Bird in Hand in Carmarthenshire

Always a pleasure visiting this lovely friendly pub, been here a few times in the week for a meal but today was the first time I visited for a carvery. The food was delicious as always, everything was nicely prepared even with visiting an hour before the carvery finishes. We were sat on the table for two in the middle of the restaurant but both myself and my friend felt very exposed & uncomfortable being in the middle, so we kindly asked if we could move to the other table for two and they kindly agreed, thank you for that. We then felt much more comfortable and enjoyed our visit.

The bird in hand has become our regular go-to place whether for a family celebration or just a passing meal after shopping. The staff are always accommodating and friendly the food is always of a high standard. Value for money, I think you would have to go a long way to beat it.

Gorgeous food. Friendly, helpful staff. Welcoming atmosphere. Great music. My family and friends have been several times- this place is a firm favourite for me. The lasagne is incredible! All home cooked.

Lovely food , speciality seems to be the lamb , lots of different lamb dishes on the menu .The lamb does nt disappoint , I opted for the shepherds pie which was very tasty and a generously sized portion.Service was very good , friendly and professional.Definately return and recommend.

I had a lovely meal with friends a couple of weeks ago. My main meal, steak and ale pie was delicious and a great sized portion and the desserts were also very good. Absolutely no complaints, would highly recommend and a very big thank you to our wonderful waitress Beth, who was very attentive.

Last night my entire family 20 + people had a fantastic time upstairs in the Bird in Hand in FFOREST Pontardulais. The food was incredible and the waitresses were incredibly attentive. OUTSTADING, highly recommend

Only recently discovered this place and just cant help going back. The food is outstanding, I've had a Sunday roast including the Lamb which is locally sourced from the pubs very own farm. Carvery is well presented and more than enough vegetables to choose from. Staff are very welcoming, polite and easy to talk to. One of the waitresses 'Brandy' is very dedicated to her job and made us smile on our last visit there. Great variety of traditional pub food to choose from all cooked to perfection 10/10.

Having been several times we have never been disappointed. From the moment you step through the door you get a warm welcome and that continues throughout our evening by the helpful knowledgeable waiting staff The food again never disappoints even with fussy eaters it is always delicious and cooked the way you ask for. It is well worth travelling the miles to visit our favourite restaurant

We phoned on Saturday, to book a table for Sunday lunch after the bird in hand was recommended to us. We were offered a table for 2pm, which we accepted. Attending on time we enquired at the bar, where staff told us to go up to the restaurant. After initially being ignored by three waiting staff, one of the waitresses told us our table was in the snug and proceeded to lead us there. In doing so, one of her colleagues started "telling her off" for telling customers to go up to the carvery when it was so busy. We were shown to a small circular table in the main entrance door way. There were 3 of us in the party, and frankly the table did not seem big enough to have taken three plates. Three menus appeared on the table, with no explanation as to how we went about ordering. The table rocked back and forth as the legs were uneven. The so called snug was exactly that. There is so little space between tables that waiting staff or customers cannot get through, bumping into both you chair and table as they try to maneuver through the establishment. The floor at the edge of the bar moves every time someone walks past, and this was a lot, exacerbating the issue of the uneven table. I can't comment on the food as we did not stay long enough to find out and after this experience, never will find out either.

A great country pub atmosphere. Parking a challenge. Beer was good. Menu provided a good variety of options. Our meals had cool chips & peas and thankfully a cool salad! Staff whilst inexperienced, were very helpful and addressed our issues. Nevertheless at £18pp for a meal & drink it was not good value and we will go elsewhere next time.

On arrival we were greeted and welcomed so warmly, initially we popped in for a drink but stayed and had a bite to eat as the atmosphere was so nice. Beautifully decorated lovely staff and a very nice meal. We will be back thank you

We visited the bird in hand for a family meal, the food was delicious and the service was very quick. There was also an ABBA tribute act on and there was a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend and can’t wait to visit again.

We booked for a large group between Christmas and the New Year. The food was superb and we did not have to wait long as we had pre-ordered our food. There was a great atmosphere as it was an ABBA tribute night. Would highly recommend as I could not fault the food or service. I will definitely be going back!

I thought I had gone to heaven! The food was amazing, you MUST have the lamb. It was fantastic value for the quality of produce. The reassurance of the local source was also incredibly welcome.

What a lovely place to eat, lovely open fire, fresh local lamb, we even had a mini bus to pick us up and drop us off. Very accommodating also as there was only supposed to have been 10 of us, ended up as 17. I asked if they could help with a fundraising evening for a young boy called Jaden, who is only 14 and has only 18 months left of his life. They contacted me today and have donated a meal voucher of £50. How generous and supportive of this cause. So much appreciated we will auction this voucher. Thank you ever so much again. Well worth a visit guys.

The welcome from staff was warming and settled us down to our table quickly. The curry was very nice and to the spiciness I like which was mild, washed down with a couple of cocktails. Joio!

Don't go here unless you want to be sitting on a table with people queuing around you. Literally stood in line for 15 mins before getting to the carvery section while others sat down trying to eat there food with us hovering over them. The manager needs to be more organised BIGTIME!

Starters were amazing, lamb koftas very pleased. I had shepherd's pie for mains, very salty, gravy was served on the side, was glutenus, couldn't pour. I did mention it to our waitress Staff were fantastic, nothing to much trouble. Lovely atmosphere.

We were a large group of friends, mostly first time diners. The seating was comfortable and, although the place was packed, it wasn't too noisy to talk. We all ordered either starters, or desserts along with a main course. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. We'd ordered our food when we booked and paid a £5 deposit each. We had a lovely evening and the food was excellent. Thank you!

The food was great, and the service was good. My main complaint is that too many tables were squashed into the available space. I understand why it was done - to maximise revenue. However it did impact on our dining experience. What was meant to be a nice/special occasion, was turned into a noisy service-station atmosphere. The table of approximately 10 behind us could not really get into their seats unless we moved. When they left and just did normal things like stand and put their coats on, they were basically at the end of our table to allow them to do this. The meal was a treat from my in-laws, so it did not feel appropriate for me to complain to the staff.

Very good pub food. Particularly the local raised featured lamb. Busy but not overcrowded when we went. A bit of a wait for food but worth it.

Lovely place, lovely food and the staff are friendly especially kaleum,he was so helpful and friendly and very polite, not keen on the manager, she's quite rude and very short with her staff not the best and ruins the atmosphere of such a lovely place but a lovely warm atmosphere with beautiful decor.

Excellent night out. Fantastic idea for free local pick up and return home travel….well done. Steak okay but not fantastic.

We came here today for Sunday carvery, very busy . Absolutely stunning 😍 we had beef, turkey & ham the meats were so tender & juicy , just fell apart . Everything was hot and so tasty . The staff were friendly & helpful especially the guy who was behind the carvery. Will definitely be back 😃

Food is good here well worth a visit, Sunday carvery is delicious. Bar service is very good no queuing at bar you order and they deliver your drinks to your table fabulous service. Friendly pub good set up restaurant set away from the bar live music occasionally. They also provide a free bus to pick you up and take you home another excellent idea to prevent drink drivers.

Lovely Sunday carvery, we all really enjoyed!

Food lovely but had to pay £4.95 extra for the lamb making it £20 for a roast dinner. No system fir the carvery. It was bedlum. Everyone was pushed passed made the experience not good for us. Won't be visiting again

Great Atmosphere, Great food and Quality beers

Pre booked in advance for food ….. still had to wait for over an hour for the mains ….. Ordered Cajun Chicken … had better in spoons …. Very dry, overcooked with no sauce or dressing ! Not impressed to be honest Hope your visit is better than mine 👍

Food was very good Service was efficient. Only quibble was delay from ordering to food arriving, which at 40 minutes, was too long, really. That aside worth visiting, for a good pub experience.

I have been wanting to try the food here for some time and came with a friend. I was pleasantly surprised by the cosy atmosphere of the bar area where we ate. I was happy to see a varying menu with vegan options which I had the vegan curry. This was delicious, although I did find a hair in my food, but this did not spoil the meal for me. The portion size was very generous and worth the money spent. I did feel the wait was a little long as it was quiet but will definitely come back to try something else on the menu and hopefully will make up for the other star ✨

Lovely atmosphere. Food was great. Plenty of it, too. Will visit again. I had the turkey festive menu, and it was superb.

Pleasant and welcoming staff very eager to accommodate and ensure the experience and dining are acceptable regularly but not too regularly. Dropped one star for service as I think that when busy they should advise of the wait time for food service. Although we were happy, comfortable and relaxed in front of the log fire the wait was spoken about amongst our table. Wasn't an unacceptable wait but was nearing it. The food is worth waiting for though as clearly farm to table well butchered meats served with perfect accompaniments to enhance both flavour and value for money. This is not a small bill restaurant but it is right price for the quality and standards given. Atmosphere late afternoon / early evening is somewhat uncomfortable with those finishing work not being aware of their surrounding diner's. Staff were quick to ask they calm down and mind language use as children were present before we had mentioned it. Our return will be a little later in the evening to avoid the after work drinkers.

Used the room upstairs for my daughter's baby shower ..lovely sized room not to big we all ordered off the menu , no mistakes with meals everything was perfect , no bar upstairs but staff came up every 10..15 minutes to check all was ok and to see if anyone needed drinks .

It's a bit disappointing! Bar staff got our order wrong, so the wrong food came to our table, which we'd been waiting nearly 40 minutes for! When our requested food arrived 10 minutes later, it was quite dry and a bit overcooked! Ordered pudding, which was nicer! However, for the potion size, we felt it to be overpriced! We sat in the bar area, but disabled facilities and the ladies' toilets were up 2 steps! As someone who has mobility issues, as well as other health issues, this was not suitable at all !! For a first impression, we were disappointed, and we won't be returning!

This was our favourite place...until yesterday. This review is based on my experience from last night. I have booked a table a month and a half ahead because I knew Christmas eve would be a busy night. Unfortunately this is the second time during a busy period (last time was Sunday carvery) when even booked in advance we had the worst table! Yesterday was ridiculously busy and despite my early booking we were squeezed behind the bar tables where mostly everyone was just drinking and was incredibly loud, about 3 people pushed by walking behind me. I was with my elderly parents and I'm 7 months pregnant. However we waited more than an hour for the food which was understandable, busy night. I had to ask for another table as we were very uncomfortable. The food was great as always, but would just recommend, it's regarding the booking, maybe when it's a busy period you could take.it into consideration when people book advanced which table you will give. I would have preferred a quieter less busy corner which we had at the end thankfully. Maybe people with last minute bookings could get tables by the bar? The food was lovely.

Food was excellent but did take well over an hour to get to our table. Staff seemed to be really short with kids. I’m presuming it was a one off because it was very busy. Over all nice place.

I thought it was very expensive for pub food My brother in law had the lamb shank which was £30.00 !!! Wow , I had the chicken it was so dry and greasy onion rings I couldn’t eat them , it felt poor for the price . it’s such a shame as the pub is so cosy and inviting

Absolutely brilliant place... Great, cosy atmosphere in the restaurant, bar area and snug, helped by the open fire for several lucky tables. The nest (loft) restaurant looks nice too although we didn't try it out. Friendly staff, good value, good selection of pumps, great food with good portions. No complaints at all - well done to all involved.

What a surprise, we ate out at a more expensive restaurant earlier in the week( disappointing) but here the choice was expansive, and the atmosphere was far nicer, and the food was really freshly cooked and wholesome. We will definitely be back maybe we will try an afternoon tea soon .We highly recommend the Bird in hand. I would recommend that you book at this time of year . We will soon. Oh by the way we did not have room for a sweet and we didn't have a starter.

Called in for a few beers and had a carvery as well. Excellent food ! Plenty of choice and very tasty. All of the staff were helpful but Beth was very pleasant all the time. She made sure all our food was ok and checked regularly that we had enough drinks. Excellent atmosphere!! Will return !!

Food was great as was the service and made us and our dog feel very welcome. We will definitely be back to try more of the dishes.

we went for my birthday meal. We had such a warm welcome from staff. Our food was beautiful but what made our night out extra special was the outstanding service we received from our waitress Freya . Nothing was to much for her, she had a smile all night in her face such kindness and caring for her customers. Compliments to the manager for having fantastic staff . we will return and hope to enjoy more nights in the restaurant making sure when we book table to be taken care by Freya. Freya thank you so much for making my birthday so special

Had a nice dinner and a fun pub quiz here. Nice setting and good parking. And dog friendly in the bar area of the pub. Staff were very helpful, especially with getting us ready to the quiz in time (thanks Beth and Lewis)
