Birleys in Tower Hamlets

Found a bug in my salad. Salad leaves need to be washed!! Felt horrible, when discovered it in my food.

Just passing to find some quick late lunch. With my first impression, the counter looks clean, the staff dress code looks well and presents the brand image, but that is all... The look rather than service and food. The food is average for the price that I paid for. The service was really not what it looked... I arrived around 3:15, which I understand most busy time have past, and most stalls are ready to close. I ask if I can order, the lady have no impression and ask me to go to the till area which I was around seating side. It's ok, I went over, and ready to order; there were 3 staff only one doing order another two just wondering doing close preparation. I asked again if I can order, one of them told me to wait for her college, and another one just watch next to the one was serving. Then I ask if I can order, the lady who was waiting asked me to order from one from the first who told me to walk over to waiting. It was not customer service should be in this area .. She says to me, I thought you want to order salad, and I reply to her, you didn't ask me what I want to order. Then she took orde and the whole tone like I am bothering her to get ready to close... I just want to say, please don't work in such environments if you are not happy!!!

Another wonderful corporate order / working lunch delivered and devoured! Thank you team Birleys. Our guests throughly enjoyed their lunch. When I passed the city shop and you did not appear open this morning I worried for my order! I need not have as assume you prepared at a different site and drove over to us in the city. Huge thanks to those involved for getting the order to us. Cannot recommend you guys enough for working lunch orders. Super easy to order from their straight forward website. Or if you are lucky enough to be near one of their shops, go in and treat yourself. You will not be disappointed!

Visited two Birleys on this trip, Canon Street and Old Broad Street. Different league to any other sandwich deli in the city. Outstanding food, wonderful presentation, great team behind the counters, always smiling smartly dressed might be a few pennies more expensive. but you get what you pay for.

My first and the last meal at Birleys. I wanted a bagel for breakfast and a colleague recommended Birleys. I asked for a toasted bagel and came back to my office to find it was a BURNT. I didn’t have time or energy to go back to return so ended up eating a burnt bagel. If it was burnt by mistake they should have toasted another bagel. Why on earth would anyone in a food industry will serve this to their customer!! It wasn’t even crowded at the time!! On a positive note, I won’t be craving for a bagel anytime soon 🤣

Only been the once so far but was brilliant to say the least. I was lucky with timing and went before the lunch rush. The lady who helped prepare my food was fabulous! She helped explain the menu and how it works. The pricing for everything Inc extras. I certainly won't feel out of place ordering at a busier time as it can be daunting holding up the que at the busy part of service.

Despite the poor reviews, this place offers up a tasty sandwich and pleasant service.

Ordered a bagel toasted with butter and peanut butter. Bagel was small and dry. Cost £3! T prior to their renovation this used to cost £1.95 and was much nicer! I guess they’re clawing their money back by hiking up the prices. Shame.

Really overpriced salads and very cheap on the amount of ingredients that you get. Flavour is really good but it’s definitely a rip off

Waited in a queue for 15 minutes for lunch, only to be told that they accept cash only. The server did not apologize. Why did you let us know while I was waiting in a queue? I don’t really understand

Great sandwiches, something different from the chain restaurants. Salt beef was good, if they had different bread options it would have been perfect. Queue is quite long if you come around lunch time. Prices are reasonable, portion size is about average, little seating area in the corner. Worth giving a go.

Not a soooo bad option but not a place I come back a lot as neither I do to a pret (except for coffee) for example

I went to first time there.. Because always busy maybe good food?then try hot toasted and soup a female staff said Would you like rice etc..I said no charge? yes!and white or brown bread ? I think tell befor custermer say free other rice & bread.After pick up bag!! I said this is mine? staff said yes!! Looked inside other custermer bin bag. Oh my got !! I'm very upset then tell staff they not apologise then tell me..Would you like other meal? What's ??? I don't want if need I pay!! No smile very poor custermer service. Just shocking 🤯 this place. Never go again and too expensive.

Absolutely brilliant soups and salads.

Absolute dive. Overpriced garbage. You are better off with a tescos meal deal. Almost £10 for a soggy salad with microscopic particles of chicken floating in watered down dressing. Avoid

A decent sandwich here. (Especially the Xmas ones) always busy but each sandwich made is done so with care and not thrown together. Prices aren’t cheap but being in London it isn’t going to be.

Went back for first time in 8 years since moving abroad. Service is now appalling and the food is nowhere near as good. Shame

Actually good despite reviews! Great lunch location around Canary Wharf I’m not sure why Birleys has such bad reviews, but it’s good value (£7.95) for a big sandwich, with plenty of options (Salt beef, Pork belly, Turkey, etc) You get to choose white or brown bread, + toppings. Then make it infront of you and the portions are never disappointing.

Used to absolutely love their salads and sandwiches, and they’re still delicious. But the pricing has gone insane. I got a salad today and was told broccoli would cost extra. Figured it couldn’t be too much so said it’s fine, but when I got to the till it was £1.75 extra. For a piece of broccoli!!! It’s also unclear why broccoli would be a premium ingredient but tomatoes, eggs, cheese aren’t? I’ve also noticed that while you used to get a whole chicken breast you now get a small pre-sliced portion. I get inflation is hurting businesses, but paying ~£3 more for a salad that used to have a lot more in it is a bit ridiculous. At the very least, be more transparent about your pricing and what is premium.

The salad used to be my favorite lunch by far but they’ve recently changed it and it’s so much worse now. More expensive (of course) but in the set menu you can’t get cheese and avocado unless you pay a lot more, no preset salads. I think unfortunately will have to stop going there now, what a shame. And no more Parmesan crisps!!

Undoubtedly the best and freshest sandwich I have ever had. While the price is high it is evident that the ingredients are very fresh and the quality is outstanding.

Birleys never fails to disappoint. Great portion and great sandwiches

Shame the service isn’t as good as the food. The manager was rude and even took meat out of the bloomer sandwich. Why? She’s not eating it? And I’m not a pigeon. Won’t be going there again. Manager needs to learn some manners and etiquette. And customer service skills. If you’re having a bad day, don’t turn up for work and be miserable. And that includes your staff.

The food is okay. It's tasty, however I think it's quite overpriced for what it is. I had a salad with pasta, croutons, feta, avocado, roasted cauliflower and tomato. I felt it was underwhelming, since I couldn't taste much of the dressing either. It's not a bad place, but I feel like you could find better options for the price.

Going Down Hill - This used to be the benchmark, now the last 2 visits the breakfast stuff (sausage, bacon, egg) all overcooked, in the wrong bread and then thrown into new bread. The sandwiches are then cut in half with all the grace of Zorro on speed and thrown in a bag. It just feels "less" than before, a shame, with new competition about will try elsewhere.

Decent selection of salads but slightly confused on how to order from looking at the menus. You have to order each individual item separately and get charged per item so the cost can rack up quickly, eg 60p for some sliced carrot, 60p for cucumber etc. fresh and good tasting though

Just waited 20 minutes for a salt beef hash and egg sandwich only to be forgotten, then when it finally arrived the order was wrong! Total disorganisation and rude staff. Asked for refund 3 times and had to battle to get one, finally received and went to Carluccios. Polite staff and efficient. Go to Carluccios, not Birleys!

got a tomato, Mozzarella and palma ham sandwich I asked for it to be well done (melt the cheese)the guy assured me this was done. A waste of another £6 as it wasn't and is now in the bin. Unless the older guy manager is in food is always rushed and never what i ask for. Wont go back now as i have given the too many chances to get a basic order correct. terribly disappointing.

Love their soups but disappointed when I saw a piece of chicken coming out from a vegetarian soup. They should handle the food properly.

Have breakfast, have lunch, great sandwiches, great soup. Salt beef brisket, roast beef, turkey, pastrami, pork belly. I love their concept of sandwiches, they always deliver the same quality and taste. You can choose from multiple meat varities, type of bread(white,brown etc.)and sauce(mayo, apple, mustard..) Then you watch it being prepared and just sit and enjoy it. One thing you should keep in mind, what you can have in one store, may not be served in the other one due to limited space, capacity etc. It is a treat every time you visit.

Giving three starts due to service. Food is usually good here and prices are not bad, BUT, there is NO sense of urgency from the staff. This morning, about 5, 6 people and myself were waiting for food. I've seen my order go to be heated, then I've seen it being packed and put on the side. The guy heating up the sandwiches had pilled at least 4 orders and just keeping them on the side while starting another. At first I thought it might have not been my food, maybe someone had the same order (or one big one), but then after a 10 min wait and almost being late for work, I said to them that I'll take a my order cold if it will take any longer. He turned around and gave me exact same one that's been sat there for 10 mins (not hot anymore either). Then started giving out the rest of prepped orders to people behind me. Please create some process in there, cause you'll loose customers. No one wants to wait for 10 mins (when first in line) for a toasted cheese croissant and be late for work. Food is good though.

I buy salads at Birleys usually during the weekday at lunchtime when it is extremely busy. However, on a Saturday when no one else was at the counter, I was ignored for about 5 minutes (yes sadly I timed it to see when someone would pay attention). One girl was on her phone and the other was sweeping the floor. Eventually I asked the floor sweeper how I could be served, and she seemed to take umbrage, put her broom down, and with a bit of ‘an attitude’ took my order. The salad was great, but they generally are. I can't say the same about the service though.

Absolutely delicious sandwiches! Had "The Cuban" and it is some of the best pork I have ever had. If you like sandwiches and love meat, this is the perfect place for food! I wish they had a breadless option but I guess it would be weird if they just gave you a pile of meat (which is absolutely what I am after).

Friendly staff do a hard job well. Coffee is decent and the lady who does it remembers what you drink when you're a regular.

Don't waste your time going to Selfridges salt beef bar , this is the place , value for money & delicious

The ethos behind the Birleys success - proud of care and attention - is being lost at the Canary Wharf location as the staff not all but the keys ones are allowing standards to drop. They are not attentive, customer service is lacking, not polite, and the quality of the finish is lacking commensurate to the cost. I regularly visit due to lack of viable alternatives, but even I have now succumbed, repeatedly getting orders wrong, sandwiches not packed correctly. Come on Birleys - pull you socks up at this location!

There's something very strange and not very good about the salt beef here. It looks - and tastes - plasticky and leaves a strange after taste. Very disappointing.

Great salads, good flavor and portion size for the price

Just ordered ahead using the Ritual app on my phone, same as last week - this is amazing, they make a gorgeous bacon sandwich and read my note about taking the fat off the bacon. They serve really lovely coffee too, and they're a nice bunch - feel sorry for them though because they get extremely busy. They work hard, they're professional and polite and you can see why they're so busy; the food is lovely.

Bought a bowl of salad for lunch. After a few bites, I found a big moving bug inside my salad. Felt so awful and wanted to vomit. Went to the shop for refund and told the manager that they need to be careful when handling the salad. However, she told me it’s vegetables, so it’s impossible to get rid of bugs.... well done for birley’s on proving they use organic and unwashed vegetables with no chemicals. If it is your lucky day, you may get free protein (a big bug like mine) in your salad.

Birley's products are overall very good. Their bread is fantastic. Not cheap but this is Canary wharf.

Slightly less large chain among chains

Was doing a bit of work over the wharf and had bit of time to kill. Was there before 10am so they were still doing breakfast. Went for a Cumberland sausage baguette and a cappuccino. Was about £7 quid. Nice enough but nothing great Used to go there for lunch as they have a hot counter with freshly cut meats. Which was always nice.

When I found a live slug in my food they only offered me a one free meal. Quite disappointing

Utterly disappointed with the service. I came for a sandwich and a soup. Both the woman with red hair making the soup and the woman at the till made me regret my choice that day. I had the worst service experience because of their rudeness and their lack of professionalism, not a smile or even hello. Their attitude showed me all the arrogance that I believe stand behind the whole Birleys company.

This place has the best Salt Beef and Hash sandwich I had ever had. They also do a great range of other sandwiches but cone early. As lunchtime can be a little busy here.

Order the New York Special, you won't regret it.

Nice salad counter to make custom salads

Over priced and pretty rude staff. No wonder I never go here but out of desperation ordered marmite and toast with a coffee. Gave my toast to someone else, then redid mine and bagged it up burnt. Fiver for burnt toast and mediocre coffee!

Came right before closing, Kay and his colleague were very accomadating! Great salt beef sandwiches too. Would recommend 👍🏻

Very poor and overpriced. Mediocre baguettes, dry chicken and terrible portions (three slivers of bacon in a baguette). Massively overpriced too.

The lady serving at the food till between 7 a.m- 8 a.m on Monday 12th November 2018 was very rude and insulting to a female customer who was ahead of me in the queue. I have experienced the same problem in the past, however I felt I was just being paranoid and chose to let the matter slide. Quite frankly she should NOT be client facing as she has no customer service skills. She never smiles, is very abrupt and always seem to have a problem with what you order. Please sort this out as a matter of urgency. It is not acceptable and I will be complaining.

Love this place. Breakfast. Lunch. Coffee. All good. Been using Birleys for as long as I've been working on and off in Canary Wharf (over 15 years). Amazing breakfast butties and coffee. Fabulous salads and soups. And the Salt Beef outlet is the pick of the bunch. Highly recommended.

Oh I just love the corn soup they make. Haven’t tried other soups like tomato and lentil. But the corn soup with rice and some spice reminds me of the soup my mother makes. They close early in the evening after 5 so be there during early morning breakfast or lunch during office hours. They are also closed on weekends which is a downer.

Great breakfast sandwiches, the granary bread is lovely, can be really hectic at lunch time, great choice of sandwiches and soups, have always wanted to try the salad bar but put off by the fact that under pressure to makes a choice. Always found the service to be good, shame there is o seating.

Unpleasant, slow and pretentious

Me and my colleagues used to love this place, as they served incredible sandwiches with thin bread! Currently, they switched to sandwiches with looooots of bread that put me off. The only one I can eat is the one with ham, mozzarella and mushrooms... I miss my decisions sandwiches with tuna with thin bread....

One of the best sandwiches I've ever had, watching the guys hand prepare it in front of you as well is a nice touch, highly recommend

Consistently good sandwiches and soups

I don't think this a very inviting place, it is is just a functional place to get salad... They don't even provide free olive oil... And they are not flexible with the customer either. This a place you go because it works and the food is okay but it is not an enjoyable experience.
