Bird in Hand in South Oxfordshire

Watched the England v Wales rugby 6 Nations here and we were made to feel so welcome by the English locals. As for the landlord, what a true gent, couldn't do enough for us !!

Absolutely lovely pub. In Henley for the weekend and came in to watch the football on a Friday night. The owner kindly put it on the TV for us. Great service, very friendly atmosphere with the locals and a very cute dog to cuddle! Thank you.

Lived in and visited Henley for many many years and never visited this pub, and instantly regretted that.

Love this pub. The beer garden is the best I have ever been in and has birds and fish.

Great local pub! During HRR week, stopped here multiple times and enjoyed great beer and conversation with visitors and locals alike. Staff very friendly and be sure to spend some time in the garden. Peaceful and beautiful.

For a beer drinker undoubtedly the best pub in town Free house that always has Pride and Brakspear plus 2 guest ales in tip top condition Proper local with a great garden 3 TVs showing Rugby and Footy Graham and Celia the Landlords are local gems Grahem is Ex Marlow RFC but no one is perfect

Great little pub that's amazing for watching sports. Very friendly people and service with a smile. Felt so warm and welcoming. There's no kitchen here though. Drinks and ambiance are good too. Ready recommendation when in Henley. Not too far from station either.

Wish we could have stayed for longer, but the garden is a beautiful place to be in close proximity to the town, their aviary hosts birds with beautiful song, and the pond's fountain adds a babbling melody. As another review stated, the prices are very good for Henley, and the landlord is a gentleman. We will be back for certain

What an absolute jewel of a hotel. Our Second stay this month. So well located for Henley, Marlow and Windsor. The rooms were decorated to the highest standard, very stylish and all home comforts provided Great hosts, amazing food and drinks. Such great value for money. We look forward to returning very soon.

Delightful traditional English garden with hollyhocks and robins and a pretty pond and fountain. Inside it looks friendly and welcoming too. And the beer is Breakspear.

A lovely place for a drink. We found the overpriced and busy pubs along the river really off putting. Trip advisor pointed us toward the Bird in Hand and we were not disappointed. A fantastic, secluded garden, great choice of beer and friendly service. Highly recommended!

One of the best real pubs I have visited. Landlord serves the finest of ales and also Minster Munch crisps.

Not used to paying £4.20 for a pint of beer brewed just down the road. Its a freehouse apparently with 4 real ales, timmy taylor, brakespear, london pride and something else. Nice local pub feel to it tho.

This little local gem is a must go to pub for great beer and a wonderful atmosphere, plus the landlord is a true English gent and the kindest man you will come across. Fantastic selection of beers and a lovely garden i would say the best pub in Henley by a country mile.

Never been before, but was attending a friend's funeral at a church nearby. Popped in for a drink and snack. The lady behind the bar and locals were really friendly. A proper pub with a good selection of ales and drinks. Tucked away off the main street but well worth seeking it out.

Our first visit to Henley on Thames and we found this pub from the Camra beer Guide and what an excellent choice. We were made to feel welcome immediately, so much so that by the time we left we felt like locals and returned again the following day. A great atmosphere, friendly customers and landlady/landlord who have been there for over 25 years and have obviously got it right. A nice outside area at the back, good range of beers kept in good quality. If we lived in the town this would become our "local".

This was a first visit to Henley and we were encouraged to visit this pub by a family member. What a great find. The only Henley pub in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. A great choice of beers and a lively atmosphere. Definitely popular with the locals. I'd certainly be using this if I lived in the area. Food choices are limited to snacks.

Trivia night at this pub is great......after the fun and games the owner Graham comes around with sandwich’s and chips what a nice touch....it is excellent in terms of a real English publ,,food is limited like Cornish pies and also other little treats but not a full meal so do not be disappointed...but the people who go there are so friendly...well worth a visit when in Henley...get the tru English pub feeling...

Great place to watch the football on a Sunday afternoon with very well-kept ales. Landlord and locals all friendly. A traditional pub at its best. Swerve the Greene King pub on the high street for this!

The landlord greets you when you arrive and says goodbye and thank you when you leave. Bring in wonderful guest ales. Just a really nice pub.

V. friendly staff and helpful. The only Free House in Henley-on-Thames with v cheap prices. Accepts most debit/credit cards. Runs BirdStock annually which raises a lot of money for good causes.

Popped in here for a quick drink on the way home. 3 hours and several drinks later, we completed our journey! Great selection of beers, the best of hosts and overall a true traditional pub atmosphere. Will definitely be back.

Had a very nice half pint of DBOne in this pub. I came on a Sunday afternoon and the place was buzzing, despite this I didn't struggle to get served at the bar. The atmosphere here was very welcoming, despite the fact I wasn't a local. Everyone was friendly and didn't have a problem with me pitching at the end of a table. Even got some tips on a nice walking route to another local pub! There's also two big screens here showing the sport at a low volume, and the place is dog friendly. BONUS EDIT: The pork pies here are amazing.

We run (hash) ever Tuesday evening, come rain or shine, from pubs within a 10-mile radius of High Wycombe, and then all meet back at the pub we’d set off from for drinks, chips, and chat. All the pubs are independently assessed by ourselves on 4 categories (each marked out of 10 points) and then ranked throughout the year on our website (High Wycombe Hash House Harriers). Every January, we then vote for our ‘Pub of the Year’ from the top 5-ranked pubs. Summary Henley - a very upmarket town situated in champers and pinkers territory, where anything less than a £40K Beamer is looked upon (down the nose) as a 'failures motor'. So, with many hostelries charging eye-watering sums for a good slurp, it is refreshing to find an unpretentious, downright decent pub like the Bird in Hand. Beer: Although there were some boys' beers - Hooky Mild, Adnams Seafarer & Loddon Hoppit - the range (which also included Rebellion Smuggler and London Pride at more manly strengths) was great to see. The beer in this, apparently the only free house in Henley, was well-kept and sensibly priced... which is rarely the case hereabouts! Not beer: Once again the L & S, which was reasonably priced , was way cheaper than the secret lemonade drinker or cola quaffer experienced as these came in at £2.60 a throw. One of life's mysteries as the stuff all comes out of the same tube!! As the lime dispenser went pear shaped, a bit extra was dispensed by hand - a nice touch. No choccy but mulled wine available. Hashmosphere A distinct lack of seating given the seemingly sacrosanct no go dining room and the aged bar lady who tried to palm me off with Smuggler instead of Pride did not detract greatly from the traditional feel of this nice little boozer. With well kept ales yielding CAMRA awards & a friendly welcoming atmosphere a very pleasant venue.

If you only have time to visit one pub in Henley, make it this one. This is how proper pubs should be but without the ciggy smoke of yesteryear. Bakspear bitter and Hooky mild always on tap alongside 3 others that change regularly. The landlord and landlady create a friendly vibe and you can get a pie or a pastie if the beer makes you hungry. Serves other stuff like lager as well! I send visitors of my holiday let here and all nationalities love it.

Nice little pub just a little away from the Henley on Thames town centre traffic. Seemed to have a friendly atmosphere. Had a very good pint of Hooky Mild. Be aware there are 2 TVs in the main bar area.

We were recommended this place to watch the rugby, it was so popular it was a struggle to get in thru the door. Whilst there are TVs for watching sport these don't dominate the pub. It's a friendly crowd in here, dogs are welcome, and there were other beers apart from Brakespear's which made a refreshing change. England stuffed Australia too which is always a bonus. If more pubs were like this things would be better :)

Happened to go when they had a one off music night in the garden and it was wonderful, free entry and a delightful evening. A lovely traditional pub were it's all about the beer with five pumps to choose from.

I would argue that this is one of the top pubs in Henley as it has consistently served excellent beer for over 20 years. In all the years I have drunk in the pub I have never had a bad pint. The Bird also has a well kept secret - an excellent garden. Why not 5 stars? Well, I have never tried their food.
