Black Dog in East Devon

Out for a walk around Lyme Regis & we followed the River Lim Trail. We noticed the Black Dog tearooms on one of the information boards & decided to pay a visit. We were so glad we did as our lunch was delicious. Homemade soup served with lovely homemade bread made using flour from the Town Mill. The cakes looked wonderful so we couldn't resist a slice of lemon & raspberry sponge for afters. It's certainly on our list of places to visit again especially as it was an easy walk from Lyme Regis.

Driving back from a weekend in Cornwall we visited Lyme Regis on the way home. We visited the mill and found out from the miller that the Old Black Dog tea room not only uses their flour but the food they produce is delicious. Based on that recommendation we visited for a late lunch and the welcome, the service and the food did not disappoint. It’s lovely to see a local business supporting the local mill and the team at the Old Black Dog are so friendly and passionate about what they do. What an absolute gem of a place, we even got great baking tips about the flour we purchased from the mill!

Stumbled upon this little gem whilst walking the dog on holiday in Lyme Regis after a recommendation from a local dog walker. Dog friendly, people friendly and the most delicious homemade scone and jam I've ever had. The staff went out of their way to make me feel welcome and offer advice on other lovely walks, can't recommend it more highly. Well worth the walk up the hill for!

My husband and myself really enjoyed our meals at the Black Dog. Delicious Welsh Rarebit for me and cheese and beans on toast for my husband, you know all the food is good quality and very nicely presented. The staff are lovely too. We had some scones to take home. Big yum. Gorgeous. In my top ten of eateries in the area.

Superb food, service amazing after a lovely walk up from Lyme Regis. Our boys enjoyed scone, soup and sandwich while we tucked in to a sharing platter. Beautifully presented and very tasty. Would highly recommend.

Had a family get togther here at the beginning of June to celebrate my Mum's 80th birthday. There were about 10 of us in all attending. It was all very good food and the staff did an excellent job catering for us.

We phoned in the morning to book a table. So glad we did as there was a constant stream of people. We arrived a little bit early which sadly flustered the lady. We offered to come back at our allotted time as we felt bad but she sorted out the tables for us. We all ordered our cream teas. Some with plan scones and some with fruit. The scones came and we weren't disappointed! They were still warm and looked amazing. There were 6 of us in our group and two girls aged 12 in the group who had never experienced a cream tea before!! Needless to say they LOVED it! The scones were so tasty with the provided clotted cream (lots in the pot! Yum!) and we all chose strawberry jam. The table was very quiet whilst we all savoured the delightfulness of it all! We had tables inside but there was a garden out the back with tables too. Dogs are allowed (not to my preference) and all the ones inside behaved impeccably. There was one particularly loud guest who felt the need for everyone to know what he had done and where he worked etc. Not the cafes fault but we didn't need to know it! (Why are people like that?!) He also felt it was his duty to tell off one of our party for cutting his scone in half! Any way! I would highly recommend this tea room as a lovely treat for a cream tea, if you are in the area. Be aware there isn't much parking outside. Luckily we were able to park on the street.

This is an absolute 10/10 for the environment, the atmosphere, the customer service & the scones! The best scones we’ve ever had. It was a pleasure to meet these staff and experience their cafe. Thank you!

Passed this cafe one evening and returned as looked welcoming with parking. Lovely garden setting for lunch. Dog friendly also sell dog treats. Friendly staff where nothing was too much trouble. Would recommend

After reading other reviews and it only being up the road from where we were staying we stopped for lunch on our way to beer caves. A standard menu is offered but with a specials board too, and a good selection of loose leaf teas which was great. We opted for the soup which was a spicy tomato and canellini bean served with fresh bread, and I went off the specials which was a focaccia and nibbles board. Both meals were really delicious washed down with a black dog blended tea, and a slice of rhubarb and vanilla cake. Very enjoyable stop off.

We visited Black Dog today for the first time, but definitely not the last. Beautiful, fresh warm scone served with clotted cream, and wonderful home made blackcurrant jam. Such a lovely spot to relax in the gardens, and the staff couldn’t have been nicer, despite being rushed off their feet. Dogs are welcome too. Highly recommended.

Delicious coffee excellent poached eggs and mushrooms on toast. A warm and quirky welcome “Early birds, come on in.” and a lovely way to end our stay in Uplyme. We look forward to tasting the loose tea we bought, when we get home

Cute place. We’ve driven past here many a times and finally had the time to stop in. I’m really pleased we did. We sat out in the lovely garden surrounded by flowers and had the most tastiest sandwiches and cake. Especially the Murharama and goats cheese sourdough sandwhich with salad. Every single bite had so much flavour to it. We are really pleased we stopped here.

Lovely garden with shaded tables. Excellent quality, homemade food for lunch. Had a homemade foccacia platter with salads and pickles. Well presented, very fresh and tasty. The large homemade scones were delicious with plentiful thick cream and jam. Excellent.

6 of us plus a baby and a dog arrived mid afternoon last Fri and were put in the summer house with lovely views. The staff and owners were lovely, bringing treats for our Labrador also. The scones were delicious still warm from the oven and the chorizo sandwich looked amazing! What a gem of a find , thank you !!

Lovely, clean, welcoming tea rooms with an excellent range of home baked produce which is beautiful presented. We booked, which I would recommend especially in the summer months. The focaccia was particularly good, freshly made, as were the scones! Sonia and the other staff were very friendly- please don’t change a thing! They have their own car park, and a pretty garden for warmer months! I can’t wait to return!

Excellent food and service, very dog friendly. We sat down and they brought the dog a bowl of water and even treats. The food is very nice and so well done for lunch all fresh and tasty and the home made soup was delicious. We were full after lunch so missed out on the scones but a good reason to return. Lovely quality all round.

Called in on route to Cornwall for a sneaky cream tea as the scones here are always gorgeous. We were tempted by their “winter scones”- with cranberries and cinnamon! They were AMAZING and should be tried if you can visit! Such a good start to our holiday! Hubby reckoned they were better than fruit scones!

oh, dear me, what a fab place to stop off in. used to stop for a bottle of coke and a packet of ready salted crisps when we were kids. home baked goodies, fabulous teas and welcomed in as though we were family, had a chat while deciding what we fancied. have been back several times now and trying to go through the menu - everything is bloody good

Fabulous afternoon tea and a very warm welcome for us and our dog who was given water and treats. The owners are charming. Afternoon tea was excellent and the scones were as good as my mum makes! We will be back!

Came across the Black Dog tearoom quite by accident, amazing menu, dog-friendly, and charming people. Recommend the cheese and chorizo on toast! Apple cake was blissful; I even tried to get the recipe from the cook!

Whist on family break in area we visited Black Dog Tea Room last Tuesday afternoon for a cream tea. It was superb: Generous helpings of jam and cream and homemade scones (we all had the cream tea) plus a good selection of homemade cakes. We can recommend their tea room blend tea - in fact we all bought some jam and tea. The staff were very friendly and attentive, location superb - we sat in their lovely garden on a warm sunny autumn afternoon. We will all definitely visit again on our next family mini-break!

We stopped in here en route to Cornwall (my wife and 1 year old daughter). First of all the staff are great, really friendly and attentive, they loved our little girl. Then there is the food, clearly a lot of care has gone into the ingredients selection, a lot of good healthy foods available with some great treats. The only possible hick-up is the parking, there is not loads of well-configured spaces and parking elsewhere did not appear to be available. We will come back here!

Always buy my cream teas here. Nowhere else. I wait until I am in in Lyme because they are second to none. 57 years of experience so trust me. Scones home made on premises. Not traditional but recommend the black current jam which is also made by the chefs fair hands. Excellent family service. Beautiful garden. Delicious cakes if you must.

fabulous tea room with excellent food & drink. me & bob ordered a toasted ham & cheese sanwich whilst my wife opted for the smaller cream tea. we were quite stunned at the quality of the food & drink & was way beyond expectations. this was no ordinary toastie & my wife said its the best scone she'd ever had. all set in a beautiful garden & the lovely owners couldn't have been nicer. can we give an 11 out of ten? ray, tracy & bob from east dorset.

Just what we needed after a long hot walk (and not having had breakfast!). We arrived at 3.30 and normal tea rooms have not much left in the menu. My husband (who’s birthday it was) had the rarebit and I had mushrooms on toast (with extra cheese I cheekily asked for). Both were yummy!! If we’d been at home we would have licked our plates! We sat out in the garden on a sunny afternoon, we couldn’t have asked for more. The chef sat with us and took our order and had a nice chat and both waitresses were very attentive and wished my husband a Happy Birthday. We will definitely revisit.

Visited twice on our weekend break to Uplyme. Would highly recommend, the scones were amazing. Obviously homemade and warmed through the oven, so tasted fresh and light. Lovely people and lovely setting. We will definitely visit again if we are in the area.

We came to Lyme Regis from Torbay to take the dogs to the beach somewhere we haven't been before. After stopping on the beach, we looked for somewhere to stop for a snack and drink before heading home. We came across this beautiful little place....

This is the loveliest and most friendly tearoom I have ever visited. Food was above and beyond anything expected and the scones are to die for.

It was our first visit to this tea room. The staff were friendly and helpful. I had a piece of (vegan) black current tart and it was delicious. We sat outside in the sun and I could of sat there all day. The tea room is not a vegan or vegetarian one but does provide plenty of options for a vegan, vegetarian or someone who is gluten free. Will be definitely returning and hopefully having lunch.

Last year I visited 65 different cafes. So far I have managed 48 this year. This one is the BEST. It was so well presented that I assumed that it was newly opened but learnt they had made use of Lockdown time. I got a fabulous bacon and egg sandwich with home made bread and chilli jam. They clearly know their local customers. I called in as I travelled from Cornwall to Hampshire. I would love this to be my local but I live in Newcastle but I will be back if I pass near by in the future. Thank you !

I am gluten free and the cake I had was light as a feather and extremely tasty, a raspberry and cream Victoria sponge.Coffee also exceptionally niceMy friend had a good size pot of teal and said the cake was also excellent.The owner was friendly and very chatty, and told us her husband had baked them. I think he deserves a Hollywood handshake.We will be back for more

First time eating inside since Covid started,Tables spaced out well and airflow from open door and window, also very clean.Food was excellent as always, had the scrambled egg on toast, with mushrooms and tomatoes.My wife had the same but with poached eggs,My son had the Brie and bacon roll,My other son had bacon and scrambled egg on toast.All the food is excellent and very reasonably priced,Especially when you consider so much is home made.The owners are very accommodating and friendly,Dogs also very welcome.Will be back soon as they also do some very good cake!

Called in here for a much needed late lunch after a longer and more tricky walk than we planned for. It didn't matter that we were a bit muddy and we had some fantastic Leek and Potato soup and a scone which erked us up no end. Thanks

You know when you're having a bad week and you visit a dear friend? You chat, and eat a meal cooked with love, and leave feeling a hundred times better? That's just what a trip to this teahouse feels like. There are two cheerful rooms and a garden full of birds (we were visited by a robin), friendly people and delicious, simple homemade food. It's a very special place.

We bookended our trip to Lyme with a visit to the tearooms; sitting in the lovely garden chatting to the friendly owners and eating a cream tea seemed the perfect start, and end, to our week. Our regret is that we don't live in Lyme in order to visit here more often and to try more food; along with Lilac, this was really a highlight of our week.

We took a walk from Lyme along the river and decided to drop in here for lunch. Unfortunately we hadn’t booked a table but was not a problem and were fortunate to get a table in the garden. Lovely spot with butterflies etc. Lunch was great. Rarebit was superb as was the grilled Halloumi and crumble cake. They are very dog friendly and each dog is given a bowl of water. Loose leaf tea so nicer than the bag variety.Will definitely pop in again if in the area.

The best rarebit I've ever had, tasty is not the word and a huge portion. Dorset apple cake, and nectarine crumble with clotted cream were bloody delicious.

We went for brunch and the food and service were simply amazing! The chef tailored all our food to our taste and even brought water for the dog. I only wish it was closer to home!

We first came to black dog tea room in June and couldn’t wait to return. Such friendly staff and amazing food. Yesterday we had the most amazing bacon and Brie sandwich and the rarebit. The garden is relaxing and lovely in the sun. We will be back to sample some more of the food the next time we are in Lyme. Be patient the food being fresh and home cooked takes time but is worth waiting for

We hadn't booked and were lucky to get a table, so do try to book in advance!We ordered a bacon sandwich on sourdough and halloumi on sourdough toast. There was a slight delay as the bread was still in the oven, but we were warned. It was 100% worth the wait. We're only sorry we waited until our last day as the little savoury scone we had was deliciously light and left us wishing we could try their scones.All the staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful, despite being very busy.

Outside seating great service and food. We had afternoon tea all made with locally sourced produce but also made in house so very fresh. I would recommend booking before you travel here as very popular

A lovely welcoming place. We sat outside in glorious weather. The food is fresh, generous portions and so, so, tasty. The salad ingredients seem to be sourced from their own kitchen garden. Everyone enjoyed their menu choices all of which came with a small cheese scone. Service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

Had lunch today and it was so tasty. The guys were so nice and friendly. Sat in the garden house which was lovely, overlooking the garden and hills beyond. Going back tomorrow. Highly recommend.

I never ever write reviews, but I just had to on this occasion , if you visit Lyme Regis and don’t visit the black dog then you’re quite simply missing out on THE BEST cream tea I've ever had and I’ve had a few in my time , service was very friendly and very human and the home made food to die for. We will definitely be making another visit before returning home this Friday

We are a family of four staying in Lyme Regis. Been out for the day and decided to stop here as it looked so nice. We were approached by a very stressed out lady who said if you have not booked there will be a problem !!!!!!!! we said ok and went to leave - she then said i will see if i can squeeze you in. She came back and said in a loud voice its a one off but will get you in. Made to feel like we were a real nuisance. We sat down and she barked the menus are out there so make your minds up. We all looked at each other and laughed out loud we left via a side entrance never to return.

We did a round trip walk from Lyme along the stunning river and stopped off at the Black Dog for a cream tea. The couple running the cafe could not have been more welcoming. We sat in their beautiful garden with our dogs and the cream tea is exactly what might hope for. Despite their popularity, the owners went out of their way to make us and our dogs feel welcome and as if they had been waiting all day just for us! Could not recommend this cafe highly enough. Authentic, personal food and service to match. Worth the walk from Lyme.

Super place, just outside Lyme Regis, very organised and covid safe. Excellent fare, very well served and reasonably priced. 3 dog biscuits for the woof too.

We hadn’t reserved; were just passing and fancied a cream tea but despite being busy and close to closing this lovely, very accommodating place were so helpful and able to squish us in for the most delicious cream tea! Delicious scones, ample real cream and fabulous jam and the tea was wonderful. I expected to pay a premium being so close to a tourist hotspot but was very pleasantly surprised with an extremely good value, reasonable Bill too! We will definitely be back and many thanks again ;)

This place is not to be missed if you're visiting Lyme. ( booking is a must) )We had 2 fabulous meals here, afternoon tea & a lunch. The extensive menu covers all tastes & nothing is too much trouble. The food is to die for, freshly prepared & good size portions. Beautifully prepared salads, cakes, bread, scones & all made here by a very talented chef. The staff are in a class of their own & made us all feel very welcome with their own touch of good old fashioned humour. Covid restrictions were in place & we shall return. You can even stay in the B & B.

Great experience!The scone and cake we had was outstanding and the lady waitress was so kind and welcoming!Would highly recommend booking in advance as we seen a few guests turned away due to being fully booked. Best booking at least a couple of hours in advance.I had lost a set of keys in my car in the morning and couldn't get them out. I told the owner/waitress about this as needed their advise to find a local car garage to pull my car apart as we were not local. Her partner came out and plucked my keys out! Could not be more thankfull and happy with the customer service. We had purchased one of his homemade Christmas Jam too! Will definitely be returning if we come back to Lyme Regis!

I would recommend this place for the extraordinary waitress. She told us to ‘oh god hurry up’ as we tried to pick some drinks. Maybe she thought we couldn’t hear her under her mask.The drinks weren’t the best and she explained she ‘would try’ to make them.I can recommend the scone though and I’d visit again as it was extremely odd.

Delicious loose leaf tea with warm cheese scones, divine coconut & lime cake and lovely Victoria sponge. A cut above other establishments visited so far this week.

We were looking forward to a really relaxing tea, sandwich and delicious piece of cake, however, the clear lack of staff and stress shown by the owners, somewhat spoilt the experience. The attitude towards “The Public” (as described by the owner)was appalling . Maybe, they need to look at the signage to help “The Public”follow the process they have put in place. I actually felt genuinely sorry for an elderly couple who turned up in the garden, whilst we were drinking our tea, to be greeted by sarcastic remarks about there being a booking system, of which they knew nothing, as they had entered by the side gate, next to the car park, which appears to be the logical point of entry (and the gate was wide open). The owners need to make it clearer at this point or ensure that the gate is locked so that potential customers make there way to the front door. An A sign visible from the road stating that booking is required and a telephone number would also help. It is clear that two people running the cafe during good weather, where at present people prefer to be outside in a beautiful garden, does not work. Tables were full of dirty plates and it took an incredibly long time for both food and drinks to arrive. It is such a shame, the food is amazing, fresh well presented, extensive menu, excellent quality and an incredible setting. Their attitude to the public leaves a lot to be desired!

A warm welcome with good Covid-19 social distancing in place. We hadn't booked but were lucky that there was space in the garden outside. A nice tea with great homemade scones with lots of jam and cream.

We found this cafe by chance when passing and were so pleasantly surprised. There is a beautiful English county garden at the back of the cafe. The menu offers both traditional tea room options as well as some different home made creations, amazing home made bread and some delicious kale pesto, the food was really exceptional. You have to book during the current COVID situation but they were kind enough to accommodate us when we turned up. Great customer service and we will definitely be returning if we’re passing again!

We had morning coffee in the beautiful garden, then tempted we stayed for lunch. Oh my...the best bacon sandwich in homemade sourdough and gammon and melted cheese tasted exquisite in same lovely roll. Pickle was delicious. All homemade and fresh. After more coffee, we made it home with take-away lime and coconut cake. Cannot rate it high enough.

The food was delicious but was it worth waiting 50 minutes for some sandwiches and cheese on toast? We planned to make a quick pit stop at the black dog tea rooms enroute to our hotel in Lyme Regis and was shown to an alfresco seating area in a beautiful country garden. The lady serving us did her best but seemed a bit overwhelmed and stressed with people walking in and out her way to use the toilets or read the menu. We understand that with Covid restrictions there are going to be some teething issues however our tray of teas were quite literally slammed on the table without asking if we wanted any sugar or extra milk, and our sandwiches arrived to the table one by one. We were hoping to try some of the cake however as we sat for a further 20 minutes without having our plates cleared we decided to up and go. An extra pair of hands would have helped perhaps?

Such a lovely tea room with excellent GF options. All food delicious and home cooked. The garden is absolutely lovely too! Would not hesitate to recommend and will definitely return on my next trip here! They also make their own tea which was great, we bought some to take home.

Lovely tea room, we had a cream tea which was superb. We turned up on the spur of the moment, as we were driving past on a wet day, the welcome was delightful and they were able to fit us in.

The views are pleasant from the gardens and the tea was enjoyable. It was relatively quiet when we went but it was nice all the same. The tea was a large cup and we enjoyed a big slice of cake too.

This is a lovely place. The scones were perfection, the cheese on sourdough toast delicious, plus there was proper leaf tea. The garden is very pretty and you can also sit inside. The staff were very friendly even though we phoned up to book only 10 minutes before we turned up. It isn’t very convenient to walk to from anywhere, but there is enough parking. I totally recommend it.

Found this little gem while going back to our campsite. Dogs are welcome , inside and outside seating available with a private room to use. We had scones , Dorset apple pie and chocolate brownies. No crumbs where left as it was yummy. Staff so helpful and really kind. Will return to try more of the menu.

This place is a real gem, serving beautiful homemade food, cooked to perfection.In fact it was so good we had to go back the next day!I really recommend the homemade scones (we even had a lovely savoury one with our sandwiches).What made the experience even more brilliant, was the beautiful garden you are surrounded by. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the yummy food and peaceful garden!

We came across this lovely tea room by accident on the way to Lyme Regis. We were the first customers in after lockdown and we were so impressed. Beautifully clean and the food I just fantastic. It justly deserves all the excellent reviews.

Food is very nice, everything is home made or comes from local producers. Prices are a little haphazard for example the massive bacon sandwich my son had was very good value, whereas my chorizo salad was probably priced at upper end of reasonable. That's not to say the food is expensive, it represents good value for the quality you get. Service is very friendly and atmosphere relaxed. It's not the place to go for a quick bite, service is not fast, more aimed at making it an occasion. Overall worth seeking out if your in the area.
