Our recent visit (October 2021) shows this restaurant as ERBE withth the same address and if this is the case then it is an Italian style restaurant serving a range of excellent Italian cusiune and well worth a visit. Good wholesome food and friendly, efficient service.

Was good. Owners gone to live in France. New owners. New name. Dean’s Cafe. Just a very ordinary cafe now. Ok food for lunch. Mainly a coffee shop. Not correct to keep the photos up now under Beyond Design. Very misleading as few of the paintings remain and certainly the food is not the same. However staff are friendly. Just not the places it was. My photo of Dean with his dog is still up and should be removed by TripAdvisor as the owner and dog are no longer there!!

Oh Dear, John and Steven have gone to pastures anew and Beyond Design has changed hands. Gone are the lovely old tables with a lamp on every table and gone is the interesting selection of cakes and toasties. I wish them well and they will be missed. The new people will find them a hard act to follow. The menu is now standard cafe fare, it is low priced and the space is spacious but gone is the intimate quirky atmosphere and great music.

Worth a visit! Great place to meetup with friends. At the moment creative headdresses by Dean, the owner's talented brother. Owner Steve Blunkell at the helm making delicious fresh bagels et al. My favourite is a toasted BLT at £4.50. Better than at Bagelman's in Brighton. Tea and coffee served in vintage teacups. Charming ambience. Closes at 4.00 unfortunately. Unusual Greetings cards on sale. Some handmade jewellery on sale too. On the sea front in charming quaint Rottingdean. Highly recommended. Go, go, go.

This excellent café has a curious name which possibly reflects the eclectic decor. The food here is very very fresh and includes lots of salads inc vegetarian options as well as panini and the usual and some unusual cakes. I particularly recommend the crayfish sarnie and the limon tarte. Great service and wheelchair accessible - although I'm not sure whether the loo is. Some small antiques and collectables on sale. The perfect place for either traditional afternoon tea or something a bit different from the other cafés in the village. It's possible to sit outside in the summer. Very handy for the beach too, takeouts available. All the coffees, teas etc.

One of our favorite haunts. its not as quirky as it used to be as some of the kitch has been moved to make way for extra tables and a display cabinet offering tasty combinations for toasted snacks and salads. The food and cakes are reasonably priced and its a welcome, relaxed, dog friendly environment with retro music playing quietly in the background. Well worth a visit.

We visited on a busy sunny Saturday afternoon, and were lucky to get a table. We asked if we could take our dog in, and one of the gentlemen said it was fine as long as they were on a lead and did not bark, sounded fair enough to us, we were just so pleased our dog was allowed in. They were very busy, but told people up front there would be a wait for food and tables to be cleared, so you could decide if it was for you or not. Well worth the short wait, great coffee and tea + superb carrot cake, we shared a piece as it was big enough for two.If you want somewhere a little different in Rottingdean, with pleasant and welcoming hosts, this is the place!

Choose your own savoury food, cake and drink - you will be fine. They do reasonably priced and tasty snacks. I have eaten here before and the food and cakes are good. However, extremely disappointed with the overpriced and meagre offerings for afternoon tea. Lacked quality and for the price there really should have been more. At almost £18, you would expect the afternoon tea to be good. The sandwiches were okay, the scones were hard and the cream set like it had been on there for some time. You can pay less in some small central London tea shops and get better. This is unfortunate as previously had a good experience. I think that the afternoon teas are ordered in, so may be time to change supplier!

If you happen to be visiting Rottingdean, take time out to visit Beyond Design. It's an ideal place for coffee and the selection of cakes and pastries is good too. Sandwiches can be made to order. The ambience of the place is amazing - the whole café is furnished with an eclectic range of chairs and tables, sofas and benches - nothing matches but that is beauty of the place. Not to mention all the amazing curios and antiques which adorn the walls and shelves. It's rather like having a break in the middle of an episode of the Antiques Roadshow!Service is efficient and courteous. There are outside tables but the location of the café right on the traffic lights at the bottom of Rottingdean High Street means that it can be very noisy (less intrusive inside) - one of the few drawbacks.

I was taken here by a friend who's middle names are Difficult & Particular. The place has become a regular haunt as they listen, learn (his likes/dislikes) & leave you to get on with your repast. Over a couple of days we had tea, coffee, cake, jacket potatoes, savoury tarts - and they were all superb. The staff/owners are friendly without wanting to be your friend (!) and pay good attention to your requests and then meet them - hot milk, cold milk, ice cream instead of clotted cream etc. The food is presented on delightful bits and pieces of aging crockery and the decor is gothic boudoir meets religious tat resulting in a glorious relaxing shabby left bank glory hole. I loved it. I didn't have a dog with me but several customers did, all behaved beautifully with their well trained owners. Most of the decor & furniture is for sale should you happen to fall in love with a particular chair or mirror. Definitely a find.

I came here on a Wednesday afternoon, after enjoying a visit some 4 years ago. Wow, what a disappointment. The welcome we received was as friendly as a slab of concrete. No communication whatsoever other than asking what we would like up at the counter. When our order was brought to our table it was given to us in silence. Why?! So rude. We chose to visit your establishment, so at least make an effort! The cakes looked gorgeous, and I'm sure they tasted gorgeous a few days before. But the lime and coconut cake was incredibly dry and stale. Quite awful. Clearly made a few days before.Due to other tea rooms being closed on a Wednesday this was one of the few options. Such a shame and a waste of money.

Very sadly we did not feel welcomed in this cafe. Despite initiating cheerful banter, it was very clear that the member of staff was not reciprocating. The cakes, despite looking tempting were a disappointment. Very dry and quite frankly stale. We noticed other customers attempting to enter into conversation were also getting the cold shoulder treatment.Definitely would not return. Cold welcome, stale cake - why bother?

After reading the other reviews for this place I am wondering if I have the right place as I was quite disappointed by my experience. I found the staff unfriendly and almost like we were inconveniencing them by placing an order. No smiles or any kind of greeting, same when the order was placed on our table too. It's a quirky little place that I really wanted to like but the savoury pastries we ordered were horribly greasy and yet also dry in the centre. Hopefully I just experienced an 'off day' but sadly I don't think I'll give it a second chance.

Such a pity that this cafe which I frequented often when it first opened seems to have 'downsized' its welcome these days. The tables are now cramped together and certain ones are saved only for regulars so one is now cramped into feeling a bit uncomfortable. The staff no longer smile or make you feel at all special. Have they overstretched themselves? It was such a brilliant opening year when I sent all my mates along there, but now they seem - well, just a bit rude, though willing enough to take the money.

I frequent Beyond Design fairly often with a friend in the mid afternoon for a drink and a cake. This cafe is one of a kind, with its quirky decor and unusual nik naks for sale dotted around. Each table, chair, cup and saucer is mismatching, but together create a lovely feel for a unique cafe experience.Their teas and coffees are fantastic quality and taste amazing. They have an extensive range of delicious cakes available, and some of these are gluten free for the coeliacs amongst us. They also offer small savoury plates such as a vegetable tart, which came served with a fresh side salad. If I recall correctly, their prices range from £3-£4 for a slice of cake, which is probably on a par with the chain coffee shops - but you get a generous portion, and to sit in a much nicer atmosphere.Rottingdean is a village that can be easily overlooked as people drive through, but I urge people to stop, park in the Tesco (for a small fee), and cross the road to Beyond Design. You won't be disappointed.

In a village which houses 4 pubs, numerous quaint tea establishments, this quirky bristro-like cafe fits well into this sleepy this historic village. The owners love of art and design is evident and blends interestingly within the cafe with many artefacts for sale. Beverages are served in vintage crockery which adds to the flavour of this eatery. The snacks and cakes offered are sourced locally and where possible, organically and of excellent quality. There is seating available outside and the cafe is a literally a stone's throw from the beach. Why would you head here? because the owners, Steve and John, have taken this cafe into the 21st century whilst retaining charm. It is always a pleasant experience and out of the busy hub of Brighton.

Beyond design exceeded themselves yet again! Smugglers night in Rottingdean and Steve and John served up delicious food to the revellers and Steve's brother,Dean, made the fabulous ghost pirate costumes again. Well done, the best in Rottingdean again!

So glad that Beyond design opened. What a great asset to Rottingdean.Wonderful service, smiles all around. Good selection of savoury/sweet items and freshly brewed coffee. The outside seating is nice but owing to its position, there is a steady level of road noise and not much privacy. Otherwise, a wonderful place with lots of great things to browse and purchase

I regularly visit Beyond Design either by myself or with family/friends. Always feel very welcome, coffee is beautiful and the cakes (especially the meringues) are out of this world. Highly recommend 5*****

We love this quirky little cafe, it's the perfect place to go after a seafront walk. Cosy on a winters day & lovely watching the world go by in summer. The guys that run it are so welcoming & can never do enough for us, they're always great with our 2 kids, who love the hot chocolate & cakes they serve.....have to agree the cakes are delicious! Great that it's dog friendly too! The falafel & houmous is a scrummy must!

This cafe is just across from the car park and I took my father-in-law and my friend, also his carer, as we had a trip out. We all absolutely loved this quirky cafe and enjoyed gorgeous smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels and ham and salad sandwiches. Very generous fillings. My friend enjoyed three cups of tea from her pot and father-in-law and I loved our coffees, all served in beautiful china cups. Then we had cake- we were pretty full but could not resist !! Raspberry and white choc, and blueberry and lime...very delicious!Super service from the the lovely owners and a relaxed atmosphere. Can't fault it.

For months I have been passing this tea room on the bus on my way to work and every time I stop at rottingdean for a cream tea I always use one of the high street tea rooms...well never again, I am totally hooked on the cakes, the service and the lovely atmosphere of this tea room. Homemade pies, tarts, cakes, scones and delicious meringues , an absolute delight and even child friendly! Can't wait to re visit.

We discovered this little tea room whilst wandering around Rottingdean on a day out to the south coast - and we're so glad we did! We had afternoon tea, which was delicious and served on very pretty bone china. There were lots of interesting things to buy, including some witty greetings cards which were highly original. The décor was tasteful, the guys running it were delightful and we can't wait to go back and sample some more of the great cakes on offer.

This is a fantastic find. Quirky art and collectables for sale. Warm welcome and dogs are allowed, very important for so many walkers. No need to look further, this is the best café in the village! Just remember to ditch the diet for the day as the cakes are just sooooo scrummy!!!!!

We have had several lunches/afternoon teas here and every one has been exceptional ( try the rhubarb and ginger cake...it really is to die for! As is the organic tomato and basil soup) all locally sourced. On a sunny day, it's very pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by.The guys that run Beyond Design have a great eye for quirky and unusual things, most of which is for sale.Over the last bank holiday weekend, they had an event in aid of The MacMillan nurses. It was great for children and grown ups alike. Wood whittling, ice cream cone decorating and Tarot readings were just a few. The costumes were amazing, Elizabethan and pirates mingling with with the customers. Check out Smugglers night this year for more amazing costumes.Great job guys, your warm welcome and 'nothing too much trouble' attitude has rewarded you with well deserved success. Our grandson loves it!

Went here with the intention of having lunch several weeks ago with husband and 1 year old daughter. Asked the gentleman behind the till if they had highchairs, he gave me a rather disgusted look, rolled his eyes and said no. As my daughter would not be able to sit in a proper chair we left to go elsewhere. I understand some establishments are fussy about the clientele but I would rather eat in the presence of children than dogs eating off tables which is what we witnessed. Food did look lovely though and decor was good.

Amazing ambience! There are not many tea rooms where you can buy most of the furniture and decorations. The china and cutlery have are mismatched and have a great vintage feel. Absolutely delicious sandwiches, I can highly recommend the crayfish and dill and the lemon chicken. As for the cakes, amazing is an understatement!! The staff are friendly and always make you very welcome. It's a great place to visit on your own.The best place for a light lunch or tea for miles around.

Although we are local, we just tried this place for the first time recently with friends visiting, with small children. The cakes were AMAZING, we were all still talking about them a day or two later! Very cute vintage crockery (with real cake forks!) all mismatched and unique, friendly dogs (and staff!) good coffee, and sandwiches etc on offer also. Very English in its quaintness really, but for me it was all about the cakes! Well worth a visit if you're passing :)

After a bracing 45minute walk along the undercliff eastwards from Brighton Marina we needed some sustinence - tucked around the corner at the main coast road crossroads at Rottingdean we found a cracking little cafe that doubles as a glorious nick-knacks emporium. The fare is freshly made sandwiches and locally produced delicate pies backed up with good coffee and even better tea (good old English breakfast this time). The guys that run the place take orders, make sandwiches and ..... they seem to do everything. The relaxed atmosphere and the quirky decor - made up mostly of items for sale from crucifixes to Venetian masks - gives this place a definite come again feel so that's exactly what we did. Now the walk and the cafe provide an excellent half day out - easily combined with a visit to the Marina or Rottingdean's attractions we have been back several times and always receive a welcome and have never been disappointed. Try the humble but delightful Tuna crunch , home made soups and if you go in the afternoon the cakes and scones are superb. England we love you when you're liks this !

The Classic Breakfast was really good. The food was cooked fresh, hot, and very well presented. Fresh orange juice and lovely coffee & tea. The staff were very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. The rest of the menu looks very interesting with a long list of available sandwiches and baguettes. Would very much recommend this cafe and will definitely return when visiting Brighton again. Thanks very much !!
