Visited this pub last night with some friends who live local. It’s a gorgeous village pub and the staff and customers are really friendly. I was made to feel really welcome and would definitely recommend this pleasant hidden gem.

We recently moved to the village and love the pub itself but the landlady makes you feel really intimidated sitting in the ‘best seat, in the house with her feet up looking everyone up and down, not professional or welcoming at all. It is supposed to be a restaurant and both times we have been there has been no food, with no explanation either in the bar or on their website. Won’t be heading back anytime soon.

We needed a dog friendly pub/restaurant as a close friend of the family has a dog and limits us to where we can eat out. Every time we have been we have been made to feel welcome and the food has been great especially the pizzas which the kids love. The range of ale on offer is also worth a visit. Good food, friendly staff and cozy atmosphere 👍🏼👍🏼

I am so pleased to have a dog-friendly local. I don't understand some of the other reviews 'dogs shouldn't be in a place that serves food' are we going to ban them from houses? Most pubs aren't dog friendly it isn't as if you'd struggle to find one that doesn't allow them in. Everyone I know loves the food here-I am vegan and my only slight gripe is that they don't have anything vegan on the menu however that's my choice, I bring friends and family here who all love the food. Landlords are fab, staff are friendly and professional, and cosy traditional pubs are not easy to find nowadays. Great history to the pub, and they have jenga and dominoes, and a great beer garden. What isn't to love.

Eaten here a couple of times in the last two weeks. Order from the bar and pay on order. On both occasions the food has been very good with generous portions. Pizzas piping hot and good toppings, both pies very tasty, gammon seemed more like a double portion and sausage and mash with good quality sausage. Hot dog also a big portion with loads of chips and onion rings. Service very good even though the bar was busy. Football was on whilst we were there last time but we were not disturbed and could still chat over dinner. Nice to have somewhere nearby for a good meal at very reasonable prices.

After seeing a Facebook post advertising the Sunday Roast Dinner with obligatory sumptuous food photo my other half and I decided to give The Black Bull a try. First impressions were favourable, a nice looking pub, nice quiet surroundings and an interior that was homely and welcoming. Drinks prices were very reasonable, so far so good. We ordered soup of the day to start (leek and potatoe I believe) and this is where things went downhill. The soup arrived 25 mins after ordering, it was tasteless, bland at best, and the accompanying 'crusty bread' was actually still defrosting when it reached our table..... We let this pass, the Sunday roast was after all what we came for. So..... 40 more minutes passed and it arrived. Beef for the wife, pork for myself, except mine was beef too. The waitress apologised however and changed it, advising she had picked the wrong one up! So my pork dinner arrived, looking nothing like the obligatory photo, the Yorkshire pudding was undercooked, still eggy and flatter than a watered down pint from the local. To add insult to injury it was stone cold, inedible! I let the waitress know who took it away without apology only to come back 3 mins later with the same plate of food..... microwaved..... cold on the outside and now just say warm in the middle. This was the final straw..... I couldn't eat it, I got my money back! Needless to say I wont be returning and wouldn't personally recommend eating here to anyone else. That however is up to you to decide.

Called in with family and told a member of staff there was no soap in the gents toilets. Took my son in 40 mins later and still no soap. How about getting priorities right. Soap before serving drinks?. My wife also said there was no toilet roll in the ladies, she had to borrow a tissue from a stranger that was in the toilet. The hand drier in the ladies wasn't working in there either she said. Not good enough.

We have started visiting this pub whilst awaiting our takeaway from Bangla Restaurant (opposite). Friendly clientele with a good range of real ales and lagers. Seems lively with pool table, machines and TV screens. Always feel welcome and nice to see the no swearing notices and range of theme nights.Only 'shame' is the stating of the car park not to be used by Bangla clients. With restaurant not serving alcohol a spirit of co-operatoin between the two establishments could have mutual benefit.

Myself and 4 others went here after visiting family for the day. The food here is absolutely amazing and it was hard to choose what to order but we will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. We loved the fact it was split so we could bring the dog and sit on 1 side. The service was amazing and our servers couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. This place definitely deserves a 5*.

I have been to the Black Bull on a number of occasions for meals, events, etc. The atmosphere is always nice and the staff and other customers are always friendly. There is an upstairs function room that can be hired for events such as birthdays, weddings, etc, but be aware it is quite small so I wouldn't recommend it for a large crowd. The few times I have come here to eat the food has always been excellent and relatively cheap.I would definitely recommend popping in here for a drink and something to eat.

I booked the upstairs room at the Black Bull to throw a Surprise party for my Fiancé James' 30th. We all had a fantastic time and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. We were really looked after and had such a memorable evening. Thank You! I definitely recommend booking the space for a party/christening etc. The room hire was very cheap and had a lot of character :)

Food is good, only once did I have to complain because the veg were not cooked enough, did not pay for food or drinks that day. They try to use their imagination with the menu, can't fault them for that. Not "fine dining " , but good wholesome food nonetheless!Pub is also dog friendly, which is a boost.

Been here a couple of times, and it isn't a bad pub at all. The staff I find very friendly, but clientelle, a couple of weirdos, and probably the only pub where I have just had a random comment given in my direction from what I can call, the village idiot. Saying that, I don't think I have been to a pub in Birstall over the last 25 years and there hasn't been characters let's say. Nice setting, it is tucked away a bit and away from the centre of town. Hidden behind the old church and graveyard, I would recommend popping in for a nice pint.

In the heart of Bronte Country, in the charming West Yorkshire village of Birstall (birthplace of Joseph Priestly) which dates back to the 7th Century, this 400 year old pub nestles beside the beautiful St Peter's Church and its picturesque cemetery where you can find the grave of Ellen Nussey, close friend of the Brontes and a sweet little fishing pond just yards away. Upstairs the old court room is still intact and well worth a look. You'll receive a friendly Yorkshire welcome from the locals and enjoy the regularly changing guest beers. The food is high quality, tasty, traditional British pub grub. Steak and Ale pie with huge, crispy, fluffy chips is my favourite. There's live music from local entertainers on Thursdays and a good quiz on Mondays. If you want an insiders glimpse of proper Yorkshire hospitality with plenty of history thrown in you need look no further.

We were staying at the hotel nearby so visited the Nags Head for drinks / tea. I’m coeliac. They stock gluten free lager by the bottle so we sat outside in the sunshine admiring the view of the pub whilst having a couple of drinks. Our meal was fantastic! Piping hot, delicious hunters chicken and chips ( gluten free) partner had the gammon and chips also delicious 🤤 The only thing I would suggest is to have a separate gluten free menu. Or add gf symbols on the current menu. The process to order gluten free is you’re handed a tablet and you have to enter your preferences. Great customer service , lovely pub. Definitely recommend

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

We were so looking forward to our romantic valentine's evening. Sadly the previous reviewer has said most of it for us. Extortionately expensive, to be honest, for actually a less than mediocre meal which was not particularly enjoyable. It was obvious, from the occasional groans, the that something was very very wrong in the kitchen, even though front of house staff attemped to cover the cracks with gracious service. Also, yes it was far too cold. Have had lunch several times in this beautiful building, which have been very pleasant, although they really do need to sort out the heating problem.
