Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

Amazing cafe with fantastic food. We were four friends came to visit the Druid's temple and after returning we thought of having some food. The staff was attentive and efficient. We got few sandwiches and coffee the portions were massive, but all the food was really good quality and tasty. I would highly recommend this place.

Went for a couple burgers tonight, some positives first, staff were lovely, place was lovely, enjoyed all the Lucy Pittway art on the walls, .................. negatives, ordered 2 burgers, the brioche buns were simply inedible, rock hard, toasted to S--t, they said they could not do fries, so they served some potato salad, unfortunately this was hard, not al dente, uncooked, hard, not edible, 2 x very disappointed customers, we could wait to get out the place,

Visited these guys whilst we were visiting the druids temple nearby; we saw the signs adjoining the car park that we used. The weather was good so we sat outside & enjoyed the view. The only let down was that the guy that served us told us that he couldn't make hot chocolate with non-dairy milk - I had tea with oat milk instead. Good choice & not too expensive.

Have been in the area before so the cafe was on my visit list. Arrived about 11am . Was disapointed so see little in the way of Gluten Free offerings with the exception of toast. I had the porriage which was tepid. I know I could of sent it back but couldn't be bothered as we had already had a wait. However the coffee was good. This place could be great but need the get the basics right i.e hot food and more offerings for people with food intolerances.

Mid-Week Couples Retreat - This is a fabulous 2 night stay offer at Bivouac in a luxurious Yurt with breathtaking views and scenery. Everything you need is to hand and the fire keeps the yurt warm and toasty. If you are unfortunate to have windy weather i recommend ear plugs as the yurt can flap a bit. On a clear night the stars are amazing. The local walks are stunning. This deal includes, 2 nights, continental breakfast, a bottle of prosecco a two course meal at Swinton Terrace restaurant with lift transfers and a morning or afternoon in the spa on both days. The Bivouac cafe provides great food but is only open to 5pm weekdays. Masham provides a range of pubs, i recommend the White Bear if you are not choosing to eat at Swinton Park Hotel. Or use the facilities st Bivouac and cook your own dinner. This is a unique experience and something different, I really recommend this stay.

We arrived at Swinton Bivouac Site early, as we planned to explore the grounds prior to checking in. We arrived in time to have lunch. The food was amazing. At the time they were working with a limited menu due to a recent fire in the kitchen. The baked goods were delicious (I believe they were brought down from the Hotel). Great selection of drinks both hot and cold. No issues with animals either. There was a water dish outside for our dog and picnic tables to sit out outside weather permitting, are tables inside where you could bring your pet in. The staff were lovely and so helpful on giving us information about the surrounding area. First Class Cafe!!

We sat in the Autumn sun outside for lunch - I had the special chicken burger which was sizeable and tasty - though a farm hen seemed a bit too interested in trying to share my meal! Indoor is modern, and there's a downstairs area with some toys etc that young kids might enjoy. There's also a couple of small bits of play equipment outside (again, for younger kids). We walked up here from Swinton Estate hotel, which took about an hour each way with one section through slightly overgrown nettles (so don't wear shorts).

Just came to have a look around but was drawn into the Bivouac café out of intrigue as it has been so cleverly designed to have curiosities in every corner. Inside the cafe is bright and airy with colourful pastel furniture . A stunning chandelier that looks like it may have been up-cycled from some ancient farming apparatus and Edison bulbs. Outside the view is spectacular, panoramic and breathtaking. I had the bacon burger which was a very hearty size that would satiate the most ravenous of walker and possibly the nicest coffee I have ever tasted! (Meeko apparently) Staff were wonderful, friendly and super efficient, multitasking between serving and gently ushering a stubborn chicken out, Tracy especially was great. If you are looking for a great lunch in quirky but beautiful surroundings with delicious coffee (and friendly chickens) this is the place!!

Four of us stopped off for a snack and a brew after visiting druids temple Three cups of tea, two cream/jam scones, one shortbread and a panini came to nearly £30. Fair enough if it was quality but very overpriced especially when the scones were dry and squirty UHT cream instead of real whipped/clotted cream!

The cafe here has no competition and in certain areas that really shows. The food is distinctly average but very expensive, the staffing levels are very much on the low side, the staff that are there look like they'd prefer not to be and if you get everything that you ordered then you've done very well. But the surroundings are lovely if the weather is good and you can sit outside.

We popped in for some lunch after a walk around Druid’s Temple. The location is lovely and the cafe is really pretty- first impressions were good. Staff said we could sit in the family area with the toys as we had our little girl with us. The cafe was so cold we had to keep our coats on. The children’s area was scruffy and the few toys broken and dirty. The menu looked nice with a good variety so we ordered the afternoon tea with some chips. It took 15 minutes to bring some cold drinks. When the afternoon tea arrived we were less than impressed. We were told there wasn’t any sausage rolls or scotch eggs so we had been given an extra scone. Everything was shop bought, stale and stodgy. Not what you expect for £16 per person! We sent our sandwich’s back as the bread was so hard. The chips just tasted of oil and the sauces were cheap and tasteless. It is such a shame because the cafe has so much potential! It really lets down the Swinton name.

Finally made it, we had a lovely panini outside and were attacked by wasps, no fault of the cafe. The sandwiches were very well presented with a well dressed salad and the coffee was good, my partners Cappuccino was not so great, more like a flat white with foam. The menu was varied and different to the usual fare, we went back later in the week and the summer menu had ended and a new smaller menu was in place, still good food just not the choice from before. We will return, it’s in an area we love and it’s another good cafe in an area rich with good eateries.

This is the most beautiful location and about my 5th day in various accommodation. Bunk barn was great but would benefit from a fridge being added. Noticeable changes though were a lack of staff and a completely lacking evening menu. Despite booking a table for 6 ladies we were presented with the lunch menu with either sausage & mash (not a lot of & lumpy) or a beef burger. After a 12 mile walk we expected and wanted a better choice. With previous experiences of dinner being fabulous this was extremely disappointing. On Friday our friends had other guests going up to them with issues as they couldn’t find any staff. The change of menu and cut backs in staff showed and for the prices charged you simply won’t get away with this, guests will go elsewhere.

Spectacular location. Druids temple and surrounding walks are really great. Stayed at the hotel so can't comment on self catering. Cafe has great atmosphere, love decor and layout. Honest review on food and service: ordered hot ploughman' for 2 visited at 3.30pm in late June as it was the only hot food available. Large portions with lovely cheese and ham on top of large whole baguette which would have been better sliced. Unfortunately it was completely ruined by an unbelievably huge amount of chutney slathered under the ham. One plate was literally swimming in it. Spoke to staff about it when paying and was told "oh yes he does get carried away with the chutney" cakes were good but over priced. Overall impression was that the running of the place needs tightening up. After eating we went for a walk and when we returned to collect car cafe was closed. We noticed a pile of dishes and cups left on a table outside to fester overnight. Pity as this place could be amazing.

VERY tasty but not like any ploughmans I have come across before. It is worth noting that they close at 5 and that last orders for food and drinks is earlier than this depending on how busy they are.If we are ever back in the area we would definitely eat there again.

Had a little stop off here in-between staying over at The Yorke Arms and a bit of shooting. Both myself and the missus were really impressed with the location and the food was quick, tasty and a good price. Great for all the family and also very dog friendly which is always good. We really must apologise again though to the owners for the little accident our young Cocker had (he decided to have a wee on the door mat), we really don't know why he did that especially after you commenting on how well behaved he was!! Thank you for being so understanding and we will certainly be back again when next in the area!

We had lunch in the café whilst doing a walk which started at the Druids Temple (Short Scenic Walks in Lower Wensleydale by Paul Hannon walk no. 13). We are local to the area but this was the first time we had visited the café and the food was lovely particularly the cheese savoury and chilli jam sandwich. A good and varied menu to choose from and I had a pot of tea and was offered a refill free of charge. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

We were staying at a Lodge in the woods and ate at the Bivouac cafe one evening. The atmosphere is so inclusive. If you are lucky you will meet the cockerpoo in the cafe or the puppy pug in reception, both well behaved. Kids have a play area which they can visit when bored of sitting at table with adults. There was live music on the Friday night when we went for a drink, but we ate on the Saturday night. The kids had freshly cooked chicken in a buttermilk batter while my husband and I had pies which were lovely - not mass produced and bought in. The only negative was the cider had sold out so I had a glass of Malbec which was poor, but my husband was very pleased with his beer.

We did a nine mile walk from Masham and a visit to the temple was part of the walk. It was a nice surprise to find the folly in the middle of the wood. Very peaceful place. We didn't visit the café but heard good reports about it. Well worth a visit

We walked here from Swinton Park Hotel during a two-night stay to celebrate our anniversary. The Bivouac exceeded expectations, being so nicely converted and furnished - practical, fun and pretty. It was a lovely day so we sat outside at one of the painted picnic tables. There were sandwiches, soup and cakes available. We both had pea and mint soup, which was outstanding. Plus a beer - it is licensed. The cakes looked tasty but we'd had a late breakfast so didn't have room. Friday night bbqs with live music were advertised; this would be fun if you were staying at the Bivouac - we saw the yurts in a field next-door and there's a bunkhouse on site, plus lodges a few hundred yards away. Wanted to look at the accommodation but it was all full. Would love to come back and stay here.

Very friendly service. Cakes looked amazing but we had just eaten breakfast. Had a mocha coffee that was a little too sweet for me but we would definitely visit again and try some cake!

We stopped in a couple of woodland lodges for a weekend away. They are very much off-grid, and you do feel like you are getting away from it all. The cafe and shower block were of a high standard and meant you didn't have to rough it.

we enjoyed the Druid's Temple, and were looking forward to a cuppa, as were another couple we met. The views over the valley were lovely, and the toilets clean. Shame they were closed.

Stayed as a group of 12 in the bunkbarn and it was ideal for what we needed. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Had an evening meal and breakfast in the cafe plus a pack lunch and all the food was of the highest quality. The bathroom facilities were well maintained and situated in an ideal location compared to the bunk barn.

Mandy and Sophie were lovely hosts at lunchtime. I was on a Birds of Prey photography workshop from Swinton Park birds of prey, with a small group of photographers. Upon arrival we were shown to our seats. Tea was served and shortly afterwrds our lunch arrived. It consisted of a bowl of delicious spicy tomato soup, egg mayonnaise roll served with chips. Afterwards we were offered a selection of home made cakes, which were truly delicious. The building is quirkily decorated and seating is also offered outside. I can highly recommend for lunch if your in the area.

I enjoyed a really lovely stay in the yurts, catching up with old friends. The setting is peaceful and idyllic. Amazing birdsong and lovely views across the valley. The yurts were well equipped and very comfortable and warm. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The food in the restaurant was pretty average for the price, which was a shame. I was expecting a bit more of a selection and what was on offer was a bit overpriced, however, this is the only negative of our stay. I will return with my family in the future and it's a great place to retreat from the world!

I took my family of 7 adults (29 to 66) away for a team bonding weekend. 2 nights. Sadly we could not all stay in the same style of accommodation as there were already bookings in January! So we had two Yurts and two Shacks. Great accommodation, really well appointed and tastefully done. A nice cafe selling simple yet tasty food. Great, friendly staff too. Lovely location with some superb walks. We cooked our own meal in the shacks on Friday night and cooked steaks on the fire pit on Saturday night. The log burners are very effective, but you do need to get them on, especially in the yurts! We had a hot shower the following morning in the shack which was great. It is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors at a more mature age! Would recommend it.

This place just has a magical feel to me. I love all the interior decoration, and the views are amazing. We had good food served by friendly staff. The family seating downstairs meant we could relax while our 2 year old was happy playing. If I didn't have a newborn with me I would have happily stayed longer for a glass of wine! I've just read some of the more negative reviews saying there was a long wait. We didn't wait long at all and I have total empathy as we also own a cafe in a small north Yorkshire village and considering the location of Bivouac it must be so hard to predict how busy they will. I wish people would have more patience - small business need supporting. This place is in an amazing location, and serves fresh home made food. My only comment would be as a vegetarian I wouldn't have minded a couple more options, but we will definitely be back.

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Limited menu…pie tasted as I if it had been warmed up .. hard crust .. only softened by the amount of gravy on the plate … my fault for . not asking for the gravy to be seperate … sat on a pipped portion of potato and one carrot
