Called into the village for the first time on Tuesday and it would have been rude not to Sample the food. My husband ordered the burger and I had the lasagne washed down with a lovely pint. Very friendly warm welcome and prices are very reasonable for such lovely quality food. We would recommend a visit as it is very hard to find good food in such a lovely village location. We hope to visit again soon.

Just had a fabulous valentine takeaway meal for 2, including 2 sausages for the dogs and a bottle of Prosecco. Food was hot, tasty and really well presented, even in a card board box. Lovely trio of desserts to try. Not eaten from here before and the new owners have only had it 8 weeks so well done for being so brave . If today’s food is anything to go by, should be a great success . Looking forward to the day we can and eat in the restaurant.

I have had a not so good experience with duck before so decided to give a final try and am so glad I did...the Duck Confetti with the orange jus was succulent. Friend had the mushroom for starter but was a bit salty. His beef main was polished off. He liked his strawberry cheesecake more than the bite of my creme brûlée but I liked my brûlée more 😁

Called in for tea cakes and tea as it is a tea room but heard staff in kitchen moaning about us. Didn’t say anything at the time as didn’t want to upset my friend. We had tried to visit for a meal earlier in week but it was shut when last orders for food are 3.30 and we arrived at 3pm. Considering it has just reopened there is little effort to attract loyal customers.

I have enjoyed many a visit and delighted that I could eat a modestly priced and portioned three course meal in the French bistro style without feeling over full. Thus, each mouthful could be savoured without the duty of getting in off you plate. Thank goodness they are opening again for business on the 15th October 2019. I hope they do not feel compelled to have a menu with the usual 'popular' items of many a pub. A little corner of what I hope remains Europe.

where to start? i have been to the resturant numerous times with family. eash time i have had a terrible meal. as gordon ramsay would say, soup of the day means DAILY CHANGING SOUP!. you dont get given bread with the soup - that costs a further £2.50. the desserts taste store bought - ive had a better gateaux from iceland. we regularly get told that they dont have a certain item, when you only have about 4 menu items is it really that hard to stock it correctly?? the last time i was there i had black mould spots on my fresh tomatoes - so im guessing the current closure was health inspector related. last time i was in i was told by the the old woman who works there whilst sitting and drinking at a pub table to "open that door young girl" i am 29 years old and a paying customer. NEVER DEMAND I DO ANYTHING. and dont patronise me by calling me "little girl" the same woman also refused to give me back my desert spoon as she claimed i could use the long handled tea spoon she had provided. i then saw her put the cutlery into the rack to be redistributed. i had used the fork to try another diners food. so i feel sorry for whomever was given my dirty fork to eat with. everything you ask is too much trouble, and if you dont do something the way they want it doing, you WILL get told off. i look forward to the reply where they slate me and tell me how wrong i am as they have done with every negative review on here.

Arranged a meal with friends and had copied the Weekend Menu off the Le Bistrolecoq website. This was one of the reasons we booked as the weekend menu was good value. Was told by the proprietor that the menu doesn’t exist. No apology and no discount. The food was very nice except the chips were presented already salted and far too much salt for my taste. The service was excellent and the waiter was very polite and chatted to us while making sure everything was okay. Would suggest to the Proprietors that they shut down the website or update appropriately to avoid further misleading customers.

I attended the aforementioned restaurant on the 28th July 2019 alongside my girlfriend and her family, it was a pre booking of 8 people and I shall admit that prior to attending the venue I read the reviews. When I say that I mean I read 30 odd pages. Like they say 'Fail to prepare...prepare to fail'. However I am glad to say that the experiences that others guests appear to have had were NOT the one I received. Indeed my visit was quite good.We first arrived at the venue at approximately 1:10pm, turning off the road into the car park one is immediately greeted by a tarmacked car park lined with a small blue pebble dashed outline, the place is easy enough to find using sat navigation devices. Although the weather was torrential rain, this did not detract from the beauty of the car park. Good so far. There was also enough car parking space for the 3 cars we were using as well as anyone else.We entered the venue and immediately were in the foyer, there was a table with a multitude of tourist information leaflet and local events on for those visiting the area. the toilets are immediately on the right and use the symbols of a gentleman with a monocle and a woman with a Georgian wig as identifiers. Proceeding through the left door into the main part of the premises one is greeted by the quirky table arrangement opposite, don't worry it's a good thing in my view, the tables are downstairs then going upstairs there are balcony view tables to the left and right of the staircase. This is quite unique as I have not encountered this before. Usually a restaurant has all tables on the 1 to 2 floors all in a 90 degree geometrical shape. To the right of this area is the bar area where we found the rest of the party. We were greeted here by a friendly lady in her early 40's (I presume the owner). We were asked what drinks we would like and then given menu's of which to look at the set meals available, she even enquired as to whom the birthday girl was which was a nice touch. What followed was an organisational shambles, for which i would like to apologise to the management on behalf of those I was with. It seems the custom of this establishment is to ask for your order whilst sitting at the bar and then afterwards seating you, that is fine, a business owner should have the right to run their business how they wish. However the shambles I mentioned before was in the form of 3 members of our party of whom have partial deafness and 1 with chronic tinnitus. Hence a lot of re asking and confusion on our part for which, to her credit, the lady was exceptionally patient. I apologise if this caused annoyance and naturally if the party were loud because of these reasons. We were pointed to a table at the top of the stairs in the corner with a balcony view of the lower floor AND the opposite Church. Upon seating myself i was immediately greeted by a wall painting of what I assumed to be a peregrine falcon, don't quote me on that. The ceiling was decorated with a sky painting, with the walls adorned with typical paintings of various places. The chair were comfortable and the table cleaned and adorned with wine glasses, water jug and clean table cloths. Our starters arrived, mine was the soup of the day which, as i was hoping, was French Onion. The soup itself was served with anchor butter and two mini rolls of bread. Immediately I was seized with the strong flavour of the soup, the sweet notes of the onions complimenting the soft, fluffy bread. Portion size was as expected for a starter. There was 1 hiccup when a dish was forgotten but upon reminding the waitress (I believe I overheard her name as 'Claire') the dish was brought in 10 mins, my guest did not mind. She apologised profusely and was polite and for the remainder of the lunch was attentive in delivering dishes and removing glasses and plates that had been done with. After this I was hog tied and ordere....i mean requested by the girlfriend to get her a Pimms and Lemonade. For this I descended the stairs, feeling not unlike the lord of the manor I'll cheekily admit. Whereupon entering the bar I was greeted by 3 patrons and the aforementioned lady. She quickly served me and was polite and friendly, the patrons, one older gentleman in particular wearing a grey suit with a blue handkerchief, also smiled at me. Reassuring me that the place was nice and friendly. If he is a regular hire him as staff, or at least a free drink. Such niceness is rare these days.I ascended the stairs whereupon shortly thereafter the main meals came, I had the Tagine, I have never had this dish before but the immediate tastes of the spices and softness of the vegetables complimented by what i assume is a tomato based sauce was excellent. However, with no offence and from earlier reviews the owners like constructive criticism...I did put 1 turn of the pepper pot in, upon which the flavours were enhanced sevenfold, my mouth experienced an orgy of flavour the likes of which not even Caligula of Rome could best. Owners if you are listening, please politely pass this onto the chef, i do not wish to offend him but I believe 1 turn of the pepper pot in whilst cooking would greatly enhance the dish! the portion size for the mains, especially the 4 beef based dishes were more than decent. After that was cleared away we were presented with the dessert menu, I was not feeling particularly in a dessert mood and therefore elected to have an americano coffee. Which was creamy, hot and melt in the mouth. Milk was brought separately for me to add at my leisure.Afterwards, the father of the family paid the bill for the table and we departed. not before of course I used the bathroom facilities, upon entering the mens one encounters to the left the classic trough urinal, which was quite clean. Similarly there is one toilet cubicle opposite the door as you enter. I note the hot tap did not seem to work on the right sink, but cold water was more than adequate to wash my hands. Though there was no drier, hand towels were provided with a bin there for used ones.Overall A nice encounter. Previous reviews I can see somewhat where they are coming from but I believe they ask far too much for a small family business that wanted to spice up their menu with some exotic dishes. That and people are only human and cannot be mind readers or omnipotent. I would advise those visiting to demonstrate the patience and understanding the lady showed to our party today.

We enjoyed an evening meal at this excellent restaurant earlier in the year, we returned for lunch earlier today. It is such a wonderfully authentic place to unwind and enjoy exceptional food, cooked freshly to perfection. The service is first class, very friendly and efficient. There is nothing not to like about this little piece of France in the middle of beautiful county of Staffordshire. The menu is varied and everyone should be able to find something to their liking, plenty of gluten free options (clearly marked) as well as options for vegetarian and vegan diners. A good range of beers, lagers with a wine menu beautifully matched to the food and all at very reasonable prices. They also have a loyalty card scheme to reward regular visitors which is a great idea. We will return soon. Highly recommended.

We visited on 25th May 2019 and to start I had the French onion soup which is always superb, my husband had the mushrooms in a lovely creamy sauce, both had accompanying crusty bread, our starters were excellent. For mains we both had lamb rump, Dauphinoise potatoes and lovely Mediterranean veg, peppers, courgettes etc. The lamb was delicious, it cut just like butter it was so tender and just so tasty. We finished our meal with a cheese board to share. In summing up our meal was 100% delicious, far better than the usual chain owned restaurants, the food was so fresh and such good quality. Bistro Le Coq never disappoints, such a welcoming, intimate restaurant, well worth a visit, I can't recommend it highly enough!

This really is a little piece of France in the middle of Staffordshire. The whole place has a wonderful informality that evokes an authentic bistro. The service is excellent, unhurried and relaxing. The restaurant is spotlessly clean. The menu offers a very reasonable choice of authentic French food, very reasonably priced for the quality. All dishes can either be Gluten free or adapted to meet gluten intolerance. All freshly made. The food was simply beautiful both in terms of quality and presentation from friendly and attentive (but not obtrusive staff) An excellent wine list again at reasonable prices. We thoroughly enjoyed our first meal at this excellent bistro which combines a village pub and quality restaurant with real style. John, one of the owners was excellent and we will certainly return. On the whole we had a nice meal. My partner is gluten intolerant so it was refreshing to see the amount of GF options. Can't help thinking that the bistro would be better off ditching the French theme as this limits the menu. Some of the French themed meals are a little 1970s. The restaurant could do with a refurb but still has a nice feel about it.

This was my first visit and probably won't bother again. I thought I was in for a real French food evening but it was more an old fashioned idea of a French bistro. The place could do with a good refurbishment and the staff seemed bored. No one smiled or seemed enthusiastic and the range of drinks on offer seem not to have moved with the times. The food was average, my steak was in places tough and dry, in others ok and small for the price. The starter was pate which tasted fine but not exciting and the pot of relish i think was beetroot but as it had no flavour i am not sure plus to only give four very small toast objects (from a packet) to put the pate on was poor. Where was the nice French bread or sourdough? This could be a great place but it seems the owners have lost interest, need to be more up with the current trends (gins!) And give the place an overhaul. A real French bistro would soon attract people from a distance.

On arrival the bar / waiting staff although friendly looked really fed up ( and this didn’t change throughout the evening). Having previously enjoyed ocassional meals at Le Coq, my husband and I had no hesitation in choosing this wonderful bistro as the venue for our Golden Wedding Anniversary celebrations! We contacted the owner, John, several weeks in advance and negotiated a very reasonable 'fixed pice' dinner menu which we were able to send out in advance to our 20 guests. John really couldn't have done more to ensure all that we wanted was provided - from menu to wines to fizz for a toast and was always ready to answer our questions and offer advice. When the evening came it was WONDERFUL! Every detail was attended to, the service was attentive, unobtrusive, and perfectly organised. The food was out of this world! We had been able to book the whole of the upstairs space (overlooking the picturesque village church). The setting is intimate and creative with a French theme and gentle background music. There was no objection to some metalic confetti, a few bubbles, and a speech or two. John had told us that he was not booking anyone else into the restaurant after we had been seated and so we had the full attention of staff and our celebrations didn't detract from the enjoyment of others dining downstairs. At the end of the evening, as we left, I thanked John who said, 'It is always our aim to make a special occasion just what was wanted by our guests', It was a memorable night and we shall be back next year for a similar celebration - for a 70th birthday!

We were a group of 6 looking to try somewhere new. We were warmly greeted on arrival and shown to the bar. The bar was busy with a large group but Pat who was behind the bar was still smiling despite being busy. She apologised for not being able to serve us immediately and thanked us for being patient. Upon being shown to the table were were given a menu full of delights and for someone who is gluten free a fabulous choice of dishes. All the food was delicious and very well presented. The pork, lamb and duck melted in the mouth for the mains. It is not often we have 3 courses when out but we dived in to desserts and were not disappointed. Service was excellent and done with a smile. Perhaps the only comment would be that the mix of duck and blackpudding in the Bon Bons for starter left the duck slightly over powered, but that could just be how it mixed when cooked on the night. The dish was still consumed in full and it certainly would not stop us from trying the starter again. We will be back for more.

We are returning customers and have been happy with food and service.Today we booked for Sunday Lunch for 4 covers.Starters and mains ordered - no problem.Starters - things we had eaten before. No problemMain course 3 beef 1 lamb which carried a £5 supplement. The waitress asked if we required any sauces. Yes please English and French mustard and mint sauce for the lamb. She returned and said they don't have mint sauce !!!! ( come on a mint plant & vinegar or 50p jar from Tesco would do.)We decided to decline dessert and spoke to the owner as we left. He informed us that they make all their own sauces and the French don't do mint !!!! Really!!! Just onion sauceWill not be back which is a shame as I was planning to ask today to book my retirement party there for 20+ covers Poor, arrogant attitude from the owner/manager

We booked a table for 4 for Sunday lunch. The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout. But everything seemed to happen in slow motion. Half an hour for our order to be taken. A further half hour before Starters arrived. A long wait then for the table to be cleared. And a further long wait for the Mains. Food was ok, but not special. We had planned to have Puddings at Bistro Le Coq, but we anticipated a further long delay for their arrival. So we paid and headed home where we enjoyed for home-made brownie and strawberries, with coffees. We have experienced long delays in the past, so our experience wasn't Bistro Le Coq simply just having a bad day. The kitchen needs either more staff, or better systems.

An odd dish thats got something French in it does not make it a French restaurant,a couple of French wines, a couple of pictures on the wall. Altogether very disappointing and then you finish a meal all they have is stewed filter coffee. Not an espresso in sight. Not a piece of gingham, a shutter or a bit of French cafe music. Went on Bastille Day too thinking there would be a of celebration going on. Food was ok and a reasonable price though.

It's been a while since we've been to Bistro le Coq. I believe it's still the same owners but I didn't recognise any of the staff. Edward, behind the bar, and both our waitresses (Teresa was one) were delightful.Sunday lunch offers truly excellent value for money, £12.95 for two courses £16.95 for three. The food was delicious. Vraiment délicieux 10/10!We all had different starters: brie, calamari, mushrooms, soup and all were beautifully presented and tasty. For mains, two had the roast beef (served with Yorkshire pud, nice veg and gravy) one the pork and I had the filet de basa. My fish sauce of green beans, capers, olives and tomatoes was scrumptious. We were all too full for desserts and coffees but I asked if I could have a takeaway cheese. Why does the assiette de fromage have a supplement? £6.95 ! It was nothing special (boring crackers, a few red grapes and not very inspiring cheese) and this really is my only criticism. You're a French bistro, cheese should be the same price as desserts, non?A très bientôt!Merci...

We spend a lot of time in rural France and get fed up with the unimaginative menus - the ubiquitous duck, the goat's cheese salad, bloomin îles flottant. And they have the nerve to sneer at British food! (That might have been true years ago but things have changed). So when someone suggested we go to this French bistro my heart sank. But this is French food with a British gastropub slant and it's great. Good vegetarian options (try finding those in France), lovely well cooked food in very pleasant surroundings with very attentive and friendly service. Prices extremely reasonable too. Can't fault this place and will go again.

What can I say? Firstly half of the menu wasn't available!! I ordered the Toulouse sausage to start.. which I was told 'we haven't served that for months I don't think we have it.. but if we do you can have it. Anyway, they had it, my partner ordered the 'flatbread'. Starters came and the flat bread was a brought in naan bread from a supermarket (nothing French about that) my sausage was luke warm and tasteless. We weren't asked when the starters were cleared how they were.. even thought my plate was still basically full!!! The mains came and they were also awful.. we weren't checked back on.. and when they were cleared the waitress just took the plates and ran off. I had to wave attention to someone else to say 'why weren't we asked how our food was? The service or food hasn't been good' She then got very defensive and said well I'll tell the chef. I saw her run to the other waitress and talk about us. The waitress then came over and confronted us and said 'I did ask you' I was blown away, I couldn't believe how rude that was!! Working in the trade myself at a nearby successful restaurant, I just couldn't believe this.. we were left sat there for 20 minutes. No one came over to us. We went to the woman who looked in charge to tell her our complaints.. for her to argue with us and say 'I can tell you don't eat out much, you can tell you haven't got any money. We then walked off and over over heard the other woman say 'I could tell when they walked in they type of people they were' I've never had such poor service in my life. You don't argue with customers, especially get personal with them! We offered to pay £40.. of the £52 bill, but they wouldn't accept this and argued further 'you've only got £40 that's what it is. Very poor service and food.

The English can't cook properly and Le Coq Bistro does its level best to prove the point. We went en famille yesterday for lunch; my 'Cornish Sardines' starter was flacid, bland, served on a bed of 'salad' - actually just a few withered leaves of rocket which is something that shouldn't even be given to guinea pigs. My second course was 'Goujons de poisson avec frites etc etc', the reality in plain English was tasteless, dried up, grey fish in breadcrumbs with a packet of tartare sauce. For the same price at a Relais Routiers (ie. truckers') cafe in France one would get a hearty home-made soup followed by veal cutlets etc etc, with a basket of baquette slices on the table and a glass of house wine. If the English want to run 'Bistros' and present menus in French, then they should learn to cook like the French.

We have driven past this bistro many times so decided to call in one evening last summer. We were seated in a small gallery overlooking other diners which was good for people watching! Good food from a partially French inspired menu but very slow service. Interesting venue if you like somewhere with architectural character.

My husband and I had lunch here today. It was very welcoming and homely. The food was cooked to perfection. My husband said his steak was better than he has had in the more expensive restaurants we have visited. This bistro reminds me of the restaurants I worked in during the 1970s when attention was paid to detail and food was cooked with passion before fast-food chains. This place is certainly NOT average!

Visited Tuesday night. We arived to a very quiet restaurant wich was oak but when asked to.show us to a table a little confusion where to sit because of the quietness.we ordered 2 pints of calsburg £6.60 a bit steep i thought for a very below average larger this was after we were told there was no rose wine by the glass available........... wierd but never mind. The bar lady had to.jugle multiple hobs and seemed to struggle at times but was always friendly. We ordered steak now i fully understand that you are a french restaurant but there was nothing special steak was suggested to me to eat med rear but more like med well. I struggled with frozen fries and deep fried quartered mushrooms.you are much better than this your reviews suggest.A xheese board was to follow and although 4 cheese varietys pre packaged butter let this down and not the bes selection in mu opinion.Over all ok but a few tweeks would make you so much better for eg a bread basket befor meal. Will ve back im.sure but need improvement. Goos staff and nice place on the whole

Relaxing, friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Design of the three levels of dining was out of this world and very impressive (we didn't anticipate it being so beautiful).Price was very reasonable (we hadn't a clue what we would be paying before we arrived, booked via phone) Food was amazing and the advice about how to have our steak was very good. Over all presentation was fantastic. We will be coming back!

The actual restaurant is lovely..set on several layers and small enough to have a lovely atmosphere but large enough to accommodate quite a few tables.Lovely food that tasted as fresh as it looked...its a shame that the bar area is very basic and the day we visited the lady behind the bar was not very friendly . I got the feeling it may have been as we were not locals

We eat here four or five times a year, the last time being a mid-December lunch, excellent value at £14.95 for 3 courses, including an succulent steak-frites (no surcharge) followed by an equally good creme brulee. The staff are always friendly and the pub itself has remained a true village pub with a small bistro extension. My only suggestion would be to serve mustard in a tiny receptacle rather than offer it in packets - I squirted it all over my blouse!!

We've been here many times and never had a bad meal but yesterday's experience was very poor in terms of customer service. Things got off to a bad start when we were asked if we minded giving up the child's high chair that we'd pre-ordered 10 days ago to someone who had just walked in off the street ! We did mind and it caused an uncomfortable atmosphere when we refused to allow it to be given away to someone who hadn't even bothered to book it in advance. The service was dire - incredibly slow and very inefficient. The food order took an age to be taken, the drinks ordered at the table were even slower. My brother gave up waiting for his drink after ordering it and reminding the waitress three times when it didn't arrive and fetched it himself. No apology or offer not to charge for it either ! The food was best described as average but was acceptable and good value considering the cost. Overall we were very disappointed and our family gathering was spoiled. I'm afraid we won't be going back and can't recommend this restaurant any more.

I love this place, it makes me feel as if I am in France because the ambience is lovely. It's only small but the menu is good and the choice of food, if not completely authentic French, always has the feel that you are eating something that's a little bit different. I have never been disappointed.

Food was good and cooked fresh. The chef came out and checked on a couple of items we ordered as she felt it may not be what we expected it to be which was good. Her thinking that was actually correct so instead of waisting food she cooked what we wanted. Brilliant service. Shame they were closing for a refurb so some things had sold out. Hope when they reopen they will still be as good

Decent ish place. They can be a little slow to replace the popular and expensive buffet items. Buffet price is reasonable. The beer (the pints) are a bit dear.
