and ran like clockwork from beginning to the moment we left. Food was delicious. The children really enjoyed themselves. We will be going every year now.

I popped into the Black Horse at about 2.30pm, while I was having my car serviced at the Motor Park to the North Of Kidlington. This is s large spacious pub, with lots of seating. I had a burger and a small beer, which was exactly what I was looking for. Nothing to complain about here.

We visited here for the breakfast with Santa had never done this before so was not sure what to expect. On arrival we were welcomed by a lovely friendly lady who showed us directly to our table. We ordered our breakfast which when was delivered was really lovely and great value there was no quibble at all when we wanted to swap certain on items of the breakfast. Santa came to the table but unfortunately my grand daughter was terrified of him lol but she is only two. My older grand daughter loved it and really enjoyed the snowman hunt they both got really nice gift each a book and selection pack which really made this a great value experience. We would like to thank all the staff for making it such a lovely morning we felt so festive after...really loved Santa's grotto and got some great pics we will definitely book for next year and hopefully Santa will be in favor. Thank you all you are a real asset to the company.

We met Santa for breakfast on Sunday and it was lovely. A warm and friendly atmosphere, games and treats for the children and chat with Father Christmas. The breakfast was delicious (best bacon ever according to my son) and brilliant value for money. The two ladies running it were super friendly and enthusiastic. It felt like a proper treat. Thank you Black Horse Team - you were awesome.

Well it was a chance find as our plans went wrong but what a wonderful pub, friendly staff that could not do enough for you, quick service and beautiful food, I wish it was my local pub.

Visited for a work Christmas party. Great atmosphere, great service and good food. The team worked really hard to feed us and keep the drinks flowing. I’m Sure we will be booking again next year
