Visited the Black Bull a couple of times for evening meals during our recent holiday to Reeth. Both meals were very good, served prompt and the staff were very friendly. Both fires were lit making it a very cosy feel. Had a mulled cider on one occasion which was very tasty and warming after a long walk. Would definitely visit again when in the area.

We visit this pub every time we are on holiday - it’s something we really look forward to but honestly I felt I had to say something about the meal we had here last week. We ordered 5 light meals which were delivered promptly but the kids mozzarella sticks (£10!) were like rubber they were so overcooked and the two sandwiches were so burnt they were literally black - mum couldn’t eat hers as it tasted like charcoal. The chef should never have sent them out, we’d have rather waited while they were recooked. Also worth mentioning that the beef and blue cheese sandwich has onion chutney in it which was not on the menu - delicious, but I have a mild onion allergy and it caused me discomfort for the rest of the day/night. We will be coming back because it really is like a home from home and we can’t praise the young lady serving drinks enough - she was lovely - we just hope the food standard improves by our next visit.

We have known the Black Bull for many years now and have been customers several times. This was a visit to the popular Sunday carvery. The food was excellent, lovely veg, tatty’s and Yorkshire puddings. I am a vegetarian so did not partake of the meat; instead the staff (pre-booked) provided me with vegetarian gravy and soya sausages, all lovely. My husband partook of the meat and we both enjoyed the food very much.

Lovely pub with roaring fires and very dog friendly, although the music choice was a bit interesting! The food wasn’t great, we got burgers and had to ask for extra Brie as you couldn’t see it on my burger! The burger was dry and we paid £20 for the privilege. The bar man was a bit standoffish, not engaging, even when we asked about the upside down sign. It is the only place really to eat on an evening in Reeth (other than the higher end restaurant in the hotel) and you can tell. Disappointing

After reading great reviews of the Black Bull, we found it a disappointment. Advice to future diners... do not order the King Prawns... there is nothing King about them. They were the tiniest shrimp I've ever been served. Barely a mouthful in the whole 2 skewers. We brought it to there attention and all we got was a "sorry", and a refusal to take the 10 pounds off the bill. Save yourself from getting ripped off. There are other good establishments in Reeth.

The bartender gratuitously insulted me, saying it must be hard for Americans to walk the Coast to Coast because we drive everywhere in our cars, to Taco Bell and Burger King. His tone was not joking, but rather mocking. But the food was decent and they have a dietary inclusive menu.

Don't come expecting a gourmet experience, but this place serves excellent pub food, in large quantities. My fish and chips order came out as a giant piece of battered cod that looked like a beached whale across my plat. My husband's hamburger was stacked too high to actually bite into (bless the British, they never quite got the hang of how a burger is supposed to work). And all of it was well prepared and it the spot after a long day of walking the Herriot Way. Best of all - the fish and chips was available gluten free! Made my day!

Had an evening meal here, food was average, but 'home cooked' chips were burnt brown and not at all good. Worst part is however the price sheet does NOT include a 10% service charge. Apparently this is stated at the bottom of the menu, but I didn't spot it. This makes the prices pretty expensive for what you get, and I personally think this is sharp practice - I don't know any other pubs that add a separate service charge. That might be common in posh restaurants but certainly not for pub food.

Had a wonderful meal last night. The food was delicious and the service top notch. We arrived quite late, but they were able to squeeze us in last minute. We called in for Sunday lunch after a drive through the beautiful area of Swaledale. It is set on the edge of the village green with a fantastic view of the countryside from the front beer garden. The Sunday lunch was really nice and being a carvery meant that you had a decent portion. The staff were friendly and I would recommend this pub to anyone in the area.

Ate in the restaurant which was nice and pleasant, with a relaxed atmosphere. Hand one of the specials, which was presented really well, but the lamb was a little tough. Had crumble for dessert and to be honest, expected more crumble and custard for the price paid. Looks a little rundown from the outside. Overall, a pleasant enough night, but if I’m honest, a little overpriced for what you get.

We have visited Reeth & The Black Bull many times. We always enjoy coming here great atmosphere, lovely fires & people. Sadly this visit wasn’t the best. We booked knowing it was a curry night but were told on booking there would be a basic menu too. In arrival we were told there was only curry available. After a day walking we were really ready for bangers and mash or a pie. No worries we chose the curry. The only way I can describe it was similar to a curry my mum would have tried making for the first time in 1977. It was sadly pretty inedible. It won’t put us off returning though, however, please can we suggest sticking to your normal menu or get help making something out of your repertoire. We’ll be back though.

We went for lunch. A welcoming and friendly barman. Lovely open fire . But food was awful. We got two very small ciabatta rolls that looked like they’d been squashed in a toasty maker. I had cheese and tomato and there was definitely no sign of any fresh tomato. Tasted more like very processed tomato purée. The salad was appalling. A few bits of salad leaves and piles of red onion. No attention had been payed to how the food looked on the plate. To add insult to injury they then charged us £8.95 each. The waitress neither smiled or said anything to us and just plonked the food on the table. Terrible service. I just wish I had complained before I left. Worst pub lunch we’ve had during our stay in North Yorkshire!

If you are a biker, forget this place. Upon my arrival, at 19.30, I ordered a drink and asked to order food to be told that they were fully booked...there were six people in the place, I counted them. No apology or any hint of friendliness. Just a straight forward no. I went to the pub which is adjacent to this place, the name escapes me, and they couldn't have been more helpful, even though they had just stopped taking orders when I arrived. As for The Black Bull Hotel, the place remained virtually empty for the rest of the evening which has cast more that a hint of doubt upon his claims that they were fully booked. This has really hacked me off as I had ridden up to Reeth thinking that I would have a pleasant weekend, I didn't and left the following day.

Came here whilst on a driving tour of the Dale's,and on the basis of trip advisor reviews. Sat outside and enjoyed good local beers. Ordered a ham and tomato and an egg and cress roll. Ordered and told they could not put any orders through for 10 mins due to the volume of orders. Order was put through 20 minutes later. 10 mins after this staff Informed us "sorry ham is unavailable " changed to a cheese and tomato (sliced tomato) no problem says bar staff! 35 mins later rolls arrive egg minus CRESS and cheese with fresh tomato which actually was cheese and tomato chutney. After waiting for our order for so long was disappointed. Will not revisit for food if in the area.

We visited the Black Bull twice during our stay in Reeth and thoroughly enjoyed both meals, Providing you don’t have a dog with you meals are served in a light and airy restaurant, set a good distance from the very busy bar (where dogs are permitted). I had the ribs which were amazing and scampi with “posh peas” and fabulous home made chips. My husband ordered the steak pudding which though not huge was crammed with meat - no fat at all and served with a jug of delicious gravy. We knew that a service charge of 10% would be added but to be honest we would have tipped at least that anyhow as all staff were great.

What a perfect dining experience! From the moment we arrived we knew we were going to have a good night. We were greeted warmly and our dietary requirements were known and acknowledged. We were offered drinks to be taken to our table and provided with our menus. At our lovely corner table we were seated and provided with water. Shortly after our order was taken and the waitress also knew of our dietary requirements without us having to say anything. The food arrived in a timely manner - it was exactly as ordered, was hot and very tasty. Several times during the meal we were approached by different waiters to see if we needed anything more, if we were happy etc. Even when we left, we ran into the manager in the car park and he was genuinely interested and happy that we had a nice evening. What a brilliantly run hotel restaurant! Highly recommend it.

Fantastic stay again at The Bull. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and the food out of this world. I had the soup of the day which was cauliflower and blue cheese with gluten free bread. Wonderful atmosphere pub, with two real fires, and the fabulous Old Peculier on draft. Food a cut above most pubs, we had an excellent crusted haddock and a steak and kidney pudding. The TVs - a blight in any pub and a tragedy in an atmospheric one like this - were on the second time we visited, so we decided to eat elsewhere. However, would generally recommend this place. One negative - a 10% service charge added to food bill, which is a bit much if you're sitting at a normal pub table as opposed to the restaurant - and was still levied even though they forgot to serve our starter!

We popped in for a drink in September an booked a table for the evening. We received a warm welcome on both occasions. The Black Bull is a lovely old building which has blended contemporary pursuits (pool table etc) in characterful but tired building. Food...

We stayed in Reeth for a few nights and ate here for two of them. The food is great. Good pub food, massive portions, great choice and superb sticky toffee pudding! Great service and COVID safe. Worth a visit.

Great Sunday lunch. Staff fantastic and very Covid aware. We both had the roast pork dinner followed by rhubarb and apple crumble with custard. Accompanied by a couple of pints of real ale , what more could you ask for.

I had a lovely meal here with other Coast-2-Coast walkers - their Sunday Roast Beef has a well justified reputation and was delicious. A great place also to meet up after a long walk to share a beer at the front of the pub, overlooking...

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
