We booked a one night stop travelling home to Norwich from Scotland. Pub notified in advance the restaurant would not be open. On arrival told bar would close at 7pm. (Not much point of a pub stay then!). Room wasn't really fit - no toiletries, broken light, Internet not working. But it was clean. Going out for a meal (doh!) Was advised there would be no staff staying in ovetnight and we could have an emergency contact (little use as mobile service poor). We said we weren't staying although they showed little or no interest. Faced a late night unwanted drive and lost a morning in lovely York. The pub just wasn't ready for guests. Deplorable way to treat people and positively unsafe. Avoid!

Pub has recently reopened and live in the village so thought I'd try for a family birthday treat. Not busy - only about a dozen diners in and very limited Sunday lunch menu but service was slow. We arrived at 6:15 had a two course meal that took 1.5 hours. The meat in the 3 chicken roasts we had looked like leftovers or meat recovered from the carcass and between them contained less breast meat than my Caesar salad starter. The veg served with the meals was a long way short of what was suggested on the menu and the wine list is expensive. Feeling very ripped off. Anybody can make a mistake but whoever plated up those 3 meals must have known they were selling us short. I know they like to close by 10 so we didn't bother ordering dessert and I was too angry to make a polite complaint to the server who I figure was not to blame. I like to support local businesses but I think it will be a while before I go back.

Took my husband for a birthday meal we had microwaved food deep fried fish and chips that were bland and overcooked. I complained, was told Bill the landlord would call back he never did, the staff said he was having a meeting as the pub was strugglin, after poor reviews I'm not surprised. Start cooking real home cooked food that's not microwaved and tastes bland, you might get people, in recent reviews say it all, if you had called me back after numerous calls asking you to do so, I wouldn't be writing this poor review, also stop padding the buck to your bar staff as between you all you cannot run a pub!!!!

Very disappointing bit like faulty towers. Shower door broke shower head kept coming off. Toilet roll holder broke. Bar closed at 9pm on Thursday we went out for a meal as they had no chef when we returned at 9:05 the not very hospitable bar woman said they were shut and wouldn’t even serve us a drink to take to the room. Needless to say Won’t be returning

We phoned in advance to check that food was served on a Monday evening & were told 'yes' & it would not be neccessary to book a table. Sadly when we arrived we were told that food was not being served. Dissapointing as we then had to come up with another plan that involved driving into the city.

Visited three days ago on our way back from York. We thought we wouldn't get in as we hadn't booked but at 1pm it was pretty empty. We were confused as the pub itself is perfectly nice in a lovely village. Sunday Lunch was either pork or beef and we both chose the pork. The food took around half an hour to arrive and the sloppy mash was cold. The veg was frozen not fresh and the large homemade yorkshire pud was very dry and brittle. Nobody asked if everything was ok until the waitress collected the plates after we'd finished. She explained everything was cooked fresh but in the morning and then reheated. So tricky to understand why it took so long to arrive if it just needed reheating. So pub nice, meal poor, cold and dry and service needs improving. However, the pub was taken over in September so we will go again as these are all fixable points once they find their feed. Still strange the pub was almost empty though.

Definitely will not be coming back.Rooms were not very clean, found odd socks under the bed. Room tiny and toilet/shower room was tiny too and toilet was very noisy. Had food in the restaurant and no heating was on, so we were freezing!Breakfast was not very warm on numerous occasions either! Only positive is that it is near the 415 bus stop which takes you direct to York!

We spent 1 night here and thoroughly enjoyed it.Escrick is a pretty, quiet traditional village. I understand the new management have only been in for a couple of weeks so assuming its a work in progress. The bar and restaurant areas are very nice comfortable and inviting the staff are very friendly and helpful. We ate our evening meal and breakfast here which were both really tasty and nicely presented. The bedroom was ok, pristine white towels and sheets always a plus for me! It perhaps needed a bit of a spruce up décor wise but based on downstairs Im sure that will come. Its an ideal location for both York Designer Outlet and York centre (park and ride is at the outlet 10 mins away).. Would stay here again and recommend to others.

Popped in for lunch and a drink and from the first moment we received a warm welcome and excellent service. The food was excellent despite my menu altering choices, which were met with no problem whatsoever. The manager could not have been more accommodating, she was excellent. A lovely pub in a lovely area. We wish the new owners and staff all the very best.

Stayed for 2 nights over the August bank holiday weekend. The first room (7) we were put in was right next the the kitchens extractor fan and it sounded like a helicopter overhead. We were assured this would be stitched off by 9:30pm so would be fine in time for us going to bed, which it was. We ate in the pub the first night and the food was delicious, freshly cooked & piping hot. The portions very quite large though and I felt awful sending half my food back to the kitchen but I was just too full. The locals and other guests were lovely and friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our first evening. Our first night in our room however was awful, the noise from the extraction fan had stopped but was replaced by the toilet flushing continuously plus it kept overflowing so we couldn’t use it but there was no one available to complain to. I didn’t sleep a wink all night. By morning the bathroom was flooded, the toilet was over flowing, water was bubbling up from the shower and sink plug holes. At 7:15am the extraction fan was back on so now we had that to contend with too. I went down to ask to be moved and there was only the chef & the lady who serves breakfast in but the moved us straight away. Breakfast was amazing, the food was all perfectly cooked, fresh & piping hot and the service was second to none. It was very hot in the room we had for our second night (10) but couldn’t have the windows open because the room was directly above the car park, so quite noisy. At just after 7am someone was obviously delivering something and the noise they were making would have woke the dead, even beeping their horn I would recommend the hotel, especially for the food, service & atmosphere but if you’re looking for somewhere nice and quiet to stay and relax I probably wouldn’t recommend their rooms.

This venue has the potential to be better than it is. On arrival the restaurant was cold so I sat in my coat until it warmed up. The waitress service needs the finishing touches - they did not have the knowledge or confidence on drinks available and, once food was served, did the bare minimum to check everything was satisfactory. The food was standard ‘pub grub’ and when we asked about the ‘specials’ we were told there was a board by the bar. Prices are high for what it is; have been on previous occasions and thought it was better then. Lacking in atmosphere too. Would go back if we discovered improvements have been made.

I telephoned at 12 noon for a table at 5pm that day. The reservation was made and when my family and I arrived we was pointed towards a unclean table with crumbs all over it and the worst table in the room which was in front of a walk way for staff and left little room for manoeuvre. All the tables apart from one were empty. When asked if we could move we were told no all the other tables had been booked by “regulars”. Please don’t take bookings if you can’t provide a good service given 5 hours notice. Your hospitality to outsiders is diabolical.

We called in on our way home from shopping (it's been years since we last went but heard that there were new owners...apparently been there 3 1/2 years). With it being a Friday we both chose battered haddock (aka whale), chips and peas. It was perfectly cooked and red hot. The service and friendliness of staff was excellent and the surroundings, decor and ambience superb. The menu choices were extensive, even lighter lunchtime bites and a fabulous childrens menu, along with a specials board. Prices were good and you certainly got value for money. Whilst it had been many years since we last went, we will certainly go back sooner rather than later.

When we arrived in our room there was a loud humming and vibrating coming from an extractor right outside the window. When we went down to the bar we asked when the extractor would be turned off and we were told 9pm (end of meal service). We thought this would be OK. It did go a little quieter after 9pm and the vibrating stopped BUT it still made a fair amount of noise right through the night even with the window closed. There was a fairly inefficient fan but it would have been nice to be able to also open the window which the noise precluded.

My last visit was to an "Olde Worlde" style Pub, but the refurbishment to a more modern scene has worked well with comfortable seating and well spaced tables. Before supper we enjoyed Theakston's Black Bull Bitter; York's Yorkshire Terrier; and the eponymous Black Sheep. We then dined, enjoying a retro dish of Battered Whitebait (why has this disappeared from many menus/) & Tempura Prawns, followed by Chicken in a great sauce; Braised Lamb; and a wonderful Givendale Prime Rump Stake (a local Pedigree Herd), served with excellently cooked vegetables. But beware! - portions are generous!!! Finally, our young waitresses were totally professional and very cheerful - nothing was too much trouble and we wish them well.

Called for lunch on recommendation. The menu read very well and we were accommodated by changing the style of potato that came with the ordered meal. My wife chose a steak and asked for it to be cooked so that there was no pink in the middle. After an unusually long wait the meals arrived and the steak was losing blood. It was readily taken back and cooked out. The jacket potato, however, was so dry inside that the gloss was taken off the whole meal. The steak, whilst tender, had little taste. We will not be giving it a 2nd chance. The poor waitress was alone to deal with meals and the bar leaving customers waiting for service. (Not her fault)

I called to book a table for 17:20 and was asked to delay until 17:30 owing to their having a large party booked in at 16:30. That was fine.We arrived on time and were left seen but unacknowledged at the bar for about 7-8 minutes. The staff who saw us just continued talking to the two gents that she was conversing with without any attempt to ask us to wait a moment or to get another member of staff. The establishment was in no way busy. There were no other customers waiting to be attended to. We just didn't feel that we should interrupt.Just before we were acknowledged the apparently quite late 16:30 party of 20 or so teenage girls and their responsible adults bounded through to a function room at the back.We ordered drinks, still had to ask where we might sit and having immediately ordered our children's meals to get them fed quickly we were left to ponder the menu. We ordered 5 minutes later.20 minutes after that a member of staff came out to apologise that our meals would be a little while owing to the large party in the back.I interjected that they had shown late and that we had already arranged to delay the sitting to accommodate their planned time. I impressed that the children were restless and asked if they could serve us more presently. We were appeased and gave them the benefit of the doubt.5 minutes later our meals were brought out but were what I could only describe as poorly garnished. I had the sirloin and had only a whole roasted tomato and 4 quarters of mushroom as the veg. My wife's and mother-in-law's meals had the same quantity of garnish. Also, we were given two dishes of chips when our meals were supposed to have a portion each. We asked about this and were told that the two dishes were to share between the three of us. I think that our complaining caused them to rush our meals to appease us and was sadly disappointed with the outcome.Being fair, the real ale was an excellent temperature, my steak was correctly cooked and tasty, my wife's gammon was apparently very nice, but my mother-in-law said her burger was poor.Very disappointed. Obviously no tip was forthcoming and we are usually very keen to reward effort.

The meal didn't disappoint it was freshly cooked and absolutely delicious ! At breakfast they pushed the boat out and offered me fresh fruit salads , vegan sausages , tomatoes , cereals , yogurts , soya milk a selection of vegan cheese ! I felt very well looked after and catered for so this place really deserves the best review and recommendation for my fellow vegans ! Came in for a meal after work and before heading on to an evening commitment. Nice atmosphere and decor. The lady behind the bar checked the reservation and told us where our table was (would have been nicer to be shown to it, but minor niggle). As we were hungry but under time pressure, we asked the waitress if she thought we would have time for starter and main course. She was extremely helpful and understanding and went to check with the kitchen before coming back to say they would do their best for us.Starters came out promptly - piping hot calamari and something with goats cheese. When the waitress came to see if we were finished, she made a point of saying she didn't want to rush us but was aware we were watching the clock.Main course was not too much of a wait - we both had burgers which were tasty in themselves (although a bit red in the middle for our taste) but unfortunately had a sauce on as well as the blue cheese which we felt did not work together and was not very pleasant. The chips were more like chunks of potato, and although not wishing to do down places which make their own rather than just fry McCains, they were not really the sort of chips you expect to go with a burger and were not crispy at all.Overall, 5 stars for Christine (the waitress) but 3 star rating because of the main course.

My husband and I were staying at the Parsonage Hotel and decided to eat our evening meal here which is a short walk from the Hotel. The walk was a little on the dangerous side as you have to cross the A19 (no crossing and railing so far up the opposite side of the road limits places to cross over) and then the walk on the main street is very dark - luckily my husband had a torch on his mobile which helped! The pub has a pleasant interior and homely fire and it's not too big. We started off with a couple of drinks, I had a G&T and my husband a pint of Amstel which came to £9.45 - quite expensive! The pint was £3.95 so not too badly priced - which made the G&T very expensive! We had starters of breaded garlic mushrooms with salad garnish at £5.25 each - and was really good. My husband opted for the mixed grill which was BIG - two eggs, two sausages, lamb steak, beef steak, gammon, mushrooms and portion of chips at £14.95 whilst I opted for the pork steak with black pudding with veg, again a very generous size at £10.25. We couldn't manage to eat it all which was a shame because the chips were really good and so were our main meals. Needless to say we couldn't mange pudding! The pub has free WiFi but after asking a young waitress about how to log into it and that there were two different ones (only one appeared on our phone which was the wrong on!) we gave up on the WiFi. That said the Staff were all very pleasant and the pub comfortable to dine in.

We stayed at the Black Bull for one night. It's not given away - our double room with breakfast was £100. We arrived on Sunday night at 7.30 after a 4 1/2 hour drive from London to discover that the kitchen closes at 7pm on a Sunday. Since someone had called us earlier in the day to see what time we were checking in, you might have thought they would mention this to us. So, after a long journey, we had to find somewhere else to eat. The room: its fine, but that's about it. Terrible pillows, thin duvet, cheap coffee and tea sachets, no flannels, no long mirror, bedside light not working (turned out it wasn't plugged in), nowhere to put wash bags in the bathroom except on the floor. Breakfast: firstly, it's only between 8 and 9. That's useless for a lot of people. For us, just annoying - we had a rare morning off where we didn't need to be in a hurry but had to be down before 9. There is no cooked breakfast option. I don't know about you but for us one of the great things about staying in a pub with rooms should be a cracking cooked breakfast. Especially at these prices. Black Bull please note: just because you put something in a Kilner jar it doesn't make it good. No natural yoghurt which makes the muesli and yoghurt option wrong, no runny honey, three bought in muffins under a glass dome. The coffee: pleased to see a Cafetiere arrive at the table, only to find to our great amusement that there wasn't a coffee ground in it. It contained weak, undrinkable, dishwater - instant coffee I would think. We changed our order to tea. Can I suggest that the owners go and stay in a few similarly priced places and see what people are getting elsewhere. We paid £20 less in Warwickshire on Friday night and it was fabulous.

Whilst staying at the Parsonage Hotel nearby, we decided to have one of our evening meals at The black Bull which is only a short stroll from the hotel. We made a booking for 8.15 and on arrival found the pub to be about half full. It was a pleasant ambience with a large fire blazing at one end of the premises and the whole place being well lit and comfortable. We shared a Whitebait starter and then choose our main meals - one from the menu and one from the 'specials' board. The food arrived and where clearly portions on the larger side and the food was well prepared and the service good.We enjoyed our evening and would recommend it to others.

Visited for dinner on a friend's recommendation and was more than impressed by the surroundings and menu choices. This was a Tuesday evening and the place was busy with both resident and non- resident diners. All the staff were very friendly and the service very good.I understand that it has recently been refurbished and it is a good mix of clean modern, but still keeps some of the original features,I had the Whitby scampi; the first mouthful told me how fresh this was (I could taste the sea water), my friend had the homemade steak pie - what a plateful she got. Both were served with chips and a selection of vegetables. Both meals and a coup,e of glasses of wine each came to £37 - excellent value for the quality of food we got.

Visited here for Sunday lunch with my wife. Have been here many years ago and I have to say the new lay out is excellent. We were given a table in a small alcove which seemed a bit detached but okay. Noticed on arrival, many customers arriving at the same time and the one bar staff was over worked but did manage to cope although quite slowly. Had to get the menu from the bar as there is nothing on the able. We both ordered the roast Beef Sunday lunch and wow, we were served within 7 minutes.!!! The plates were quite hot, the presentation leaves a lot to be desired as everything was stacked on top of each other, potatoes at the bottom were extremely hot, which made me suspect the meals are pre prepared, bearing in mind other customers who ordered something other than the Sunday meal had to wait quit some time for their food, plus their vegetables came on side plates. I know we asked for beef well done but you could tell the meat had not been freshly sliced and it was a bit tough. There are I think 12 tables seating between 2 and up to 6 places all of which were full but only two serving staff which again made service slow for others and convinced me more that the roast dinner was ready beforehand. Also getting the staff attention to get the dessert menu was a drag. That said that menu was offering a good selection but there was nothing that stands out. Value wise I think the prices are quite fair, but being people who like to sunday lunch out, this does not come top of the pile, so sorry guys won't be back in a hurry

I'm a little late writing this review but couldn't not write one to share the great experience we had at the Black Bull. I popped in to have a look when we were looking for somewhere to have my dads 70th birthday meal. The lovely lady that I spoke to mentioned they also had a separate dining room we could use if we wished. I had a look and it was ideal for our party of 12 (but could take more than that) particularly as we had 4 children in our party so we wouldn't have to worry about them wandering around etc. She added we could decorate the room if we wished which was great. On the day the food was very good and the service was excellent. In particular the young lady who seemed to be in charge couldn't do enough to help. Just what we needed for our dads birthday celebration, it really couldn't have been better and I was so grateful that everything went so well. Very reasonable prices too. I would highly recommend the Black Bull, especially the small separate dining area if you are having a small group function.

The staff were more than helpful and the menu was terrific and also had daily specials available. The food arrived and was fantastic. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. Definitely worth a visit

Visited with brother and his wife who have never been before, booked in advance as lovely evening but were plenty of tables free when we arrived, menu and specials offered to us, the food was very nice when it came but a new girl, hadn't asked what we required vegetable wise so a slight delay but it didn't spoil the meal. Presented well and enjoyed by all, only criticism not of the food but the table set for four was on the small side and the vegetables when they did arrived involved us juggling glasses etc around to accommodate the extra dishes

On the positive side this is a bright and airy pub with plenty of tables not too close to each other. The menu is varied with veggie choices available all at reasonable prices. The staff are all pleasant and politeOn the downside - the car park is only small and we had to park on the narrow street outside. Went on a relatively quiet Friday night but it took 40 mins from ordering to receiving our meals (none of which were particularly elaborate) which was disappointing. Our food when it was served was piping hot and as described on the menu However the cottage pie was a little bland with the mashed potato topping too soggy. Our friends meals looked much more appetising.I have eaten here a few times in the last couple of months and in the past the food was faultless so perhaps it was just a bad choice on the night. The delay in being served has been the case at an earlier visit and is something that needs to be addressed. Will probably come back again to give it another try but perhaps the sister pub "The Windmill" at Dunnington is a better option.

We used to visit the Black Bull much more regularly and hadn't been for a few years. We had a good selection to choose from and opted for a special from the board. (A black pudding and pork burger) it was lovely and just what we were after. Perhaps the only slightly negative comment I could make was that it took a little longer than I might have anticipated in view of how quiet it seemed. However it was a perfectly acceptable period of time to wait for good food and I would not hesitate in recommending a visit. I'm sure we will be returning again soon.

We visited here for the first time and were impressed by the quaint location and by the two open fires. The staff were really friendly. The pub was lovely inside but we did wonder why we were the only customers...then we ordered some food. I was very disappointed with the food. The creamy garlic mushrooms looked and tasted like they came out of a tin, the steak was very undercooked, but I have to say the dessert was delicious. I asked the waiter for my meal to be served a specific way (no chips, no onion rings, etc, with the steak and no dressing on the salad) and this information either wasn't relayed to the kitchen or they didn't follow the instructions. My meal came with everything I didn't want and the salad had dressing on it. The steak was too rare so I just ate the cooked bits around the edges, but they did deduct it from the bill.My 11 year old ordered "cheese on toast" but when it came it had olives, onions and peppers on it - I had to send it back and order a plain cheese on toast. To be fair it does say "posh cheese on toast" on the menu but I feel the waiter should have said what that meant, especially when a child is ordering it (as they didn't have a kids menu).

My wife and I ( mid 40s) chanced upon this place for a meal. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was amongst the best we have had for a long time and very good value for money. The set up is spacious and clean and nicely presented with a real fire burning away in the middle. Nothing was too much for the staff and this was a perfect start to our New Year's Eve.Will definitely return.

DAUGHTER DIDNT GET FOOD Absolutely discusted a member of staff can treat a 15 year old girl and her friend in this manner, she got soft drinks by 1 member of staff, then kicked out my another who was very rude. Just told my daughter she would get a refund(given no proof of this either, hopefully can track this through her app) She wasn't aware u had to be with an adult just for soft drinks and some food and wasn't explained this until just told to leave. ABSOLUTELY DISCUSTED IN SERVICE MY STAFF MEMBER, shouldn't treat anyone like that especially a child
